Planetside 2 will always have a special place in my heart despite the games faults. I remember seeing the trailer for the first time when I was in middle school. Being absolutely inthralled by the sheer chaotic intensity of the whole thing. In fact it was just after Highschool that I was able to play it proper as I was able to save up enough money to get my own PC. Now here I am well over 6 years after highschool and seeing this game making its last steps of its journey. Its even the only game I've played where I clocked in over 2000+ (majority of it playing by myself).
Sadly the problems with the game became too much for me and eventually I stopped playing, it was just before Wrel made the announcement for his departure. I want to come back to this game, but where it stands I just can't do it. If the gameplay isn't fun anymore to play why even play it when other games do it better.
The fact the game was and continues to be able to last this long is a testament to its dedicated (and stubborn) player base.
I hope to see the game have a resurgence like a Phoenix out of the ashes or hell an announcement for Planetside 3, but I cant expect it to ever happen.
Shout out to all PS2 players out there, both old and new. ✌️

Planetside 2 has a big issues deep inside of the gameplay core. Big battles is great to participate, but the chance of occurring this randomly is less than 1%, other time it's small/medium fights that most of the cases is a pain to play. For infantry gameplay the dynamic is so broken. Usually the best what game can offer to you it's a choke point fight with grenade spam and standing in one place for 2 hours.
Battlebit for example has a more classic formula, when game session have a timer with start/end. The number of players in teams is always equal, squad spawn system helps you to get to the action fast. And there is a lot of action always thanks to great maps and overall game balance. The infantry gunfights is a key element of the match and the game itself. But in PS2 feels like its a by-product of doing objectives which is sooo boring for most of people. Yep, 90% of people goes here to shoot something, not doing that platoon military simulator thing.
Optimisation is bad, after so many years of work it feels like nothing was done 👍.

I find that the really awesome moments in Planetside aren't frequent enough, especially for new players. They spend too much time looking for a fight where they aren't being farmed, dying to "cheesy" things before they get a chance to get there, etc. It feels like the juice isn't worth the squeeze.
I stopped playing the game but I will always love it. Despite it's niggles, there is nothing else like it. Given the direction of modern FPS, I don't think we'll get anything like it for a while, either.

yeah, i just played planetside 2 (10/october/2023) as vanu, and it felt like i was getting shit stomped by terran constantly, then i swapped to my terran, and felt like i was getting destroyed, the game is basically just a corpse grinder to get capture points with nothing else. the progression is extremely slow, certs being gained 6-10 at a time (needing 100ish to buy attatchments etc) or pay money, and the sad thing is, its actually a pay to win game with how much advantage you can generate with a suped up vehicle

  • @Challenger160
    @Challenger160 Год назад +77

The most fun i had in planetside 2 was with active outfits which actually talked and co-ordinated attacks on parts of the map to cut off enemy locations and enemy outfits responding in force by galaxy dropping players or sudden population influx from their spawn but as the game gets older and outfits and teams became quieter and only really active for alerts, the liveliness of the game has tapered off. Sad to see but if there's a big update which new and old players could work towards, it could re-ignite the game. I still love the game but this is sad to see.

the only way they could recover at this point would be to remove micro transactions from the class progression improve the progression style, and then make an actually like LFG thing basically, as a newer player my only way to get into an outfit or fight is to sorta bum around and use prox chat (which is dog shit) to find a fight, and when i finally find a fight im a lone soldier surronded by vehicles getting constantly farmed lmao. and even if you google/youtube an outfit to join, tons of them are super elitist and demand you drop money on the game or they wont let you join

