"Mad World" is a 1982 song by the British band Tears for Fears. The original has a very different feel. This Pentatonix cover of the song is actually a cover of a cover that was done by Gary Jules for the soundtrack of the 2003 film Donnie Darko.
The song also got a big boost in 2009 in season 8 of American Idol when Adam Lambert sang it in Top 8 week. He did the Gary Jules arrangement.
It also got a boost in memes when someone sang it very poorly. “All arewnd me are fameelier faces…”
The pentaholics went crazy over the matt and Mitch harmonies that we never knew we needed but were oh so glad to have.
This was done after formal lockdown but before it was safe for people to really be around each other again so they each recorded separately. This was one of their surprise one offs like the 90s medley but the timing of it as you could see was sooo perfect. I don't think you have done dreams yet and if you haven't it's a cover of the cranberries. They did it on the EP they recorded during lockdown. It is sooo beautiful pure 5 part harmony. So the next time you want a pure vocal I would suggest that one.
Dreams is a classic song
Agree. The Matt/Mitch harmonies❤️❤️❤️❤️
Also, for gorgeous 5-part harmony, you can’t go wrong with “My Heart With You.”
The #Mattch slap we got with their voices blending. Matt really has an infectious energy & was a perfect addition to PTX. Different from Avi but still aca-mazing!!
@@TheInkdN3rd agree!
This was the hauntingly perfect song for the times we were in when it was dropped. Yes, as others have said the original was by Tears For Fears, it’s much faster with a techno beat so this PTX arrangement was very different.
I need more Matt and Mitch harmonies. They blend well together
Agreed. They sound so beautiful together.
If you want to hear Kevin sing, ‘Little drummer boy’, ‘Mary did you know’, ‘imagine’.
And Amazing Grace (My Chains are Broken)
And the album or ATEEZ version of "A Little Space"
Imagine is super-powerful
Light In the Hallway (Scott wrote for his nephew & asked Avi to sing lead) and Run to You are also vocally driven and both originals.
Scott and Mitch wrote the song.
During the lockdown each member who didn’t already have an in home studio set one up so they could still create songs and gave us some beautiful music during that time. Kirstie talked about calling Kevin up and asking him for his suggestions on what she needed to add to her home to complete the studio. Truly a beautiful bunch of people. As sad as this cover is, I love listening to it add Matt and Mitch’s harmony which to me was everything to make this song so special. Great reaction.
You should listen to Messer’s (Mitch) Machine. It’s the most “POP” of his songs. Sounds very 80’s. I think you would like it.
I agree Messer is worth listening to -Machine or Love Supply. ❤️
This song was released in summer of 2020 after their EP Home. This was released during the pandemic but after the initial lockdowns. One of two perfect pandemic songs that year. The other was their original Thank You from their 2020 Christmas album.
I agree!
Yes
Hello Salvo G. This is a cover. it is a powerful song and PTX really does a good job.
If you want to switch to an up tempo I highly suggest their original Sing! It’s infectious & I can’t figure out why it didn’t get radio play…other than radio has a thing about not playing a capella groups 😕
It's a haunting melody, you don't want to hear it because it's so sad but you can't leave it because it draws you in. Great reaction.
Salvo, I can't agree with you more about the fact that we need occasional pure singing talent videos from this amazing group. As had been mentioned before, their cover of "Dreams" by the Cranberries is one such song. I haven't been able to collaborate it, so maybe someone with better knowledge that I can assist, but I heard that Kevin was instrumental in arranging this song.
Whether that's true or not, SOMEONE decided that beatboxing would take away from the song rather than adding to it, and I couldn't agree more.
What they do when arranging a song is to make considered, deliberate choices about who is going to perform which part, how they'll do it, and why. I'm sure there are a lot of behind-the scenes musical reasons why they do what they do, with some Italian words that explain the whole process but that's waaaay over my head.
All I know is that they know what they're doing. Holy SHIT, do they know what they're doing.
P.S. Could they, if they wanted to, re-arrange Dreams to be more upbeat and add a beatboxing track and turn it into a song we still love? Duh. So anyway, yeah... react to that one soon :)
The Gary Jules vs. from the movie Donnie Darko is what PTX was covering here. Excellent head trip of a movie btw.
Their cover of this song is so much better than the original, which I did not care for, while I love this version of the song. And the cinematography was so very inventive. Loved your comments, too.
Adam Lambert also does an AMAZING cover of this song!
Thanks for the reaction. I would like to see you react to “Machine” by Messer (aka Mitch’s solo project). I don’t suggest this to most reactors, but I think you would appreciate it.
I've been thinking he'd love Messer. I listen to his songs all the time, love it
I agree about machine. It sounds so much like Depeche modes people are people.
The only wrong thing about his songs is that there aren't enough of them. Roses is beautiful, Love Supply melts my face.
He'd love Boy in the Pictures too, for sure.
I think Machine is the best introduction to Messer and then expand out from there. I always like when there are videos, but they aren’t really needed for Machine.
@@annmc3878 Love Supply sorta has a video that's fanmade. Still quite good tho
Post Modern Jukebox does a really outstanding cover of this featuring.
It's best not to make assumptions about where PTX is going until the song is done! ;-) One thing: when you stop to comment, perhaps consider going back a few seconds when you resume. Otherwise you might end up missing great moments or transitions.
