This was interesting - however, not sure mixing mobile OS and desktop OS gives a super clear comparison.
Embedded System OS inclusion would push Linux pretty high up the list as well - a lot of commercial electronics use Linux as the basis of their products (fridge, ovens, hot tubs, thermostats, etc, etc)

Android is based on the Linux kernel. So in a way, Linux on the desktop (or mobile device) finally won and is now the #1 OS. Just not in the way most open source advocates envisioned.

All computers at my school used in South Africa until at least 2011-2012 when Windows 7 got rolled out on the computers that could handle it or new computers brought in (I think the old ones were then given away). In my UK years after March 2013, at the primary school through to the first 2 years of high (2016 or 17) they never upgraded to Windows 8 or 8.1 due to the bad reception even though the computers met the hardware spec and when the school wanted Windows 10 they just replaced all the computers.
In my year and half working at an a bit of everything lifestyle store the offices computers had Windows 7 Pro on paid ESU until May when they upgraded to 10 despite its end of support in 3 years (no word yet if Microsoft will do a similar thing given what they found when XP ended support in 2014). When Vista was released it was full of bugs and was probably the buggiest version of Windows ever released. Also, computers of the time did not have enough memory as Vista needed at least 2GB to operate smoothly but most computers of the time had only 512MB Also the drivers that worked with XP needed to be changed and weren't always available. Vista had several design shortcomings fixed in Windows 7 such as most operations requiring permission which got very annoying and the memory management of the video RAM.

Looking at the data sources and that it is adjusted by user-agents, a more correct title would be "Most Popular Consumer/End User Operating Systems 1999 - 2022" because OS used on servers are more or less ignored because a server normally don't make outbound browser connections and therefor has no user-agent to measure.
This explains why Linux, even as it is the most used server OS, never makes it over 5%.

Interesting to see how popular Win XP was - and whilst it was at a time when there weren't very many alternatives, it was really only killed when MS stopped supporting it in favour of Win 7/8.
IIRC, MS even extended the period of service time for XP by an extra five years, because it was so popular and they didn't get a better decent version out in time...
Of course, what I would like to see is OS data for pre-1999, because there were a lot fewer devices, and a lot had proprietary OS built in...
I mean, that was a time when you had to state whether software for PC was IBM-compatible... before the standardisation of Windows 95...

"Numbers are showing market share by specific OS, measured by amount of units shipped worldwide". Yes, that explains why there are almost no servers mentioned (they would bring up the Linux share to roughly 90%) and Windows 11 despite being still some sort of beta has such a high share. Almost every Win 11 shipped machine in companys gets downgraded to Win10 for reliability or Upgraded to Linux to work productive. And mobile devices are mixed with normal devices, I think it would make sense to divide mobile and productive devices apart. Shooting portrait films with mobile Devices for Ticktock and doing productive work with normal landscape Monitors are to very different usecases.
If Adobe would make their software available for Linux, Apple devices would suffer and get around 3% market share since Apple really tries to get rid of their loyal customers, the only reason to stick to Apple is Adobe.
Windows 11 shoved many people to Linux Mint, in combination with e.g. Softmaker Office (only paid once) and Nextcloud this is an alternative since more than 4 years which actually works.

I might upgrade to 11 and get an alternate start menu solution. I looked at how hard it would be to build one, and it didn't look easy. I actually thought 7 had the best start menu, where you could custom pin a couple of programs at the top if you wanted. 10's start menu is ok, but pinned programs insist on doubling the width of your start menu. The default was the huge mess of live tiles that you had to remove one by one with each install also. What would you say is a good improvement in windows 11?
