It took me about 15 listens before I could listen to it without weeping. It hits this old man in the feels. IMO it includes the wonder of nature, our place in the vast universe, a yearning for the holy other, i.e deity and our shadow selves. All this is backed up by the delightful animation. It's Yoyoka in her signature cardigan and it is the perfect complement to the song. I don't know if you will record a review but please give your self a treat and give this about 3 or 4 listens. I think she has magic ears. You cannot play like this unless you can hear and deeply understand the essence of the music and the subtle intricacies of the original masterful performances. She's shown this since she first appeared. So many musicians lack this ability. An amazing musician.

The feel is crazy for a drummer of any age. I have listened to many drummers try to replicate the Purdie shuffle and it never feels quite right. Impressive!
Great choice. Lovely reaction. This is my current favourite Yoyoka cover. It is exquisite. A cross between the Large Hadron Collider combining unimaginable energy and sensitivity, and a Patek Philippe watch movement. I was thrilled Yoyoka finally tackled Steely Dan. It is super easy to understand what we're hearing. Over 100,000,000 babies were born in 2009. Yoyoka is their designated drummer. After that truly soaks in, everything makes sense. Even at 7yo, she had great groove and feel. Plus she radiates 'contemplative joy' (there is probably a word for this, I apologise for my ignorance). Her left hand is amazing, adding subtle notes to guide the listener into the groove. Her right hand is ... ridiculous. Another favourite is _Cream - Sunshine Of Your Love._ Ginger Baker created the great 'Tom rhythm', but Yoyoka adds bounce and joy; much more appropriate for a song called "Sunshine Of Your Love". IMO instrumentals are a good place to start because they remove the distraction of reading the lyric translations before 'getting' Band-Maid. They were founded by the rhythm guitarist who was into Japanese "Maid" cosplay and culture. Do not be fooled by their stage costumes. They are the sh!t 🤘

I might have mentioned this before, but what she demonstrated at the end, and in a few other spots within the song, is what her fans refer to as "The YOYOKA Effect". This effect will normally make her version better than the original. No disrespect meant to any of the greats, but she is already one of them. Music evolves, and she just takes things next level on a regular basis and is, with others, the future of music. BTW. Many of her covers done in her home studio, she will be wearing socks. I've loved steely Dan since I was a kid in the 80s. Never had the musical knowledge to understand why it's just so good! Thank you for highlighting this detail. I've been enjoying your The Warning reactions. They remind me of that musical era.
My favorite track of hers. I'd personally hire her to play it at my wake. I've seen Purdie's clinic on this, watch the work on the tight high-hat. She misses a crash cymbal once in this, it's the only thing I can find in this, and it really doesn't affect the sound. Note the restraint on the fills. Purdie wants to minimize and get out of the way because Steely Dan wants to ensure the various horns etc. do what they need to do (and it's a *lot*). This is actually hard to play well and be "right on". Also the Bonhamesque improv at the end, always like that. I've watched this 20+ times. Self-taught, and can't really read charts yet...just like Bonham.
I think we are about the same age, I'm probably older and I can tell you that this was one of the first albums I ever purchased when it was released. And I can also say, I wore it out! As far as I am concerned, she nailed it like i was listening to the album. Incredible talent for sure.... mezmerizing to watch and enjoy.

Yoyoka makes whatever she plays look so effortless, so casual, and yet with so much feeling. And she never makes a big flashy deal about it, very humble, respectful, and yet joyfully executed. To me she's the SRV of drumming, the David Beckham, the Derek Jeter of percussion. Yoyoka also shows off without being a flashy show-off, even with her little improvised riffs at the end of some of her videos, that come off looking like she's just having fun vs. just trying to look cool. Maybe I'm wrong, but her demeanor suggests anything but conceit.

