  • Stress and its impact is the number one health issue confronting modern civilization. The release of adrenalin-like hormones to prepare the body for fight, flight, or freeze is linked as a comorbid factor with virtually all body systems and illnesses including cardiovascular, pulmonary, digestive, endocrine, immune, and nervous diseases. Recent scientific evidence reveals Mindfulness based practices builds resiliency and capacity to meet the challenges of change and stress and enhance one’s personal perspective, equilibrium, and equanimity.
Dr. Dave Johnson is a Professor of Nursing at the University of Saint Francis, EAP Specialist with Parkview Health, and co-owner of Integrate Mindfulness in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He has worked with many organizations with consultations, presentations, and publications. With licenses in clinical social work, marriage and family therapy, and nursing, he promotes health and vitality in individuals, families, organizations, and communities. Topics focus on stress, leadership, teambuilding, change, and mindfulness. He weaves stories that reveal the nature of stress in juggling work and family and strategies for maintaining one’s sense of humor and perspective.

Wonderful video - such important information for everyone to hear! "Are you here?" - if only we could have someone ask us this several times per day - it would bring us into the NOW and the PRESENT MOMENT. Practical information that has the ability to change someone's life - also focusing on the breath (our life force)...

Cant believe the sissies in the comments, this Talk was incredible, it was very passionate and emotional but if you paid attention he said some incredible and profound things. He had amazing analogies and personal anecdotes, and even had a few jokes in there . And then he wrapped it up with his point and conclusion.
This is definitely one I'm saving onto my Playlist of best TedTalks!

How Mindfulness is like a magic trick
Perhaps the best way to understand mindfulness and how it is presented is to understand magic. Acts of magic involve the magician’s connection of simple actions (pulling a rabbit out of hat) to unknown or ‘magical’ mechanisms by hiding or obscuring alternative independent measures or procedures that imply less arcane or ‘miraculous’ causes. This occurs when the mechanism of action (trap door under table) is obscured by the magician through a sleight of hand that focuses the attention of the audience on the odd behavior (wave of a wand) that merely correlates with the appearance of the bunny from the hat. The essence of the magician’s trade is deflecting or obscuring explanation by diverting the audience’s attention to absurd and fanciful procedures that have no causal link to any discernable process, but with a wink to telling the audience that a simple explanation really is available, at least when the trick is revealed. To pull a rabbit out of a hat, once explained, is old hat, thus the magician wants to keep up the mystery, and surrounds the real and simple explanation with a lot of gesticulating with magic words, hand gestures, and the waving of a magic wand. In a similar way, unexplained yet effective practices such as mindfulness have an aspect of magic. It helps that mindfulness has diverse meanings, so it can mean veritably anything. So, if you are taking a time out from distraction and just being in the moment, adding in superfluous procedural layers like deep breathing, intonations to be loving and kind, psychotherapeutic jargon, and four-day training seminars full of new age cant is easy to do for what amounts to a simple psychological hat trick.

Breathing in for 50 seconds and holding your breath for 7 minutes then exhaling for 2 hours is the one way to feel true mindfulness.
