I think there are a couple more. First off he comes in out of nowhere (only been playing Tier 3ish CS so far) and absolutely runs over teams and has the best Tier 1 Stats on par with mouse sports ultra carry Niko. Which makes his performance even more incredible given that he isn't playing with a bunch noobs. Shiro Chopper and Magixx are known quantities and yet he still stands above everyone. Also just in general with MR12 I think we saw a nerf across the board to AWPers due to there being way less full gun rounds where your team has an AWP or you have to go up against a opponent with one. It just helps a lot that donk doesn't need to spend at least 6K to play the way he wants to play.
I remember this channel and others taught me not to crouch in CSGO. It was one of the only pieces of advice I didn’t understand about the pros. I had been crouching from previous games (any that give advantage to recoil and confuse opponents) and it was working for me up to global elite levels. It was the one thing I never agreed with the pros about. I just didn’t think people understood the crouching meta or why it’s competitive when done with randomness. I’m glad to see this being shaken up because imo it was always a half baked conclusion to not crouch. -it’s not that simple. There’s deception and mind games at the highest level and I feel like people who concluded not to crouch never considered mind games as the most elite form of competition rather than sheer aim speed.
It’s a bad habit because it messes with your aim. That’s why he never recommend it in his videos because they are meant for beginners. You are right pros crouch all the time. Donk is the one that use crouch in a completely different field though.
The advice given to not crouch is mainly for newer/intermediate players. Crouching can easily screw up your aim and cost you a headshot at the lower levels of play. It's recommended against it because it also makes you an easier target if you're not quickly killing the enemy player because you're a lower level player. In the higher level where surviving for an extra 200 ms because you crouched makes a difference it's good though, as long as you know how to compensate your aim accordingly. Donk also rarely seems to hold crouch while spraying, instead seeming to use his crouch key as a counter-strafe to stop his momentum really quickly, then uncrouching while shooting.
I don't think the general consensus was don't crouch. It's that beginners shouldn't crouch because in low ELO play most players aim chest height instead of always having good pre-aim for the head. So, if you crouch in low-mid ELO play you're most likely crouching into a headshot and getting yourself killed faster. Against good players that often pre-aim head height, crouching can throw them off.
Absolutely insane that if you do the math, Donk has played (on average) 2.25 hours of CS every single day since he was born. He has arguably spent more time playing CS than he has spent eating or going to the bathroom.

