I feel badly that people like the mayor and first responders, nurses, etc., HAVE to stay. Everyone else is being told to leave. That is a double-edged sword that maybe the mayor and first responders want to go also but can't. Yikes.
Considering the number of storms that have hit Florida over centuries I am always intrigued by the lack of appropriate sea defenses. I lived many years in Normandy France where we had sea defenses up to 15 meters high and no settlements behind sand dunes.
Even islands in French Polynesia have far better sea defenses then Florida.
I sincerely wonder whether federal, state and local authorities in the US care at all.
