My method is to put 3 pieces of meat or cheese on the counter. Pill goes in last piece. Get the dog excited about the first piece and then finally give it to them. Same with the second. Get them REALLY excited about it. Then give the third piece, which has the pill. Usually by the time you get to the third piece they are so excited they chow it down.

Thank you so much for this video, my dog is going to be 16 years old this October and needs her pills but all our methods (peanut butter, food, etc.) no longer work for her haha she can clean a plate and leave the pill behind. Been manually putting it down her throat because she's a sweet girl, but none of us enjoy doing it so it has been a struggle. Same situation here. The easiest way for me has been crushing the pill, mixing with apple juice, and feeding the medicine directly into the mouth with a dropper. I don't think all crushed pills are effective. I'm suspecting crushed lasix hasn't been doing its job, but crushed pimobendan works.

However, when she no longer wanted to eat at the end of her life, I was unable to pill her with method #4 without stressing her out and me out. I'm going to work on this with my other dog and also get a pill gun. 'He already doesn't like pills in a treat or figures it out quickly if it's a bad tasting pill. Thanks for the demo.

Whatever flavoring or sweetener that the manufacturer might mix in with the pill not only makes it physically larger but is likely to make the medication degrade more quickly and shorten it's shelf life. You cannot use artificial sweeteners such as Xylitol either because that can kill a dog.

my landseer newfie ends up biting cephalaxin and then it's all over. getting a pill gun from my vet today. can't wait to try it. My old girl doesn't have a lot of time left but I sure don't want to take her just because I can't get her meds to her. She had 10+ things I have to give her daily and it's catch-22 because her eating habits make it difficult to hide in food. nad "blowing in the nose triggers swallowing", did not know this after 50+ years having dogs. Thanks for showing these great tips.

Penny is so cute! I have a question. I was just given a prefilled dose syringe for my dog with medicine. She is only supposed to receive 1 CC, and I am not sure if I am supposed to dispense directly into her mouth or if I should dispense onto a surface or into some applesauce or something. This has a measurement on the side that clicks into place. Worried it may go too far if dispensed directly.
