    Hot take: Turing is going to be known as the Vista of graphics cards. It was built for a world that didn't exist, with features that nobody really used properly, yet needed to happen so the next version is something people actually like (Windows 7, Ampere).

      100% agree. I really struggle with review sites / YT videos that do not mention ANYTHING bad. It's like, who are you being paid by...
      It's the same with Amazon reviews. What would you trust more, 300 reviews 5* or 300 reviews 4.5*. At least with the 4.5 I know someone real has used it / reviewed it.

    • @TheStigma
      @TheStigma 5 лет назад +25

      Yup. LTT can be sloppy at times, but they have good intentions and do the entertainment aspect really well. That goes a long way. Sources that aren't transparent and capable of independent critical though are useless.
      I'd recommend Gamers Nexus as a supplemental source. They tend to go much deeper into the nitty gritty with less entertainment, but they also have a very low threshold for BS and they aren't afraid to voice their opinions. They also put up their own 2080 review just now (and it's a good example of what I just mentioned).

      Yes never has he not called out bullshit. The coolermaster snafu with that high airflow case gamers Nexus reviewed poorly. Other prominent tech RUclipsrs were still running the add. I would of cut the contract and paid the penalties but they just ran with it. Linus only does adds for established product lines which is really smart in hindsight.

      Navi is good tech with high potential. They probably won’t be able to compete with the 3090, and maybe they won’t compete with the 3080. But I completely expect something that will compete with the 3070 at an aggressive price and performance.

    It's August 2023, I came back to this video because I missed the good old LTT, this is the quality I subbed for. One thing I also missed is the pricing of 2018. 2000 series cards may have been a bit rushed but an 80 type gpu costing 800$ is a dream now, the 4080 msrp is 1200$ ffs, plus all the other issues that came after this era of gpu with scarcity, mining and so on. We didn't know it at the time, but 1000 and 2000 series were the golden age.

      I don't think Linus said it wasn't worth the money. Compared to the 10 series--*if you want the highest quality of frame rates at 4k ultra possible*--the 20 series is a no brainer. Does that mean its not "worth" it? Well, that depends on what you care about, how much you value your money, ect.
      What Linus said is that this thing is not released as advertised (something that does seem to be ubiquitous among pc gaming). Simply put, no one can actually try ray tracing. The problem here is that what they're trying to sell this thing as is ray tracing.
      Its absolutely absurd that Nvidia is going on about how ray tracing is "the holy grail" of gaming or whatever, and then no one can actually review this important feature (and the same thing goes for the new aa method as well).
      If Nvidia simply marketed this card as a significant improvement over the 10 series, and then also said that ray tracing and deep learning super sampling will be coming, but not included at launch, then it would be hard to criticize them on that. Maybe we could say "why release it if you have features that aren't ready?" But at least there wouldn't be this appearance of subversive marketing that the current RTX launch is surrounded in.
      Honestly, my take is that I think Nvidia is deliberately trying to piss people off. The more people that are pissed off, the more people get polarized, divided, and the more media exposure they get.
      I don't think they're stupid, I don't think they're evil and trying to pull the wool over our eyes. I think they just know how to troll, and they also know that trolling brings attention and therefore cash.

      They can "blacklist" all they want, most of the reviewers will likely just pony up to get the cards themselves, as they make more off their review videos than the cost of the card. Then consumers get to hear about Nvidia refusing to give products to anyone who bad mouths their STUPID decisions, then their popularity starts to wain. Which is exactly what Nvidia doesn't want to do (if they have any brains left) because if they start making consumers dislike them and their practices and AMD launches anything even remotely close to their GPU's, then Nvidia will eat a HUGE loss.

