I learned something about tempo after getting a new piano several months ago. Now when I play Terra's theme, I do play it a tad slower than I played it here, because my new piano can handle the slower tempo. This goes to show that an interpretation doesn't always lie mainly with how a musician thinks the piece should sound, but also has to do with what they're working with- what instrument they're playing on, what room they're playing in, etc.
All that being said, I made a new recording of this theme for my album on Spotify!

Reiko Nomura's version on the 1994 album 'Piano Collections: Final Fantasy VI' is what most would consider definitive. The album was co-produced by Uematsu, after all. It's slower and has a more melancholy tone which I think people really associate with the character and the overall bleak tone of the game's story. In the game itself, the main theme version is a woodwind piece and has no arpeggios. So if the piano versions can take license with the structure and complexity of the piece, surely it's acceptable to take a little license with the tempo in your rendition.

Honestly I need to just take down my defense of the tempo I took XD I've learned over these months of recording that picking a tempo is completely up to me and my interpretation. I try to do my best but the tempo I choose can never satisfy all listeners. Which is okay- it's music and music is always changing and is open to many forms of interpretation. Thank you again!!
As much as I agree in principle, it's because the overall tone IS melancholic the slow tempo a requisite of this piece.

This is the track that began my decades long love of Nobuo Uematsu's incredible music. The ultimate adventuring theme. Like so much of Final Fantasy's music, so somber, an air of hopelessness, permeated by subtle rays of light. I could listen to this forever.

I don't know why, but this song always brings tears to my eyes, no matter the arrangement.
The music in FF6 is so haunting. Makes you feel the pain and happiness the characters go through.
FF6 has definitely the most touching characters in all of Final Fantasy.
I dunno about that subjective opinion seeing as most characters stories were about 15 mins long.

The Terra's Theme is the song of all Final Fantasy (because I've played almost all) and it belongs to version number VI, which is one of the best in history (although many love the VII because it is the first played by the youngest). On your piano you added several arrangements that make it a unique piece. Hugely grateful for giving us this experience; as well as for performing the Chrono Cross theme "Shore of Dreams" which is also wonderful.

Exactly. Ff6 is the best one, it's the master of puppets for ff7's black album. I love this version.
Nicely channeled. This is an ancient song from another universe. That Final Fantasy game, and others, as it turns out are real and from the multiverse. Leaked into our reality through subconscious channeling. Many find themselves going to those universes, even after our deaths on this world, especially the Japanese.

There are trillion of universes, but the idea there is a universe for everything is known as Arcturian humor. Let's say a universe exists where ketchup tastes good on waffles. How these elements occur is a media property is unconsciously or consciously channeled, often by Japanese, because most older Japanese people are channels, mediums, telepaths. It's that simple. But yes, getting there is not possible unless it's through manifestation into a different reality, basically. Joining with such a power structure. Or available after one's death on this world.

I love how it opens with the ruined world’s theme as Terra’s underlays it.
It’s almost as if despite how desolate the world is after Kefka’s victory, Terra still carries on and tries to help the world wherever she can - cause that’s what the story of FF6 is really about: Trying to bring magic - adventure, a sense of fantasy to a cruel and hate-filled world that would prefer to forget it.

Final Fantasy 6 is my favorite from all final fantasy series --- characters, music, storyline --- just too good.

After I played FFVI in 2013, I got into this theme. The melody tells the character of Terra's fate, if you read that story a little , you'll felt deeper under the theme.
Thank you! I know I do lack a personal connection to the characters, but I think Uematsu's compositions are incredible all in themselves, and can evoke emotion even without the character background! But I do wish I had had that experience too :)

I found this refreshing, we are as performers allowed to express our selves through our realization of the score. my current professor also frequently remarks about the need to consider melodic grouping and pacing and breathing ...spot on.
you are not setting out to copy what most people have done before, in fact , that's our challenge, how do,we make the familiar interesting?...
besides if you have critics, it just means you are doing something right..,either in challenging your audience, gaining enough exposure. or both. and those that think it's too fast can go learn and record and post their zzz....of a performance to their own channel.
besides are Arnie (as in Arnold ) Schoenberg said, and I paraphrase , true artistry doesn't seek to be pleasing to everyone, but rather if it pleases all, then it isn't true art. ooooh snap :-)
Hahaa you're so eloquent when you write XD Thank you for this. I do realize that some interpretations are not as excepted, neither should they be. For instance, I probably would never play a Bach Fugue with full pedal, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's forbidden. Chances are though, it won't be accepted very well because it's very far from stylistically correct. But I agree with you 100%!!
This rendition of this song is the whole reason I learned to play piano. I still have yet to get through the whole song without messing up. Still glad I learned to play and I still really enjoy playing it.

