Hi Stephane, I was nine years old when this game came out, and I played it on my family's first DOS PC. Thirty-two years later, I am still listening to this soundtrack. The incredible music you made is the definitive soundtrack for all things Dune, to me, and I'm sure to many more. Maybe because I only knew the Soundblaster version of the music from the PC CD game, but I much prefer the Adlib Gold version. The MT-32 sounds too orchestral (realistic?) and doesn't have the mystical quality of the Adlib version which I associate with the game. I mean MT-32 sounds great on Monkey Island theme and I remember wishing I had a Gravis Ultrasound/AWE32 in those days but the Adlib bleeps and pings def have something/nostalgia over the realism of the others. This is in the top 3 of one of the most memorable and beautiful soundtracks to any PC game I have ever played. Other is LBA and perhaps Monkey Island.
Music for PC games in the past was a complicated thing. Sometimes composers didn't make the music thinking about or using the most expensive hardware available at the time or they just used what they had at hand so the music of some games actually sound better on specific hardware or systems. Sometimes some composers were asked to actually re-made the music for different hardware or for re-releases when new tech was available like the Monkey Island main theme for CD. (but also sometimes it's just the natural thing that our brains typically prefer the music version we listened the first time ever).

Why is the dune theme SO MUCH better on card than in Spice Opera? It's totally awful on Spice Opera, it's like he doesn't understand it all. Then he gives us ONE glimpse of how sweeping and epic it is it on Dune Variation and never follows through
Growing up I always desperately wanted to hear Spice Opera as I always imagined it would be the definitive version of my favourite game soundtrack, freed from the constraints of 90s consumer sound card technology. When I finally got to hear it for the first time it was kinda... cheesy, very 1990s, and honestly pretty disappointing. Now tonight I've instead found that definitive version here and I am loving every second of it. It sounds timeless.
Let's say "different", it was the first version, my own vision of the music for Dune. The producers of the album "Dune Spice Opera" wanted me to add a commercial touch, more drumbox, robot voices, gimmicks... The result is a different feeling. You will be happy to know that the digital remastered 2024 release will feature a special bonus track, a remix of the original PC OST🙂

Indeed! If you check on the VGMPF Wiki, here : www.vgmpf.com/Wiki/index.php?title=Dune_(DOS) you will note that it's only present in the MT-32 version of the track, and none of the AdLib / AdLib Gold versions.
Great job!! I think Dune, being a great game by itself, is one of not-so-many games (another two I can remember instantly are X-Com: Enemy Unknown and Zeppelin: Giants of the sky) with FM soundtrack that sounds really cool on that cheapish (even back in mid-90s) OPL2/3 "Soundblaster" synth (Not that shitty General MIDI emulation lots of the games, including such hits as Doom and Warcraft, have used unless one was lucky enough to own AWE32, Gravis, or better). Dune's music engine really puts Adlib chip to it's limit, and I always thought it is a cleverly chopped-down version of a MIDI track produced for some professional FM synth. But thanks to your video, now I can compare it to MT-32 and Adlib Gold - and I must say, they sound great as well. But could you add a few more details, please - namely, what type of gear you did use for each of the tracks? I definitely can distinguish OPL chip from (semi-sample-based) MT32 even though I've never seen the latter, but the differences in sound between Adlib and Adlib Gold are somewhat vague for me - my first sound card was an AWE32 (and it did cost a hell of a lot for me as a teenager in not-so-rich-then country), so it was already a few years past Ad Lib Inc. got bankrupt...
The gear I used if I remember correctly, were an AdLib from 1990, an AdLib Gold, and a LAPC-I (mostly interchangeable with a MT-32 in terms of sound). AdLib's chip is an OPL2, while the AdLib Gold's chip is an OPL3 - more voices, stereo sound AND more operators for each voice. the Gold also adds the option to use digital sounds (unavailable on the AdLib, something that Henri Chalifour used in some demo songs) and surround module that adds depth and reverb to the whole. But FM being FM, even with more voices and all the additional effects, there will always be that coarseness, that characteristic electronic sound, even on the Gold. In that sense, Picq used the same instruments and percussions on both versions, and I have to agree with you, the AdLib version doesn't sound -too- chopped down compared to the Gold. In part because of the sound similarity, but I believe that Picq was very thoughtful when rearranging the music for the old AdLib : my impression is that he opted to conserve sonority, more than individual notes, and it seems the choice paid off.
