Out of the small fraction that have completely fessed up and said they regretted doing what they did, this is the only one who I ever felt was truly speaking from his heart and not just saying it to get you off of their back. This guy already has so much to be proud of, it's a shame that he's done so much damage to himself by feeling like he needed to be something more. I think it was very kind of you to cut this one a little break Don.

I share those same sentiments exactly. This guy is very, VERY near the end of his life and in a way i think this is the only one of hundreds of these I’ve seen where the phony finds legitimate redemption. I’m not super religious but I was raised going to baptist church and I believe in the New Testament of the Bible and that Jesus Christ is our savior. I only say that because i find it so satisfying that it is entirely possible coming clean, confessing, and being genuinely remorseful now may very well have saved this man’s soul from going to hell or being stuck in purgatory. I don’t think someone should be cast off to hell for stolen valor provided they were at least a decent person otherwise and did more good for their fellow man than they did bad in life…..I’m just saying there’s always a last straw that breaks the Camel’s back, and it could be that one last act of redemption that reverses the “last straw” and ends up tipping the scales to a much better life in the next existence.

My father was in the USNavy Seabees for 23 years (reserve), and he had a fellow CPO that he caught falsifying his records back in 1968, or so, and he fessed up to it immediately. Then proceeded to go home and blow his brains out. It was a shocker because he was such a good friend to my dad, and loved talking to me about WWII stuff. The real pisser was that he didn’t really claim very much more than what he really did. But back in those days it was much more scandalous (or so it seemed) and he was very scared to live with it apparently. At this point I'm hoping he's able to find some peace and forgiveness of himself!
