- This week on episode 13 of the back garden dirt jump building series we show you how to build in our opinion the dream trick jump take off lip, to send you up for ultimate height and airtime! We show you a few techniques and personal tips to make your own slopestyle/bmx/mtb jump!
And C A of course has snacks, and we have a science question! Does the length of a jump affect the airtime or is it only height?

thats not an equal comparison. Compare Matts backyard jumps and Sam's. Sam doesnt have a compound.
Big difference is I would actually ride Sam's small line. I don't want any part of Matt's compound!

@@meatfruit1123 think of gravity working. Like in a vacuum when you drop two objects with different masses from the same height they fall at the same rate so hit the ground at the same time. So if one has a forward trajectory of 100m but both are released at the same time the amount of time it takes to hit the floor is the same. I hope that helps.
@@meatfruit1123 it’s like dropping a ball while walking or running- they’ll take the same time to hit the ground but one will be farther down the road. I hope that makes sense:)
@@locohombre79 But it's just theoretical right? Like if you jump a spine 2 m high but its only like 10 cm long then you'll for sure have less airtime then a 10 m jump where you only go 2 m high because youre probably going slower for the spine. It's only true if you're going exactly the same speed in both scenerios or no?
Sam is right about height being the determining factor of air time. Gravity only changes your vertical velocity, not your horizontal velocity. Gravity needs to slow you down and pull you back down, so you need more upwards velocity to fight that and stay in the air longer. The horizontal velocity does not matter.

That is an amazing tip about flattening the radius at the top of the jump. No one ever talks about that but it makes so much sense.

This has been my dream sooo SICK!
That’s correct. I once heard someone say that if you fire a gun perfectly horizontally and drop a bullet from your hand at the same height and the same time, both bullets will hit the ground at the same time. This is because the only acceleration acting in the vertical axis is gravity and so the bullets will both accelerate downward at the same rate. When you ride a long and low take off your body has little acceleration in the vertical direction and so it takes less time for gravity to stop your movement upward and then return you back to earth, regardless of how fast you are moving in the horizontal direction. When you hit a vertical take off almost all of your momentum is now in the virtual direction and so it takes longer for gravity to slow your movement upwards by which time you will be at a greater height than on the long and low jump and so you then take longer to return to earth.

If you split your speed into vector components, the forward speed doesn't affect the gravitational deceleration of your vertical component. So ye, forward speed doesn't affect air time (when already in the air). Obviously more speed into a lip will kick u more so more airtime

Vertical motion remains constant regardless of horizontal so if u do 100ft jump 5ft high u will land the Same time as someone who went 2 ft horizontal but w 5 ft air

A bullet dropped from your hand and fired out a rifle will land on the ground at the same time (assuming released at the same time, the ground is level and fired perfectly horizontal). So doing a flat drop you will always hit the ground with the same airtime regardless of speed. It will always take the same amount of time from when you max out the height of your jump to your landing, regardless of speed, as long as the height in the air is the same.
But going into a jump faster means you can go higher, and if you are higher it will take you longer to land back down🤘

For that to work the speed will have to be a perfect ratio
eg: if you do a 5 foot jump and go 5 feet high, for the same amount of airtime on a 10 foot jump going 5 feet high you would have to double the speed since the distance is doubled

This is a bit of a dad comment so apologies for being a tad boring, but have you thought doing some planting? It will significantly help with water run off to help elevate where the digger got stuck. And the other plus is it will look even nicer and help the wildlife.
Definitely will be doing some planting soon! Gotta keep it looking nice and great idea about helping with the water too