The main issue with PS2 is that it's become harder and harder to maintain those epic, set piece battles that the game sells itself on. I'm not talking about the dwindling population either, as that is a symptom, not the cause The primary reason for this, in my opinion, is outfit orbital strikes. Before those, orbital strikes were an infrequent and fairly predictable occurrence. They were tied to construction buildings, and everyone could see the radius in which one could happen. There was a spectacle to them because of the preparation required and in the relative rarity in which they occurred.
Nowadays, any jackass can just click on the map wherever they want and severely disrupt a fight. Attackers managed to get on the point? Orbital strike. Defenders managed to reclaim the point? Orbital strike. Armor column moving toward your base? Orbital strike. Coordinated group setting up in a key position to try and stop your zerg? Orbital strike. Someone killed you with a weapon you don't like? Orbital strike. It's become all but impossible to maintain a large, back-and-forth battle without a dozen people right-clicking the map and ending it.
Between orbital strike spam and the increasing ease of spamming force multipliers, the game has boiled down to shorter and more one-sided battles that just feel like everyone is taking turns dumping their resources onto bases and then moving on. The "FPS" part of MMOFPS has been increasingly sidelined for cheesy gimmicks and battle ending bullshit that makes the game more and more frustrating to actually play. Which is a damn shame, because when PS2 was firing on all cylinders it was a truly unequaled experience in the industry. No other FPS has ever made me feel like a grunt in an actual sci-fi war like PS2 could. And now I fear such an experience will never happen again.

The game lost its charm under wrel because he disliked certain players that made it thier business to show him he isn't as good at the game as he likes to think. People were complaining about hard it was to find good pitched battles for over 5 years before orbital strikes were put into the game. The dwindling population was definitely the cause more than the symptom, orbital strikes were just the nails in the coffin.

lol that is one salty OS review, first of all, as a regular OS user (atleast twice a week) I can say that most OS users don't know how and when to use, secondly, fewer capture points are outdoors than they are indoors (excepting Oshur which is also where you'll see more strikes) and as you know, unless you're a MAX, you're safe indoors against an OS, thirdly do you know it isn't easy to craft orbital strikes at all? I mean unless you are one of the biggest outfits on a server, the resources required to craft an OS are difficult to come by and that too take time to craft and at any point, no matter the size of the outfit, you can only own 2 Orbital strikes and even with enough resources, each OS takes 15 mins to craft in which time proper fights die. I am the leader of a small outfit on Cobalt and most of the time, the map shows captured by ' insert faction huge group' so there are no resources to gain from there or if you want the green more common resource, you gotta have the whole faction attacking the base and somehow come out as the dominant outfit or atleast in the top 20 scorers on the map to even be blessed with the green resource, fourthly even IF you were a huge faction, you can't just hand out OS rights to every Tom, Dick and Harry in the outfit, if you've been in a big outfit, you'll discover that OS privilege is given out to selected officers, namely regular squad/platoon leaders, otherwise any noob can waste the resources.
Sure, I've seen Orbital Strikes ruin SOME perfect fights (the definition of which changes by perspective) but they are too far few in between to matter on the scale you are talking of. How are you any different from the ones bitching about "Max suits are OP" which is what the pet peeve of everyone was before OS was even invented?

    • @GWRaynor
      @GWRaynor 11 месяцев назад +5

@@ПлатонУченик Y'know, I was going to argue, but you did say you play on Cobalt, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. This seems to be a case of "your mileage may vary" based on server culture.
I have the misfortune of having to play on Emerald if I want good ping, and that server has become a shitshow of every force multiplier in existence being spammed to high hell every hour of the day. You can't even go to a 12-24 fight without seeing an OS the moment someone flips the point. Outdoors fights in between bases? Literally not allowed anymore. Alert just started? Prepare for an hour of every fight being 70/30 pop. And so on. The higher population and huge outfits actually hurt the server's gameplay at this point. It's just hellzergs running in circles all day.
Don't play on Emerald. There's a reason most of the game's "salty vets" are from there.

For me its the lack of casual players. When I go to a fight, I get one shotted by the veterans who tryhard the game. Then the spawning simulator begins. No one wants to play spawning simulator. Back when the fights had like 120 players each side it was epic and I enjoyed the mayhem because it gave me some room to sneak behind enemies and actually get some kills. I am not so good at a face to face combat, and the tryhards are killing it for me.