I"d assume a large part of his success so far comes from his playstyle being very counter to what people are used to. Counterstrike at high level typically plays in a predictable way, there's strats, positions, you play a certain way and playing outside those rules doesn't usually end well. But if you've got the talent and a good team behind you, having that unique playstyle throws people off because there isn't a clear and practiced answer to it. If someone does a "normal" play or strat, there's a typical and practiced response to it. But if you're playing in a way that defies those conventions and have the skill to back it up, other players can't rely purely on practiced manouevers and have to answer to you on the fly, which seems to be Dock's biggest strength.
when i was a kid i played a lot of servers on 1.6 and source where the servers' admin hated camping so much you would receive damage if you stoped moving for more than like 3-5 seconds, so even a simple hold required you to keep moving like you're on speed just to not take trigger the anti-camp slap.
I definitely agree - high energy and the expectation and preparedness that the enemy could be anywhere makes a huge difference. You have to go into every space on a map expecting to see an enemy. That allows you to be fully alert and prepared when an enemy does show up. And not just keeping the pace but also knowing when to not overreact from pressure is also important and comes with a lot of time and experience.
That's how I used to play CoD, constantly rotating on the move while going from cover to cover or position to position, checking every possible line of sight at all times. This is also how to play RTS games, always keep the APM high so you are ready to do a lot of micro instantly, it removes the ramp up time.
Donk to me, a now mostly non-counterstrike player, seems like someone who has mastered full focus. You can tell that he just almost never leaves focus and I bet if we i were to see his camera footage that that is exactly what it looks like. He is fully in tune with the game, and on top of that is also just mechanically trained enough to control himself however he pleases. Thank you for reading, but i have to admit i might have hit a donk before writing :) Also hi brent if you see this, you're like one of the only cs tubers i still watch because you keep it fun for someone even if they haven't played in a few years Edit: your name was Brent, right? did I forget? I mean Mr.TheWarOwl himself here of course 😅
He's good but his impatience is going to be easy to exploit when someone with equal aim is on the other team. The bold peeking is a recipe for getting shutdown on longer angles and once teams adapt, he'll have to change a lot about his playstyle. But based on how good he is with a rifle... I doubt it will be a big leap for him.
That's the thing. The playstyles of other players are well and truly tested and, even if known about, continue to work. I think it's far too early to say if donk will actually stand the test of time once players adapt to how he plays and knows what to expect.
If you think donk is impatient then you aren't watching him. An impatient person doesn't jump peak bathrooms from sign for half a round only to press forward when a smoke lands. Donk has a reaction time that is somewhere around 150ms on average. He doesn't let him self "sit still" imo because he knows when he does he is less focused and therefore less responsive and less accurate. It takes a lot of energy to play the way Donk does. Especially while remaining in tune with his team and remaining so damn accurate.
with the insane peeker's advantage in cs2, I think everyone will follow him instead. I was thinking why the meta wasn't changing to exploit the ridiculous peeker's advantage yet, and lo and behold!
He's good, but other players will learn to adapt to his playstyle and exploit it, as teams did with s1mple. Good IGLS will for sure plan this. They will pre-nade his positions, smoke him out and make his life more miserable. But I'm watching this with a keen eye, it's for sure interesting.
8:10 Best example of having a goal vs enjoying the journey. I also found myself when I forget what I do something for get into flow state and just get things done, play well in a game, instead of having the goal in mind.
I really enjoy your esport coverage. I dont' follow the CS esport scene regularly but these videos are always a well thought out and understandable wrap up of some current trends.
peekers advantage isnt JUST about ping. Human reactions are ~200ms when you peek first, you know when the engagement is coming, when you wait and let them peek you, you have to rely on your reaction time.
Actively avoiding getting headshot is not unique to Valorant, but the movement punishment for spamming crouch in CS has made it a suboptimal strategy in the past. For whatever reason, it seems to be a more viable option in CS2 and donk uses it very effectively. Peek, crouch to get off of head level, uncrouch to avoid the enemy's adjustment to crouching head level, and keep the spray going while doing both motions. Donk also has an absolutely insane ability to get a kill within the first 5-7 bullets VERY consistently, which means that as long as he can avoid getting headshot for a full second, he usually wins the duel.
I hope is refreshing playstyle keeps working once the other players know it better. A few years ago there was young wrestler (Enho Yuya) in the highest division of sumo wrestling in Japan. He was a head shorter and half the weight of all other sumo wrestlers in his division, but he managed to get to a quite high rank, because his technique was very good and he used is agility to his advantage. But after a few turnaments, the other wrestlers figured out how to counter his strategy (1. not going in agressive, so that he can not use your own momentum against yourself, and 2. try to grab him and just lift or push him out) he dropped out of the first division rather quickly.
