If the police have decided to harass you because you are telling the world of their cowardice and ineptitude, they are in fact showing you why they didn't bother saving those poor people that day. Because they are in charge their lives have more value than those they morally should protect (by law they are under no duty to protect you if they are put at risk) and they will tell you what they want you to know about the great valor they showed. I understand why the families were upset over the way the video was released and I sympathize greatly. But in the interest of justice for the families I absolutely think it needed to be released. From day one the authorities have been covering up, deflecting and avoiding transparency about what occurred. And with each bit of information that manages to dribble out, the police response looks worse and worse. This video needed to come out to keep the heat on police officials for accountability and to not let this incident just get swept under the rug.

I believe they should go a step further and make the GQP, NRA and gun manufacturers have to see the crime scenes they're responsible for. They should have to face what they've done with their ridiculous attitude that guns are toys.
I'm not saying show the public, unless like Emmett Till's mother, you want to make a statement. Show what kind of horrors walk among us and the results of what doing nothing about them amounts to. Uvalde Chief Pete Arredondo is 100% to blame. This nonsense about other agencies are to blame also is a scam. Uvalde police were on site within 3 minutes. The other agencies did not show up until much later. Chief Arredondo was telling all of the officers in their earpiece to stand down. Now why did the other agencies not rush in immediately when they arrived? Because Arredondo touted to the other agencies that they have all the Intel and they have been on site from the beginning and they clearly told the other agencies to stand down because they knew better and they have all the Intel because they have been there from the beginning.

I watched the full released video for the first time yesterday ; prior I’d only seen pieces. It honestly felt like I was watching a training or a drill. Regardless of what they were told or told not to do- there was no urgency. The lackadaisical manner in which they meandered around for an hour- were they waiting on Door Dash? Even if they were told to stand back (and LISTENED, despite being able to overpower one gunman) there were parents outside that given the opportunity, would’ve charged that building single-handedly with a far more appropriate display of an understandable of the emergency these victims were in. I can understand it taking a few minutes to organize. Regroup. Get into some formation or get bearings. But an hour of milling around, walking in and out, I HATE TO SAY THIS - but it was behavior like this that made people question Sandy Hook when they analyzed the emergency response at the fire house and the inconsistency in reports. Doesn’t make it right. But people don’t expect to watch footage of a school massacre and see every official, law enforcement officer walking around like chickens with their heads cut off. That said, I understand two officers were told to stand back (one was held back, as we can see in the video) as one had a wife in a classroom and the other had a daughter. My heart goes out to them, as their behavior has been analyzed and ripped apart before their stories were known. But if a colleague of mine had a loved one in that class room and I knew we overpowered the suspect by what, 40? 50? What stopped them? I never want to hear the “good guy with a gun” theory again.
Not just because it has rarely proven true in cases like THIS, but you can give a team of good guys ARs - and if they’re scared or hesitant to confront one bad guy with that same gun, that says a lot about the power of that weapon - and why are we putting them in that position? And our kids?

Jesus, who the frick cares about him and his god-damned "trauma". Don't get me wrong. I do fully comprehend how journalists can be traumatized by their work. But he and his newspaper further traumatized already unbelievably traumatized families. They have the ability to figure out how to contact ALL the families and inform/warn them of what's about to be made public so that they are prepared to avoid unexpectedly seeing the video if that was what they needed to do for their own well being. Their a god-damned news agency! They probably have more resources than law enforcement for locating people. Another 24 hours would not have lost them the scoop or the anticipated prestigious journalism award, I'm sure. And I'm not stupid, I get the whole inform the public as information is available, etc, etc. But there are some "untouchables", some moral and ethical lines that should not be crossed, not even by journalists. Those types of things are extremely rare. So it's not as if it would seriously alter the lives of journalists or the profession of journalism. Another god-damned 24 hours would have made so little, and probably no difference in the grand scheme of things. It was a despicable and unforgivable decision. And despite your warm fuzzy journalistic bond with this pariah, it would definitely be a better decision for the sake of your eternal soul if you concentrated your sympathy and concern about the further unbearable trauma inflicted on the families of the children and teachers, where it is rightly deserved, rather than on someone who unleashed another complete hell on those poor suffering people. Jesus! I never, ever say god-damned. Absolutely never been part of my vocabulary, really. But the failure of people to recognize how unacceptable the reporter and the newspaper's decision was is that infuriating. Now I can't stop saying god-damned. Maybe because the realization that people in journalism have no red lines, and that is an alarming indication that our society really is collapsing. They could have both done right and gotten their story out. But they chose not to. God-damned disgusting, unfathomable failure to do it right, and just just do it instead.

