  • Jerry Braza plants the seeds of mindfulness one conversation at a time.
Interpretation for TEDxSalem 2017 was provided by student interns through a collaboration between Western Oregon University, TEDxSalem, and the Deaf and interpreting communities of Oregon. The volunteer student interpreters were supported by volunteer, certified interpreters in order to minimize potential errors. Your support of these pre-professional interpreters’ growing skills is appreciated.
Jerry is an ordained dharma teacher in the lineage of Buddhist Master Thich Nhat Hanh, spreading mindfulness at retreats, seminars, workshops and classes. But mindfulness didn’t always come naturally to the retired Western Oregon University professor. He started to take classes on meditation and mindfulness. He traveled to India, China, Vietnam and Thailand to study. Then he mixed in his Catholic roots of contemplation and developed a secular mindfulness practice that he now shares.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Hi Amoris, Hope you are well and thanks for your kind note. I smile thinking about our connection at WOU and how you have grown since then. We haven't forgotten the "forgotten people." 🙏🙏

The manifestation of mindfulness on a person varies , this is not to compare ourselves to others

It is not to the speaker but to add to his speach

Mindfulness... Are you attempting to change our language? Where I'm from the concept is called consideration, and being considerate. Doing so leads to having manners. There are many elderly people who are masters of this that we are ignoring completely. Trying to change the concept to "Mindful" is not being mindful of them.

Mindfulness (sati) first explained to the world by the Buddha. Read the four foundations of mindfulness sutta.