PS2 at its prime was incredible. Our outfit ran four platoons (outfit only players) and I would run another recruiting platoon that was open for anyone to join. There was a big sense of comradery that I haven't experienced in any other FPS.
We would sometimes make kill teams consisting of smaller groups to back stab enemies or fight larger forces. This was possible as the map progression wasn't linear and wasn't just two blobs fighting senselessly. When the last map (don't remember the name) finally got it's rework and received lattice lines is when the outfit started to fall apart slightly. Sure it was better for the newbie to find action straight away but in my eyes the game lost its charm and turned into a grind fest where you were just a number farming kills. Such a shame to see this game die.

  • @jackrabbit1704

The biggest issues for me were imbalanced faction equipment, veteran player advantages, ping-favorable gunfights, sweaty players(which almost feel like they have aim assist), far too slow of cert gain system, lackluster change in weapon purchases, one-sided faction overpops, and clear sniper/lmg aimbots. Overall even though I have great gunfight win averages on other FPS games, on this one, I can begin shooting first and will still consistently lose gunfights I really shouldn't. There's something deeply wrong with the net code of this game, and it doesn't feel as smooth as an experience because of it.

    • @julianfarnam6246
      @julianfarnam6246 2 месяца назад

The ping thing is what killed my interest in it. If I'm going to loose every fight because I'm already dead before my opponent even starts shooting on my end then what's the point of playing? Infiltrator was fun, but it was literally the only way for me to get kills because if my opponent got to return fire I was dead instantly.
That and battle-eye having permanent un-restricted access to every file program and account on my pc. Tbh that was probably the bigger issue.

PS2 did a lot of good things, and frankly the reason why it lasted this long is because there's nothing like it out there to really challenge its niche. Lasting 10 years is worthy of respect, but the writing's on the wall my man, the game has been ever so slowly going down in players for years, it was only a matter of time until it died. And with how silent the dev team has been as of late, and with how the population has been going down, it looks rather grim, you can't deny that. Last year in september there was 1583 active players according to steam charts. This september there was 990 left.

Oh there isn't a skill gap and never was. Websites like Aimjunkies, Hagsclub and a few others - had dedicated sections of their forums for Planetside 2. The stupid thing was that if you enrolled (two of my outfit did, one to expose the other was a cheater sadly) ; you found some were brazen enough (dumb enough lol?) to use names similar to those they used in the game as forum handles.
After years of 'get gud' hypocrisy (I still maintained a K/D of 2+ but it was a drag as time moved on) I'd run into people who notably had superhuman awareness compared to players of my ability. Whilst originally falling prey to the idea they were simply that good - I then spotted some of their names on that list of people (he took screenshots) of those same cheat site forums. I started to pay more attention. HA's with motion sensor awareness - and yet they didn't have any down. Perfect accuracy on high recoil weapons at range and whilst moving in erratic fashion (not actually possible, I tried it to death with a friend on several occasions). What they said was 'lag' and 'latency' we couldn't reproduce even with a few others. Until someone suggested it was a lagswitch component of a private hack. Lo and behold we used a improvised lag switch and finally replicated their behaviour almost exactly.
Because as you've said - the community dwindled. Ponder this instead. How do you keep a high KD when as per the websites people were actually hacking in 'top outfits'. Surely you'd get pissed off and quit as a legit player in time. Of course. They got the 'skill package' themselves. A little less recoil here, a little help with radar there. For every stupid cheater that takes it too far - you had a smarter one who used it more carefully.
People will cheat in everything. You know that much is true. What many under estimated - was how common it is. You even get people cheating in PvE content in MMO's like FFXIV (for casuals). So go figure what this game was really like. It was a cheaters paradise. And thats really why it failed. Although yes Wrel is a retard and that didn't help.

