I TOTALLY agree good old days can't beat it brilliant went to see them live what a day and R.E.M after them brilliant best day's be4 all this internet was out people was out not on phones
@@LittleRichard1988why were they a favourite of everyone's mum yet us young ones still really liked them too without buying anything of them or going to see them live? 😂 Real curiosity for such a great band.
My first concert of Paul, 66 yrs old, my two gorgeous daughter in laws dragged me to it...absolutely amazing if I live long enough I will go again 💕💕💕🦩
As a teen everyone was going mental over Nirvana and Pearl Jam. I was part of that crowd but secretly I was totally obsessed with these guys. To the Beautiful South; thanks for making my teenage years tolerable. 🍻
Heaton is the most underrated songwriter of the last 50 years. I don't share his politics but I respect him fo runnng the BS as a co-op. And for his generosity towards people he was carrying. He is a genius, simple as tht.
Tory ideology has destroyed Britain for at least forty years, no make that over one hundred. At least he has used his position to condemn them in no uncertain terms.
I've been a huge fan of Paul since his early days with the Housemartins, the Beautiful South years, his solo career and now his renewed collaboration with Jacqui Abbot. In my opinion he is one of the greatest songwriters ever. Cole Porter meets Lennon/McCartney with a dose of Dylan and Guthrie thrown in for good measure.
He is a born romantic like me. It's organic. I sing constantly it's what keeps me going. Every song he writes is based on his life. He is looking for his one true love. He won't settle for second best like me. I still haven't found mine but have complete faith. Not will it happen, it will happen. God bless 🙏
I now know why this song makes me cry so much. My dad remarried after my mum died and I still imagine them together as old folk. It will never happen cos he remarried... and sadly to utter trash. Working through grief takes time...
[Verse 1: Paul Heaton] If, if you choose That we will always lose Well then, I'll sail this ship alone And if, if you decide To give him another try Well then, I'll sail this ship alone [Pre-Chorus 1: Heaton] Well, they said if I wrote the perfect love song That you would take me back Well I wrote it, but I lost it And now will you take me back anyway? [Verse 2: Heaton, Dave Hemingway & Heaton] Now if, if you insist That this is for the best Well then, I'll sail this ship alone And if, if you swear That you no longer care Well then, I'll sail this ship alone [Chorus: Heaton, Hemingway, Hemingway & Heaton] I'll sail this ship alone (Ba ba, ah) Between the, the pain and the pleasure I'll sail this ship alone (Ba ba, ah) Amongst the, the sharks and the treasure If you would rather go your way, then go your way I'll sail this ship alone [Verse 3: Heaton, Hemingway, Hemingway & Heaton] If, if you're afraid That I won't make the grade Well then, I'll sail this ship alone (Ba ba) And if, if you agree To him instead of me Well then, I'll sail this ship alone (Ba ba) [Pre-Chorus 2: Heaton, Hemingway & Heaton] Well they said if I wrote the perfect letter That I would have a chance Well I wrote it, and you burnt it And now do I have a chance anyway? [Verse 4: Heaton, Hemingway & Heaton] If, if you swear That you no longer care Well then I'll sail this ship alone [Chorus: Heaton, Hemingway, Hemingway & Heaton] I'll sail this ship alone (Ba ba, ah) Between the, the pain and the pleasure I'll sail this ship alone (Ba ba, ah) Amongst the, the sharks and the treasure If you would rather go your way, then go your way I'll sail this ship alone [Outro: Heaton] Well they said if I burnt myself alive That you'd come running back
brings back memories of a wonderful love for nearly two years with John, we each never had the guts to tell each other how much we loved each other, what a sad loss for us both, still love you though xx
Desi I am with you up to a point, having married a truly awful woman who caused me huge pain and upheaval but we share some truly magical kids.I now "sail this ship alone" and enjoy doing so , but am glad it wasn't always that way.
@@fgbenquiries3547Actually, by most standards, awful fails to do her justice. It is along time ago now, and I have never had the slightest bitterness or anger towards her since then, but she truly was "that awful".
Seen the band recently. A lot younger here but bringing it right up to date at their gig - quality still brilliant with voice and performance first class!! Great night!
You didn’t choose my darling brother, but hey ho I sail it alone , just for you and always in your beautiful memories.... thank god I had my wonderful brother by side through all of the shittiest times of both of our lives, love you always Kieron xxxxxxxxx
A great friend shared this with me tonight. He has a heart of solid gold and I care for him like family. Thank you for sharing this it means the world to me and it's a GREAT song ! Brings lots of good feelings to me. You have a heart of gold............. thanks again !
one of the best vocal performances of its decade (and beyond)...proof - if it were needed - that heaton is the best male singer from england since...god knows...bowie, probably...maybe elton before he lost his tenor register...maybe some of blues rock singers of the early 70s...
The Beautiful South are so underrated,so many British hits they compare with Lennon and McCartney.........this song makes me cry thinking of those I've lost or pushed out of my life 😢😢
Just heard this song in the tv show Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators - Season 1 Episode 10 (Ill Met by Moonlight). It was played toward the end of the show in a scene at a formal dance party. I couldn't help but notice the great song being played in the background.
I never saw this video but have heard the song. The video reminds me of Madness' video for One Better Day somehow. And who needs noise or crowds anyway....?
They are from my hometown Hull :D Although of course Paul Heaton is from Sheffield, it is wonderful to see a band that has made it from my area. I want to be a singer/songwriter when I am older and the Beautiful South is a great inspiration for me. My favourite Beautiful South song, incredibly beautiful piano intro :)