We knew by age nine when she was turning out 70's music like crazy, leaving us in awe, that this was to come. Just a few years earlier than anyone expected. Love to see her do more Steely Dan and cement herself as truly one of the all time greats. Even at this still young age.... (13)

I know Emilio. At the time Yoyoka had ran into a brick wall as she was considered the Queen of Quarter Notes and Senri Kawaguchi was, still is considered the Princess of Many Strokes. She was really getting frustrated when it came to playing different time signatures as she did not understand different time signatures or how to go in and out of them. She depended on her click to get her through and, in this respect she is really a star of modern drumming. She really understands how to drive a beat, as in her, I believe she explained it in her drum lesson #16. However, she did not understand how to violate the sancity of coming off the click and phasing into a different time signature. There is no such thing as variable clicks. When you transition out of say quarter notes and into something else, you have to do it by feel or subjective timing to get into the different time signature. You can still count once you are into the new time signature, but if you are basing your driving the initial beat of the song by the click, there is no transition from the click into the different time signature. She could play quarter notes and depending on the bpm, eight notes are really quarter notes played quicker, same with sixteenth notes, depending on how they are counted. Emilo corrected her with regard to her timing when she first played Rosanna as she did not understand triplets on the sticks as she did when on the kick. She was good on her kick with tripplets. When she played Rosanna in the beginning, she was just playing straight sixteen notes instead of triplets on the hat and not getting the lope of the shuffle. Yeah, he taught her Engish as well, then covid came along and the stupid Japanese governement threw him out of the country and he went back to Chicago. It was a shame the way he was treated as he had his own band there, girlfriend, and allegedly, 'the right to live there and work there'. He starting to get into musical notation with her, but that went by the wayside. By the time Emilio was allowed back into Japan, Yoyoka was very close to making plans to come to the US. In terms of drum rudiments, Emilio helped her clean a couple things up. Nothing she wouldn't have figured out sooner or later. If you look at her drumming progression, there was a major shift in her drumming between when she was six and seven, she had honed her drum skillset to the foundation she plays on today. She had already cut two albums before Emilio came into her life. She had put out a cover of Onyx which was a signature tune from Senri Kawaguchi. This went viral in Japan. Couple months later, she turned eight and put out the HLAG entry which went viral on an international level. This was what launched her internet sensation. This all happened before Emilio arrived on the scene. She learned a lot more English from Emilio than she did about drumming. When she came to the US, she got into jazz. We know that she had a taste of jazz when the did her first TGC where she played a drum solo and then Sing, Sing, Sing. She hooked up with Ken Okada, jazz group local to CA. This is good for her, but as she is getting into jazz, she has yet to come to grip with her grip on the sticks. If you notice she goes between traditional and match with her left hand. On the other hand, pardon the pun, Senri Kawaguchi did have a drum teacher. He was one of the best jazz drummers in the world, Kozo Suganuma. At one time, Senri was into rock and metal, but migrated into jazz and fusion. Senri is the best female drummer and the world. Talent wise, because of her ability to play in virtually any time signature and most any style, she is more skilled than probably 98% of male drummers. Right before covid hit, Yoyoka did a concert with Kozo Suganuma in Tokyo in January of 2020. If you look at how Senri plays, even though she is tiny, she has very powerful and energetic strokes. She plays the drums in a very similar manner to Jeff Porcaro. Where I am going with this is Yoyoka is changing her stick grip with her left hand on certain paterns. A lot of jazz drummers will play with a traditional grip. If you watch Senri play or videos of the late Jeff Porcaro play, they always play with a match grip. You could consider Kozo's daughter, Satoko, one of the best female drummers in the world. She is a fantastic drummer, but no one really knows about her. If you have watched Senri play, Satoko plays the drums like Senri does. If you saw them together, it would be easy to mistake one for the other. Not that it means anything, but Yoyoka can still have finesse with her drum strokes playing with a match grip style. It isn't a right way or a wrong way, just the way you get comfortable with your sticks. It is obvious someone told Yoyoka to go into a traditional grip when she plays jazz. But watch her play, she is in and on her grip. I have a friend who is one of the best drummers in the world who can play in any time signature, including jazz and I have never seen him transation between a tradtional grip and a match grip. If you have ever listened to or watched Judas Priest, I am referring to Scott Travis. Point is, you can play the time signatures of jazz with a match grip the same way you can using a traditional grip. But all this is good stuff for Yoyoka. Make no mistake, when I say Senri Kawaguchi is the best female drummer in the world, this is not to take anything away from Yoyoka. Yoyoka is the best female, under 21 drummer on the planet. When you get to the level Senri and Yoyoka are at, they are both on the top 500 drummer list, so it is just a matter of semantics and playing styles once you get to their level. The Purdie Shuffle has been used by so many drummers. Bonham used it on Fool In The Rain, Porcaro used it on Rosanna and Copeland used it on Walking On The Moon. It was also used by Purdie on Babylon Sister. Japan has an incredible music scene! Yoyoka is a prodigy but Senri Kawaguchi and Fumiya are on another level too! Their jazz, progressive jazz and metal are littered with 8 string guitars, 6 string bass, and next level percussionists!
I am not going to criticize her in the least because she is a phenomenon but when posting these videos I would like to see ether playing along with the song and then without then song. We are still hearing Purdue’s very subtle hihat work that I think she is missing. Yes it is an extremely teeny critique but I would be curious none the less to hear if she is really grasping the essence of those little nuances. Having said that however she is quite astounding
She's just another amazing example of God's existence and His gifts of talent to humanity; not only to Yoyoka, but to the rest of us who are in awe of this talent that she possesses.
I admire Yoyoka's abilities and feel. Unfortunately, Steely Dan puts me to sleep. Please forgive me if I have offended hundreds of subscribers. I foresee a day when Yoyoka becomes the next Bernard Purdie, Vinnie Colaiuta, Jeff Porcaro, Greg Bissonnette, Jonathan Moffatt or Chad Smith - to be hired for session work to elevate songs to the top level. Along the way, top-level performers will invite her to tour with them as a band member.
I came across a couple of songs from 'Maynard Ferguson - Live from San Francisco' many years ago. It's a big band (not sure if you're into that type of music)... but it's outrageous! Why do I mention it here? Because it's Greg Bissonnette on drums and his brother on bass. Check out 'Fireshaker' and '21st Street Shuffle'. I promise you won't be disappointed :)