Please check out Kevin's solo "Down"
thank you for your reaction to mad world. I really enjoy all of your reactions very much. Here are a few other songs you may want to add to your list. First if you want to hear a song which highlights matt...try "you're a mean one mr grinch". also a few others are problem, starships, perfume medley. There is also an album of theirs which was recorded during the height of the pandemic called "at home". They recorded all of their parts in the songs seperately through zoom in their own homes then mixed....songs include blinding lights, home, break my heart, when the party's over, and dreams. I'll be looking forward to more reactions from you. Thank you so much for taking the time to do these ractions for us...it is very much appreciated.
This is one of my favorite PTX “a capella” songs 😄. I like Kevin when he fills out their 5 part harmony but I don’t feel his lighter voice would have been good for this darker song as a solo voice (in my opinion). I can’t remember whether you have done Run To You (original) or My Heart With You, but you definitely should. They are beautiful!
This is one reason why I love Pentatonix so much. I agree with you: Kevin's amazing falsetto would have detracted from the song had he done a solo, and I'm absolutely certain that he thought the exact same thing when he arranged his part and the other four members agreed with him.
They know what they're doing and why they do it. This is an ART and they are grand masters of their craft.
@@Eric1SanDiego1 Well said!
This is a sad song to me. I don't like listening to it all the time, I skip over it on my Spotify when I'm just not in that mood. It's very powerful though.
I can totally understand that reaction. I found it incredibly heart rendering the first time I heard their version.
This one is so epic! For a completely different vibe PLEASE check out their cover of Come Along- So upbeat, colorful and fun! 😁
the original was by tears for fears but the gary jules cover was more popular and ptx went more that direction with it
Stay With Me. Rozzi Crane, Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Carry Singer on guitar (live)
Cold Chills ♥️🔥♥️
Their talent never ceases to amaze me!! individually they sound amazing, but together...I mean come on. They are so unique with their arrangements and always seem to know who should sing what...unbelievable!
Another great start to my Sunday morning. This is the first place I come when drinking my Sunday morning coffee. Always great reaction.
I don't know whether you noticed the ethereal versions of each member gliding past themselves in the background. I think it really adds to the haunting air of their version of this song. Just one of the many details they add that makes their videos so special! Another one of the many things I love about their covers is that it introduces me to artists I would have normally not heard of.
As others have notes the original version was by Tears for Fears. ruclips.net/video/u1ZvPSpLxCg/видео.html
The version that PTX was closer to was by Gary Jules for the soundtrack of Johnny Darko.

There's no vocal percussion in the song, so Kevin is singing in the 5-part harmony that occurs throughout the song, but once again, he doesn't sing a solo. I know that he was not very confident in his singing when the group first started, as he wasn't recruited for his singing, but his beatboxing talents. I know that when he and Avi lived together in LA when the band was first starting out after the Sing-Off, Avi was helping him with his singing, and it seemed that in recent years we've seen Kevin doing short solos on more of the songs they've released, but not this one. I don't know if he didn't want to, or if they decided as a group that there wasn't really a place for him to sing a solo in the song, but I hope we hear more of him singing solos in the future.
This song is special sounding bc Kevin isn’t beatboxing, just singing. Makes it sound…softer.
Been subbed for weeks! You’re one of my fave reactors!
Adam Lambert also did a wonderful version of this.
It is a cover and the original was by Tears for Fears back in 1982. It has been covered by a few groups. This is one of my favorite PTX covers.
They dropped this in the middle of lockdown in the US and I immediately started sobbing then they unleashed “Match” (Matt + Mitch) and I was a wreck the rest of the day. Gonna keep requesting Amazing Grace until you relent!
I can't wait!!
I, too, would have like to hear Kevin in a solo here. When I first heard their rendition I found it incredibly emotional reflecting on going to the first day of school as a child.
Recommend the rest of the tracts from their Lucky Ones Deluxe album.
I think Powerful describes it perfectly!
💖💖💖💖💖
Great reactions !
I am greatly enjoying your pentatonix reactions .
If you like the vocal pieces , I would love to see your reactions to their original offering “ Run to you “ and “ can’t help falling in love with you “ and “ dance of the sugarplum farriers “
Yep, Tears for Fears original. just the vocal purity in this one is stunning.
The original album The Hurting by Tears for fears is a innovative masterpiece. Kanye’s Coldest Winter, used their song Memories Fade off this album. You’d be missing out, not hearing this gem.
This song was originally by Tears for Fears.
Awesome song and reaction. Thank you🔥
this cover sounds a lot like matchbox 20's version. love the message and haunting quality to the tune. without hope of a safe and joyful life people will turn a bit feral.
Have you checked out the original by Tears for Fears, in the 80s. This is good but they do covers after all
Superfruit anti medley try that,it's not respected enough
Live performance of their original song On My Way Home on Conan: ruclips.net/video/lGIJZXZ0T30/видео.html
FleetstreetVicomte, Thank you very much for the link. I had not seen that video of PTX on Conan. They were great, as always.
React to Azealia Banks 1991
The best version of this song is by Tears for Fears. I do not like the Pentatonix version, which is shocking because I love them.
Tears For Fears did it.
Tears for fears……Judy D
Tears for fears but it's much faster
