Great! I've been looking at several different designs by several smiths on smaller swages. This is one of em I'm gonna end up doing. Im growing fast and need it yesterday lol! Looks good, and looks customizable. If one gets all the prep done like length and such different sizes could be added all in one tool. Thanks for all the vids. 🍻

Nice concept, I considered doing something similar but thought I would need to have a pin on each side im glad I saw this before going to all that extra effort
Having a pin on each side is probably better as that would reduce any side to side play. But it's definitely not necessary. Plus, there's more to get in the way... Thanks.

This is also a nice method of forging a custom rivet, just chop the finished tenon above the shoulder and you have a nice rivet!

See I'm lazy, I would have sandwiched those two pieces in the vice and pre drilled my holes so I wouldn't have to do so much filing. 😂😂 That's pretty cool how it looked like you put a center drill in the end of it.
I was thinking about stacking the two pieces and drilling but I only use a hand drill and so thought if I skew things to one side it would be exaggerated over the longer drilling distance. Thanks. Glen

What’s the hammer called you used to make the square hole?
Hi Mike, That's just a square, tapered punch. But if you don't have such a punch, you could also just take a piece of square stock, taper it a bit, and work it into a round hole and get the same result. Thanks for watching.

Simple, neat and effective tool. Good idea! BTW, is that 3/4" bar stock you are using? (19 mm, I guess, in your part of the world).
The square stock for this tool is 3/4". The round bar I form a tenon on is 14mm... Thanks for watching.

Off topic question. Do you bring your tools (anvils) inside when not using them? Or do you treat them before the end of work with some oil or something to keep them so clean?
Drew, Good question. I leave most of my tools right where they are. While I am outside, the area I am working in is covered. I sometimes spray and wipe down my tools with WD-40. Also, frequent use will help prevent most rust. Thanks for watching. Glen

its a blacksmith's leg vice. they are all over ebay- in the UK anyway. people are falling over themselves to sell them!
Bear, My vise is actually a bench vise. It's a Record No.6 made in England. I have it mounted on a free moving stand and so it wobbles some when I use it. Thanks for watching. Glen

What do you use as an anvil
As you can see, my anvils are small, block style ones that I designed and had made here in Taiwan where I live. Thanks for watching.
Nice. A place for forging should be directly top a hole on anvil. By this unwished moves of this jag will be eliminated. I guess...

Great blacksmithing skills
The fact that you're hammering while you're sitting seems to make your hammering less powerful.
But I guess you have your reasons...
Sharon, I think it's right to say that my hammer blows are less forceful since I'm sitting. But I rarely ever strike with full force, even when I stand. I started sitting once I moved (back) to Taiwan and found my workspace limited. It really suits me. Thanks for watching, Glen

just trying to think of where i need to make a tenon in blacksmithing. any obvious answers i am completely missing??
Look at a few other videos of shaping reins on a pair of tongs, or the handle of a long spoon. Any time you want to reduce the work from non-round to a round section, or from round of a greater diameter to one of lesser diameter, this is a very useful tool for getting a consistent shape and size. Also, if you can't easily get steel stock in a size to match your punches and drifts, you can use this tool to make rivets of suitable size size.

For me persoanlly, I don't weld in my current shop and so a tenon like this (and accompanying mortise) can be used to join pieces. I will make a video of a simple mortise ad tenon joint soon. Thanks for watching. Glen

Ray, That pen I use around the middle of the video is a paint pen / marker - good for marking steel. Most craft supply stores should sell these. I also use talc sticks to mark work but it wears off easily and is much less visible. But the talc sticks can mark work when it's hot whereas you would destroy the paint pen's felt tip if used on hot work. Thanks for watching.

Just put the two pieces of material next to each other and drill a hole through on the joint. I think this will be much faster and no gas used.

True what you say brother, you can go skew with a hand drill. I must say that this small hollow was done very skillful. I can see it's not the first time that you did it. Happy day to you brother!

What would have been wrong with a simple hinge at the end? I feel like you've made this far more 'involved' and open to inaccuracies than it needs to be.

Mark, I actually thought about a hinge but for me personally, I thought that might not be as easy (though I guess this depends on which style hinge). I also felt a hinge, at least a hinge that I make, might not be as accurate as far as lining up the top and bottom pieces. But you're right, some sort of hinge would be perfectly fine. Just get yourself a combination square and a scriber with a carbide point brother.
