They can have quite the personality. When he was in his old tank, I watched my adult albino, Albert, skitter out the tank lid’s filter opening, scoot himself a couple inches to the filter top and plop himself into the filter. By the time I made it to the tank he was all situated in the filter, beady eyes looking at me. At that moment I put two and two together. I’d always wondered about the water stains on the lid near the filter that I couldn’t explain. I realized he’d probably pulled this stunt dozens of times over that past year, and he obviously knew how to get himself out of the filter, over the lid, and back into the tank. How he did it for so long without getting caught or flying off the tank made it even more amazing to me. That’s the day I fell in love with the bristlenose.
I experimented a little eith algae eating fish and the ancistrus was the only one that maintained the constant algae eating diet over time. I have one that is 3 years old and he's still going at it like in the first days of bringing him home. Very satisfied with the fish.
Awesome! My male and female that we had no idea what they were are these fish! And now we are expecting babies! They have red eggs and are super cool looking can’t wait for them to hatch this week!
My LF albino yellow is over 3.5 years old and his bristles have branched four times being barely over an inch long total. The bristles sway quite a bit in the current. The end of his caudal fin is nearly 3" wide. I have to farm algae from other tanks and outside in addition to NLS algae wafers to keep him happy. I can pick up a piece of wood when he is on it out of the water to admire him. He actually starves out the snails in his tank. And he always wins a stare-down contest.
I have a male brown bristlenose pleco named Toothless and I really enjoy having him in my comminuty aquarium. The only times I've observed him being aggressive is at feeding times; he likes to eat the shrimp pellets I put in for my cories and thoroughly enjoys zucchini (or yellow squash in the summer) about twice a week.
The ancistrus was my dream fish when I was a kid. I had a friend with a huge aquarium and this beast in there, and every time I went to hers I was just looking at him, in pure admiration. Unfortunately, my parents didn't want any animal in the house, except those goldfish you can win at fairs, and last 1 month if you're lucky enough. Fast forward to ±10 years later, when I got my first appartment in college, and was finally able to have my own, real aquarium. I finally got my first ancistrus last year, she's doing very well (she's 1 year old at least, don't know at what age I got her) and grew from 5cm to 8cm (roughly 2 inches to 3 inches). She's my baby girl, I love her so much I got her tattooed on my forearm. Her name is Bouboule (I call all my fish like this, with variations), it means "little ball" but in a cute manner, and she's the world to me.
+Elisa Spirateur wow that's a beautiful story. :) thanks for sharing! I have a little yellow baby one now. It's one of my favorite fish. My oldest ones have been around for 9 or 10 years now. Great pets.
I recently bought a secondhand tank with a sail fin pleco and a Cory cat in. The pleco was massive, and when we moved the tank we couldn’t find a net big enough to fish it out with. Eventually we got it into a bucket and moved the tank. The 160l was way too small and rather than chop it in at the LFS, my friend took it for his bigger tank. It felt like it had armour plating all over it, and was beautiful in a very steampunk way. I have 5 Dwarf Puffers in the tank now, and thinking of adding some Khuli Loaches. I’d never buy a pleco. In England they cost about £3, or less, but they grow to 2’ and live for 20 years. That’s longer than a dog!
I have one , but I never see it come out. It hides all day under a rock and on the rare occasion I find it out and about it promptly runs back to its cave when I come to look.
I don't know about petco.but on petsmart tags it normally tells you what you are getting into. the common pleco tag at my petsmart says that it will get 24 inches and need at least 55 gallons.
aquarium co op made a video where he got rid of his Goldfish tank. he had full grown albino ancistrus, it was like half the size of a 20 gallon tank. So when they're full grown at about 8 years of age they do get bigger than 6 inches
Thank you for spotlighting this species! I'm planning to put one in my 30 gallon tall....just gotta decide which variety I want. I plan to have black sand...so the albino or super orange variety may look awesome against the dark substrate. Gotta find a species chart!
I have one in my 55 and one in my 20. Both of them have dug down through the sand cap and kicked up the dirt underneath it in multiple locations. I love having them for algae control, but they irritate me at the same time with the digging. lol
Unlike the rest of the plecos the bushy nose (in my country we only call them "Ancistrus") are not growing huge like the common so basically we never get to see the commons in the shops. Lucky aren't we :D
Some do grow big, Ancistrus is the genus and contains some larger members, Ancistrus punctatus can grow to 30cm SL which is the same size as the common, Pterygoplichthys pardalis. There are quite a few reports as well of 25cm SL common bristlenoses, Ancistrus aff. cirrhosus.