The most enjoyable moments of Planetside 2 for me are playing in an organized platoon on outfit nights. But when you play on your own, you have very little control to turn the tide of a battle. That's pretty frustrating. But that is the nature of the game. I want this game to last forever, but I don't know what RPG is doing to try to keep it alive.

I’ve found that ANVILing down a Sundy in the right place, building good bases, and organizing a good squad or platoon out of randoms can win whole alerts, with patience. Very few strategic players are on at lower pop times- which means if you play strategically then, you can make a big splash!

I'd argue many of Planetside's frustating element stem from the core of it all:
The ambition to be this big, unending sandbox where war is waged perpetually. Same as with a lot of battle royales, when a game is made for "Le Big Fights", it will struggle when the numbers aren't pulled in. And this aspiration sacrifices a lot of the nitty gritty, and the game is devolved to this core tactic that "Make enemy not play game to win".
And because it's a sandbox, nothing is really supervised. You can roll into a base with infantry farming tanks, or dump a 100 MAXes into a fight. Granted, it can look epic, but it's a taaaaad bit damaging for the experience those who want to play the game a bit more competitively.
And then there are problems since the first devteam, lead by Higby, are present, and the, supposed, fact that the people working on the game didn't document everything well enough.
And even then, there's a community side problem, where we have people who would go as far as to ruin the game for others, on purpose, claiming "Le Devs ruined it for me :ccccc", which, all in all, might be the cherry on top for it all.
As to whether it's dying: Of course. It's a 10 year old niche title, that's being, for all we know, put into a maintenance mode. It would be insane copium to say that it isn't, or that it's a huge success, or whatever.
But, at the same time, the game had a rather respectable run, and it was one of the few FPS games that i truly enjoyed.

Bro wrel specifically nerfed the nc max because of how potent I was in that thing. I joined this game because I like combined arms and came from mech warrior/mech assualt background. So I play the unit that resembles a mech. How am I not "competitive" playing as a max ? If anything I'm shooting myself in the foot by not using the max especially with hackers. I think unit designs like the max can negate aim botters in heavy or light assualt and it makes them cry to not be undefeatable so they rage about how "uncompetitive" the max unit is despite it being extremely unique to the planetside franchise. And I didn't use the nc max to farm I used to to accomplish in game directives like capturing hard to hold bases or defend against overwhelming odds of Vanu zerging

@@kahlernygard809 Ah I see not having the @ made me think it was in response to the OP. From my experience the whole aim botter thing is about as over inflated as the max hate so try to use that as a point of reference to empathize and pivot your thinking about it, you're basically stoking the fires of the same type of bs thing that is annoying to you. Most of the people that you were actually getting riled were probably just infantry purists that put in too much time on pure aim skill and somewhere along the line forgot that there's more to planetmans than ivi, and a max doing it's job well is a really jarring wake up call to pull them back into reality so it's prime for tilting and salt. Those were the real people that got mad.
Also the pop limit on pulling maxes would have never stopped a true max crash as those get pulled from warp or other hexes and just in general doesn't work with how planetside is. AMRs aren't inherently an issue either (to me they weren't even a threat 90% of the time tbh). The issue is that past like 2016 no one who had any balance say actually understood the intricacies of balancing maxes and the role they're supposed to play as it is very clear just with everything they did related to maxes but really shown extraordinarily well by how they handled maxes and OSes when making them no longer be res-able after I stopped playing this last time due to outfit drama.

I think the first step to making it a lot more engaging and social is to force an auto-kick from outfits. Players that did not log-in in over a month are automatically kicked out (leaders included - with a new one elected automatically considering their activity and current rank in the outfit). That would immediately get rid of all the 1k-4k player outfits that have barely 10 people online at any given time and overshadow smaller and way more active outfits when you search the outfit browser. It should be very easy to apply and would have a very big impact IMO.