One of the most underrated groups of my generation. Paul Heaton is a LEGEND.
Never under rated, who's tripe gave you that idea? Kick him or her up the ass

Deffo...seen him an Jackie last nite...still buzzing
....clads
Agreed! But they have their cult following 😉💪🏻
I absolutely agree with you
Why is this band so underrated, they are up there with the best in my opinion. Paul Heaton is one of the best songwriters.
I agree, my Mum loved them and so did my friend's Mum. I would even go as far to say they are on par
with The Beatles and Queen!

Sometimes we have to sail the ship alone...
Use to it now!!
Beautiful South had so many good songs but this is right up there, not just one of there best but one of my all time faves. What a band they where!
Mine too Gary, You are right for me that Beautiful South had so many good songs.
Best song best man he put thousands of pounds behind pubs to celebrate his 60 birthday cool dude he his
Such a beautiful song. Makes my eyes fill up. Paul makes singing look so effortless. Fantastic voice and brilliant songwriter.

Gets me the same way every time. Big boys do cry when confronted with real genius and beauty.
BRILLIANT. Paul Heaton is a modern day Brian Wilson IMO x

I'll sail this ship alone (Ba ba, ah)
Between the, the pain and the pleasure
I'll sail this ship alone (Ba ba, ah)
Amongst the, the sharks and the treasure
If you would rather go your way, then go your way

To him instead of me
Well then, I'll sail this ship alone (Ba ba)

Well they said if I burnt myself alive
That you'd come running back
What a beautiful song. Glad I found it on Shakespeare & Hathaway ❤

I think this and Prettiest eyes have to be my two all time South favourites - beautiful
beautiful south remind me of good times
they sing about the heart . and our lost loves. if we could turn the clock back. youth is so fleeting and then its gone.
The Beautiful South -- truly a great band. I saw them twice -- two wonderful nights
Such an under-rated band !!!
AN AMAZING VOICE TO GO WITH AN AMAZING ORCHESTRA ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT ❤️🦋🌈
They write great songs that mean something to everybody. thanks guys.
Accessible, intelligent and insightful - home grown but reaching out to the world of ordinary people trying to lead extraordinary lives.
How very well put if I might say
written with love and feeling! for sure we all need to make a proper respectful day where we all say thank you to the lads who saved us!!!
One of the best ever songs still listen to it in lockdown 2021

Paul and Jackie you gave us so much pleasure that we never had to sail alone........love you both. xxxx
Best way to get through life, sail your ship alone,no pain or hurt.
