I had a screen print and embroidery shop. We had a 6 head 12 color machine for shirts and large items and a 4 head 6 color machine for ball caps. Both were Brother machines. We had to pay a guy from Japan to come train us. It’s pretty awesome you’re covering this!! The world needs this. Makes me miss my business. We had tons of fun. The worst customers were the parents of little kids that were starting to play baseball. Lol.
LOL I've had an embroidery business for over 30 years. And you are absolutely correct! Hockey and baseball parents (usually one of the same) are absolutely without question, the all time worst customers bar none!
This sure beats hefting the machine into the back of an SUV, travelling to a city to get the machine serviced and lugging it back home a couple of weeks later. I have an older Brother PR650, and it falls out of tension if you sneeze next to it. I'm picking up a TOWA as soon as possible. I never knew these existed! Thanks for the information!
Sam- on this machine / how do you have it automatically complete the stitching without completing and restarting the stitching. I noticed if I step away it automatically continues to restitch until stopped
thanks for the very informative video. Just one question on setting tension. I know you have to set tension on bobbin pretty often but what about the thread itself? just curious as I'm thinking about purchasing one.
This was such an awesome thorough video. Thank you so much. I just ordered my towa digital gauge. Got a couple of questions 1. Do you run the thread through the needle eye when you’re measuring the top thread ? 2. How do you know when you need to adjust the bobbin thread when looking at your” I “ tension test? I know adjusting the fine tune knobs will make the middle line in the back larger or smaller but what would show if the bobbin is too tight or loose ? Thanks for your help.
It's roughly finished, but not totally done yet -- hence no video. It's honestly fallen behind on priority compared to launching my new local business and keeping up with other things around our home.
Hey there! Thank you so much for your videos. I was wondering did you get the mighty hoop and hoop master kit labeled TJ360? There are two options when ordering…
Sam, if you set your machine up on top of a piece of padded carpet it really works to quiet it down in your work area. I run mine upstairs that way, and in the room just below it, you can't hear it at all. Ricoma comes with a built in 15 color tension test.
Do you use the same tension for shirts and hats with this machine, or do you set it for each job? My machine is on the way, but I'm trying to get all the insider help I can to be prepared 💥👊🤓
Where did you find what your tension number should be. I bought the digital tension reading like u suggested, but I don’t know that the numbers should be for my machine
I just got an embroidery machine (Janome) and I've been too intimidated to start using it. I'm going to start, to try to learn along with you. Thank you.
The tension test that you run on the machine? I digitized my own to suit my desires. :) There's a link to download it for free in the video description or on my website at samcraft.shop

I love it when you talk smart!
Tfs!✌️💖🙏🕊️🇺🇲🤜
My! How things have changed since I learned to sew! I remember about having to adjust tension. We just did it by feel.
Do you do tension with thread in the needle aswell
The tension on this machine has to be different when working with hats. Can you do a video regarding the tension and how much tighter it needs to be?
Thanks Sam! Your channel is amazing!
Thanks so much!
Did I miss a video? When did the bridge get added?
It's roughed in, but other things are taking precedence at the moment. I'll show that video when it finally gets completed.

Sounds like you have the repeat function enabled somehow. I’m not at my machine to know exactly the term or screen it’s on though.
What kind of thread are you using in your smartstich?
I've been running the default thread, Maderia, & Candle thread in it to see any differences in performance. The jury is still out. :)
That intro was fire and I thank you for that sir! Keep up the GREAT content. 🙌🏻
Thanks! I'll try my best!

You should do personalized Christmas stockings
That is a great idea!
The video is awesome but when I pull the thread, that towa is doing a million numbers. How do you know which is the one you are looking for 😢
So helpful! I was holding my digital gauge incorrectly for the top threads and couldn’t get a consistent reading. Your info was perfect! Thank you!
Wondering what tensions you use to embroider structured Hats?
Are you still doing 150-160 thread tension, I was told by smart stitch that it was 85
Does the embroidery machine have to be on when adjusting the tension?
Hi sam, where do i get that centering arm for hat that i saw on your hat hooping station. Thanks
Which digitizing software did you buy into? I went all in on Embrilliance Stitchartist and wish I'd looked closer at Hatch.
I purchased Hatch 3... well, I'm paying their installment plan for it. :)
Did you put the tunnel in between the two shops?
It's roughly finished, but not totally done yet -- hence no video. It's honestly fallen behind on priority compared to launching my new local business and keeping up with other things around our home.

Can we talk about the mighty Hoops🤔. I'm ordering my machine sometime this week, and these vids help
Go Maggie Frames. Same exact thing and half the price.
I wish you well, I would like to know, please, what is the tension of the polyester thread of the bonbine, also the upper thread?
Where did you go to get the machine to set it
The gauge is a time saver also, At least it keeps you from a lot of guesswork.
Why not run through the pigtail????

Thanks for the tip, and that is really cool that Ricoma's are built in too!
Awesome video. I just got my machine and this is incredibly informative. Thanks man!!
Congrats!! I'm very happy to hear this video was helpful too!

Hi. This video is great. I posted the link on my Facebook group for embroidery!
Love this video. I want you to do more. What tension is best for different materials
best bobbin tension for flats? (shirts polos beanies)
also best bobbin tension for hats?
Where did you find what your tension number should be. I bought the digital tension reading like u suggested, but I don’t know that the numbers should be for my machine
Thread and machine manufacturers will have their recommendations but you also need to test and walk them in.
I just got an embroidery machine (Janome) and I've been too intimidated to start using it. I'm going to start, to try to learn along with you. Thank you.
That said, I have questions. Why would you want prewound bobbins?
Would it be too much toask for a threading pattern, I believe mine were threaded wrong b the company.
The Smartstitch channel has full videos showing that info. :)
What software would you recommend for someone just starting in embroidery and digitizing?
Hands down; Hatch. They’re the top software for users like myself and above, but have great affordability too!
I can’t for the life of me get this to work. Seems that I need to loose and if I do loose. Then the knob will come off!
I have the smart stitch 1501. 😩
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
When setting your top tension, do you have the thread running through the needle as well?
Yes!! Completely as the machine has it.
180 for top
Hi, how do you get your test set up? I deleted my initial training test and I don't know how to redo it.