I bought a second hand tank that the sellers had drained and had been sitting for a few hours. Got it home and acclimated the clown loach that they sold with the tank. An hour or so later, I went to clean the tank and started with removing the gravel. Found an adult male common Pleco lying there. He survived. There must have been enough water for him somehow. They are tough!
Love this species stunning as adults had one grow to an adult in a convict cichlid tank only to be killed and disemboweled by them after three years of living together hard lesson learned .Great video thanks for the info
I once had one that stayed in the same place for 3 days when I went to check on why it wasnt moving it was dead lol stiff as a board but it looked alive O-o
There are some really beautiful plecos, but my largest tank is the Flex 15 gallon, so I don't have any. I do have a common pleco in the 75 gallon I take care of at work. He is around 18 years old and going strong. Darn it. :) I would love to turn that tank into a planted aquarium, but there is just no way to do so while he is in there.
I recently purchased 4 bristlenose plecos and have them in my 34 gallon hex. That aquarium is getting moved to my 45 gallon aquarium and soon as I can tell the difference between male and female I will keep a breeding pair in the 45 gallon and move the other 2 out. Probably put one in the 34 again and then the other in my 90 gallon. I have them so far with java ferns and some sort of grass type plant. They have not harmed any of them. A few of my java ferns are growing new plants at the tips of leaves and even those have not been knocked off or anything. I am hoping that my lfs will take babies from me as credit at least since once they start breeding it gets out of hand lol.
I only have 1 pet store that I could do business with within at least 100 miles give or take a few miles. I am planning on taking 2 back to the lfs once I get a pair. So I can separate after a few offspring. I have a 34 hex, 45 gal, and 90 gal on sump freshwater tanks. I have had aquariums most of my life and have never had any fish breed. :( Always had successful tanks but never cared to try anything. Right now my cory fish are breeding although I doubt any babies are surviving and hopefully soon these pleco's.
I had a 600 salt water tank but then I drained it and put a male and female common pleco and one week later they laid a clutch of eggs and two months later I got a nuther clutch
My 3 fish were 3 ancistrus that I bought ( i had 0 knowledge)........You know what they were?....Common plecos........ Silly pet store.... Nobody wanted a 2 foot devil fish, so they went into a fish reservation :)), an emarald lake with a lot of dead trees and algae
I love bristlenose plecos, but I've never seen them in any LS in my city. Don't they uproot small/carpeting plants? btw that pleco 6:20 looks exactly like an oto from bh.
Mine just cleans algae off my plants, he's never pulled them up. Just make sure you have some kind of cave type structure in your tank to keep it from digging up the substrate.
Sean the guy at the store talked me out of getting a tiny Bristle Nose for my 5 gallon, I would love to find a suitable similar fish for Nano tanks. I have Pygmy Corys already in my little tanks but I'd love a Bristle Nose Plec. Even though I know I'd have to rehouse it later, it's good to know I could start one off in there. How fast do they grow? Thanks for this ; )
L173 white seam that you like, needs soft water. Others, like albinos, are interspecies hybrids and much more tolerant of hard water? They can live for 20 to. 25 years with decent care. One of my vry favorite fish.

Fantastic Fish and a Fantastic Review for one of my favourite fish. I always have Ancistrus in my tanks. Thanks for making this video.
Nice video! It is very interesting and informative. 😊
Just got my first longfin calico bristlenose today! Such a beautiful fish!
Awesome! My male and female that we had no idea what they were are these fish! And now we are expecting babies! They have red eggs and are super cool looking can’t wait for them to hatch this week!

+Catfish Cave the dad of the guy or girl I have is really cool. I'm hoping I got a male.
Catfish Cave mine also starved out the snails. 3yo ancistrus

Had one for About 20 years in a very large tank ! Love these fish

I think they're gorgeous
Love bristle nose, one of the best glass cleaners ever lol
Not one of the best
The BEST
Good video. I feed my bristlenoses mostly canned green beans and carrots. Works great for my ruby barbs too. Cheers
Just got one at my LFS and he or she's been doing a grate job
Awsome fish to keep
One of my favourite Pleco's
It's not a pleco
Great video Sean. Could not agree more with what you said. Love your all aquarium update videos. Make it really long! :-)
Will do :)
I have one , but I never see it come out. It hides all day under a rock and on the rare occasion I find it out and about it promptly runs back to its cave when I come to look.
