With the driver's title on the line, we're seeing a previously unseen side to Lando Norris. The pressure has exposed that he doesn't have the mental strength. He's shown an unpleasant side, too.
Max went from 17 to 1 without DRS in the third fastest car during insane weather conditions with a 20 second lead at the end. People who say this was luck are just being willfully delusional.
Third fastest car (debatable) doesn't matter in these conditions, just look at the number two and three. And the SC's and red flags definitely mattered. Great drive from Verstappen but the point Norris made among others is legitimate.
Come on Vangeen, Alpine weren't gifted nos 2 and 3. After the red flag, how many laps did they lead George and Lando? 37!! So, for more than half the race, the Alpines kept those boys behind. That is not a gift. And, both Alpine drivers didn't put a foot wrong, whereas others did. So, very well deserved.
I would like to comment on Max but first I can't get past LANCE STROLL INTO THE GRAVEL TRAP....I am convinced he did it on purpose. There was so much road for him to work with and yet he opted for the most puzzling option....\ As for MAx, by the time of restart Max was closing in on Ocon, you could tell he was playing a game of patience, not trying to overdrive and bring in his tires, he did the same thing biding his time behind Charles. As to whether he would get past Norris, all we know is that Norris was struggling with straight line pace and the fact that Max was able to put in 17 fastest laps means he would have had the pace to best his rivals.
Over this whole 2024 season the McLaren car has been the most dominant and should have won both the constructor's and the driver's championship. But it didn't happen because Norris is an avarage driver in the best car and not even remotely in the same league as Verstappen. But then again .. who is? Verstappen can maximize and/or win races in the fastest, the second fastest or the the third fastest car. He just keeps getting the best results no matter what the odds. Race after race. When the pressure gets higher, he performs even better. With Lando you get the exact opposite stats. About race IQ... This is something that can be learned to some degree but only truly masterd if you are born with it. Max is a born winner with an unparalleled race IQ who worked harder than anyone else to become the winner he is today. That is why he is unbeatable. It is both his DNA andhis work ethic. Even with the FIA and British nationalist Johnny Herbert doing everything they can to actively penalize him harder than they would anyone else while favouring Norris every chance they get. There is in the end only one winner: Max. I like to think the rain that fell during the Brazillian GP was Senna smiling on Verstappen and telling Johnny Herbert to get an umbrella and leave.
Friday practice is great. It's like a podcast. Saturday being a self contained sprint and Sunday quali being high risk feels ideal, but is probably unsustainable for the teams with such a long season. Sprint weekends are already hard on the crews.
Yuki did great shame how he keeps crashing under pressure. Liam would have finished higher if Piastri didn't spin him. But even with a spin he still scored points and ahead of Perez (who spun by himself). Liam hasn't driven this race outside this weekend and hasn't driven this years VCarb in the wet or on those tyres. Not bad for a kid from NZ.
According to Albon he heard a failure alert beep in his ear after hitting the brakes. I didn’t know drivers had such a thing. But it gives more credence to Vowles saying it was rear axel failure.
The winning race strategy was going long and not pitting under yellow in case there's a red flag. Three drivers chose not to pit, and after the red flag, they ended the race 1, 2, 3.
Always the best content. Keep it coming! As a Norris fan I am actually relieved the worst tension will be off him in Vegas. He qualified 15 then crashed early in the race. I wonder how much of that kind of bad memories drivers carry with them. We shall see.
You make ur luck & if anybody thinks he wasn't going to win anyways don't know what they're talking about. How Lando qualifying 15th in Q1 & Max out due to red flag??
The young Max Verstappen spent hours doing laps in Genk, rain or shine. His father tirelessly gave instructions on the wet karting track to cultivate a future world champion. The other young riders were already back inside during the rain.
I like wet racing it challenges the drivers skill and ability. But heavy rain and low viability is no good for racing. Its like a Marathon and drivers just pace themselves and struggle to keep it on the track. Hoping the race director would stop the race for 70% distance and full points. I would not want to be a driver in the damp foggy conditions trying to push a car with 3 lights looking like a 80's space invader in front of you. This has bottled the championship chase and put it in Max favor. Well done for Alpine leading the race with Ocon and getting a 2nd and third. Jeremy Clarkson must of been going crazy at Diddly Squat farm seeing the team he is invested in doing well.