Been playing since launch, couldn’t agree more on the impending doom of the game. It had so much potential and the hayday was some of the most fun ive had in a game. I think PS2 was screwed from the start with the death of SOE and a weak dev switch to daybreak, lost access to the amount of dev focus required to nurture the game and possibly create a sequel as most games were advancing into a new generation of graphics and mechanics. The format of PS2, a MMO FPS and its setting made the recipe for a timeless masterpiece, but with its first developer company vanishing completely in its early stages and the following neglect due to lack of resources, it fell to pieces over the years. Ill always hold it as one of my favorite games and remember the wild fun moments of chaos ive been able to participate in on connery. Hopefully it gets revitalized through a sequel and a dev change but I wont hold my breath for that. Great video Cami, will miss hunting you down on Connery brodie.

My biggest gripe with this game is the imbalanced zergs that kills any form of fights because the opposing factions are simply overwhelmed that it quickly becomes spawn camping base after base after base.. And when they pushed the edge of territory to the warpgate there's a small window of large scale fights before turning into another zerg fest this time from one of the other faction. Rinse & Repeat.
Secondly the vehicle gameplay that was never balanced. Someone can simply play inside a tank or liberator for the entirety of their gameplay especially with membership boost. Although they are not completely broken they are an issue since literally everyone can just live inside a vehicle and it makes zergs much harder to fight because not only are you out numbered player wise, the enemy zerg has armor that just overwhelms any effort of counter play. Battlefield has fixed this issue by limiting the armor/vehicles in the game. Getting access to force multiplier shouldn't be for everyone. We can balance who's allowed to access vehicles but that's not even a problem because everyone can spawn basically anything they want..

The forgelight engine is the only existing engine that can "handle" PlanetSide player counts. They would have to make a new engine, which is prohibitively expensive. This is the main reason I'm sure there will never be a sequel.

    • @TheGameWatcher98
      @TheGameWatcher98 Год назад +4

Forgelight has achieved the player count in a live product, yes, but Planetside 2 scale can probably be done in UE, but you will need some really good engineers to pull it off.
      Replication:
The forgelight engine still throttle the amount of player characters that are replicated on your screen. You'll know what it looks like if you ever been to Nason tunnels during peak hours.
300+ players are simplified to about 100~ on minimap, and probably 80~ on the screen.
The server of the engine did a decent enough job to narrow down the things that are relevant to each client for replication purposes, and the same can probably be achievable in other engines too, like unreal engine. But no matter what engine or method, replication at this scale is a nightmare for anyone to figure it out (Look at Starcitizen, still working on their network. And yes, I know the context is a little different.).
      Character asset/Animation:
The performance cost of Planetside's character animations are on the lower end, as all gameplay animations are reused to keep that side of the cost as low as possible. For example, the base animation of the healing syringe is the same as the C4's.
Game meshes also are on the lower end of the tri count compared to the more modern games.
You will notice, everything was about keeping the individual kernel that makes the bag of rice that is planetside as small as possible, so the final bag of rice that is the game isn't going to blow your computer up.
But at the end of the day, should the game get a sequel? I hope it does, but it'll take the right context and people to pull it off.

I posted a document outlining what we could get if there was a serious effort for a sequel or better yet outright reboot. I had put it on Reddit and Official Forums.
However as many have stated something of even just a 1 to 1 engine move would be a monumental task amd I doubt RPG has a piblisher that would do that.

because currently noone enjoys the CTF bulls%%t, the Esamir rework with its awful Containment Sites, Oshur,
the new spawn system which as you said makes the gameplay loop feel so slow.
combine all of that with the reduced 700 players per map and its pretty conclusive, the game isn't dying, it was murdered.