Could you please point out the damn cheating problem? Valve obviously only listens to you and 3Click, some other known names have tried to call out Valve without success, and Valve stay silent.. Obviously Valve listens to only you WarOwl and 3clickPhilip, since often when you, specially 3klikphillip points out map errors etc, its corrected in the next patch. Therefore, you guys are a shortcut to get Valve to pull out their slow a$$ fingers. But both of you are 100% silent around these issues...! And only comes up with small none important things. Once you pointed out for the better for the community, now you just talk about pretty much nothing. This lack of a propper anti-cheat is killing our game. and even the Major open qualification was infected by teams using cheats. Sparkles pointed this out as well as other, but those Valves listens to, WarOwl and 3Klick, they stayed silent, not a tweet, not one word.. Valve MUST come up with a proper solution ASAP or give up and hire a team that can. The game need proper anti-cheat and proper HARDWARE BAN. The major also need to stop allowing private hardware like mouse and keyboard where cheat easily can be installed on, and Valves garbage anti-cheat do not even check the hardware for so-called input-hacks Its the same regarding: 1. High pingers peek advantage. 2. The lack of maps. cs1.6 had 18-20 maps, and cs2 have SEVEN.... Its getting boring. 3. The garbage sub-tick system 4. Ranking system that is infiltrated by cheaters. This is all killing our game, it is killing the prices of the skins. This is NOT good for the community! Stop keep being silent about the problems..
when i watch him he just seems incredibly present for every round which allows him to play his position with certainty. For 99% of his gunfights he KNOWS they are there, thats why he crouches, he fully commits to the gun fight. Also when you play aggressively you quickly learn what the limits are to how fast you or an enemy can be, so you become very certain about where enemies on. You play your position aggressively, limit test, then build off of that information. He also doesnt pussy out of positions a lot, he fights for the map control and plays the position well instead of backing off for retake and giving the enemy more to work with. Fighting for every single angle of the map is exhausting for his enemy im sure. Its a lot like kiting in league as adc, yeah backup and stay alive but KEEP AUTOING, same concept you have to kite and keep threatening the strafe peek
You just gotta love the Counter-Strike Community (and online gaming culture in general). I saw people play slightly more flexible that the rigid structures ya boomer had for years, and they get yelled at over and over again on voice. Buy the scoped rifles -> get yelled at, Vavle has to force their use by making them cheaper just so that people accept them as viable, now they went back to og and are still used. not just hold angles the established way -> you would get so cursed out in games if that goes wrong, even if it goes well 4 of 5 times. Now that a pro does it, it's tactical. I also think that if people were less judgey, more varied tactics and skills would emerge, but if 99,9% of people who think outside the box get bullied out of the game, you get a stale meta, and Counter-Strike is the master of stale meta. That's how you all like it. :D
his playstyle is insane. I play very similarly especially in 1.6 but he's got the mechanics absolutely nailed. I love watching him play The crouching thing is definitely carried from his time playing 1.6 as well when he was like 7 lmao.
Finally someone that gets it if you practice the fatigue gets to you before you even get to start playing and your instincts get dull. Even if the aim might not be on the spot from the beginning of the match its worth it in the end. Just like school tries to teach you something but its always better practicing the real thing learning how to spray with bots its not the same as learning how to spray in different situations in matches with some more importance than deathmatch so that there is some pressure.
Honestly, while I am a CS player, I have followed few high level Valorant aimers (some of them have even played pro) and surprisingly common factor with them and donk is that they don't train, like at all. They just queue up ranked and play the game. And I have found this enigma interesting, as often for both CS and Val, people are giving advice on how they should aim train and watch pro povs all day long, while some players become one of the best by simply focusing on ranked. And that's both interesting and cool.
Even when not playing with high ping, playing like that keeps you focused and alert. It can be really easy to zone out if you hold an angle super still. Finally, of course he's making himself harder to hit if someone wide swings him and he isn't ready
When you say "he's only 17", this is actually a plus for him. Younger minds are more in the zone and less to worry about in general. Adult life is less prone to eGames greatness in my humble opinion. :)))
I agree with his "practice" technique. I myself only queue up MM and have been playing since the release of csgo. The best way to practice is to not aim, but to play against a player who is playing to win. I feel like the psychology is the most difficult thing to master over mastering mechanics.

