This is the 1.54 inch Waveshare e-Paper display - amzn.to/2HjToez (UK)
amzn.to/2Jk6Awb (US)
Once I have had some more experience with it I will show you some code.
It turns out that 'Likes' and 'Shares' actually help the channel so, if you want to, please click the thumbs up or share the video.
I don't have a Patreon or a donate thingy, I get by fine. That said, if you are mega rich and fancy donating something I would find useful then feel free to check out my Amazon wishlist (No pressure) - www.amazon.co.uk/registry/wish...
If you want to get in contact Twitter is probably the best way @mrdavidjwatts

It's the first time e-paper display modules are available at affordable prices. I think we're going to start seeing more of these. I've ordered the same model a couple of weeks ago but delivery is slow here.. haven't received mine yet.
very cool displays. Thanks for posting.
Cool little display! Need!
Cool! It is in stock again!
Fascinating stuff...
That's really cool. I don't know what I could use it for, but it's a cool little thing. It could almost go in a car, and be used as a simple GPS device, just showing your speed, distance to destination and also a simple arrow to show you the direction you need to turn. Maybe a compass as well. Very cool.
E-paper / e-ink is really cool! I'm just curious what kind of connecter you are using with the screen ( not the Dupont part).
Neat little display module.
E-paper displays are cool. Really good readability in most situations, as long as there is at least some light.
Hugatry's HackVlog Add a neon lamp and it is readable in the dark.
(Yea, you could use a LED, but it is not as fancy)
Coolest part is the image retention. Unplug them from the power and the display stays. You don't update the screen like typical screens, you don't have a framerate, since the image stays put. You selectively clear the portions of the screen that need updating, then render the new area once.
Banggood sells this display for about 9 pounds now. Thanks for the video, very informative.
Yngve Nystrand can't wait until they're dirt cheap like Chinese oleds
I really like the way that you edited the video: Mixing the commentary on the real-time and sped-up bits by keeping the real-time audio going when the video speeds up and seamlessly cutting back to the real audio when you stop speeding up the footage. The content was also interesting.
For example: Starting at 4:49 and ending at 6:40.
Thanks Zach, nice of you to say.
David Watts I just appreciate when content creators put more effort than might be required into editing. (Same goes for other areas of course.)
I've been thinking about getting one of those, but the slow update keeps putting me off. Thanks for the review. ☺
Tho I notice the datasheet does show tests at -25c, which is handy as I am looking to run them in a freezer display cabinet
I work with over 22k such displays at my job _cough retail_ , they are perfect for displaying basic information!
Although we pay a hefty premium for them, compared to the eBay listing you linked too I think we should stop bitching, ours comes with built in WiFi!!! :)
They are just awesome for DIY projects or random projects, I love that they are available to the public in a relatively cheap way.
What's the blue squishy stuff being used to temporarily hold things in place?
Thanks for sharing :-)
can you tell me if SSD1675A controller allows a partial refresh?
Is there a frontlight off the shelf solution available? Could not find any...
I haven't seen any, sounds like the market is open for an add-on board :)
Really cool looking module, thanks for the video. Have been wanting an E-ink display for a while
I don't know if it's just me but I find it a bit almost trippy when the video is sped up, but the speech is at normal speed, but the speech is narrating as if its happening in real time (e.g. "ouch that's warm" )
Where does the video speed up? That is just how I roll.
Nah, during long tedious bits I just cut out some of the audio from what might be 10 minutes and shorten it to 1 minutes, I then speed the video up to match.
Oh yeah it totally makes sense, sorry I didn't mean it as anything negative just kind of messed with my mind for a bit!
Did you have to connect it to a rasberry or anything else? Or you just connected it str8 to the £4 device?
Nice video, you got yourself a new sub :)
Cool little display! Thumbs up as always. Cheers
Nice module....shame it doesn't have spell-check...."subscirber"...? Joking aside, thanks for the review, appreciated.
thought maybe i was the only one that caught that XD
This would be a good display for a smartwatch
Hi David. Are you using the microcontroller as an Arduino compatible device?
stupossibleify yeah I am using an esp8266-12
Cool! Thanks for this video. I also have a D1 mini and the same display (but three-color). Is it possible to share the pin assignments (D1 ePaper)?
No need to answer. Just saw your "Images and Text on the Waveshare ..." video. Great RUclips channel! Thanks.
Loving that! I've been waiting for ePaper displays to come down to reasonable prices. What did the larger one cost if I may ask?
The larger one was £37.99 amzn.to/2wDrVyk you can buy the SPI 4.2 inch display cheaper though. I wanted the flexibility of the serial interface regardless of the likely slower update speed.
Aliexpress have good prices directly from Waveshare, I have two on-order: 4.2" SPI display is ~£23 UK www.aliexpress.com/item/400x300-4-2inch-E-Ink-display-module-SPI-Without-backlight-Compatible-with-variuous-board-Ultra-low/32827172081.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.hVKEbF I just received the 2.13" version, but it's slowwww, also have the 4.3£ UART version on order.
Not bad - Cheers
Very interesting David.
Does anyone know the operating temperature range of these devices? The specs listed on the suppliers at Amazon are not very forthcoming with the details.
Sure do, the datasheet says 0-50 degrees Celsius - www.waveshare.com/w/upload/7/77/1.54inch_e-Paper_Datasheet.pdf
I cannot get any text ontomine, connections? A few different places show different connections
Hi David! Have you measured the average consumption of your setup already? How far is the battery project?