TF2 has not died from lack of updates or insane cheating problem. TF2 exists. Planetside 2 is likely going to exist far into future. Smaller, naturally. And the world ended on 2012 and on 2000.
Veterans and self-titled pros say "But it is so fun", while in real world we ALWAYS know that "It's not about winning and losing it's about how you play the game". In Planetside 2 winning is cosmetic.
4:00 Waiting outside of combat is the most relaxing part and the most addictive part for me. I loathe instant respawn servers. I want my calm, it makes me not go crazy.
In Planetside 2 we fight because I drove a sunderer there and I'm threatening to capture your base. If we wanted peace in Auraxis, we could actually have it. In a normal shooter, you are automatically matched to a random place with no real sense why you are there. In Planetside 2 I'm taking what is yours, and try to prevent you from doing it. It is a true player driven narrative. It usually works, while not being perfect.
5:13 I don't understand this one. Vehicles then have clear "Attack and Defend the spawn"-role.
You can enjoy the game just by driving around. I see roles for vehicles. Cert sink, encouraging teamwork -- oh, having awesome time with my friends.
7:29 Automatic Anti-infantry turrets and pain spires denied your access to a construction base. Player made bases now have buildings that you can safely spawn from. Since the changes I saw massive spike in finding myself in construction bases, building one or two buildings from the capture point silo. And then... actually having enemies try to fight me there -- that has not happened since the Victory point construction things.
And after this video release, outfit wars got pushed in. But now I see that both possible actions from Day Break Games (DBG) got attacked. Weird, and I'm afraid we are not making sense.
There might be a difference between Aussie server and Miller. But I'm not convinced.
To not only be critical and refuting points, my positive stand is following:
Populous 3: the beginning multiplayer lives with possibly only 10 players, Age of Empires: Online was revived with 100 players. Are these games dead and not worth your time? Nope. Alive, but extremely small. Both have somewhat active PvP even. My definition is that Planetside 2 is dead, when it is officially offline, and nobody plays on private servers.
There are enough monetization options even with extremely tiny population. Free to play -model targets whales. DBG said that Planetside 2 made them the most money out of their games. This was few years ago. We were already small back then. We got Prime partnership, and mission changes to promote membership. There is desire to get more money where the population shrinks. I don't see this as dying, but trying to survive. Money is the only thing that matters whether it dies or lives.
As long as there is cool stuff added, some of us will buy it. And when someone buys something, they likely want to play with that thing. I see this being somewhat nasty cycle, but still a cycle for people to keep playing. And the game still is free, so I think there is a small but never ending flow of newbies in. Those who can tolerate the cyber bullying, which some call skill, will stay and want to keep playing. That is not that many, but not zero. Is fixing bug abuse and therefore upsetting veterans so they leave a good thing? I'd wager some money on yes, if it could be measured reliably.
Silent majority can easily be opposed to the vocal minority which we are. League of Legends changed ping system. Reddit and other creators complained and argued and argued. In truth, dev told that in-game polling showed majorly higher satisfaction in pings and less toxic behaviour through pings after that change.
Planetside 2 is still the very only game that is like it. The only one now, and likely the last one in the history of mankind. If John Smedley leaves Amazon without creating another Planetside-style game, we will not have powerful leaders in the industry that believe in this type of a game or leaders who are willing to risk trying to copy a mediocre success of Planetside 2. I do not see in 3 years time, or even in 5 years time a reasonable change in computing or networking which is going to make creating Planetside 2 type of a game significantly easier or cheaper. Smedley, Higby and Wrel, they did turn a profit with Planetside. They are unique and successful. I believe their actions have enough momentum to carry Planetside for next 3 years. I also believe that there are no people in places with large directive power or bravery to face the market to create Planetside-style game to even compete with Planetside 2.
I state: Planetside 2 is not going to die during the time frame of exactly next 3 years.
The conclusion of the video sounds like a burnout. And I do not want you to break yourself on Planetside 2. Cami, I'm attacking the arguments, ideas, not you. I would not want to even suggest to force you back to Planetside 2. Keep yourself healthy. Ranting, being wrong, and showing passion are the reason why we are on RUclips. I'm possibly wrong, but I would like to not to be.
I would like to invite people to play Planetside 2 on Miller(EU). You might see me raging in /yell for failing to understand the players in zergs, or you might get shot by one of my two assault rifles that I'm currently grinding. Hopefully not taking a whole day, like yesterday. I'm bit of an addict. But would you believe, that I'm having fun on Planetside on Miller? Shocking.