How would you, or any of them, answer this question: "Can you imagine any circumstance whatsoever in which a population might be forced to take up arms against its civil rulers?" Because the Founders certainly could, and the 2A was written to protect the right to bear ARMS, not sporting goods.
I was a "sporting-use" gun owner from about age 16 until about I was about 26 (~ 1987). I served in the USAF (and earned the marksmanship ribbon on the M16, BTW). The one time "assault weapons" (i.e., the semi-auto-only AR15) ever came up in conversation with friends, my opinion was, "I would never own one, because you can't hunt anything with it. [I was wrong.] But I don't know that I would tell my neighbor he couldn't own one." Only after my new wife and I were burglarized one night did I start considering firearms as a tool of home defense. And when I began to study that subject, I learned that the Founders expected the citizenry to own infantry firearms, in the event they ever needed to defend themselves against tyrannical government.
"cOuLd NeVaR hAppEn HeRe" you scoff? Look up the Battle of Athens Tennessee. (Hint: It happened in 1946, not sometime during the Civil War.)

He was critical of the police action in Uvalde. He pointed out that when you draw fire from a shooter you are stopping the killing more people. He, further, pointed out that running away you are at risk of being shot in the back while allowing the shooter to shoot more innocent people. However, police academies are training cadets to not take risks and 'going home at night' is priority number one.

It makes me feel disgusted that those police were not doing their job. They should be fired for standing around in the hall. I noticed the hand sanitizer and fist bump portions. In her words “I wanted the world to see what they did to my boy.” As horrific as it is, I think the public needs to see and hear the full horror of these mass shootings. That said, the families should have been able to view the video first (just as Emmitt Till’s mother saw her son before a photo was released to the public).

OMG, really! You are so incredibly wrong! It was Marnie Tills decision and hers alone. She got to decide based on her knowledge of herself and how much she's able to endure. The Uvalde parents who, because of a reporter and news agency that has probably more resources than law enforcement to track people down yet failed to, took the right to make that decision away from the families. They all had the right, and the video should not have been released until every family was consulted. They did not even inform and warn ALL of the families so that they could at least avoid seeing the video if that is what they needed to do for their own well being. Instead they were inflicted with further trauma and a fresh hell. My God! Marnie Till did not have control brutally taken from her. She at least had the freedom to decide for herself. But not every family will choose as she did, because in their grief they know they cannot handle it. There is no comparison to be made here. It's two entirely different situations.

    • @pattiderosamusic3292
      @pattiderosamusic3292 Год назад

@@auntbutton905 I can’t speak for others here, but you misunderstood what I said. Agreed it was Marnie Till’s decision to release the photo (though in 1955 apartheid America, she quite didn’t have much of the “freedom” you refer to) and agreed that the Uvalde families should have been contacted first and collectively decided, if not whether to release the video at least about how to handle the release. But I also agree with the larger point that until the public actually sees the atrocity of this violence little will change. Historically this happened in the Civil Rights Movement and during the Vietnam War - pressure for action dramatically increased as the public saw images of the depth of the violence (yeah, I’m old enough to have witnessed it first hand), and with more recent examples of the videos of the police murders of George Floyd and Eric Garner and others. And let me add that this issue is very personal for me. I’ve lost people to gun violence and yes, I’ve seen the graphic destruction these weapons do to human bodies. Its something you can’t ever unsee…but at least for me, it fortified my commitment to activism.

