  • Designing For is a series which looks at one specific level, character, or idea in gaming and breaks down the central theme to that element to figure out what it's, well, designing for! In this episode, we give the reigns to long-time editor, AuthorMx, to talk about Tears of the Kingdom, and how its overworld map manages to not be a quick and easy rehash, but to expand upon the ideas of role-playing, worldbuilding, and development that most recent Zelda titles really love honing in on!

I especially love how despite the world map being the same, there are a LOT of subtle differences caused by the upheaval that make the world FEEL new despite being familiar. Its arguably more fun to see all the little ways familiar places have changed than exploring an entirely new map.

Pretty much how I feel with the Like A Dragon series :)
It's a franchise known for reusing locations (mainly Kamurocho), but it changes as the times do to reflect how Kabukicho (the town Kamurocho is based on) looks in the modern day.

I just finished doing that on my own, exploring everything again to see how different it is, and to be honest I didn't remember how epic the castle theme was on botw is. That's a major difference and I didn't even notice it on totk!

It is not only compelling to return to old locations, but you also spend a huge amount of time in new locations anyway. I was on the Great Sky Island for hours before I touched down on Hyrule field, & eventually found the depths. When you return to each region there are significant new features each time & a whole new dungeon. There is nothing lazy about this game.

Funnily enough, I just watched a video talking about how Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 were able to get such huge advantages from reusing the regions of Black and White instead of making new ones, though that focused more on the narrative being able to grow than the gameplay.

One more thing that needs a mention is the awesome Cave systems in Totk, expanding the world in this way was genius and as much as I like the underworld and sky, they were possibly my favorite new feature to Totk’s world.

When we first heard that they were reusing the map, a LOT of people were upset saying that it would be boring and that they were being lazy, and most of all "they're spending 6 YEARS without changing the map? What are they doing with their time then?" and I would always just think... This is the same team of developers that gave us Breath of the Wild. Whatever they're cooking up its gonna be GOOD!
    And I was right. :)

I still remember how exciting it was in Red Dead Redemption 2 when I discovered most of the RDR1 map had been remade & how upset I was that I couldn’t go to Mexico. I spent so long just riding out to revisit locations from the first game. I was more motivated to explore than I would have been if the entire map was original

when i began totk i was so impatient to get off the skyland tutorial and go back home, to hyrule, only to discover it wasn't home anymore - everything felt slightly off, different. so my experience fit perfectly with the story.
the only thing, shrines. i was so tired from completing shrines in botw that i couldn't bother in totk. did the bare minimum.

I have a complicated feeling about TotK, in that I do think it's an improvement over BotW in most ways, but I also didn't enjoy it as much as BotW. This video is arguing that reusing the same map is good because the developers can focus on other aspects of the game, like the fusing mechanics and adding a sky and underground world, and I agree with that. But I still can't help but feel bored towards the end of TotK. It's partially because the world is reused. I've already explored every nook and cranny of this world in BotW. While it is fun seeing what has changed, there's also not enough change to make it feel completely different.
I think my main disappointment gameplay wise is how I didn't enjoy the sky and depths as much as exploring Hyrule. The sky reuses the same island layouts, and the depths look the same everywhere. Dark. What I loved about exploring Hyrule is seeing the different biomes, color pallets, races, culture, towns, landscape, etc. The sky and depths have some key areas that had some good moments, such as Master Kohga and the thunder islands above Faron, but outside of those moments, I couldn't help but feel the sense of repetitive design. And it doesn't help when the game has a repetitive grind getting zonaite parts to upgrade your batteries.
I'd argue that the thing I want most from a sequel is a better story to flesh out the world and characters. And I felt like they didn't do enough with the story for my standards. The Zonai are such an interesting race wrapped in mystery, yet we only see 2 of them and don't actually know what their culture was like. We only know their technology. I would've loved it more if Rauru could be a traveling companion and you have the option to call on him at different parts of the map for him to talk about the Zonai. Like with the Ring Ruins, Rauru could talk about how they were made or what purpose they made it for. To me, Zonai just felt like Sheikah 2.0, except they're all dead so you can't talk to any of them. I mean technically Mineru is still around, but you still don't get to talk to her. I also wasn't a fan of how most of the story took place in the past again. And because this is meant to be told in a linear fashion, collecting them out of order ruined some of the scenes. The story is probably the biggest sticking point for me because when the first teaser was shown, I saw the potential for where the story can go. Link working with Zelda, learning about the Zonai, why Ganondorf was sealed underground, and so on. But I didn't get any of the things I wanted. Zelda is separated, we don't really learn about the Zonai, and the only reason Ganondorf is underground is because... the cutscene took place underground? Why were they battling underneath Hyrule Castle in the first place, we don't know. I'm just disappointed in the lack of commitment to the story. I have a much higher standard for story in 2023 than in 2017.

So well-said. im BIG on story, and i just hated how weak the writing was. the thing that pissed me off the most was how they robbed Zelda of a powerful thematic moment; they built up how "forbidden" draconification was and how its irreversible, only to just magically turn her back in the end with no explanation. They trolled the hell out of us & cheapened a sacrifice that was supposed to be powerful.
Also, the fusion-mechanic just didnt really do it for me. I hated the clunkiness of it in-battle too; you mean to tell me that if i want to use a fused arrow, i have to stop, pause, and scroll EEEEEEEVERY time i shoot a single arrow?? Completely kills the flow of battle. I wish they had a mechanic where we could pre-fuse arrows before a battle, and then just have something like 20 keese-eye arrows stocked up in our inventory. But the combat/weapon-system as a whole is broken anyway.
And dont get me started on those temples. like..i guess they "tried", but...even thats up for debate after that disgrace of a water "temple."

After I finished the game and I was done with all the quests I wanted to complete (leaving aside boring ones), my account says I spent 210h. Not bad for a DLC !!!
BOTW on the other hand, including Champions' Ballad DLC, took me 185h to complete.
The negative feedback is likely due to bad first impression: they are seeing same graphics and same map. If Nintendo changed either one of these, I bet the reception will be better. Much better if they change both the (surface) map and graphics. First impression can be very misleading (i.e., causing one to think it's the same game while it's not) but you know the saying : you don't get a second chance to make a good first impression. In other words, people who already trashed TOTK at the start are very likely not changing their mind. It's sad because the unique mechanics of TOTK is completely overlooked. Only the other game designers seem to understand how "impossible" and incredible this is of an achievement.
My only complaint about the game is the sky islands being quite small (and sometimes a bit empty and lacking of variety) for the most part, the great number of Rauru's blessings shrines (which could have been instead real mini dungeons) and many of the schematics being useless, and (though it's just me) building complex zonai machines takes a lot of time due to trial and error.
For people who said "they are lazy it took them 6 years for this?" remember that the last year was used just for fixing possible bugs in the game's mechanics. The game was already "finished".

They designed the map not as a place to put the characters but as another character that you can get to know with the years, and that's how they made a map invulnerable to the pace of time

Meanwhile, I'm in the minority that while I do enjoy both BotW and TotK, I didn't enjoy them because I thought they were fun Zelda games. And the world they made is part of the reason why. As someone who REALLY enjoyed Skyward Sword's more "dungeon-like" area design, the world of BotW and TotK just allowing you to completely skip parts you don't feel like dealing with by using a glider or a machine just felt like the opposite of why I enjoyed previous Zelda maps.
Then again, I've also never been the biggest fan of Zelda overworld gameplay, so games pretty much focusing on that near exclusively was going to disappoint me no matter what.
