    I don't know about the 12 mm fisheye, but the 8 mm Samyang can easily be modified to focus a lot closer. Stock it has two screws to stop you with focus at infinity and at the closest setting; you can remove the second screw so you can turn all the way until the first screw locks you almost a full turn from infinity! I don't remember all the details as a few years passed since I modded mine, but I remember it was quite easy to do.

      @@shamiksanyaldop Unfortunately it's an APSC lens, and I moved to full frame a long time ago, so I don't have a lot of pictures taken with it, especially in close focus. I remember that really close it wasn't amazingly sharp, and probably suffered of field curvature. But it could focus really close, if I'm not wrong even inside the lens. Cool but not really usable as it still maintained a roughly 180° field of view, so not yet a good magnification and lighting became challenging. I remember having fun taking pictures of mushrooms from below showing the fins (at around 5-10 cm distance), having the bokeh of the foliage of the trees in the background, but that's it unfortunately.

    With it not covering a full frame this feels like it would be amazing on a micro four thirds body (Olympus, Panasonic, black magic and so on) then there would be less cropping and a higher resolution over all.

    You should consider putting a 1.4x teleconverter behind this. Normally a teleconverter would be counterproductive to the whole “wide angle” look you’re going for but in this case it would just stretch the image to cover the full frame.

  • @serhiirudenko6183
    @serhiirudenko6183 2 года назад +5

    Those small wide angle lenses are also used for FPV drone cameras. So you can get one in such FPV store. Also older action cams use very similar lenses (SJ4000, Xiaomi Yi etc)

    A few years ago I made a fixed focus macro lens from an old pair of binoculars. It was really hard to use since I had to move back and forth to find the focus, so I made a laser trigger from a cheap laser pointer, a phototransistor, an optocoupler and a cheap camera remote. I affixed it to my lens so that the laser beam would be right in the middle of the depth of field and when my subject was in perfect focus, it interrupted the laser and triggered the camera. I can't remember the exact circuit, but I'm sure you can find something similar on the web, since I'm pretty sure I found it on a blog...

    You could try increasing the depth of field, as diaphragming to the maximum, as tilting the lens with a tilt adapter. I don't know if with a small coverage circle like that of the microscope objective how effective this solution can be, however it is better to work with a 2X objective.

    14:13 - 14:19 Yeah and oddly enough, using higher (the correct) ISO for your lighting conditions gives you a much better final result with a lot less noise than if you were to just use a much lower ISO and have to crank up the exposure/shadows in post while editing the pic to get it from being black or dark to where you want to. That's why I'm not afraid to use say ISO 500 to get some shots that I otherwise would never have been able to get and have still gotten insane results. Don't be afraid to crank up the ISO for those darker shots people! (within reason, of course! You're not gonna do macro photography with 2k ISO unless you use one of those fancy new AI denoising programs, and even then it'd be better to just get a good starting image that doesn't need much correction to begin with.) Some of my favorite photos have actually been shot on 500 ISO because the lighting conditions just weren't there and I was just starting out so I didn't even own a flash yet.

    • @onegreenev
      @onegreenev 2 года назад

      A way around getting some good background light is to use two flash units. One on the camera to get the light to the subject and the other off camera to light the background. A little more gear but in the end I think it would be worth the effort. My tripod is light weight and quick to setup and connect the camera. So I prefer using the tripod for better focusing. I still like using 100iso and 200 shutter with flash. Light the background with this wide angle and tripod the sucker and I bet you get better imaging from a lower quality setup. It won't fix the short working distance but it will work.

    Hi Micael! Do you think a stereoscopic version of this piece, with two tubes next to each other, could be designed and printed? I?m thinking of a macro version of the Canon Dual Fisheye objective, to capture macro videos to be viewed in VR like the Micro Monsters from David Attenborough. Attenborough uses a complicated setup involving two DSLRS and a beamsplitter, but I'm looking for a mix between your setup and the Canon Dual Fisheye. I thought maybe as the distance between objectives would be way shorter than on a regular VR setup, the pieces could be designed so that each sends an image in a straight line to its half of the sensor, without the need to use prisms or mirrors. Do you see some optical problem with my idea? I'm thinking maybe the tubes overlapping, but I don't know a lot about optics. Thanks for the video!

    Thank you for the idea, and the design! I have just print the models, and tested them. I have used the lens from a false Gopro, but, in 'shot' combo, i'd need a longer cctv adaptor. I dont have lens specs, but i asume that almost all the gopro imitations are quite similar. Any experience with this stuff? I think i'll try to elongate 1cm the cctv adaptor. I'll try too other lens, from webcams, etc. Interesint and entertaining! ^^

    Hi Micael! Great video as always!!
    I'd like to ask you something: I own a Laowa 100 macro and I'm looking for a flash ideal for macro photography, lightweight would be great. Is the Meike flash you use in this video ideal for that lens? I remember in the past you used another flash while trying the 100mm, probably the Meike was too short. Maybe with that hotshoe adaptor even the Meike would be more efficient but I can't find it anywhere. I was considering also other flashes like the neewer 630 or the equivalent from Godox but I fear that the weight with one of them, plus the 100mm, plus the camera would be too much. Any advice?

But physically combining them is difficult and a 3D printer would solve this

      As long as the diffuser makes the light source at least 10cm in diameter and is placed close to the subject, preferable less than 10cm away from it, it will give great results. I would recommend a diffuser made specifically for macro photography, such as the DÖRR, the Pope Shield or the AK diffuser. I have videos on all of them. Check my playlist about macro photography diffusers.

    Why don't you sell this? The both of you, I would buy it if you manage to make a cheap probe lens for canon ef, add some leds on the front like the laowa 24mm probe lens and it would be awesome for the ones who can't afford the laowa yet

      One has to prioritize in life. I have decided to focus on youtube, because I find it enjoyable, and I don't have time or the interest to run a lens business.

      @@MicaelWidell many youtubers seek and alternative way of income based on the channel itself, you tube is the platform but the way to make money of it can be several, that's why mech is a very important tool for the growth of an influencer. Just a thought.

    I have a Sony A6000 with a Nikon 55mm f2.8 macro lens on it.
    Would love to try this Fisheye Macro lens, but I know nothing about 3D printing.
    Would someone be kind enough to print an extra one and sell it to me please?
    Or is there a used one available please?

    hi, i've been looking for an idea like this, but not for insects, but miniature or scale photography, for architectural models, and hotwheels photograhy, with the intention of giving the feeling that the photo comes from an scaled angle, as if the photo was taken for one of the human scales in the model.
    Have you tried this lens for some miniatures?
    Congrats!!!

    DP reviews claim that the Techart LM-EA9 conversion kit, allows Sony E Mount to achieve auto focus on manual lenses - Getting on well with the Laowa 65mm Manual lens now, but just thought it would ask. Does it work? Is it new to you too?

      The techart adapters have existed for a long time. Yeah I guess they work, but likely not nearly as good as a native autofocus lens. And for macro photography I think you are much better off using manual focus.

    Good academic excercise. Even if you were able to capture an insect with the background, are they images of anything useful? Maybe I've been doing this too long but for those reading this, what would the end goal be...? As a photographer, there should be an end goal as in life. My comment isn't directed to Micael but to photographers.

    • @MicaelWidell

      The end goal for me is to have fun playing with new lenses and trying to make unique looking and aesthetically pleasing photographs. But might be different for every photographer.
