  • I try to fix some issues I have with the CNC. One being the ballscrews have a little whiplash and can create vibrations that can reflect on the cutting finish
    second change the gantry support arms to try to add a bit more rigidity
    and third fill the extrusions with playsand to add some weight to the base

    Awesome machine man! This is definitely one of the best home built CNC routers I’ve come across.

    Adding sand to your top extrusion would be good for absorbing vibrations. But at the same time it will increase substantially the work load for your Y axis motors. Also it will make your machine top heavy. Time will tell!
    Good improvements you made. They will pay off for shure. Keep us posted!

    Hi Mario, My router is only 430mm wide and I see a reasonable amount of play because of a single ballscrew on the Y axis. I believe that lengthening the supports for the gantry can also help but then you have shorter travel. 2 ballscrews would be the way to go, you would need to have 2 proximity switches through your interface board so that Mach3 (or what ever you use) can zero them to parallel the gantry to the Y axis so there is no "crabbing" that increases friction on your linear slides. That would obviously mean an new servo motor and driver, possibly an upgrade to your power supply also. awesome work! keep it up!

    You have to tell me if it improves the performance :) I am as you know building quite a similar one myself, and i have had the thoughts about filling em up.. so if it helps you, i might just do it right away :)

    I was thinking about putting concrete with rebars inside of extrusions to increase their rigidity. Do you think it can work?

    Everything look very good. Except the x-axis ballscrew is located at a little bit lower position. It may cause the assemby inclined especially when under heavy cutting force.

      raychar c The x axis is the one on the gantry, you mean the Y axis maybe?

    Nice work and great channel! I have the 2.2kw water cooled Chinese spindle on my machine. You should offer a cooling reservoir for this spindle with a built in radiator. Bet it would sell well.

      Machine 27 I use a spare swiftech h220 I had for the spindle, but that’s not a bad idea, is just finding some cheap but good radiators

    A 2# spray foam would accomplish the same vibration damping with out the added weight in the top rail.

      Spray foam may lessen the noise but not necessary the amplitude of vibration. Sand has mass and due to being many small particles, it can absorb lots of energy.

      Thepriest39 it took me maybe a hour or so to do all axis within .001 in the overall distance.
      Or at least that’s what it felt like and it could of been 3 hrs lol, times flys sometimes

    And when your machine swing to much than test it with a little bit higher or lower HF Spindle speed or a short tool that helps most time and cost nothing money only time to find best for your machine

    Second thing, do u think single ball screw in the middle is good or 2 at the sides are better for the Y ?

      DIY Tech to I wouldn’t know how to answer that 2nd question, maybe two better than one? I heard you get more torque with two but the servos I have, have plenty of toque

      Actually, adding another ballscrew is not for increasing the torque, but it is for preventing teeter-tottering that may occur when your axis is wider than 24 inches. There is a significant amount of distance between those two Y rails. You simply obtain more robust setup by doubling up the ballscrews... Great video though....

      Zee Zuu I guess it will depend on the overall size of the machine, the bigger the cnc than the stronger it should be
      I cut mine out of 1” inch thick but I guess it could be done with 3/4 or thinner if add some supports on the corners

    How much do you think it helped moving linear rail from the side to the top? Seems side would be better with less chance for debris issues.

      Muscle65car you are right. Less debris on the rails. At the same time you have to look that the spindle won’t interfere with those rails too.
      But at the end it’s kinda hard to say since I change the ballscrews, manage to a-line both rails and I can square the gantry easier. Then before with the rails on the sides

    did you build loose bearings on one side of your spindles? The expansion forces when the spindle is warm are not to be underestimated. this bends screws or even the spindles around it should always be created a way to expand. loose or slightly preloaded bearing on one side and fixed bearing on the drive side.
    I hope you can read my English while is not the best.
    When build a selfmade machine than is that find never an end while all time is some that can be better.

      @@radikult-custom I was on page 80/20, I try to find the reference number on the profile you mention, I even registered on that page, but I can't find the item, since in South America they work in millimeters. the other part, the aluminum profile that you see in your videos has a good structural thickness of story, it is 5 millimeters (in mm) outside the data that you told me about 3 "X3", I will tell you that I use a translator to speak with voice Please help me the redency of the structural thickness and link or code of the profile, I want to get a robotic arm CNC to have 3D printing and milling work for my hobby of making scale airplanes, and the profiles that I have bought are 40mmX40mmX2mm and 80mmX80mmX2.5mm as you can see is the thickness my problem since without offending here comes the import product and here the import company from China can help me, here comes all these profiles from China and the thickness where I showed your video when you fill it with sand it shows that the structural part is very thick and that data or reference page, or for 80/20 to give the bb reference and buy them since I send them the redential video they also asked me with what extructural thickness .. please or help me, thank you in advance

      Are you willing to share your files of your gantry design? I have been building my machine from RUclips and forums but really don’t know how to design anything on CAD.

      angelg796 yes I could but I use vectric software as my CaD program and almost all the time I share my files people can’t open them so the best I can do is a pdf file so you can get the overall design of the support arms but without the cutting files

      Sand can penetrate smaller gaps and can be removed easily for transportation or if he finds the weight is making things worse

      Critters good answer, I actually took the sand out of the extrusion on the gantry after I took a closer look, since it’s a movable gantry and you want to have it as stiff as you can but as light as possible even do the sand only added about 14lbs on the gantry but every little counts I think

      Joe Malovich I was a bit afraid I add cement or epoxy since I didn’t know what could of happen with “thermal expansion and contraction”. As I have read that aluminium and concrete don’t have the same range of shrinking or expanding while with sand I can take it out if something bad starts to happen

      @@radikult-custom maybe something lighter but still dampening would work like jamming it full of roxul or spray foam? There is a building caulk stuff called Green Glue which is a non-cureing elastomer, cut a piece of wood or rigid foam as a space filler and pour in green glue, both ends would need sealed tight. I realize these options besides the spray foam wouldn't add stiffness.

