Jared, thanks! Great job! Would you please also consider modeling hi speed travelator. It's a moving walkway in which each segment has two parts that can expand. I'm not sure about escalators in US, but here in Europe, the handrail moves slightly faster than the stairs. This is intentional, because it keeps you aware of your surroundings and thus keeps you awake. If you fell asleep on the escalators, you might end up in hospital after a rather curious accident.
Can't imagine a Hong Kong without the Central-Mid-Levels escalator. Reminds me of when Mr Bean was shopping and riding the escalator but he didn't realize he was at the top of the escalator
Actually most escalators (that I used anyway) will have the handrail moving a bit faster than the steps. I looked it up and one reason I found has to do with wear, over time reducing the handrail speed. So this way, they get a better service life out of it. Another reason I found is safety. It would actually go faster on escalators going up, and slower on ones going down (which I think is also what I’ve seen). If someone who counts on the handrail for balance falls, they’d fall on the escalator upwards. I think my father (who was a maintenance technician in a large department store) actually mentioned the safety reason to me.

Спасибо тебе за твой труд по популяризации работы инженера. И, конечно, нельзя не оценить твою способность объяснять сложные механизмы простыми словами с великолепной анимацией
There were two really long escalators on the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier when I was stationed on board. They went from the deck under the hangar bay all the way up to the deck under the flight deck (through four decks) and were designed back in the late 50s to carry pilots directly from their ready-rooms up to the flight deck. They were never activated while I was there, but everyone used them as a shortcut and under a heavy enough load, they could begin to slowly descend causing everyone to walk against them.
I worked at a Bon Ton some years ago, and the in-store escalator broke and had to have its steps removed for repair. It was fascinating seeing the interior. This video helped me see how the parts worked.
"have you seen this view? or this view?" I have actually there's a small shopping mall in Kyiv, Ukraine that has escalators with transparent sides so it's really fun to watch them
0:06 Yes. I have. In Japan, they have these glass escalators in malls where you can see through them. It was the first time seeing them for me. I’ve seen the insides of this thing already. Looks so cool by the way!
I was once in Katowice, Poland, and they have an escalator in the shopping center near the station, which is not covered, but is glazed from below and glazed from the sides, and the whole mechanism is beautifully visible.
TJ TheMemeMan The only time I saw that was in Heathrow airport, London. In the USA we don’t have that in our airports, but at universal studios as some have pointed out. Also our golf carts are silent. The ones in the London airport sound like ducks quacking.
It's helpful for those who are not quite as mobile such as elderly people. Mainly i think its most helpful to the people making all the money from rent in shopping centres though. I mean who would want to walk up four stories of stairs to visit a shop on that floor. If it was just stairs you can bet your arse nobody wants to lease a shop on the top floor.

There's an Uncle Grandpa episode about that
Saw while my siblings are watching
The real question is “why escalator don’t work most of the time?”
Real answer is" Union mechanics on 8hour coffee break"
cause you live in washington DC
There were two really long escalators on the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier when I was stationed on board. They went from the deck under the hangar bay all the way up to the deck under the flight deck (through four decks) and were designed back in the late 50s to carry pilots directly from their ready-rooms up to the flight deck. They were never activated while I was there, but everyone used them as a shortcut and under a heavy enough load, they could begin to slowly descend causing everyone to walk against them.
That's cool, thanks for sharing
Please continue making these excellent visual explanations of how things work

Escalator lore:
I worked at a Bon Ton some years ago, and the in-store escalator broke and had to have its steps removed for repair. It was fascinating seeing the interior. This video helped me see how the parts worked.
"have you seen this view? or this view?"
I have actually
there's a small shopping mall in Kyiv, Ukraine that has escalators with transparent sides so it's really fun to watch them
Gulliver, I suppose? There are really pretty cool escalators.

0:26 I actually feel like life wouldn’t be too hard without escalator.
people would sure get alot more exercise
Did you ever see the photo on the web of escalators going up one short level to a Fitness USA gym?
Metro stations kinda need them. It's not normal to walk that many steps at that steepness.
0:06 Yes. I have. In Japan, they have these glass escalators in malls where you can see through them. It was the first time seeing them for me. I’ve seen the insides of this thing already. Looks so cool by the way!
Can you do a 'Inside air force one?' also statue of unity
Well yes but actually no

I was once in Katowice, Poland, and they have an escalator in the shopping center near the station, which is not covered, but is glazed from below and glazed from the sides, and the whole mechanism is beautifully visible.
I just been there 2 days ago!
Escalator lore.
Love learning about escalator lore

y’all ever been to an airport and hear:
“please watch your step as you exit the moving walk.” over and over again?
TJ TheMemeMan not at an airport but have u ever been 2 universal bro
Kyle Criscuolo yes sir
universal studios
TJ TheMemeMan
The only time I saw that was in Heathrow airport, London. In the USA we don’t have that in our airports, but at universal studios as some have pointed out. Also our golf carts are silent. The ones in the London airport sound like ducks quacking.
YOU have...moron.
Bruh when I was 6 years old, I thought escalators were just stairs that produced more stairs to go up of that made any sense.
Did you guys ever touch the underside of the railing?
If you did, you know what’s underneath
You are what's underneath, well at least parts of you...
Christopher Xie I don’t hold onto the handrails. You never know what everyone who went on the escalator before you may have been touching.
I got electrocuted @Chistopher Xie
Some kind of black powder.
! Very Good !
"its hard to imagine the modern world without escalators"
did you forget about stairs? 😂
My gf: what are the you watching?
Me: how escalators work
Her: why?
Me: good question
I don’t need any thots in my life either
me: it's an uplifting topic and I don't want to be down!
because w h y n o t 🙂
