IM putting a MASSIVE statement out there now but paul heaton is the best lyric writer on the planet and is SOOOO underated, love all Housemartins and Beautiful south sngs and every one tells a story, This generation don't appreciate this type of music and its very sad! it was a pleasure to share a pint with Paul in my local pub in Hull called The Grafton, great bloke superb songwriter!!!
Just got back from watching him in Manchester, jacqui had to pull out due to throat issues. He is amazing, best singer I have seen..... And I saw Freddie in 86. Will go to see Paul again and again, always a pleasure
I am 64 years young and can go back to the early Beetles. But if i had to choose the 3 greatest bands of my lifetime they would be.THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH,DIRE STRAITS AND R.E.M.In any order.
Cream Cabs. Brings back memories of my time in Hull. Saw Paul in the Turnpike. He told me it was his birthday so I bought him a drink. Twenty-five years later I realise he pulled the same trick on every daft star-struck student kid 😂😂🤣
The best band, ever, there isn't one song over all the years that isn't great. Superb band, superb lyrics. Their music had been with me through all of my good and bad times in life.
i love this song was played at my cousins funeral...was one of his fave's sadly he hung himself :*) RIP PAUL.... i miss u sooo much not a day that goes by when i don't think of u hope ur having fun up there we will meet again one day... xxxx
I once had a friend who I loved from my heart But I went on and left her 'fore I'd made a start Now I'm moaning the blues like the rest of the charts Take me back So I'll cry with a limp Just get by on a limb Till these blue eyes of mine, they are closed So here's to an old fashioned peck on the cheek And farewell my sweet Northern Rose Give me one last love song To bring you back, bring you back Give me one last video, just dressed in black, dressed in black Give him a chorus and that bit at the end Where he wails on and on 'bout the loss of a friend Let him scream loudly 'well this love could mend' Let it die, let it die Those bloody great ballads we hated at first Well I bought them all, now I'm writing worse Save us from baldness and saving the earth Take me back And I'll smile with a limp And I'll love with a limp Till the clouds disappear from above And as the storm moves away all I can say Is there's a towel on the door for your love Give me one last love song To bring you back, bring you back Give me one last video, just dressed in black, dressed in black Give him a chorus and that bit at the end Where he wails on and on 'bout the loss of a friend Let him scream loudly 'well this love could mend' Let it die, let it die, let it die
Why on earth do we forget such great music????? When we get sooooo much crap forced up on and around our ear holes so constantly????so loved seeing you and brianna in concert with the lightening seeds way back when xxx
great song and a wonderful video "those bloody great ballards we hated at first, well I bought them all now I am writing worse, Save us from baldness and saving the earth! Great lyrics
@TheDiddlysquat I agree with you entirely, The Beautiful South and The Housemartins were in a different league in the 80's and their work is quite timeless. Intelligent lyrics and talented vocalists and great musicians.
A genius lyricist !!! Dave Rotheray providing the music One of the most successful writing duos since Lennon/McCartney and to think Fatboy Slim was the bass player in the housemartins !!!
I don't know why I'm probably way off but I just always feel like this song appears as an homage to Briana Corrigan... Hear me out "Once had a friend who I loved from my heart but I went on and left her before I'd made a start".... Kind of self explanatory if you imagine it about briana "farewell my sweet northern rose" Briana corrigan is from Northern Ireland "Give me one last love song to bring you back" Because she sang lots of love songs in the band and he's saying one more to bring you back, implying he wants to hear another song by her "Give me one last video just dressed in black" Eg the video for bell bottom tear that she sings and is dressed in black "Give me the chorus and thst bit at the end where he wails on and on about the loss of a friend" Implying she does the full song and he just does the chorus and the end part (they also fell out due to disagreements in song writing and singing, maybe that's what it was over her wanting to do most of the songs and him do the chorus, also backed up by the fact he says give HIM the chorus) also loss of a friend because obviously she isn't there anymore I won't go on forever but just open your mind to the idea and the more you hear and think about it the more it seems to make sence 🤷♂️... Just a theory I could be way off

I concur. He's an amazing vocalist also. The best unacknowledged singer I know of.
Totally Agree and Jacqui Abbot is one of the most underrated female vocalists of our time.
@@MJ.71 love em both
among the best, they still stir in me ,deep emotions, not sure if anyone else does that
Just got back from watching him in Manchester, jacqui had to pull out due to throat issues.

I once had a friend who I loved from my heart
But I went on and left her 'fore I'd made a start
Now I'm moaning the blues like the rest of the charts
Take me back
So I'll cry with a limp
Just get by on a limb
Till these blue eyes of mine, they are closed
So here's to an old fashioned peck on the cheek
And farewell my sweet Northern Rose
Give me one last love song
To bring you back, bring you back
Give me one last video, just dressed in black, dressed in black
Give him a chorus and that bit at the end
Where he wails on and on 'bout the loss of a friend
Let him scream loudly 'well this love could mend'
Let it die, let it die
Those bloody great ballads we hated at first
Well I bought them all, now I'm writing worse
Save us from baldness and saving the earth
Take me back
And I'll smile with a limp
And I'll love with a limp
Till the clouds disappear from above
And as the storm moves away all I can say
Is there's a towel on the door for your love
Give me one last love song
To bring you back, bring you back
Give me one last video, just dressed in black, dressed in black
Give him a chorus and that bit at the end
Where he wails on and on 'bout the loss of a friend
Let him scream loudly 'well this love could mend'
Let it die, let it die, let it die

This is a perfect expression of me, I fell in love, had a daughter, but I ran, because I was weak
Many did b4 you and many have since, doesn't make you weak. Sometimes just meant 2b

@TheDiddlysquat I agree with you entirely, The Beautiful South and The Housemartins were in a different league in the 80's and their work is quite timeless. Intelligent lyrics and talented vocalists and great musicians.
I lost to heaven my soul partner last my month `My sweet Northern Rose` xxx
This song a bridge from your soul to hers.

A genius lyricist !!!
Dave Rotheray providing the music
One of the most successful writing duos since Lennon/McCartney
and to think Fatboy Slim was the bass player in the housemartins !!!

This is beautiful. But times 1 000 000.
Listening while on lockdown
I sang this through a very long labour (27 hours) my fourth baby, the midwives said they never had that happen before ,
Lovely song.
Love this song. Never did understand the video, though...
I don't know why I'm probably way off but I just always feel like this song appears as an homage to Briana Corrigan... Hear me out
"Once had a friend who I loved from my heart but I went on and left her before I'd made a start".... Kind of self explanatory if you imagine it about briana
"farewell my sweet northern rose"
Briana corrigan is from
Northern Ireland
"Give me one last love song to bring you back"
Because she sang lots of love songs in the band and he's saying one more to bring you back, implying he wants to hear another song by her
"Give me one last video just dressed in black"
Eg the video for bell bottom tear that she sings and is dressed in black
"Give me the chorus and thst bit at the end where he wails on and on about the loss of a friend"
Implying she does the full song and he just does the chorus and the end part (they also fell out due to disagreements in song writing and singing, maybe that's what it was over her wanting to do most of the songs and him do the chorus, also backed up by the fact he says give HIM the chorus) also loss of a friend because obviously she isn't there anymore
I won't go on forever but just open your mind to the idea and the more you hear and think about it the more it seems to make sence 🤷♂️... Just a theory I could be way off
Much underrated song.