Let’s not down play what Norris said though. He’s shown a very bitter and sly side to a so called ‘mate’ or used to be a good mate. Saying there was no talent and it was solely down to luck is bizarre to say especially when he and most other drivers couldn’t keep their car on the track. Max drove faultlessly while we saw other drivers crumble
Well it wasn’t the right choice cause a safety car and red flags are a thing these days. We had so many red flags because of rain, you can count on it.
what you guys don’t seem to understand with the 4 of you is that the reason pitting norris was a mistake is because they were trying to cover off russel instead of max. Being Lando, max is your rival, so if you just copy what he does, you can afford to stay out another lap regardless if its a red or not. Trying to cover off george is what cost him and thats why its a clear mistake
McLaren should keep on developing this already top (best of the field) car. Support Lando for the full 100% and drive every single F1 race believing you can win it all and not only the last 10 races like they basicly do this season. Max will most likely still make it Lando difficult and one of the Ferrari’s could be close but with 24 races in a season, the fastest car, with Lando driving it, should be able to grab it all.
Unless Mercedes and McLaren knew that Colapinto was going to crash, they made the right call. Norris had tyres older than Max's, if they stay out and risk sliding into a barrier it destroys the championship run. You cannot predict when and how a red flag is going to materialise. Max was incredibly lucky they had a restart the same way he was unlucky in qualifying when the red flag ruined his session. It is part of the game.
Just a funny moment that the guys didn't mention.... I thought it was absolutely classic that the most forceful team orders Mclaren gave all season ("swap the cars" - simple, clear, decisive) came 5 minutes after the championship was over (Max was leading, Lando had fluffed the SC restart). Just ridiculous. I was hoping for the Lando WDC since the summer, mostly because I hate Max's wheel to wheel nonsense... but it's over now and I can't even bring myself to be bothered about it. Max deserves the championship just on the strength of that race, and McLando have made SO. MANY. MISTAKES. it's very hard to argue that they deserved anything. They already dodged multiple bullets by the time it got to the race... their luck had to run out eventually.
I do agree with Matt at about 53:00. Piastri seems to have the higher ceiling, better potential, whatever you want to call it. He's literally only in his 2nd season, and already shown some stuff that we haven't seen from Lando his first few seasons. I think the teammates battle next season at McLaren will be one of the most interesting, if not THE most interesting. If I had to put my money on it, I'm really tempted to go with Piastri beating Lando next season (unless McLaren decides to favor Norris and develop the car more to his liking, which I don't expect McLaren to do). Piastri has that (cold furious quiet) dawg in him! Lol. I think he has more of a champion mentality (looking back at past champions) than Norris.
As a Norris fan I sadly have to agree with you. But also Lando did not have a quality car his first 4 seasons but did manage to get 5 podiums during that time. So that delayed his winning. But am sure Oscar will push him next year. Lando is just not ruthless enough to be a great champion. Hope I am wrong

F1 or in general Motorsport is engineering competition. The car and engineers working on for a driver to drive it can make him look bad or a GOAT one. Which are more important cars and their engineers or drivers? I will give you a glimpse for it: Alonso, Sainz, Stroll drove F1 cars while still injuries and there no effects for their overall performances respectively. Minor damaged front wings or wrong front wing flap (wrong setup) would make cars lost a couple of tens or more. Could you imagine what Ham's engineers team can do to his car to make him look worse?
Totally enjoyed this episode. Thrilled for Ocon (and Matt 😊). While I’d describe myself as anti-Verstappen (except when he’s manhandling Norris), that was an excellent drive by him. Bewildering take from Alex about Lewis. We can all see Mercedes is sabotaging his performance (since 2022) by frequently giving him an undriveable car and “experimental” set-ups in order to elevate RUS profile as they pivot to him as their new team leader. Nevertheless, another great chat.
The only reason Hamilton was slow today was because he was playing around with the setup to make the car better for Mercedes next year. Slowly, slowly, gather data. He won't even get the benefit of this, of course, but that's what you get from an honourable knight of the realm.
Actually if you listen to Merc’s Mexico debrief (ruclips.net/video/ehEXF337z04/видео.htmlsi=PoXcm_nMuinTdV7H ) it’s the team messing with the setup trying to gather the data between the two cars.
I'm still so salty as a McLaren fan that max destroyed everyone and go so lucky on that strategy. Bad call 1 lap too early or so for McLaren to pit. Damnit. Thought the chaos would help our team
Verstappen reigns supreme in the wet. Champion’s drive

I wouldn’t be surprised if some McLaren fans are saying Red Bull paid Williams to crash Franco for the red flag 😂
Does Oscar get to win a race now or does he have to keep letting Lando by .
He will have to let him win.. Unless there is another car between them
Oscar must have thought Max was Lando because he let him by easier than his teammate 💀
Since they are now just going for the Constructors as long as both drivers finish at the top Oscar should be free to win.
I am sorry but lando norris isn't a 4.5/5 driver...
He doesn't have the mentality
He is a 4 at most..
Maybe he will develop but for now he isn't
