  • In 1991, Australian Beatles tribute group The Beatnix performed Get Back live on the roof of the Sydney Channel 9 studios in Willoughby (the band was joined on piano remotely from downstairs in the studio by the Midday Show Band keyboard player, which explains where the keyboard solo was coming from).
Channel 9 had their helicopter on hand to catch some aerial shots of the group, along with a film crew on the roof of the building itself.
The musicians performing as The Beatnix on this track were Bruce Coble (as "John"), Steven Shipley (as "Paul"), David Wood (as "George") & John Taylor (as "Ringo"). They were the best known lineup of the group in the early 1990's, having had cult success with a bizarre version of Led Zeppelin's "A Stairway To Heaven", before they all left to form a different Beatles tribute group called The Beatels in 1996, which continues to this day.

Hey Bruce. Thank you for uploading. What an amazing piece of history. Just wondering was this stored on video tape ? There has been no loss to visual or sound after almost 30 years !
Please keep posting more Beatnix/Beatels. Also, I recall an MTV episode hosted by Richard Wilkins where they kept crossing to you (as John. L.) co-hosting in the streets and talking all things Beatles. 🎸

It was on VHS, but I did run it through a digital video camera to capture it using a firewire cable. I also ran the audio through an EQ in Premiere Pro, as the sound was a bit flat straight off tape. Amazed someone remembers that MTV bit...I don't have that on tape sadly...but I do remember asking some shady dudes on the street in Kings Cross if they could remember where they were when they heard that John Lennon had been shot, & the first guy I asked replied "in Long Bay Jail"...awkward...

Thank you for taking the time to reply with such detail. Watching your last couple of uploads has made me very nostalgic. I was in high school, mid 80’s, when I saw the Beatnix featured on a segment of Simon Townsend’s Wonder World. I think the interviewer was Edith Bliss. This was the first time I had seen the concept of a “Tribute” band. Since then, of course, Beatle Tribute bands have formed in many many countries.
Anyway, early 90’s, I saw an ad in the Trading Post for a Vox Bass Amp and Speaker. I purchased it, and the bloke was a former left handed “Paul” who played in the Beatnix. I can’t remember his name. I still have the amp today.

@@f.a.toledo8102 Might have been Andrew Hill...he had been a lefty Paul in Beatnix before I joined them in 1990...he plays over in the US these days...

It's impossible, but the Beatnix sound more like the Beatles than the Beatles do. This cover is 99% flawless. The vocals by Paul are outstanding. The percussion keeps the exact beat as the original.

Hi Ariel. Thanks for dropping a note. To answer your question, Beatnix are still operating as a group I believe, though this whole lineup of musos left in 1996 to form our own group called The Beatels. We've been going for 25 years now though obviously have had to cancel shows recently due to covid. We have had some personnel changes in that time, and very sadly, Steven Shipley, who was singing this track, passed away in 2014. You can find out about The Beatels at beatels.com...and this is something we did a few weeks ago: ruclips.net/video/FmHHNrfp2QE/видео.html 👍

What if the Beatles had performed twice on the rooftop, going to a barber in between? And selling their cut-off hair for charity...