Thank you for reading, but i have to admit i might have hit a donk before writing :) Also hi brent if you see this, you're like one of the only cs tubers i still watch because you keep it fun for someone even if they haven't played in a few years
Edit: your name was Brent, right? did I forget? I mean Mr.TheWarOwl himself here of course 😅
3:56 Donk is now officially the mascot for the next Speed movie
Nice, just like those old ‘50s-‘70s cars.

Hey WarOwl, on your Map Tier list you forgot Tuscan, any chance of getting to know where it would score?
probably between A and B tier
@@TheWarOwl Thanks man! Appreciate the answer! I adore that map somewhat.
"He's like the bus from speed" .... WOW what a reference!
Im edging to this
Me too bro

1:31 gooood this crosshair placement

Thanks for this video!
What about a donk mod video, where players have to move constantly 3:33 😊 ?

wysi
Go to the frame when his crosshair stops moving and zoom in if needed. You'll see the crosshair isn't actually on ropz's head.
Brother you're fighting ghosts
8:10 Best example of having a goal vs enjoying the journey. I also found myself when I forget what I do something for get into flow state and just get things done, play well in a game, instead of having the goal in mind.

I really enjoy your esport coverage. I dont' follow the CS esport scene regularly but these videos are always a well thought out and understandable wrap up of some current trends.
What song is it from 1:32 - 3:19? I've been looking for years at this point.
Good song. Darude - Sandstorm
Same
Might be Mario Kart DS - Bowser’s Castle? Hard to tell though because it’s so quiet
Training CS with high ping is like Goku training with weighted clothes.
I love videos like this, you talking on a topic to do with Pro CS and giving analysis on said topic. (I actually watched it twice)
When do we get the official Warowl OperaGX mod pack?
peekers advantage isnt JUST about ping. Human reactions are ~200ms when you peek first, you know when the engagement is coming, when you wait and let them peek you, you have to rely on your reaction time.
His crouch mechanic awfully looks like the Valorant one, crouch spaming to make yourself harder to hit with a reduced spray pattern

More singing please. Maybe some violin too? That'd be great
Fantastic as always Warowl. Man I wish you'd do more of those pro analysis videos. Out of all your content, I enjoy these the most
Could you please point out the damn cheating problem? The major also need to stop allowing private hardware like mouse and keyboard where cheat easily can be installed on, and Valves garbage anti-cheat do not even check the hardware for so-called input-hacks
Its the same regarding:
1. High pingers peek advantage.
2. The lack of maps. cs1.6 had 18-20 maps, and cs2 have SEVEN.... Its getting boring.
3. The garbage sub-tick system
4. Ranking system that is infiltrated by cheaters.
This is all killing our game, it is killing the prices of the skins.
This is NOT good for the community!
Stop keep being silent about the problems..
Dude that lil War Owl plush in the back, I need me one of those.
CS is the Russian game.
neighbors genocide is all times ruzzian game
With this upload schedule, I'm starting to think WarOwl finally did find closure.
when i watch him he just seems incredibly present for every round which allows him to play his position with certainty.
This is actually similar to testing the opponents *patience* in rainbow six siege
Never thought someone would do that in counter strike
I'm excited to watch Donk at the major soon
Donk is training of course. Nobody sprays a full AK magazine without training, the situation is extremely rare in the mm. Thanks for the video!
im sold on operagx just off the strength of that ad introduction
His Playstyle reminds me off high ELO "Shift W" Hunt Players, respect to play like this in CS very cool.
Ok, that might have been the best sponsor intro I've ever seen
Beyond fascinating to see how the environment effected his play style for the better, I rlly hope he goes far
He’s actually so good! Impressive young guy! Already made a huge impact this year alone 👏🏻
I think a video on crouching could be interesting especially right now with donk's crazy movement being discussed
his playstyle is insane. I play very similarly especially in 1.6 but he's got the mechanics absolutely nailed. I love watching him play
The crouching thing is definitely carried from his time playing 1.6 as well when he was like 7 lmao.
The overdramatic guitar solo in the background is a strong choice
I’ve watched so many videos about cheaters in esports lately that I kept waiting for you to drop the bomb about this guy lmao
Those kills through smoke on Nuke are absolutely nuts... If I saw my enemies do that on replay, 100% I would SCREAM they're walling
Donk's crazy playstyle + Sh1ro as back up makes Spirit so hard to break.
ok this sponsor ad you had here was fricking funny, good one man! hahahha
"If you avoid the stress of training, you'll never get good" as always, Warowl video, full of cs and real life knowledge/wisdom. 🕊️🐱
That not stopping to move part would be a good thing for a Counter-Strike but if you stop moving for more than 1 second you get damage.
Wait, hold on, where did the Army WarOwl panel go?
Getting a handshake from Donk after the Faze vs Spirits final is my luckiest encounter
Great video, I always enjoy this esports analysis content :D
Even when not playing with high ping, playing like that keeps you focused and alert.
It can be really easy to zone out if you hold an angle super still.
Finally, of course he's making himself harder to hit if someone wide swings him and he isn't ready
the shut up at the begginig killed me. lollll
always loving the starcraft music
When you say "he's only 17", this is actually a plus for him. Younger minds are more in the zone and less to worry about in general. Adult life is less prone to eGames greatness in my humble opinion. :)))
I'm an Opera GX User for 3 or 4 years now and for real I love it.
I agree with his "practice" technique. I myself only queue up MM and have been playing since the release of csgo. The best way to practice is to not aim, but to play against a player who is playing to win. I feel like the psychology is the most difficult thing to master over mastering mechanics.
The instrumentals from "Scorpions - Wind of Change" were a nice touch ;) I volunteer (as a native Russian) to offer you some Russian music beyond "Kalinka" and "Katyusha" next time you want to make a video about a Russian/CIS player
I could relate a lot of this to learning guitar. I always asked myself what was my end goal with guitar, if it was to become a malmsteen or a petruci or something. However, i know that in order to become someone like that, u have to be, like u said, young and obsessed, two things that i am not. Its a realization that I must come to, eventually.