Bernard, love's to take credit for other drummers work., which is sort of annoying. Mainly because the guy has so many verified classic music that he has played on, it's unnecessary for someone with his accomplishments. He will probably come out and say that it was him playing for Yoyoka.

I've loved steely Dan since I was a kid in the 80s. Never had the musical knowledge to understand why it's just so good! Thank you for highlighting this detail. I've been enjoying your The Warning reactions. They remind me of that musical era.
My favorite track of hers. I'd personally hire her to play it at my wake. I've seen Purdie's clinic on this, watch the work on the tight high-hat. She misses a crash cymbal once in this, it's the only thing I can find in this, and it really doesn't affect the sound. Note the restraint on the fills. Purdie wants to minimize and get out of the way because Steely Dan wants to ensure the various horns etc. do what they need to do (and it's a *lot*). This is actually hard to play well and be "right on". Also the Bonhamesque improv at the end, always like that. I've watched this 20+ times. Self-taught, and can't really read charts yet...just like Bonham.
I think we are about the same age, I'm probably older and I can tell you that this was one of the first albums I ever purchased when it was released. And I can also say, I wore it out! As far as I am concerned, she nailed it like i was listening to the album. Incredible talent for sure.... mezmerizing to watch and enjoy.

I love this young lady too. As the other one said in the comment, she nailed Steve Gadd's piece "50 ways to leave your lover", which is great. My favourite is the Dazed and Confused cover. Her dynamics, accuracy and the tone she creates are all remarkable. Thanks for sharing.
Yoyoka makes whatever she plays look so effortless, so casual, and yet with so much feeling. And she never makes a big flashy deal about it, very humble, respectful, and yet joyfully executed. To me she's the SRV of drumming, the David Beckham, the Derek Jeter of percussion. Yoyoka also shows off without being a flashy show-off, even with her little improvised riffs at the end of some of her videos, that come off looking like she's just having fun vs. just trying to look cool. Maybe I'm wrong, but her demeanor suggests anything but conceit.
I have used the Purdie Shuffle for years. Between touring session work and producing I would say she is a BEAST!!!!!!!

If you haven't yet, you should check out her cover of "Rosana" (Toto). She nails the Porcaro shuffle. I had never even realized how crazy that is until seeing a video of Jeff Porcaro himself breaking it down.
It is safe to say that metronomes are calibrated to Yoyoka.

Just as remarkable, in interviews her parents said she only had 30 minutes/day practice because they wanted her to have a normal childhood. However, I've never understood if playing live gigs gave her a reason for more time on the kit, or she was sill restricted to 30 minutes/day for gig rehearsals.

I know Emilio. At the time Yoyoka had ran into a brick wall as she was considered the Queen of Quarter Notes and Senri Kawaguchi was, still is considered the Princess of Many Strokes.
She was really getting frustrated when it came to playing different time signatures as she did not understand different time signatures or how to go in and out of them. She depended on her click to get her through and, in this respect she is really a star of modern drumming. She really understands how to drive a beat, as in her, I believe she explained it in her drum lesson #16.
However, she did not understand how to violate the sancity of coming off the click and phasing into a different time signature. There is no such thing as variable clicks. When you transition out of say quarter notes and into something else, you have to do it by feel or subjective timing to get into the different time signature. You can still count once you are into the new time signature, but if you are basing your driving the initial beat of the song by the click, there is no transition from the click into the different time signature. She could play quarter notes and depending on the bpm, eight notes are really quarter notes played quicker, same with sixteenth notes, depending on how they are counted.