Brilliant video, only if Petco and Petsmart would make common plecs a special order item, but I feel we may be hoping for too much.
I don't know about petco.but on petsmart tags it normally tells you what you are getting into.
the common pleco tag at my petsmart says that it will get 24 inches and need at least 55 gallons.
No one warned about them eating amazon swords. I still have my albino bristle nose but not the sword.
thanks for your video I really liked it. beautiful tanks behind you
Thanks!
I agree totally with you. My favourite pleco by far.
I just got a tiny bristlenose .maybe 1-2 months old for my discus tank and he's gonna love all that driftwood.
Great video and great info. I'm like you just love the Bristlenose! New Subscriber
I find them very interesting .Thank you for sharing
Super video man, !
appreciate the to the point information
lovely stuff
I love them, my boy is named Russell and he grew up in an African Cichlid tank so he’s tough!
I've only had common plecos until now. Now I have bristlenoses
The blue eyed, long fin albinos are stunning looking. I've them.
Pleco’s are a great fish.

great video, i got the albino longfinned green dragon plecos from greg sage 😁 there my favorite
I have one in my 55 and one in my 20. Both of them have dug down through the sand cap and kicked up the dirt underneath it in multiple locations. I love having them for algae control, but they irritate me at the same time with the digging. lol
I love my two male Albino Bristlenose! I have one each of my two aquariums! They also love to eat blanched broccoli!
lol, the water in my area has a ph over 8. My bristlenose are doing great.
mine bred and had like what seem to be a few hundred... i love these.. i sold the babies bac to the fish store for store credit...
Unlike the rest of the plecos the bushy nose (in my country we only call them "Ancistrus") are not growing huge like the common so basically we never get to see the commons in the shops.
Lucky aren't we :D
That’s good. Almost no one has a tank big enough for the regular ones.
Some do grow big, Ancistrus is the genus and contains some larger members, Ancistrus punctatus can grow to 30cm SL which is the same size as the common, Pterygoplichthys pardalis. There are quite a few reports as well of 25cm SL common bristlenoses, Ancistrus aff. cirrhosus.
There is a spelling error in the description. "I lpve these guys!" lol
This video has a lot more depth in it than most do. Had to rewatch it.... Was tired af watching it last night. lol
I bought a second hand tank that the sellers had drained and had been sitting for a few hours. Got it home and acclimated the clown loach that they sold with the tank. Very informative, thank you ✌
I have success breeding bristlenose pleco.. Got a batch mixes of regular and albinos.....
The ancistrus does not gorw lager than 15 cm
Thanks
very much
You are so fucking right i have 2 longfind lemon bristlenose with blue eyes and i love them.
I like your enthusiasm!
Mine is super social. He's always out and about in my tank. His name is Spike.
I have a make super red and he is so cute with his red bristles. He is called Draco
I once had one that stayed in the same place for 3 days when I went to check on why it wasnt moving it was dead lol stiff as a board but it looked alive O-o
Wow, I just stumbled on this video by accident. These fish came from me almost a year ago now. How are they doing for you?
They go for a long long time. I had one for about 10 years.
There are some really beautiful plecos, but my largest tank is the Flex 15 gallon, so I don't have any. I do have a common pleco in the 75 gallon I take care of at work. Very helpful video thanks it helped me a lot!!
+Byron Robertson thanks for watching!
I love them, hoping I Get a tank big enough for them (for my birthday) I Wanna breed these Guys as well
Goofed L183 , starlight bristle nose My fave is A. Claro, LDA08 very dwarf.
TY great video, what kind of snails are those black ones?!
Great video again!
Are you alright? Saw there was a storm.
I only have 1 male left. The female died.
*Keep up the good work and thumbs up!*
Yeah its the rainy season here so it storms a lot.
I recently purchased 4 bristlenose plecos and have them in my 34 gallon hex. +paul p I would like to breed them but I guess I'm to lazy to deal with the offspring. :) I'm not sure how many I could move in town.
