      Depends on what a person wants to get out of its given life^^. If all one wants to get out of life is sitting and playing games, then winning a videogame is winning the game of life. And everyone has the right to do with their own life as they see fit, regardless of someone elses opinion. Although everyone also is entitled to their own individual opinion, they have no right to enforce that opinion on another individual.

    To the people that say "videogames are just an escape"... Life is hard. It's no wonder people want an escape. And there's millions of escapes out there. Drugs and alcohol, promiscuous sex, pathology eating, you name it. I feel videogames can teach you things (Not all of them, mind you) the same way that reading will teach you things. It's a matter of balance. Remember all time investment is an investment, and some games can be a really huge time sink. If you plan on creating a career out of videogames, be it through streaming, becoming pro, learning videogame design and creating your own games, then by all means, go deep into it. But if not, I would suggest that you keep them in check, in the same way you would keep drugs and alcohol in check if you don't want them taking over your life. Because they can take over your life if you let them (anything can, really, but videogames can be specially addictive). Now, this doesn't mean that it's bad to play games. It's probably a much better option than mindlessly browsing Facebook or RUclips. The issue is balance.

    I feel like gaming is a form of escapism. I used to game a lot when I was a teenager, that was when I was very anxious and depressed and felt I could get a sense of power and control from video games. If you're familiar with Nietzsche's concept of "will to power", it makes sense that gamers are wanting to feel a sense of power through a virtual simulation instead of the real game which is real life! It seems like a waste of energy and time to want to level up some in game character, when you could be levelling yourself up in real life by acquiring new skills, overcoming insecurities, working out etc. One of my closest friends spends his time off work gaming, while he develops a bad case of "nerd neck" (forward tilting neck) , complains about hating his job, and doesn't plan on improving his life. The issue is, if you find gaming to be very alluring, maybe it's because it allows you to take your mind off really progressing in your life, while you still get to feel some sense of accomplishment through levelling up or winning a game against others. If your also taking care of the important aspects of your life and growing, then thats great, but if your using gaming to allude you into a false sense of accomplishment, then thats a problem. I write from my own experience, seeing the life of many of my friends who have many insecurities and social anxieties and are also addicts to gaming, it's an interesting correlation.To me, the last thing they should be doing is playing games, they should be reading a good book, and progressing themselves in their REAL lives. Games aren't inherently bad, it's just that a lot of young guys tend to be avoiding responsibilities personal growth and gaming instead!

      If gaming is a complete replacement of the search for power in real life, then yes, that's a problem. But even the 50 hours a week thing is a minority, even for kids still in high school.

    • @yarnotnap
      @yarnotnap 7 лет назад +4

      Brocht Vasquez the purpose of what Jordan Peterson teaches is for us to become stronger and eventually be able to not have to escape from reality, so I get what you mean about freedom of choice, sorry if that came across as judgmental, it’s just frustrating to see people not make the best time of their potentially most successful years.

    • @qotsa007
      @qotsa007 7 лет назад +8

      I also get what you are saying and believe me I understand you, as I myself try to excercise, work for school and have social contacts that are 'healthy'. But what I mean is that at the same time also this is a form of escapism; 'becoming my full potential' (whatever that might mean) is just another way of ignoring the meaningless of life. Some do the same thing by gaming, drugs, etc. What I mean is that the one thing isn't objectively better than the other; it's only when your method of escapism makes you misserable that it becomes a problem. So for a gamer who's perfectly happy; I don't think that's any worse than someone who works hard and is happy. I'd say the key comes down to being happy (and not hurting others). Ever heard of Sisyphus? I believe Jordan has some lectures on that as well.

  • @demiserofd
    @demiserofd Год назад +3

    The biggest threat of Video Games in my experience is that, unlike other activities, there is no real natural limiting factor to keep you from doing them forever. Take sports; after a certain amount per day, you get tired! Once you get worn out, it's much easier to go home and do something with value, like read a book. Of course, you don't HAVE to do that, but the point is, there's a natural stopping point. Other activities, even addictive ones like drugs, have economic stopping points like running out of money.
    Video games don't have that. They don't wear you out, they don't cost money(once you own them, which is too late), you can easily just get into them and never. Stop. Worse than that, many game dev companies intentionally try to make them as addictive as possible, which is horrendously immoral.
    If video games were designed with natural stopping factors, then they'd be an almost universal good as far as I can tell. They're a fantastic way to explore and learn. But the way they're designed now is just so focused down this horrible rabbit hole of microtransactions and gambling, it's just unacceptable.

    • @NegativSpace-pd6cz
      @NegativSpace-pd6cz Год назад

      This is a good perspective. I think the essence of videogames is good, it's just that greedy corporations who have taken control of 99% of popular game production and they spend a lot of time thinking about how to make more money from the idiots who are willing to pay for microtransactions etc.
      I say we need to go back to the good ole days - no microtransactions, gambling, and all content included in base game.

    • @tgchan

      Very well written. I've came up to the same conclusion. Games are like junk food, sweets and other man made things that have no limits or maybe even better put; their limits are moved to extremes. So it's super easy to overdo it.
      It's really hard for me to overdose fruit/vegetables and books ;p but games... easy... and when I get bored I can take a 5min break, eat something, watch and I am ready to go for another 4h lol. I might delete my steam just because of that/ But again. Real life isn't that good either... It's not like you are committing to something amazing instead. Real life is rather sh1te to be honest in comparison/

Gas is also expensive and ridiculously low quality. A few of the reasons I don't have driving as a hobby. Gaming is also expensive because taxes also make PC components way pricier than they should be. The thing is: he acknowledges going pro for the reason that you have to find yourself a stable incoming you can rely on so that you're not a burden to other people. I fully agree with him on not wasting 50 hours a week playing videogames. I think you should spend at least 36 hours a week on something that you make your income grow exponentially like a trade school or a decent major in college. On the off hours, though, provided you take care of yourself by sleeping properly and take care of your home/room, there's no problem in having a little fun.