Emilo corrected her with regard to her timing when she first played Rosanna as she did not understand triplets on the sticks as she did when on the kick. She was good on her kick with tripplets.
When she played Rosanna in the beginning, she was just playing straight sixteen notes instead of triplets on the hat and not getting the lope of the shuffle.
Yeah, he taught her Engish as well, then covid came along and the stupid Japanese governement threw him out of the country and he went back to Chicago.
It was a shame the way he was treated as he had his own band there, girlfriend, and allegedly, 'the right to live there and work there'.
He starting to get into musical notation with her, but that went by the wayside.
By the time Emilio was allowed back into Japan, Yoyoka was very close to making plans to come to the US.
In terms of drum rudiments, Emilio helped her clean a couple things up. Nothing she wouldn't have figured out sooner or later.
If you look at her drumming progression, there was a major shift in her drumming between when she was six and seven, she had honed her drum skillset to the foundation she plays on today.
She had already cut two albums before Emilio came into her life. She had put out a cover of Onyx which was a signature tune from Senri Kawaguchi. This went viral in Japan. Couple months later, she turned eight and put out the HLAG entry which went viral on an international level. This was what launched her internet sensation.
This all happened before Emilio arrived on the scene.
She learned a lot more English from Emilio than she did about drumming.
When she came to the US, she got into jazz.
We know that she had a taste of jazz when the did her first TGC where she played a drum solo and then Sing, Sing, Sing.
She hooked up with Ken Okada, jazz group local to CA. This is good for her, but as she is getting into jazz, she has yet to come to grip with her grip on the sticks. If you notice she goes between traditional and match with her left hand.
On the other hand, pardon the pun, Senri Kawaguchi did have a drum teacher. He was one of the best jazz drummers in the world, Kozo Suganuma. At one time, Senri was into rock and metal, but migrated into jazz and fusion.
Senri is the best female drummer and the world. Talent wise, because of her ability to play in virtually any time signature and most any style, she is more skilled than probably 98% of male drummers.
Right before covid hit, Yoyoka did a concert with Kozo Suganuma in Tokyo in January of 2020.
If you look at how Senri plays, even though she is tiny, she has very powerful and energetic strokes. She plays the drums in a very similar manner to Jeff Porcaro.
Where I am going with this is Yoyoka is changing her stick grip with her left hand on certain paterns. A lot of jazz drummers will play with a traditional grip.
If you watch Senri play or videos of the late Jeff Porcaro play, they always play with a match grip.
You could consider Kozo's daughter, Satoko, one of the best female drummers in the world. She is a fantastic drummer, but no one really knows about her. If you have watched Senri play, Satoko plays the drums like Senri does. If you saw them together, it would be easy to mistake one for the other.
Not that it means anything, but Yoyoka can still have finesse with her drum strokes playing with a match grip style. It isn't a right way or a wrong way, just the way you get comfortable with your sticks. It is obvious someone told Yoyoka to go into a traditional grip when she plays jazz. But watch her play, she is in and on her grip.
I have a friend who is one of the best drummers in the world who can play in any time signature, including jazz and I have never seen him transation between a tradtional grip and a match grip. If you have ever listened to or watched Judas Priest, I am referring to Scott Travis.
Point is, you can play the time signatures of jazz with a match grip the same way you can using a traditional grip.
But all this is good stuff for Yoyoka.
Make no mistake, when I say Senri Kawaguchi is the best female drummer in the world, this is not to take anything away from Yoyoka. Yoyoka is the best female, under 21 drummer on the planet.
When you get to the level Senri and Yoyoka are at, they are both on the top 500 drummer list, so it is just a matter of semantics and playing styles once you get to their level.

