    RE: pregnancy, and "fat"
For anyone who may have asked if I was pregnant in the past: please do not feel badly if you did. I am not offended, but I do think we all need the reminder that this is not a question one should just ask someone they're not intimately acquainted with. Consider, some may be struggling with fertility, some may have just lost a wanted pregnancy, some may not want a pregnancy, some may have detrimental body issues and that sort of comment can send them spiraling and hating themselves even more, some might be trying to keep it a surprise or secret, some might have other health issues that are personal and not anyone else's business. There are a plethora of reasons why we should keep these curiosities to ourselves, and personally while I work very hard to keep neutral about my body, it is a question that stings still. Asking someone (especially someone who isn't a close friend) if they are pregnant is VERY personal and not anyone's business.
And, for anyone feeling like they need to defend me against calling myself fat: fat is a very, very neutral term. I am not insulting myself, and in fact I encourage you to consider WHY you feel the need to replace (neutral) ""fat" with words like "voluptuous/curvy/fluffy" and also go further into saying I'm beautiful or pretty or have a great shape, etc. While I absoulutely understand if you PERSONALLY would never call yourself fat or want to be called fat, I do think we need to work on removing the negative connotations of the word by making it simply neutral. I am: beautiful, creative, capable, strong, talented, curvy, yes. All positive things!
I am also: green-eyed, brown-haired, a little on the taller side, and fat - all neutral things! Just the same as I'd say my husband is medium-height, blue-eyed, and thin. Yet nobody rushes to say he's not "thin" he's "lean" or "he's not thin, he's handsome!"
You get to decide what power your words have, and using fat as a neutral term helps to negate the ways people try to make it an insult

Kristina, I am 73. I wasted a large portion of my life doing what I was supposed to. I wasn't happy with a perfect house, my shape wasn't picture perfect, Always trying to be the perfect wife, mother, friend. I was never satisfied. In 2011 I was diagnosed with chronic Lymphoma leukemia. I learned the only person I have to make happy is myself. If the house is messy so what, if someone doesn't like it they can clean it. I enjoy my life and know my time here is limited, I accept my flaws, I stopped being perfect and just accept I am just human. God will not judge me on my house, or my looks, but how I treat others. I love your show and your attitude. You are the kind of person who would be a great neighbor. I hope you finish your book, I look forward to reading it.

I think there is a difference between being a homemaker and a housekeeper. Homemakers have the places everyone wants to spend time in where they know they are loved and cared for. Housekeepers have the places that are picture perfect but everyone is afraid to sit on the furniture. You are a great homemaker. Don't let it get you down .

I agree with you when my children were growing up ( I had three children), our house tended to be messy all of the time but everyone wanted to be there. I loved cooking and baking and there was always good smells of food cooking and cake and cookies to snack on. Even my Avon lady said to me one day, “ you’re home always smells so good. I was puzzled at first and then she added “ it always smells like something good cooking “. I still treasure that little compliment. Ours was a home everyone wanted to be at.😊

Hi Kristina, I’m 74 had four children and little money, nothing much has changed except we now have five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren! My home has never been magazine ready. When the children were small, the youngest is 50 now, my neighbour who had a magazine ready home was drinking tea in my house and commented that although I had a yellow kitchen table, my home always felt cosy and comfortable. My father always said he could come to us and feel at home but at my sisters he felt on edge all the time.
I still have that yellow Formica table, bought in the sixties by my parents!

I remember us, the homemakers of my community watching the “liberated” working women coming home, like superheroes, and there was a certain shaming on us, like we were an “underclass”. So, there you have a different kind of shaming. Now, when I look back at those days I understand, those were the best years of my life. Do your own thing, no matter what they say.

I was happy to see your children helping by taking their baskets of belongings out of the living room and putting them away...It reminded me of my childhood. Five kids and we all had our Saturday morning chores, depending on our age and abilities. The first chore I remember doing was at 5, I was in charge of dusting all the bookshelves. Each evening I was in charge of setting the silverware for dinner. The older kids were in charge of the plates and glasses. Everyone was responsible for rinsing and stacking their own dishes after dinner to make washing them easier. Everybody was expected to pitch in, in some way.