The batteries lasted a little over a week. the CH340g was the culprit. Resorted to USB power.
At 1:28 min in video on right hand side there is a white colored connector where all the wires go in. Can you tell me what is it called?
I believe it is a type of JST connector.
what camera are you using to film ? amazing quality
The Panasonic G7
Can we remove reflecting surface to create transparent image for this display? I am planning to buy please let me know
Don't think so, unfortunately. Each pixel is made of a capsule full of white and black particles electrically charged and put into a viscous environment. Colours varies from white to black so transparency wouldn't be an option I guess
will i be able to use a pine64 to get basic updates on a bigger epaper display?
Sorry mate, I have never heard of the Pine64
its an iot device kinda like the raspberry. uses linux/android or remix.
Where did you get the mat? I like the color / style.
I mostly use the Ansio mats - amzn.to/2xZqS9s - I really like them and they are not too expensive for the A3 versions.
Arent you supposed to take brown sticker off LCD ? I did and nothing happend ....
How well do these displays work in direct sunlight?
I haven't tested it but if kindles are anything to go by it should be good. I will give it a test when I finish my project.
Thanks David, I just received mine from Amazon. However, am only able to run one example using the gxepd library as you recommended. Can you share working code on your blog? Cheers
You should be able to run most of the examples if you select the right 'class':
// select the display class to use, only one
//#include
//#include
//#include
//#include
#include
//#include
Select #include
I will share my code once I have completed the project in a week or so.
Thanks a million
wrong wiring :/ according to the library, wiring RST is D6 in some sketches and D2 in the rest. I confirm that D2 works fine with wemos d1 mini.
Thanks for the heads up. Just ordered a 4.3" waveshare from Amazon and looking forward to programming it to run with ESP32 and Pi3. I have an old defunct kindle somewhere and it would be nice to find a suitable driver board for the epaper display in it. Anyone have any info? thanks
Did you pick up the SPI display or the Serial one?
I got serial, didn't see SPI available from stock (can't wait)
Its delivered now and refresh is about 1 sec which is acceptable for my intended use. Can't work out how to print strings to the display but the demo code works well. Very impressed with it. Thanks again for the heads up on these displays.
e-paper is making way into arduinos good
What is the speed of this display? What FPS is it?
You could reliably get 1fps but no faster than that with a full refresh. There is a partial refresh mode where you only update part of the display but I have not tested it.
About esp8266, I've had a lot of luck with nodemcu clones from China
Thanks
My Chinese NodeMCU clones didn't I2C reliably : /
Using Wemos D1 Mini Lite now.. fingers crossed.
why was i picturing a diy Coin Wallet that links to paper wallets??...
Good vid regardless 👍
"Supporting businesses in your own country is always good" - Yeah I would only if US ebay sellers didn't overprice everything like its gold..
I only do it to the point it is affordable, I don't mind spending £2-3 more to get something in the UK.
2 - 3 £ or $ is acceptable of course, but here it can be as high as $30 or more plus shipping costs. Which is just downright highway robbery.
Like LED tape for example. I can order it locally and pay $50 plus shipping or order the same roll out of China for $10 and free shipping. Same exact roll.
Make that 13142
Whilst it isnt a module if you want a larger e-ink display you might want to have a look at spritesmods project to use the 6" e-ink display from an ebook reader (about £25 on ebay) in the same sort of way spritesmods.com/?art=einkdisplay
That was a fascinating read, in fact I just lost a couple of hours on that site. The guy is a genius
I wish someone would come out with a driver board for those displays.
Idea: Use a USB Power supply. They are cheap, powerful and small
You have yourself another subscirber 😆
haxxx0rz thanks dude
Could've just used a phone charger. They are 5v 2a
Man I would: watch -t -n1 "date '+%A%n%I:%M:%S%n%B%n%_d %j/366' | figlet -k" on that display so hard.
Your desk is a clean slate compared to mine :p
Ha ha, you don't get to see what is just out of frame
David Watts Haha I bet we 'clean' the same way, shove things off to the side :p
My desk is pretty much full of prototype prints, various modules and support material :p
I have moved onto my second desk.
Function before Fashion 😎
I wish I could be like David Watts! (WHO?!)
The kinks did way better songs :)
Who's G L O R I A? ... Subscribed... Check out the robot lawnmower project mate!
ruclips.net/video/4vV-dcwnxzM/видео.html
OOooh yeah... crusty dangerous madness! (Loving the E-Ink display BTW.. May have to get me one to play with)
That's hilarious ... it was the Jam! (Still, I win with three letters!)
It was definitely the Kinks originally but I think the Jam did better in the charts. I can't place your accent, where are you from? Razor blades on a grinding disc, that scares the crap out of me.
LOL at the typo :) 'subscirber'
Am I the only one that finds the white/black flash during update an absolute punch in the throat deal killer? Seriously.
I have to admit, it grates on me too. I am banking on there being a slim chance I will see it happen, mine will only update every 20-30 minutes.
I think you can do without the flash but you will get ghosting. You may need to modify the library for that.
9:40 My "subscirber" count isn't that high... lol
You are my uncle
You spent at least the first minute of the video talking about something which isn't even in the title. I recommend just getting to the point. No need to explain mess when we're all used to it.
Your camera is too far from the table
.
subscirber
Thanks man