I only have 1 pet store that I could do business with within at least 100 miles give or take a few miles. I am planning on taking 2 back to the lfs once I get a pair. I have a male bristlenose plecoto. he has a ton of full size bristles
I currently keep my bristlenose with my betta. The two don't even look at each other so it works out for them.
That is a good pair.
Nice
witch type of wood should i put in my tank for Ancistrus???
I have an Albino Bristle Nose in my community tank.
I had a 600 salt water tank but then I drained it and put a male and female common pleco and one week later they laid a clutch of eggs and two months later I got a nuther clutch
Does yellow lights make you fish tank look cloudy I would like some advice
The video is really good. I'm uploading fish images too!
9:29 after a whole day of reacquainting with relatives
I hear you on the common pleco I got one in my 30 gallon it's not so much a size it's the poop everywhere just ruins the water gonna return him
bighurk30 good thing you returned him lol he was gonna outgrow your tank
I have small carpeting plants called stauryne repens
Hello, I have a 2.5g tank, it has a few cherry shrimp in it and I wanted to get some fish, what fish can I have if I could have any?
I love bristlenose plecos, but I've never seen them in any LS in my city. Don't they uproot small/carpeting plants? btw that pleco 6:20 looks exactly like an oto from bh.
Mine just cleans algae off my plants, he's never pulled them up. Just make sure you have some kind of cave type structure in your tank to keep it from digging up the substrate.
maybe newly planted ones but for the most part no.
My pleco is trying to wipe out whole my tank mates
Can you keep two males/two females together if you don’t want to accidentally breed them? Or would they show aggression?
They will likely fight.
Does it eat algae from plant's leaf ( like- Anubias plant leaf) or just from glass surface or bottom dweller..... please reply.....
If the plants are strong enough to hold them they'll also eat from them. Bristlenoses aren't too picky
@@Exodon2020 thanks for reply...... best wishes from India.....😀
Sean the guy at the store talked me out of getting a tiny Bristle Nose for my 5 gallon, I would love to find a suitable similar fish for Nano tanks. musicalmarion I'm not sean, but you could try otocinclus? I have a 10 gallon planted with 2 otos:)
a small group Otocinclus can be an option?
No I have seen one that was 8 inches I work at a lfs and a lady brought him in he was 8 years old
Let me correct you: The male chases the female and puts her in the cave against her will. o___o
This is what my bristlenose pleco is doing. XD
Are they shrimp and plant safe? only eating hair and green spot algae?
Yeah thin leafed plants like swords may see some damage but for the most part both are safe.
Mine like to remind me not to touch HIS plant. One anubia that if my hand get near it I will get spiked with his gills spikes...
Hey peck, are they safe with shrimp?
Most shrimp people I know have said yes, they are fine with shrimp.
I think mostly yes. They could certainly eat one but I don't see them chasing them around or anything.
HAd a common in a 220 at a shop I worked at that dude had to be 14in easy.
+Nomad whooa that's huge! I've never come across one like that.
+Nomad wait do you mean a common pleco vs a bristle nosed? I've seen lots of huge common plecos.
Whats the name of the snail at 00:13 seconds
+JZD that's a rabbit snail 🐌 I think. Not positive.
There are a couple of typos in the description!
+Channidae gasp! 😱
I sure love fish that are easy to "bread" :D
I lpve bread :D!
L173 white seam that you like, needs soft water. Others, like albinos, are interspecies hybrids and much more tolerant of hard water? They can live for 20 to. 25 years with decent care. One of my vry favorite fish.
+Channidae lol whoops warning these fish make terrific sandwiches.
I'm getting a green dragon
what all things do they eat
Everything just about. They love rasping on wood and it’s been said it helps digestion. But that’s the strangest part of their diet. Some algae some protein and they do good.
wat does pektec come from
When I was 10 I wanted to start a robot factory and thats the name I picked. Latter when the internet became a thing it became my online persona.
Ok cool lol I would have never guessed that
I had two male plecos for about 5 yrs, they lived in a 30-gallon tank happily, it seemed and got to be 14" long. I lost them when my husband tried to do me a favor and clean the tank... he tossed all my bio balls in the dishpan with dish soap.
That what you describe are NOT the odontodes!
What are they then?
Ancistrus is a GENUS, not a species :P
🇩🇰👍
It needs a cave to breed, so if you don't have a cave or something similar they won't breed.
Mine got so big that i had to throw it to the river :(