Thanks Katie for emphasizing the arduous task that journalists face when deciding whether or not to release information on a story. As some of the public see it ultimately came down to the most important issues at hand. The narrative being released by authorities was not consistent with the undeniable truth the video told. And whether or not to shield the public from graphic imagery. Really? It's ok to show a veteran after they've been ravaged by war but not how it happens if there is a video of it. But these aren't veterans involved, their innocent civilians on the streets of America. And if past episodes of this nature haven't moved people to implement effective measures to stop these horrendous acts then maybe it's time to stop white washing the news and see the reality of it. Reverse engineer that thought process. If effective measures (not bandaids) had been taken we wouldn't be having this conversation more than 300x in less than a year. Reality can sometimes be a bitter pill to swallow. My dad was a journalist before he retired. He taught me the five most relevant questions a reporter should ask; who, what, where, how, and why. What I learned through osmosis was if you don't have an answer, then you never had a question. If you never had a question, then you never had a problem. And if you never had a problem, then everyone would be happy. But if everyone was happy then we would be having these conversations. (Full disclosure: I'm paraphrasing Harry Nilsson~Joy To The World.) I support both the first AND second amendments. Burning the flag🇺🇲 in protest( which I abhor) is protected by the first amendment, I can live with that. But what I find even harder to live with (literally) is why we outlaw every other military style weapon from our streets BUT assault weapons. Maybe we're taking the wrong approach. When the insurance industry was decimated with auto liabilities claims they lobbied to lower speed limits, implement seat belt laws, crack down on drunk drivers, and required vehicles be inspected for safe operation on our roads. It defies logic that it's easier to install a traffic light at an intersection than it is restrict assault weapons.

Banning a weapon was not going to rid Ramos of his mental issues, of his violent tendencies that everyone knew he had, the fact that his parents didn't raise him right, the fact that he shared a bank acct with his granny (who turned a blind eye) which he used to buy the weapon, the fact that the police didn't get him as he climbed the fence, the fact that the school door was unlocked, the fact that the class door was unlocked, that he was left alone for over an hour with unarmed kids&adults, and the fact that Leo's were told to stand down bc it was "a barricaded subject," and who chose to follow those orders which included family members of those inside those 2 classrooms.
Banning said weapon wasn't going to make Ramos turn around once he saw the gun free zone paper at the door nor is it going to make criminals follow laws like not smuggling them in from across the border. Now you're advocating for the govt to be the only one possessing them...the same one who stood down and who reports showed had contact with Ramos on social media.
Banning them is only a utopia in your mind when the real problem is elsewhere.

I feel for some parents being upset, but many questions and answers were conflicting to what some officer said. It just goes to show that all for the most part of those officers, state Troopers should be fired, they have no business being an officer at all. It takes guts and courage to really step up and kill a shooter. The sheriff , that wiped his hands with the sanitizer should be fired, I could tell his was so scared. My deepest condolences to all families that lost a child , from the bottom of my heart, we all in America feel your hurt. You all deserve the truth and this video shows all those officers actions. Now, regarding the "lack of respect towards the parents," what's the big deal about who seeing the video first? No dead bodies are shown, the screams are not singled out. We need to hear the screams especially to measure the inhumanity/callousness shown by those hiding themselves in the hallway...Releasing the video to the general public sheds light into the cover up and thus we can take action to ensure public resource is used correctly and not corruptly, and what happened will not happen again. It concerns public safety ie the "common good," and I wish the parents could have seen through their personal grief and aimed their anger more fruitfully.