i mean lets be real here, the distant worlds arrangement is garbage. your overall tempo is fine, I would do a few things differently (I would say your rhythm is too static for my taste, should be variable and deliberate) but the people saying it is too fast are just stupid so don't listen to them.

This melody is one of Uematsu's best arrangements yet and in my opinion, one of the purest and most beautiful emotive saddening melodies ever to exist! And you made it justice with your art Kara! It's simply breathtaking..! I feel transported back into the game from my childhood, with this! Revives all the sentiment lived throughout all the story I played through!

Throughout the game there are varying arrangements of Terras theme, the main one being the world map theme with the loud flute and bass guitar. This best matches that tempo and I love it! Please do more of 6, mystic forest next!

Haha you made me want to pull up iTunes on my computer so I can check the OST (which I own an official physical Japanese copy of since it's amazing) to see where it is. It's from the Opening Theme, Awakening, Terra (or Tina, the world map theme like you said), and you can hear the motif in the Ending Theme.
This brings back childhood.
My favorite part of this theme is "Snow Field", I get emotional listening to this.
How does this has 7 dislikes? This is proof that it doesn’t matter how good you are or how good you perform, there’s always gonna be someone judging you.
People are used to hearing it a certain way. That's how it is with all music actually. And someone is bound to be thrown for a loop when they hear something played just a little different than they normally hear. You're right, it's impossible to please everyone no matter what!

Final Fantasy III was just gold and it deserves a remake. I can't think of one song in it that wasn't memorable, especially Celes's theme.

most people react to video games or cartoon songs by sheer nostalgia, so if a musician gives a song a twist they go gun's blazing all over the musician because the song wasn't played "correctly"

Personally, when I hear the song, I imagine it being very tame, calm and relaxing, hearing all the individual notes giving you time to absorb it all and appreciate every note, especially around about the 0:55 mark when being played at 0.75 speed, on normal speed it feels very energetic, which in my personal opinion doesn't seem fitting. Don't get me wrong, you did absolutely fabulous with this song and nailed it, I just feel slowing it down just a tiny tad would've been perfect :)

When you started, it reminded me quite a bit of the piano part of the Young and the Restless theme.
I love that piano; it sounds awesome. I expected to find info on the piano in the description, but I did not. I'd like to know; name, model, year, and so on.
As far as the tempo is concerned, the original piece does NOT have a stable tempo, it's dynamic, ranging from 60 to 88 BPM, so really, your rendition here is fine, and absolutely enjoyable. Also, I've never thought of Terra's theme as sad or melancholic, but adventurous and exciting.

This is probably the most importan song in my life. It got me into music, the game got me into art and fantasy in general and even thought me english growing up (my mom used to translate it to me while playing from english to french). And this is also the best version I herd somone play ever.

The base melody for this song is absolutely haunting. Hearing it for the first time on the SNES's synthesized wind instrument really made you feel like you were about to embark on an incredible journey. Well done Kara!

Here is what you brought to this theme: It begins in the darkness. A girl is lost, her mind dominated by the crown. She truly awakens in an unknown place surrounded by the biting cold of a mining town. She is told to run, to leap into a shadowed, frigid place knowing little of herself. She meets many along the way, each granting a glimpse of her own identity. She sees a faint glimmer, amidst the spacious dark, that calls to her. As the music picks up, you can see that she has an idea of who she is, but she struggles with her own identity throughout the entire game. I think FFVI, and this theme, shows the beauty of finding yourself in a world where answers can be hard to find. The tempo is perfect in my opinion because it emphasizes just how swept up each and every one of us can be by our own mystery while preserving the nibbling melancholy of being so lost in it all.

I started learning this after watching your video as my first mid-long term project as a beginner. A few months in and I can play about half of it, such an amazing exercise for the left hand also. Not as fast as you though haha. Love your videos, you're really talented.
