  • @ecyranot

I've seen a lot worse. A couple of observations: If they put in automated umpires, we will find the strike zone is in reality very small, and pitchers will have to adjust their delivery, assuming the computers are programmed according to the rulebook. The high strike zone will be much more honored, and pitchers will pitch higher, which will make strikeout pitchers more dominant. Without the soft inside and outside pitches being called strikes, though, I think scoring will go up. As for now, they know who the good home-plate umpires are. They have the statistics. The best solution is to identify the best and have them assigned as permanent home-plate umpires, whatever crew they are on. Of course the union won't let that happen, is my guess.

Credit to the catchers with framing on some of those pitches, the ump’s can’t see what we see, but some of those are absolutely egregious. Especially the ones in the bottom of the ninth with RISP, straight up blowing games. Absolute joke. Can’t wait for robo umps and challenges on strike calls to put these clowns in their place.

Problem is, you could have filled up hours upon hours of pitches similar to these on the season. It would be one thing to call a corner strike and then call a pitch just off the corner a strike, but too many times a pitcher can throw the ball in the same location 4 straight times and have the count be 2-2. As a pitcher and a hitter, that makes your job harder. If a guy behind the plate is consistent, you can adjust, even if it is adjusting to balls being called strikes and strikes being called balls. Consistency is the key. But these umps nowadays are nowhere near consistent, other than the idea of being consistently bad.

You have to get the sense these umps know they will not be punished. With technology, fans and players know immediately if the correct call was made. Perhaps if MLB starts fining umps for missed calls it might improve. I doubt it, so we might as well just implement the robo umps behind the plate.

My questions is why does the home plate umpire even exist? MLB has the technology to replace them and yet still fail to do so.

  • @steveo288

Umpires themselves are making the case to go to some sort of automation calls behind the plate. I believe they are still needed on the field but home plate? Not really. Plays at the plate can easily be settled by replays.

part of this problem is umpires follow the wrong thing and that is the catchers glove and not the ball if and when it cross the strike zone

In little league, my teammate got hit in the leg, and the umpire called it strike 3, and the manager came out and cussed out the ump, and the ump ejected both my manager, and the manager's son because he was just standing there pissed off because his dad was thrown out so he had to sit on the bench 💀💀💀💀💀