Hi, can you share the separate recordings, preferably as downloadable FLAC files? I've made my own recording on a SB Pro a long time ago, but I don't have an Adlib Gold or a MT-32 to record those versions. And that was an OPL3 card, not an OPL2 one. It's odd that some tracks have different length in certain cards. Spice Opera is twice as long on the Adlib than on the others. The floppy version also has different sound files for each 3 sound cards, you can see them among the game files.
Sadly I haven't kept lossless recordings of this, but I'll try to do it next time. And yeah, the song lengths puzzle me as well. I'll probably do an in-depth video on this specific detail someday because it intrigues me.
@@theSoundCarddatabase would appreciate listening to the non lossless version as well, at least it isn't compressed by RUclips, reducing its quality, though i still listen online often for convenience.
Would it be possible to do something similar for the Dune 2 soundtrack? I often listen to an MT-32 recording of the Dune 2 soundtrack but I wonder how it would sound in this style, combining the sounds from 3 different soundcards
+Carlos Teixeira Nice to see you here, Carlos. Only Sietch had 5 or 6 missing notes, the other songs were mostly intact... so it's not as bad as I made it sound in the description. I had downclocked the processor as much as possible but you are right, a 386 would have been better suited. Hope you still liked the music despite this! Also thanks for dropping by, I appreciate it.
You got a very cool result! Would you like to try doing the same with the Dune 2 soundtrack? Many people AdLib version like more than MT-32. But in AdLib, not everything sounds perfect either - the crossing could have come out better. I would recommend recording MIDI tracks separately in a sound editor. And then mix each track from different sources
This is great!! You really did amazing work here mate; this is my now my favorite rendition of the amazing DUNE soundtrack. You should try this process on the Zone 66 score too, if possible!
Ooh, Zone 66. There's another game I also remember for all the trouble it took to launch in DOS, requiring its own dedicated boot disk. (Dune's CD version finally obviated that hassle.) It was a cool game, from what I remember, but very difficult, though maybe I was just bad at arcade style games. I don't remember the soundtrack at all, though.
Only the thumbnail on this one has Chani, but not the video itself. However, my next video of this kind (multi-soundcard) will indeed have screenshots :)
Amazing. I thought that it should be something awful before hearing but what a surprise ! Perhaps you did a great job, for sure. Many thanks, it's a real pleasure. What could be the same job for Doom ...
While I appreciate the effort (this my fav soundtrack after all), I must say that pure Adlib Gold kick ass... let's say that I appreciate "SCDB - Korean Demoscene songs on NOTE Tracker (AdLib Gold)" much more :).. but this one has Gold too... so let say - it counts :]
I also prefer the Adlib Gold music most of the time. It does kick ass when well-utilized by composers. Fun fact is that one of the original brainstorm ideas for this channel was to be focused on Adlib Gold rather than sound cards in general.
@@theSoundCarddatabase Was there really any purpose to including the Adlib version here, then? From what I remember, there was no difference between the Adlib Gold and Adlib versions of all the tracks; the Adlib Gold just sounded like a higher bitrate.
@theSoundCarddatabase - is there anywhere we can download this? I love banging it out while doing chores around the house but hate getting interrupted by ads when I try to play it off my phone to my headphones
I'm really sorry about that. None of my channel is monetized, for that exact reason. Disappointing that you still get ads. For a download, I don't have the source files anymore, but I'm still looking through old backups for a miracle maybe. Will let everyone know if I find anything!
@@theSoundCarddatabase Much respect, thank you. The ads never showed until a few months ago and it's only on the RUclips phone app, I know it's not your fault - RUclips is greedy. Good luck in your search, thanks again!
This is sick bro! Is there a way to export all the automation done on the adlib's operators as audio CV? that coupled with midi tracks would open new worlds of hearing the 3 versions of dune on completely different hardware. Imagine the possibilities...