    This situation of a powerful, fast new card with a feature set that wasn't used anywhere outside of benchmarks felt familiar, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it until I saw a comment on TechReport; this is the GeForce 3 all over again, over seventeen years ago. At that time the only thing that really supported pixel shaders was 3DMark 2001, and the "must have" game that would use the technology was going to be Doom 3. Which got pushed back to 2004, when a GeForce 4 or a Radeon 9700 Pro stomped all over the GeForce 3's performance. The preliminary number's I've seen with ray-tracing turned on (over at Ars Technica) at 4k or 1080p upsampled to 4k are still below 60 fps even in carefully structured demos like the Star Wars elevator one.
    Ray tracing could dramatically revolutionize how we render games once developers and hardware manufacturers get everything coordinated. I just don't know if the RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti are the cards one should buy if they plan on keeping this hardware for four years or so.

      I personally don't think people should buy into this generation of Nvidia cards, the RTX technology seems like a pipe dream at this point considering, like you said, the 2080ti (which is $1,200) has been shown to struggle keeping 60FPS with the feature turned on. The RTX series of cards definitely don't seem for gamers, no matter how hard they try to market it that way. They offer a boast to performance over the 10 series, but one that's negligible if you already own a 10 series card. I don't see the benefits of me upgrading my 1070 to a 2070 when I have no issue running any game at max settings, GTAV has been the only game thus far I had to tune some things down for but that's due to my cheap CPU (i5 6400T... i know). You also have to consider the huge impact console gaming has on the industry as a whole, not many companies are going to waste resources making an RTX enable version of a game that's going to sell more copies on an RTX-less machine, the games we see being made now are probably done on a direct request from Nvidia to demonstrate the new tech rather than the developers doing it out of their own charity.

    Obviously we don’t have the benchmarks for the 2070 yet and I’m not sure if it will outperform the 1080 simply by being newer or if it’s more of a replacement for the 1070/1070 ti.

    Linus...the 1080 beat the 980 Ti. The 1070 was roughly on par with the 980 Ti (within 10% iirc, depending on the game).
    The 980 was faster than the 780 Ti, with the 970 coming close to the 780 Ti's performance.
    The 2080 only matching the 1080 Ti is pitiful. Especially when this generations non-Ti 80 card is a higher price than the previous generations 80 To card. Normally the next generation non-Ti 80 card is 100 bucks less at launch than last gens 80 to card.
    This is the first time you're paying more for the same performance, instead of less for higher performance.

      I mean while you are not wrong the tech gap between the 900's and the 1000's is fairly large. It's like comparing 600 series to 700 series. While I won't be purchasing a 2000 series card for a long while i'll be happy with my 1050TI, Will I have issues running stuff four years down the line? Maybe? We don't know. But the thing is the RTX Cards are a step up with promising tech being supported for games to come. Hold your torch back and wait till we ACTUALLY GET some RTX enabled games coming late november.
      Also Founders editions are always overpriced. Gotta love enthusiast cards.

      @@sirbraxton9386 thanks to you boost 3.0, pretty much any aib 1080 (I can only think of 2 outliers ATM, a zotac and an msi) could beat any 980 ti. It was only those 2 cards and FE cards (which were reference/stock cards) that couldn't.

      @hypershadow5g 5 лет назад +1

      @@D.Xanders the 700 series was just a node shrink and process refinement of the 600 series, they were the same tech (both Maxwell series cards). The 1000 series was all but confirmed to be a node shrink of 900 series cards, because when accounting core for core and clock for clock, the performance of the cards were nearly the same. The node shrink just allowed for much higher clock speeds, and in the case of the 1080 and 1080 ti, allowed for more cores

      I can't remember where I heard it, but before the RTX prices and samples went out one of the tech channels said that could very well be what Nvidia hoped as it turned out they have a massive stockpile of GTX 1080 / GTX 1080ti cards as they expected the mining craze to drive a lot more sales.

    Still have my 970, just gonna get a 1070Ti and get an RTX card when these things can actually handle ray tracing properly (i.e. in 1-2 more gens) - early reports, like not being able to hold 1080p/60fps when RTX is enabled, ain't good.