I am 68 years old so I don't have small children anymore and it is just my husband and myself so I don't have any excuse for a messy house but because I have always thought of myself as having ADHD, sometimes it is. I have found many of your tips to be quite helpful to me. At my older age, I find that breaking down projects, such as cleaning one shelf, one drawer and one window at a time keeps my home in much better shape than if I try to do a whole room at a time. I am finally learning that decluttering is essential. Getting rid of stuff I know we won't use/wear/read ever again is hard but feels great once it's gone!!
The paper tsunami in our house is continually ridiculous, but we're getting a grip on it. I have most bills and statements set to paperless, but we still get tons of paper. The rest of the clutter doesn't bug me nearly as much. And timing how long it takes me to do certain tasks helps a lot with that feeling of dread that I often get when I see the pile of clean laundry that needs to be folded or hung and put away.

  • @nicoleachilles8765

You may consider yourself as not being a good housekeeper, but you are a realistic homemaker. I love your videos because you show the struggle, which in turn allows me to accept my own struggle with wanting a tidy home so as not to be mentally overwhelmed by clutter while battling the 'wall of all tasks' or alternatively the 'attention span of a teabag'. I love your videos because you show the dust and dirt when sweeping the kitchen, showing that it is normal that rooms that get used have dirt tracked in, so I need not despair when I hear the telltale sound of dust and sand under the houseslippers even though I swept that area just ten minutes earlier. I might have just taken the trash out, moved something that has been left undisturbed for too long or simply come back in from an area I am then cleaning, but with the floor there yet unswept. I love that you show a home where people really live and not just occupy space. With you cleaning the dining area means cereal crumbs and early morning toys and not just the one coffee-mug stain because the hubby forgot the coaster even though wife-dearest reminds him all the time. I love your videos because you show that making a space a home is by caring about the space, even if it is just a quick tidy-up session, as opposed to items that either need to be chucked out or brought into our lives, depending on the philosophy. That the art of making home is to not give up on the idea when things pile up and you get a late start or don't have the energy for all tasks or when a routine that worked well for a few weeks suddenly messes with your brain and you can't seem to find it in you to even attempt it. I love that you try all those different things to find what works for you - and you are right: tasks which the first time took ten minutes and two dustrags to clean, eventually barely take a minute. So, thank you for sharing all that with us. With love, Nicole.

Hi friend! So, over on Jamie Chaotic's channel, she did a fun decluttering vlogmas project where she made a list of all the different areas of her home she wanted to declutter, organize, and clean. She cut the list up and put each task in a fishbowl, drawing one area per day of vlogmas. She had a goal to get her home under control in order to host a holiday party, and it worked! She did one or two tasks per day. She broke it up into a closet, or a shelf, or a cupboard, or a corner. She was totally successful and watching her tackle these small tasks throughout her home was really eye opening to me. It's so easy to feel overwhelmed with the overwhelm. Breaking down our tasks by minutes, areas, or sections can really help our brains stay on task and become accomplished and successfull, slowly, but surely!

Kristina, I beg to differ. You are a good housekeeper. I see you creating a routine that works for you, a management plan that works for you and your family. That is what homemaking is all about. It may not be my way, or your mother's way, or your grandmother's way, but it is the way you meet your family's needs, and your own. Add your own creative time into your schedule. Make it part of your routine. It is just as important as sweeping the floor. If you don't take care of yourself, your family will suffer. My mother had 9 children and had a general routine which she followed. It got the necessary things done so that other events could be enjoyed. The schedule was flexible to allow for accidents and emergencies. It sounds as if your routine is also flexible. Keep it that way. You are doing great!

I’ve struggled with a hormonal imbalance since my son was born thirty two years ago, and have been shamed and heavily criticised for being fat for decades. I finally cut those folks out of my life. The only advice I give anyone, no matter their shape or size, is know your stats. BP, blood sugar levels, cholesterol and if you’re on medication, annual liver/kidney status. Body shape can be deceiving. All my stats are normal, and my GP remarked that I have the kidney and liver function of a woman half my age (I’m 61). My tall, thin, vegan partner, has the cholesterol problem. Knowing your stats is crucial to management and longevity. I love the sweep it into a pile method! Wished I’d thought of that when I was a young mother. Also, I loved how you threw the ball for your kitty! Adorable.

With extreme darkness and then extreme light kids playing out till midnight, not mine but others. I kept up the yard and the house and was 21 with 3 kids. Still married to that man and my 3 kids have small kids. I am blessed to have them all within walking distance. I spent so much time trying to impress my friends and realities that I missed so much. We always hear it but believe it, you are in a season of life that flies by enjoy those kids.❤ You will have many seasons in your life with grown kids and a quiet house. Fortunately for my kids I am now retired and can help with their kids so they can have 24 hrs to clean have some fun & regroup. Be good to yourself, don't compare yourself to others, daily gratitude helps me alot during these long dark winters to have food a roof over my head, kids and grandkids to keep me so busy 🙂 in a time that so many don't have the basics. I needed this today, and every day. I always catch myself saying I’m a bad wife and a bad mother because sometimes I just simply don’t have the time, energy or desire to clean at all. It’s important to note that I too am neurodivergent and clinically depressed with PTSD so most days I feel like I’m just surviving. But the idea that “mess is neutral” is something I will definitely hold onto on days where I feel negative about myself and my role as a home maker, wife and mother.

