  • In this video I build a simple DIY electromagnetic grinding stand. It's something I thought of over a year earlier. I wanted to build something that held metal parts, especially parts cut on my Crossfire CNC plasma table so I could grind off slag and smooth out edges without the need to clamp parts down and grind around the clamps.
    Crossfire CNC plasma table from Langmuir systems.
    Here’s an affiliate link to the Crossfire website if you are interested in checking out the table

    A mate made something similar to that a few years back. He used three of the mag door locks (got then from the skip being a shopfitting company). One mag lock was facing up, and the other two down with a Thin sheath to motorcycle tire inner tube rubber stretched over it all. He used it on his steel welding table to lock small parts down for filing. It worked really well for that (Except for when the it would grab the hand file and hold that too. :D).

    I just built on of these too I also used the door lock magnets from amazon. mine were the ones rated at "650 Lbs" holding strength but I did find that if you get any little bit of grit between your part and that magnet it has barley any hold at all. this has resulted in many small parts shooting across the shop at light speed.

    The electromagnetic strips are used to hold a fire door open. In the event of a fire power shuts off and the door goes shut. These are a good strip for your project Mike as they are meant to stay powered up for a looong time. I actually thought you would recycle something like the clutch coil from an ac compressor, or parts from a microwave oven transformer.

    I've been using permanent magnets to hold parts at my work station for a long time. 5" cup magnets have a 90 lb. pull and hold parts securely for grinding. The work station is a 4 foot long 3x4" angle iron held in a heavy vise at 40" height (my perfect working height). I can grind edges of parts on 3 sides from the end magnet position of the angle iron. So long as parts extend past the magnet 3 or 4", I have enough leverage to just twist them off and flip them or switch parts (a helper sometimes switches the parts while I can just keep going with the grinder running in my hand). We process batches of parts quickly in smooth flow with no clamping. Also use the cup magnets for making special jigs and squares, etc. They hold down straight edge straps I drag the plasma torch along. The strong magnetism does mess with the mig welder somewhat, so I don't weld close to the magnet.

    make it a foot peddle so you can keep your hands free when trying to position a part and also mount it to something as that plywood base will just move around for bigger applications and yes argon is a shielding gas that's not flammable but its best practices to keep your tanks free from harm as if a piece of metal from grinding breaks that tank your shop is going to be a unwanted participant of the SpaceX mission

    • @ianbuilds7712
      @ianbuilds7712 3 года назад +2

      I think having the option to run it on a battery or power supply would be ideal... As for the idea of making both sides magnetic that's flippin genius... Another simpler way might be to make a block on the bottom that would make possible to clamp it into a vise... Since the feet already lift it off the surface, that piece could probably be added without changing anything..

    • @carmo9693

    • @53rdcards
      @53rdcards 3 года назад +1

      @@carmo9693 Ohh yeah, the battery would likely have to be one of those large lipo's that rc cars use, and you would have to also wire in a low voltage alarm for it as draining the battery fully kills it. thankfully those alarms are very cheap and easy to get. the ideal solution would be a old laptop battery or something similar like a power tool battery.