    Video games can, in a sense and not every game and every time, lift your soul to God and/or at least a higher realm. This can happen through Beauty, like beautiful sceneries on Zelda Breath of the Wild or many Indie games, or Marvel's Spider-Man and many other games worthy of the hashtag #VirtualPhotography. Also, the making of a video game and the video game world itself can be used as a sort of parallel or analogy of Creation - the game, with all its beauty and purpose, is an intentional thing made by a creator (designer, developer, artist, etc.). If a video game has all this, how much more would not our own world have a Creator?
    But video games can be highly addictive -- or distracting, and it's easy to stay and play "one more level" and next thing you know it's much later than reasonable for you to have a good day the next day, for example.

      It's a fine line to ride attempting to point out an unhealthy habit or affliction without triggering or traumatizing when that original affliction is actually caused by some form of trauma. You risk them doubling down and then you'll completely lose them. Particularly when their issues are expressed through immaturity. Gaming today is probably becoming much more about environment as so many parents are actually the ones introducing their kids to it and encouraging it, same with the k-5 educational platform. So much content is coming in the form of games on a screen now ever since tech basically took over the institution.

    Jordan Peterson is really interesting (or maybe he's just a human :)
    I was in Sutter Hospital once recovering
    and a male hospital worker came to me to help a little
    he mentioned how I might be interested in Jordan Person (I assume because he got a lot of value from him)
    I told him (at that time about 2 years ago) that I considered Jordan Peterson to be the Psychologist with the greatest Renown.
    The hospital worker almost cried and went away to do whatever.
    Fast forward 4 months later.

      George Kaftan That's something I think we overlook sometimes in parenting. Obsession and infatuation should always be checked whether it's games, books, movies, tv, Internet etc. I remember my daughter was obsessed with a series of books and I made her take a break and everyone thought I was a raging Nazi for grounding her from reading. About a year later she went back to it but then hopped around different subjects. Same with my son and his comics. I think it's better to spend the majority of our free time interacting with the physical world around us. We're just hyper aware with the video games today. I grew up with an Atari and then a sega but just never had an interest. I took the no video or computer game route with my kids and they ended up playing occasionally at friends but never took an interest as adults. I just don't get how we got to a place where it's emotionally healthy for adults to dress up and play pretend, watch cartoons, buy and play with kids toys, or escape all the time and become so apathetic when it comes to the real world. I mean there's billions to be made off of people like this, but it's still unhealthy.

      From what I understand, you should check what meaning videogames have for you to evaluate how much time you should spend on them.
      But to measure meaning, you have to listen to yourself. And the more you lie in your life, the more your brain get twisted. So the less you can rely on it to evaluate meaning.
      So put simply: don't lie, or your brain won't be able to tell you how many hours you should play videogames.

    All i heard was bla bla bla. in a short variant of everything he said : " you waste your time with games" like he s not wasting his time, he always does something productive. Fucks this shit man, i got only a life. If after i got out of work i came back and i wanna play i will do it because is making me feeling good and is not an drug and is not damaging anything, is just a way to waste time. If i wanna stay with my gf and play something i will do it. We waste time in many ways, we are busy, we got tired of shit we deal with day by day , we are stressed... the gaming is.. not just a world, is a lot of worlds where you can be who you want, you can do what you want. If i want i can drive without wasting real money on gas, if i want i can live in idk Far cry 5 and shoot lunatics, if i want i can fly a plane, i can construct a space ship I CAN EXPLORE THE UNIVERS I CAN DO WHAT I WANT AND WILL BE INTERESTING! Our life's are boring and if not are expensive to don't be that way... we live only one life,i guess,nobody can tell me why we and the univers and everything exists... Nobody! Or what really happens after we die, because nobody knows for sure. all i know is i got only one life, i don t know if i will see my gf after i die and this feeling is killing me. And i don t know if i will be able to do everything again... be with her or playing something or watching a movie. All i know is i live and i die at some point and if i wanna play i will do it. and games,yes are making kids angry and things,but i play till i was a little kid and now I'm extremely calm and from a killing someone in real life and killing someone in a virtual life is a big big way... Games are making us smarter, fasters, we can understand easily, in a room full with people a gamer can recognize a familiar voice and know exactly who is and from where is the sound. Just... shut the fuck up and don't blame games for giving us a better life.

    I don't know, gamers seem to have a lot in common with adults who watch anime and other cartoons. They're almost apathetic in the real world but super pumped to just escape into a pretend world. I mean they're literally adults dressing up and playing pretend... And see it as perfectly healthy. They also buy a lot of toys... As adults. I don't know if they were traumatized somewhere, just emotionally unintelligent or maybe they're just raised that way because their parents are the same? And there's this stereotype that in order to be a 'nerd' you must be intelligent... Maybe these aren't nerds and are just socially awkward dorks because I have yet to actually come across an intelligent adult that games a lot or watches cartoons on the regular. They're definitely lacking self awareness too. And all of the young kids my kids know that are heavy into gaming and anime and cosplay are either massive perverts, some form of LGBTQ and/or are suicidal. I actually feel really bad for these people. I'm sure reality seems like a major pain in the ass for them.