The Purdie Shuffle has been used by so many drummers. Bonham used it on Fool In The Rain, Porcaro used it on Rosanna and Copeland used it on Walking On The Moon. It was also used by Purdie on Babylon Sister. Japan has an incredible music scene! Yoyoka is a prodigy but Senri Kawaguchi and Fumiya are on another level too! Their jazz, progressive jazz and metal are littered with 8 string guitars, 6 string bass, and next level percussionists!

I am not going to criticize her in the least because she is a phenomenon but when posting these videos I would like to see ether playing along with the song and then without then song. We are still hearing Purdue’s very subtle hihat work that I think she is missing. Yes it is an extremely teeny critique but I would be curious none the less to hear if she is really grasping the essence of those little nuances. Having said that however she is quite astounding

I admire Yoyoka's abilities and feel. Unfortunately, Steely Dan puts me to sleep. Please forgive me if I have offended hundreds of subscribers. I foresee a day when Yoyoka becomes the next Bernard Purdie, Vinnie Colaiuta, Jeff Porcaro, Greg Bissonnette, Jonathan Moffatt or Chad Smith - to be hired for session work to elevate songs to the top level. Along the way, top-level performers will invite her to tour with them as a band member.
I came across a couple of songs from 'Maynard Ferguson - Live from San Francisco' many years ago. It's a big band (not sure if you're into that type of music)... but it's outrageous! Why do I mention it here? Because it's Greg Bissonnette on drums and his brother on bass. Check out 'Fireshaker' and '21st Street Shuffle'. I promise you won't be disappointed :)

Such a natural player, I believe I saw her play another version of this , technically, it was good. But this version was really swinging and much more in the pocket, just relaxed and probably couldn't have been better. I can't wait to see what the future holds for this young lady!
Bernard, love's to take credit for other drummers work., which is sort of annoying. Mainly because the guy has so many verified classic music that he has played on, it's unnecessary for someone with his accomplishments. He will probably come out and say that it was him playing for Yoyoka.
