SONG FACTS: A native of Cameroon, Manu Dibango has enjoyed a long career as a musician and songwriter, developing a fusion of Jazz and African musical styles. This song which was released in 1972, came early in Dibango's career, and was introduced to American listeners by the legendary New York City radio DJ Frankie Crocker on FM's WBLS radio station.
This song made the US Top 40 only briefly, but later became notable for 3 reasons. The first is its refrain, "Ma-ma-se, ma-ma-sa, ma-ma-kossa," which Michael Jackson borrowed for his 1983 hit "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," but without Dibango's permission. Dibango eventually reached an out-of-court settlement with Jackson over the lyrics. Dibango also had filed a lawsuit against Rihanna. When Rihanna came calling in 2007, asking to sample Jackson on her song "Don't Stop the Music," Jackson agreed - allegedly without contacting DiBango. www.theguardia.... The third reason is the genré, and the pop culture phenomenon, that the song set in motion.
"Soul Makossa" was so popular as a dance song that its style began to be emulated and further developed by American dance musicians - and eventually took on a life of its own. As a result, this is now widely regarded as the first Disco record. Whenever it was dropped on Dance floors in New York it lead to "dance battles." Blacks, Italians, Latino's and Whites couldn't get enough of this groove and strutted their stuff when this monster tune came on.

I remember the Soul Makossa song..
It bring backs memories when I used to hear it.
I never knew that Manu was from Cameroon!!!!! I was 2 years old when this song came out. I always went crazy (as everybody did at the time) when this banger played on the radio. Back then before there was anything such as a Google Search I was told that Manu was from Zimbabwe and I always believed it without any verification to tell me otherwise. I recently got my African ancestry DNA results and found that my mother's DNA lineage is in Cameroon. It"s not an epic realization but a great coincidence for me. Now I'm gonna bop this s!*t even harder.

Manu Dibango used to say that Michael Jackson had not been fair enough with him, as this was plagerized by the latter in the first song "Wanna be starting Somethin", the opening tube of his magnum album "Thriller", released in 1982, and which is still to date the world most sold album...Manu released his "Soul Makossa" in 1972, as the hymn to the African Cup of Nation, a football event that Cameroon, his country, was hosting in 1972...so this song as just strike 50 years...had Manu its author not passed away last year due to Covid, he would certainly had celebrated it at the opening of the last African Cup...help in January in Cameroon! In brand new stadium, just as in 1972 Cameroon had just got its first stadium!

Facts!
I can see why Michael Jackson studied this music and the dance of these people...but I wish he gave them credit...
Hey hey love this music 😃
He gave credit in more ways than one by going to the continent of Africa with his charity work and foundations throughout his career. He was also crowned an honorary king in the West African Ivory Coast. Michael was truly loved there. He had much respect from the people in Africa.
Manu Dibango was never mentioned by Michael Jackson and MJ never mentioned that he learned to dance from these people he stayed silent and just gave money to charities ran by the UN and we all know by looking at the news in Africa where that money really went.........so like I said....he should have given credit so these people could have benefit directly for their contributions to his success.....not kept silent and give money to organizations.Manu was an artist just like him....just because he was not known the way MJ was doesn't mean he didn't deserve his flowers and appreciation....if anything he should have been on stage with MJ ....not hidden and then after MJs death a journalist found out that MJ used this song and never credited the artist or the dancers for their part....
@@justmisterp That has nothing to do with giving credit to Manu Dibango
@@mrtnm121 they think it makes up for him using this music and style. It doesn’t though.