I don't have the technical knowledge to answer that question sadly! Pretty sure some memory-resident software could be made to "listen" to the instructions sent to the AdLib and write them in a file as it goes. But I would have no idea where to start :)
Indeed my MT-32 recording was a little on the loud side! Stéphane Picq himself has done a better rendition of my idea which you can listen to here : stphanepicq.bandcamp.com/album/dune-spice-opera-2024-remaster-lp The game soundtrack (AdLib + Roland) starts at track 13 :)
@@fl4shblade yes and no... from what I know, both games were developed in parallel, and each team knew of the existence of the other. I might be remembering wrong, but I think the team at Cryo even got access to early builds of Westwood's Dune during production of Cryo's Dune.

Amazing stuff! Any chances for flac?
Hello! 96/24 Hi_res Audio 2024 remaster available. Fully enlarged stereo spectrally enhanced with boosted dynamics, Bonus OST dual soundcards rendering included! Enjoy!
Thank you for posting this. Memories! Has to be the most influential game soundtrack ever made...
Totally agree! Thanks for taking the time to listen.
totally disagree, but what makes u happy
Aside from Klepacki's Dune II soundtrack, what other music ever made sounds like this??
Jeu mythique
ouais musique magique et player de dingo !
@StephanePicqDune just wanted to say I really appreciate your work. One of my favorite soundtracks ever.
@@gregmantis Hello! You will be happy to know that a FREE download of "Arrakis" is available on my personal BandCamp (snake profile).
This 2024 twin-soundcards version is remastered in Hi-Res Audio 96/24 as will be the others ingame tracks included as a bonus with "Dune Spice Opera remastered", out in januzry 2024.😊
@StephanePicqDune It's really wonderful to hear that this work will be remastered, because it is iconic and evocative and touched so many of us as this comment section shows. Very much looking forward to the remaster you mention.
Thank you for your work, it has stayed with me since childhood.
I love those synthetic tabla sounds!
They sound surprisingly faithful to the real thing, even though a little one dimensional
Wow the combination of the soundcards it wild! This is an awesome idea! I'm now gonna do this for all kinds of games :D *fun*
Awesome
this is just beautiful.
You found a way to make my favorite game soundtrack better!
Hah, glad you liked! Thanks :)
This is simply amazing.
the best adlib soundtrack :)
I would tend to agree!
Thanks! I'ts great to listen to a variaton on these tracks.
I've never played this game and probably never will. But this soundtrack is a total banger.
Salut!
Simple Adlib wins. That is the genious of it.
such an underrated game, brings back good memories, gotta replay it soon, thanks for the upload
Hello Everybody! You like it?
The remaster of the album "Dune Spice Opera" in Hi-res Audio (96khz/24bits)
will feature special bonus tracks of the OST (mix Adlib-Gold+ Roland MT32).
Release in january 2024! Just type my name + "Dune Spice Opera" in any search! 😏
Stéphane Picq
18:35 - Worm Intro, do you know where in the game we can hear this song? it sounds like the Cryo intro sign, but then it goes silent fast
Absolutely AWESOME, great work!
Merci !
That extra piano tune in Arrakis @2:30 never heard before wow
Indeed! If you check on the VGMPF Wiki, here : www.vgmpf.com/Wiki/index.php?title=Dune_(DOS)
you will note that it's only present in the MT-32 version of the track, and none of the AdLib / AdLib Gold versions.
Kinda reminds me of John Carpenter's score for Big Trouble in Little China for some reason..Nice 👏👏
Glorious!
For the Duke!!
I still love the Doom OPL3 version...
Such good job...what historic game and OST
Badum-tss ;)
@@theSoundCarddatabase would appreciate listening to the non lossless version as well, at least it isn't compressed by RUclips, reducing its quality, though i still listen online often for convenience.
Would it be possible to do something similar for the Dune 2 soundtrack? I often listen to an MT-32 recording of the Dune 2 soundtrack but I wonder how it would sound in this style, combining the sounds from 3 different soundcards
It's in the plans, and in slow progress already!
@@theSoundCarddatabase A Dune II treatment would be sick. Thanks for making the effort of putting these together.
Magique!! Merci 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Plaisir!
Great effort but keep in mind the OPL2 chip is speed sensitive. Its better to use period correct hardware. A 386 would be great for this game.
Obtaining a working 386 seems like a bit of an ask for a hobbyist music project a quarter-century later...