      Joe Malovich those options could work as maybe a dampening material and maybe without adding to much weight but then I don’t know how much that cost vs paysand $4 a 50lbs bag

    Your new gantry plates are awesome! Are you concerned about getting debris in your linear rails? If so what are you doing to fix it?

      Chazz Harbison a dust shoe keeps the dust and debris to a minimum, the plastic guards in the linear blocks holds the rest

    You after .0001 accuracy? Cause the extrusions Illustrated are good for most cnc's. Way better than an x-carve or competitors. Just pay for a better CNC.

      Will two composites be a lot better than just sand...epoxy is a much messy stuff.

      Sand will dampen harmonics, adding epoxy will prevent most of the damping. When sand vibrated the sound is turned to heat aka dampened.

    You need to loose weight...not add weight. Adding weight is a fast way to kill ball screws

    It looks nice. But you can't call this homemade. Also... you've spent so much on it...you could just buy one already made.

      He could buy one already made but that manufacturer will cut lots of corners for high % profit margins and sell u something far less rigid, robust, and accurate while charging u through the roof.
      If a person is capable of building their own machine, have the time, understands how an high quality CNC router should be built when using T-slotted extrusion, and are serious about getting their money's worth from everything they purchased they should build their own.
      Look around on the internet, how many CNC router/engraver/milling machine manufacturers that make the machines from T-slot Extrusion uses those heavy type 40 series extrusions he uses extensively throughout his build.

    I don't understand this. You spent thousands on dollars on the frame. It was obviously much more than $1000. You spent more than $1000 on the Clearpath servos. One of those is about $500 and you have 3.
    And then you buy eBay ballscrew for $120 ? You thought it was not important part of CNC ? And when you saw it was crap you repeated the mistake, and you have bought it again ? Something is fishy with your story.
    And you use 25mm rail ? Have you seen its parameters ever ? Its HUGE overkill for a weak 2.2kW 0.8Nm 24,000rpm eBay spindle motor.
    Those rails can hold and move a 2.5 tons SUV or a little truck easily. I mean one rail, with one block. 2 blocks 2 rails => the Y axis would be able to move about 10 tons. Your spindle motor can't handle more than 400N chipping force.
    100kN > 400N ??? Huge discrepancy again.
    And where do you buy those aluminum sheets ?
    You always link McMaster-Carr. Sure OK :
    1 piece of 1 1/4'' thick 12'' x 24'' 7075 alu plate is US$ 995 at McMaster-Carr ! The 6061 is about the same.
    Although the piece in you hand looks bigger than 24''. Never mind.
    And you need 2 of those for the 2 pillars. Are you talking about a $2000 upgrade on those aluminum side pillars ?
    But you have bought $120 Chinese eBay 1605 ballscrew for saving money ? Hmmmm. You seem unreal sorry to say.
    Is this a pure advertising video, that was the only goal ? Be honest please.

      telelaci2 this video is just my take on building my first homemade cnc and showing my journey and not advertising as you mentioned. I’m not forcing no one to build it the way I did and it fact everything is overkill for this aluminum frame
      I’m not expert or I have said that before when it comes to cnc’s
      Because it was my first time building a cnc I didn’t fully understand everything about its mechanics - linear rails. Ballscrews etc. But I have learn a lot in the way that if I was to build another I know somethings I didn’t know when building this one

      @@radikult-custom I can see that you are not an expert, but what I see is weird. You spent thousands of dollars on this machine.
      At least about $5000, if you bought the parts from the advertised shops indeed.
      Its very massive, very nice and precise frame. And big. And expensive. But nice job, congratulations.
      And you try to save money on the ballscrew, one of the most important part of the machine ? The rigidity of the ballscrew is crucial. A shite ballscrew ruins the whole machine. You have never heard of Chinese eBay craps ? Unusable shit all for $5 . You noob on eBay too ?
      This is weird and its an unsolvable mistery. You noob ok , but this is not a good explanation.

      telelaci2 when I first decided to build it. I try looking at forums and other videos. And a lot of first time builders used the Chinese 1605 ballscrews. So that’s I went with those.
      now after making this changes I switch them for Ground Ballscrews

      @@radikult-custom And one more advice. On this video you fill the extrusions with sand. You wanna dampen the vibrations. Excellent idea. Really. It makes much better machine, but the sand is not good enough. You have to use so called "epoxy granite", thats a usual way for dampening CNC, you can make super CNC with that almost as good as cast iron. (you know cast iron is the best for CNC frame, steel or aluminum is not so good)
      Do fill the alu extrusions with epoxy granite, not sand ! Here is a guide:

      You expect him to build a new cnc to your specs. You didn't see earlier viof his original cnc kit.