The biggest problem for me to return was the technical issues. While played on release and it looked OK and played well - at 2020 with newer and more powerful hardware it werent enough already and iv got some especially nasty type of input lagging. Shortly - input slowed down (movements, etc) and then got executed as a one quick batch of actions. Second issue were Implants - almost musthave thing that you must grind to get (iv stopped playing a bit before they were introduced). Some separate issue, also related to "getting into to combat", a huge gap of skill between new players and veteran players - noone likes to be a frag for too long, some bots may fix the thing there.

Battlebit Remastered has Frontlines and while that gets close, it's easy to get steamrolled by four dudes on quad bikes getting behind the farm to backcap the shit out of everyone. While Planetside had the same problem, the capture timer gave people time to react. Not so in Battlebit.
Also with regards to killing the game off faster: sometimes the best way to reduce the suffering is to rip the bandaid off altogether.

"Other FPS that are more worth your time" - See, that's the problem. There is NO FPS anything like this.
See I tried Battlebit - relevant since that's where your attention went. Gave it a shot and really tried to enjoy it. Hoped to get back some sort of combined-arms large-scale tactical shooter feeling...
To me, it is Roblox Battlefield. And no this is not a jab at its style, I quite love it. But its very very... VERY arcade-y. There is no defined frontline at any given point, and barring maybe two maps people always chaotically run around from point to point hoping not to get shot in the back by a squad of players who materialized from one person sneakily getting behind the lines with the "spawn on squadmate" option... It is utter chaos, the class identity and balance is fundamentally a mess (and given the pace developers implement changes, it is clear they either don't care, or can't figure out what to do with the situation). The tempo of the game just doesn't support any sort of tacticality.
Is it a good game? Sure if you are into that. It is a great game with potential, for the given audience. But I am looking for a game that is deeper than a puddle. Something that is not some lobbyshooter with flavoring. Planetside is that deper game concept, that thing that has depth. The waters are murky, maybe even a bit rancid, but the concept is right. It just has a LOT of issues sadly. Too bad they never listened to actual well-made ideas like Vindicore's Planetside Upgrade Project...
    ---
A lot of metagame elements would need to be changed in the game in order to revive this. At this point I'd say it is time for Planetside 3. But there is no ambition, and no resource for that. Not from this company...

I remember asking about games with a similar feel to Planetside 2, and the best answer one person could give me was Foxhole; a third-person, zoomed out, isometric game.
I eventually got into Deep Rock Galactic (Rock and stone!) and while it's been fun I still find myself missing the raw intensity of Planetside 2's combat and the truly massively multiplayer experience that it offered. There was something special about being in a pitched battle and knowing that every moving soldier or vehicle was an actual player.
I've been seeing some people playing Helldivers 2, but when the action is at its peak I'm continually reminded that there are only four actual players at a time.

All new content is just another gimmick that makes playing the game more difficult and less frequent. Explosion spam. Stalkers. Maxes, mines. Bad base design. New base design seemingly not improving on the core problems that make fights bad and disappear quickly. It's like 2 hours bad gameplay for 5 minutes of fun gameplay. Bit different for vehicles but as infantry you are limited to fights actually happening in bases. But even with vehicles you have that push and pull between the bases less frequently.

