Such is progress. And now we have the spectre of interrupted gas supplies and the possibility of power cuts this winter. Only Drax and Ratcliffe left now, the former burning mostly woodchips, so still needing its chimney and cooling towers, whilst Ratcliffe is the last coal-fired station (though West Burton is held on stand-by). We may need it!

Worked at this wonderful Power Station as a 17-18 year old apprentice electrician 1977-1979. Sub-contract. On the very very high gantry cranes. Shuffling out on the I-Beams to connect the 'Crab' motors. No harness (no fuck all). Just adrenalin. Got made redundant from that job when I was 21 after becoming a full payed (exams passed) Electrician. Dont Trust Anyone !. But, Coal could still be King, If they stopped blowing these wonderful places up.

Coal can't be king because we are trashing the planet with carbon emissions and greenhouse gases by burning fossil fuels.

Power station design life was 25 years but stations built in the 1960s anf 70s worked for over 40 years. Drax built in the early 1970s is still working. The CEGB built stations were well built and had long life.

To think I worked on the Eggborough site in the 1960s when it was built. Over fifty years back.

Thank you very much for the upload only drax left round here. now that coal is being phased out there I wonder how long the towers and chimney there will last.

Some units of DRAX have been converted to burn wood pellets. Still going strong. Two of the coal units have now been extemded for two years because of the present situation regards oil gas supplies.

Decommissioning if coal has gone too far and too fast. We are now paying the price for that folly.
