I want to point out just one detail, that during the excercise the knee on which you stand should be slowly straightened as you stretch the other leg and it helps to put heavy pressure on the toe of the leg you stand on, before "stomping" to help keep balance.
I have tried shiko before in the past among other sumo exercises and they are certainly no joke! I think the part about concentration is a great point. It helps you "tune in" to your body in a way! What I find impressive is just how high some wrestlers can raise their leg. Considering they do 300 or more a day, it's no wonder their flexibility is exceptional! I would hope to one day be that flexible! Great video, Ter!
Shiko helped my muscles imbalances and it has a serene vibe to it. Just doing it for time brings you to zen state . It's a must as it's like dynamic horse stance.
Implemented this also in my judo training, helps a ton with Uchimata. I even make shiko while waiting on the train, getting but quite the giggle and stare here and there ^^
Crazy. Just found this channel an hour ago and was like "huh, that's a kinda obscure channel, don't think it will have uploads on a regular basis". Few minutes later a new video is uploaded, although the last upload was over 2 months ago. Very unique and interesting concept, hope it prospers.
I've found that doing shiko as a warmup has been helpdul with kendo, too. Just like sumo, kendo uses explosive force from the legs and feet, so that's where most injuries in kendo are. Exercises that help improve flexibility and strength, like shiko, seem to have a better effect at managing injuries than taking long breaks to recover.
Shiko has helped me recover from a condition where I was born with no legs. Doing shiko twice a day has not only grown my legs but I've also started an online business selling spare legs that I grow every week. Thanks to shiko I've put my pet turtle through college.
You truly have an amazing channel. You’re a great content creator and deserve a lot more attention. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to this channel and us fans.
The Sumo Fest in Oct is looking to make a world record of the number of people doing this exercise. Hopefully some of your viewers here in Japan can help make this record a reality. I’m definitely going!
Terrific work! I had wondered for a long time whether shiko was really such great exercise or just traditional. I've dealt with knee pain for most of my life, and it would be cool to incorporate shiko if Hakuho was right about it being good even on injured knees.

We have something very similar (possibly derived from Sumo) in Karate- Shikodachi. Or 'Sumo Stance'/'Box Stance'. Holding it is just as good for the knees, quads, hips, glutes and core.
it's how i pray. i do a kind of dohyo-iri while repeating my prayer and try and get my shoki as close to abi style as possible. i do it 3 times a week, normally, and all 15 days of every tournament.
Hello, how are you? Long time no see Shiko? I didn't know about it, learn something new from the video today, you love sumo stuff wreas i love Nakizumo.🤣
As a personal trainer i confirm all you say here i use it with every client. The biomecanic behind it is godlike Your video explain all of the benefits really well
There's a reason Shiko is done for hundreds of years. Also horsestance is one exercise that is done for maybe more than thousand years that promotes similar benefits.
Could you please facilitate me the link or title to the video in 03:55? I'm doing research in sumo and that image is the same as a beautiful sumo-e piece from the XIX century! Thanks!
i did shiko for year but when i did my first sumo class i learned i did it wrong this all time one of the thing that is the most important is to put your knees the most on the exterior as possible
If you watch the older ones while the Yokozuna does his Shiko, you can see them time their clap with the stomp, very cute 😊 300 Shiko a day keeps my legs strong 💪
Not exactly "new" in terms of western applications in sports. Back in the 90s my high school football coach made all the linemen do this as part of our training. But he was also a huge sumo fan.
Of all the videos you created this one is the worst, full of information that adds almost nothing. A bit like those papers done in school that we fill with info because the subject of the paper it´s not broad enough.
It was this exercise that allowed me to walk again with a torn ligament in my knee. I avoided surgery thanks to shiko.
same here - blew out both my knees years ago and worked my way up to doing 200 shiko about 4 days a week. wouldn't trade it for any other leg exercise
thanks for this I'm having same problems and thought there was no hope for me great to hear others making it happen
Wtf, I would never thought that, In definitely gonna do it.
I don't think I could trust a guy named "piratefetishmachine jones..."
pray

shiko has helped me strenghten my knees, I wasn't able to run for a year and know I'm slowly pushing myself. 10/10 recomend.
Thanks for the recommendation

Yeah you will surely look weird doing that on public 😅😂
Don't pay attention to anyone staring or just smile and continue doing shiko, king 💪
I'm also a Judoka that does this hahahaha
@@jestfullgremblim8002 Same!
Definitely gonna incorporate this into my workout routine. Glad to see you uploading again. You always make such great videos👍

I tried googling sumo leg lift exercise last month and didn't get anything good. But your video is perfect and exactly what I needed! Thanks!!!
We use it a lot in karate. Has many benefits.🥋🥋🥋🥋🥋🥋🥋
Love your videos SumoStew, keep them coming!
great thhear ur amazing warm , comforting voice again... been a while and another great informative video xx
In ballet they call this "grand pliée à la seconde, développé, panché". Old vaganova teachers include this steps into an adage sequence.

very impressive. starting tomorrow
Great, informative video! Thanks for making the sumo community awesome
Loved this! Such a hard skill to develop.
Who's here because of Sanctuary?
Here
That show sent me on a deep dive of sumo research lol
@Chris Botts hahaha same. Now I'm getting lots of Sumo recommendations lol its my new sport
Researching Yokozunas and everything lol
@@cookdislander4372 Hell yeah! I love that Sanctuary has recently caused a surge in sumo fans!
Good to see u again
Well… I know what I’m doing tonight! Really glad to have another SumoStew video!!!