Man, I don't know, I think there will always be enough players logging in to keep it somewhat alive, it's a matter of if they keep the Servers up and the Logistics behind that, that's really the deciding factor.
That said, if it does come to an end I will be quite sad. I know I don't play much anymore but from time to time I still get back into it.
The original Planetside many years ago left a imprint on me and Planetside 2 while it had issues I have enjoyed for many hours myself. There's something about fighting a un-ending futuristic war where you can pretty much do anything you want when it comes to FPS Combat. Wanna play a Infantry and slug it out in the Trenches go for it, wanna drive a tank go boom boom with your buddies, wanna fly around and harass people from above Planetside got you, wanna base build you can do that too, shoot you can even hop in your Mech Suit and Dakka Dakka people into oblivion.
I think as others said there just probably aren't enough intense moments anymore for new players, there is a lot more down time then there used to be when looking for a fight. I think a big part of the problem for Planetside 2 is the FPS Genre is way over saturated with games so there is so many options for people, and most never even find out about Planetside 2 at this stage in it's life cycle. That means if were ever to really enjoy Planetside again, if it truly does finally end, it would have to be many many years from now on a Planetside 3 and that's if it ever comes to be.

I have about 10 years and 10,000 hours in the game. One consistent thing I've noticed in all that time is the players LOVE the massive stalemate fights. Focusing on the lore and spreading out the battles into smaller fights is not what drives most players to stay in the game for hours on end. It's the 96+ vs 96+ battles that pop up in specific locations around the maps that players respond to. We get a little dopamine kick for every kill in the game, and the most consistent and frequent way that happens are in those huge battles. A good example of this was Subterranean Nanite. I knew we were heading towards this decline in the game when the devs took out that base.

I think Planetside 2 has had really poor leadership for... all of its life.
Most of the time the updates have been confused and focussed on areas that didn't need work (construction, twice). Like no one at the helm understood what the game is about or what it needs to become better. We had a few updates that made things better, but those were genuinely rare.
I, too, think it's end of the line for the game at this point. With wrel gone, more confused updates, and other games doing better to scratch that large battle itch (battlebit, for one), there's not much reason to go back to PS2.

Oh, it was still going? I tried it like a decade ago back when it was under the SOE subscription, and man it was tough to get into. So much grinding for tiny upgrades, while all the good stuff is tens of hours away at least. All the problems you spoke of are what drove me away in the first place - it's a tough sell honestly. It's nice on paper, but my experience was you either get blocked fighting over one particular area with no side ever winning, or one side just steamrolls every other side across the entire map. Battles for areas could be over in minutes or have no progress for hours. Do you stay in the grind area where everyone is and try to get kills, or try to take some territory by yourself and get swatted by a group that comes over to prevent you taking it? I guess it's the nature of MMO's, but it never felt like I was contributing anything to battles myself.

I think that battlebit shows that people crave a game with large scale battles. It's just that Planetside has some core issues that other games in the genre don't. So people slowly flock away to those games with time.
Honestly almost everything that makes Planetside 2 a unique game, also make it incredibly hard to balance and to update. 3 factions make it harder to balance gameflow. A gigantic continent make it harder to balance choke points and places where people can spawn or hide. There's so many people on the screen that every anti-vehicle weapon feels like a tennis ball launcher because otherwise it would be too strong and it would completely melt everything. AMRs feel like pea shooters while reavers can just one shot people on the ground.
Not to mention how people can't really decide if infiltrators are incredibly strong or incredibly weak. And every other problem regarding classes and their balance...
it looks like the foundation of the game isn't solid enough to support so many mechanics at the scale the game has. Planetside would need a better foundation or to lower the scale of the maps and fights.

The formula for planetside 2 is good as is cause it makes team play the core focus of the game, you do need people to set up spawns defend said spawns while you have another group going for objectives. This makes the game more complicated and interesting than your average COD yearly realest that haven’t played since black ops 2 and will never play again. The pacing of the game is fine since you can literally press one button and get thrown in the middle of the fire fight anywhere in the map. People are not playing it anymore probably because they don’t want the old graphics and went looking for something more modern.