You got a very cool result! Would you like to try doing the same with the Dune 2 soundtrack? Many people AdLib version
like more than MT-32. But in AdLib, not everything sounds perfect either - the crossing could have come out better.
I would recommend recording MIDI tracks separately in a sound editor. And then mix each track from different sources
Thanks for the great comment. Yes, Dune 2 will be mixed in a similar manner from different sound devices, I will let you know when it happens :)
Amazing bro
This is great!! You really did amazing work here mate; this is my now my favorite rendition of the amazing DUNE soundtrack. You should try this process on the Zone 66 score too, if possible!
Great suggestion, glad you liked! Someday I'll do it :)
I don't remember the soundtrack at all, though.
çà déchire, abonnage !
Is my memory failing me, or were there screenshots from the game itself in the video before?
Only the thumbnail on this one has Chani, but not the video itself.
However, my next video of this kind (multi-soundcard) will indeed have screenshots :)
Quite legendary this one.
Very best. Thank u.
Amazing. I thought that it should be something awful before hearing but what a surprise ! Perhaps you did a great job, for sure. Many thanks, it's a real pleasure.
What could be the same job for Doom ...
Merci beaucoup!
where could one download these songs right here, c'mon man
While I appreciate the effort (this my fav soundtrack after all), I must say that pure Adlib Gold kick ass... let's say that I appreciate "SCDB - Korean Demoscene songs on NOTE Tracker (AdLib Gold)" much more :).. but this one has Gold too... so let say - it counts :]
Is there a high quality download of this available? CD quality or higher?
This is so good!
One of the best...
I wonder how modern sound sources like sound fonts, digital pianos, or music software, render this..
I wish you had let tracks 1 and 2 run into each other like they sound like they want to do; it probably would have worked well.
Do the Planet X3 soundtrack next!
Amazing
I always liked the Amiga version the best but that was also what I was use to.
Sounds really good for the most part. Are there any other game OSTs that use the Adlib Gold well?
Asterix and Obelix originally on the SNES by Joe McAlby.
Noice, man!
Ah là là, la madeleine de Proust ❤.
Jamais entendu cette expression, merci de me l'avoir apprise! Et oui effectivement :D
@@theSoundCarddatabase I can't offer advice how to do this on bare metal, but DosBOX has a "Raw OPL capture" function that would do this for you.
@@AndrewFremantle Amazing, thanks for that knowledge!
Aweseome! Instant subscribe. :-) There have been similar videos made of Cave Story's music.
Thank you so much!
WarSong is Too in the Exxos Audio cd
Any chance you would be inclined to work your magic with the MegaRace soundtrack?
Yes eventually! After the AdLib documentary is out of the way, I'll come back more fully to the channel :D
damn good
I wish Brian Herbert would re-release the old games.
Sietch! Sietch is the best!
Very neat!
Glad you liked!
Reply with a Dune game quote.
I'll start.:
"I'm your mother, Jessica".
Gurney halleck is not here
"I am the Duke Leto Atreides, your father."
Spice Opera is so much better in this version.
Whaaat? Did you superimpose all 3 versions?! You missed the best track 😞
Which track is missing?
@@theSoundCarddatabase My bad... it's right there! Morning = Chani's Eyes Too mesmerizing!
Weirding modules ...
seems like lots of clipping :(
Indeed my MT-32 recording was a little on the loud side! Stéphane Picq himself has done a better rendition of my idea which you can listen to here : stphanepicq.bandcamp.com/album/dune-spice-opera-2024-remaster-lp
The game soundtrack (AdLib + Roland) starts at track 13 :)

the Sound Card database thanks! Btw @27:30mins you can see some where inspiration was drawn from the Dune2 soundtrack.
Very cool.
Thanks for uploading
@@bradz9413 Your statement doesn't make a lick of sense. This game came before Dune 2. It is the other way around
@@fl4shblade yes and no... from what I know, both games were developed in parallel, and each team knew of the existence of the other. I might be remembering wrong, but I think the team at Cryo even got access to early builds of Westwood's Dune during production of Cryo's Dune.
A boss
Where we can download this game for a free?
super odd for owner to remove negative comments. it's a fact that removing what makes the cards unique is a loss of information and unnatural experience.