I really don’t want to set off a firestorm, but it’s time to begin to move on this issue, and not with tepid legislation in Washington. Just like it costs a lot to own a car, which in most states is essential to daily life, it should cost a lot to own firearms, which are not essential to daily life but do much more damage and caused 45,222 deaths in 2020, as opposed to auto accidents, which caused 42,915 deaths in 2021. 6% more deaths than auto accidents will not be solved with thoughts and prayers.
Annual re-registration and re-licensure of each firearm with fees for each, for every weapon an individual owns. Severe financial penalties, and possibly jail time, for every illegally owned weapon. I’ve heard people suggest insurance on each firearm as well, which I agree with. If the breadwinner of your family is senselessly murdered, the family should have something to fall back on.

Every single time a new officer with higher rank walked in, they started over with discussions 🙄 None of them followed active shooter protocol. Retreated too far. Didn’t respond to subsequent gunfire. Including the ones across the street when the shooter was in the parking lot. And after, what the video doesn’t show is that they moved the injured without EMT assistance when there was no active danger. That’s also against protocol. They used more force on parents than they did on the perpetrator. Also, they aren’t supposed to wait for orders during an active shooter situation. Even if there are casualties, they would not have been reprimanded for taking down a shooter and rendering aid to victims in a timely manner.

The newly released, full Uvalde hallway-camera footage with sound indicates that the shooter fired at least 60 rounds before the police entered the school hallway (shooting most of the victims). Thus, the worst police failure was that a officer had the gunman in his sights as he walked toward the side door into the school (after shooting at officers), and did not shoot this murder. Negligent homicide !!!

Here is my other comment. I have wondered for years why so many law enforcement officers rush to the scene. Why local do police and sheriffs, state, Boarder Patrol and maybe ATF agents have to gather. I have come to believe that it is a break for the officers. Many of them do fist bump, stand around and chat and seem to do nothing related to the crime, accident or tragedy. Maybe if there were not so many of them a competent person could have taken charge.

There are several different venues that say
some loved one's were and some were not able to be contacted before the video was aired without a heads up. Although saddened, I feel that seeing the video helped to understand the casual demeanor and inconsistency of the officers and the lack of command they have. I was also saddened but expected that with our Governor and other entities that praise the
efforts and acknowledgments that they and all sectors of the enforcement teams and immediate knowledge of the full video, if he saw it. I don't know. If it they had not leaked this! The whole situation could have been covered up with a version to spin this in the police's favor temporary! Having to wait for SWAT went out the window since Columbine. None of the established protocols for dealing with an active shooter were followed correctly by this circus.
According the 2022 Dallas, TX IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police), "In active shooter situations where ongoing deadly force is reasonably likely to be employed by a suspect and delay in taking law enforcement action could result in injury or death, immediate action by officers at the scene is necessary when such actions are deemed reasonable to prevent further injuries or loss of life." There are more detailed & specific actions outlined therein. YT won't allow the direct link to be posted, but it is publicly available, downloadable, & easy to find.

There does seem to be more focus on mental health, which is helpful. Focusing on mental health issues, from social media postings, to parents, to friends, "See something, Say something", can help prevent suicides too, which are also out of control. Your stronger point, is "how" weapon is obtained.
WHY is it okay for AR's to even be an option for purchase? That is where, I believe, we can make a difference.

Most Texas schools built after Columbine, believe it or not, have no, or very narrow, interior windows. Instead, they have large-paned double doors, or large windows opening onto a hallway or a "pod". This was done so that teachers could be "observed" for evaluations, so as to make sure that they are teaching to the all important standardized tests (administrators say that it is so as to not to disturb the instruction). There are locks on these wide-windowed doors, but they are not always monitored for locking so as to let students come and go for restroom breaks. Also, it would not be difficult for the door handles/locks to be breached through broken windows. Teachers and substitutes are told to cover these with paper or poster board after a signal, warning by phone or intercom, or flashing strobe lights inside the classroom. These classrooms have virtually nowhere for students to hide--students are in plain sight, even under desks--and the outer and connecting walls are quite thin. Construction of this type is much cheaper for the districts who'd rather spend money on salaries of administrators and incompetent district police forces. This appears to have been an older school; it clearly shows children climbing out of windows at the rear of the school, possibly through classrooms that had windows. It also shows officers outside those windows.