One of the best things you can do is teach your children( even some spouses) to pick up after themselves at an early age. Also, show them how to clean and/organize.
My late husband was a hoarder and it was a constant battle to keep order in our home since we both worked full-time.
I was an Artist and loved beauty and color. I loved cooking and making delicious meals for my family and decorating a beautiful table too, which my daughter took over at some point because she enjoyed it too!❤ My life was never perfect, but I'm glad for all the good memories and both my children have done well for themselves!🎉

And for this "perfect" thing: I am not here for that. I don't need anyone to tell me how a perfect life is supposed to be. I need someone who shows me how to deal (or accept) with reality, up and downs, low energy days and things like that. This inspiring. And helpful. ❤

I am taking a week vacation from work so I can deep dive. Your 50’s housewife series has been a BIG influence & I plan on doing that for the full week and try to implement that routine into my every day routine once I’m working again. I work 8-5 at a desk in my home.

Hi Kristina, I hate cleaning especially the daily reset. I finally found a vintage large cart with two shelves 30 x 15 with wheels. I can wheel it in a room and pile random misplaced items on and sort it quickly and wheel it to another room. Also I learned this from
my great Aunt. Keep soapy dishwater in a small tub in the sink at all times so dishes can be quickly washed throughout the day. It’s tough not having a dishwasher. You have lovely home. ❤️

You have been a great inspiration for me to keep going as a mom of 5 myself, and I get asked if I’m pregnant, too and just laugh it off, knowing they meant nothing by it (and honestly I’ve had surprises and back to back pregnancies, so it’s often been a possibility.) thank you again and I love all of your cute aprons!😍

So often we assign shame or merit to traits that have neither, so I really appreciated your gentle reminder that our physical attributes are mostly just neutral facts. I know people would be much happier if they embraced their 'flaws' and focused instead on being happy, healthy, and content. Bless you.

    Find Flylady.
In your room: Make your bed, vacuum the floor and wipe down the bathroom. In the kitchen: clean the flat surfaces, do the dishes and sweep the floor every day.
Livingroom: pick up before bed so it's clean the next morning.

Shine your sink doesn't work for a brushed steel sink. After a year of trying to shine my sink, I know what they mean but I just can't shine a brushed sink. Ditto rooms I didn't have, sections I didn't have, utensils I didn't have, furniture I didn't have etc etc. I realized every section of their site, back when they first started online, was doing nothing but make me feel like a complete and utter failure. I can do that to myself. And frequently do.

I'm encouraged to keep my cabin on the Sturgeon River clean by watching you. I'm not a clutter-bug, clutter drives me.. .. well, it sorta' "ticks me off." I always love your videos, but i loved this one even more. I can't always take proper care of my home, and seeing your's, that I found so pretty being messy, with crumbs on the flour and simply unperfect was what i needed.
My grand ma use to say the house was lived in, and that's exactly what you are showing us. We see you cleaning for real, not wiping an already clean counter.
Your very human house, with it's blanket fort, it's dirty dishes and stickers everywhere was what I needed. It reminded myself to not expect perfection from myself, but simply a place were i can live comfortably with the ones i love. So thank you for being honest with us, it's helping so many of us
I love the stickers. It makes me think about the little fingers who put them there. It shows your priorities about your home and your family ☺️ also, it's a fun game to track them down in every video !

Thank you dear Kristina for your authenticity and your graciousness with your response which should never have been needed. I recently discovered your channel and thoroughly enjoy the content here and look forward to your posts each week. I'm not the greatest when it comes to keeping house and I understand the bit of shame that is carried some times. I felt it was more important to be in the moment with my family and friends rather than having a completely tidy house. It took me many years to learn to not run around the house trying to make it perfect before my parents stopped by and in turn, they have learned that our home is one filled with love and a bit on the cluttered side 🙂.

You are a good housekeeper Kristina as you notice what's out of order. That's first step. When we live in smaller spaces with lots of family the house will always be out of perfect order. It's lived in and in your case the live in your home is very evident.