Thank you Ter! Great vid!
This is a great video. On Sundays I do 500 before keiko with the rest of my Sumo Team
What they do do with their hands is good too. Rotates arms in the shoulder socket.
Im struggling with very stiff legs and bad circulation after losing 30kg weight. This is helping me build stability, strength and flexibility back.

Yes!
A stretch, cardio, strength and conditioning all in one!
Then a big meal and a nap after!
i need to try these exercises!
These video are great
Excellent episode, could you please make more videos about sumo training and diet?
I love your content, I wish you put out more videos 😊
Working on it!
Always admired Abi's flexibility and balance in his high-reaching shiko.
Love it 👍🏽❤️
Just in time for some much needed break during my JLPT2 craming
Shiko is not going to replace Tai Chi or stretching; but I will add it to my routine.
This is awesome

I love your voice
no wonder most rikishi have legs like tree trunks. and i wish i was as flexible as Abi--his shiko is super impressive.
Thanks for making this channel and sharing ❤lots of love
Shiko easily fits into anyy Taijutsu practise
As a personal trainer i confirm all you say here i use it with every client. The biomecanic behind it is godlike
Your video explain all of the benefits really well
Im always amazed at how FAST these big guys move
4:10 which match is this from, does anyone have link to original video?
There's a reason Shiko is done for hundreds of years. Also horsestance is one exercise that is done for maybe more than thousand years that promotes similar benefits.

Welcome back sumo stew, we missed you ! Love your video graphics very beautiful
Off to do shiko like Abe
Why not use barbell squats and deadlifts instead?
What is a good rep/set range for this exercise? Also, does anyone think hindu squats give a somewhat similar benefit as shiko?
Abi might have the best one
The boys at Shikoroyama have also demonstrated that shiko is a good way to knead the dough for your udon.
Aww, so sad that Tokushoryu losing was in the background of the ad 😂
i did shiko for year but when i did my first sumo class i learned i did it wrong this all time
one of the thing that is the most important is to put your knees the most on the exterior as possible
What do you mean by exterior? Knees as far apart as possible?
Even though shiko is not a part of fighting it's the one move I associate the most with sumo.
The squat, balancing and flexibility it trains is definitely part of the fighting.
Rikishi..(Sumo wrestler) performs shiko 200 times a day... until your leg turns into bullets
Ngl i do this exercise everyday
Man i wanna do this but my downstairs neighbour will probably beat my shit up
You could probably silence the stomp. Like a tip toe. It should add to the workout trying to keep it silent.
BTW how are you guys enjoying this september basho? they are testing my boy midorifuji big time lol! he has faced nothing but killers since day one.
The pose Sumo take up before a bout is very like the grand reverence (plie) people did before Louis XIV.
This is how I'm mounting my motorcycle from now on.
Liking this video for Byamba content.
Sadly I live on the 10th floor 😄 If I do this here on the 9th the lightbulbs would getting loose under a week 😄😄😄
Damn it I came here too late and now that site you marked for beginners dont work no more 😢😢😢 4:18
I wanna know badly
If you watch the older ones while the Yokozuna does his Shiko, you can see them time their clap with the stomp, very cute 😊
300 Shiko a day keeps my legs strong 💪
Tried that once. My downstairs neighbor disagreed...
Did ten minutes of Shiko today had me sweating!
Looks very much like when im on the crapper.
Kototebakari future Yokozuna does a perfect shiko. Like Abi
Gluten AND abs? So this is the official sexymaker? Sign me up
Thanks to the thumbnail I promptly told RUclips to not recommend the channel again lol😂
i love you
Abi still has the best shiko. #MrFrogLegs
I would do only to drive away evil spirits from down stairs!
Hahaha watchinf wpisode 2
That seems like an excessively long sponsor segment, it's like a third of the video
Good video but the last 3 minutes are an advertisement. I get that people need to plug their sponsors, but damn half a video?
Love the video. Great editing. However, 1/3 of the video is advertisement. I understand that money needs to be made, it is just a bit much,
how many should i do to be able to grip coal into diamond?
Not exactly "new" in terms of western applications in sports.

I usually do this when I get a wedgie.
this is recomanded for women :p
What if a fart comes out?
you lost me when you said it "targets the abdominals". Not anymore than standing does.
:)
why do you sound american but at the same time dont sound american?
I think they're Canadian
@@sakumisan I'm Canadian. I was using American as a broad term for north American. Says her channel is in the uk.

One exercise ain’t going to compete with Yoga and Tai chi.
Which holistically train mind body and spirit.
