  • This new version of the popular H501 GPS camera quadcopter is up to $100 cheaper than the H501S version. Yet it still has the same airframe, brushless motors, 1080p camera, GPS position hold, telemetry, and return to home and landing capability. Buy it here shrsl.com/?dpkd
    Pros
    - Powerful brushless motor quadcopter at a reasonable price. Price reduction achieved by elimination of FPV and follow me capabilities of the H501S.
    - GPS position hold flying.
    - Return to home and automatic landing capability at takeoff point. Returns to home automatically on loss of signal from the transmitter, or if manually initiated by the return to home button.
    - Transmitter is not a battery eater like that of the H501S. You'll get many flights out of a set of batteries with this transmitter (I'm still going strong with more than a dozen flights).
    - Great transmitter. I've flown it out to 300 meters before losing sight of the quadcopter forced me to turn back. But I still had control of the quadcopter throughout that flight.
    - Transmitter includes telemetry information of quadcopter's directional heading, distance, height, satellites received, and quadcopter remaining battery power.
    - Very portable. Just the right save to take on a trip or on an airplane.
    - Relatively quiet and non-intrusive in flight. Should be able to fly this in many places without being hassled.
    - 1080p full HD camera.
    Cons
    - Does not have the FPV or follow me capability of the H501S. These capabilities were removed in the H501C to greatly reduce the cost of this quadcopter.
    - Still weighs more than 250 grams, and will require FAA registration.
    Vendor's Description:

    Altitude Hold Mode
    GPS built-in, can lock the drone`s position,Hovering at a certain altitude.
    GPS Return to Home and Failsafe
    The Hubsan H501C features built-in GPS which enables the quadcopter to enter into a failsafe mode if the connection to the radio transmitter is lost. In failsafe mode, the flight control system will automatically control the quadcopter and bring it back to the Return To Home point and land. The RTH function can also be enabled directly from the transmitter, this will automatically bring the quadcopter to the Home point and land safely.

      Quadcopter 101 In your opinion, would you pick this bird or the Bugs 2C? I'm tossed up between the two although this one seems to have the better camera.

    A lot of people have been asking me to review the WLToys Q333-A. I will eventually. But dang, for about the same price you could have so much more in capability, such as the quadcopter in the above video.

    • @RagicalPlays
      @RagicalPlays 8 лет назад

      Q333 is mostly the cool factor methinks. I mean it is a sexy beast in the looks department, even without any options or brushless motors... But yeah for the same amount you can get this or for around €20 right now you can even get a CX20

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  8 лет назад

      Playin' w/Kouji82, Borgman The Q333 looks good. But in the end, it's just an average 100 meter toy grade FPV quadcopter. There are many out there already in this class, much cheaper, and with much better perfromance. Such as the following ruclips.net/video/scJ67mWmD_E/видео.html

    • @RagicalPlays
      @RagicalPlays 8 лет назад

      Yes I completely agree, but that retractable landing gear and being "Inspired" by another "One" :P That is kinda the main selling point
      I also shudder at that proprietary battery in any case and it seems rather fragile :(

    I run this quad with a 25 - 200mw all in one fpv camera / vtx mounted on the nose of the drone and powered by a seperate 1S lipo attached to the bottom. I have not done extreme long range, but at several hundred feet, I don't see a lot of difference in power levels and the 25mw runs much cooler. I bought a 501S controller and it works great with it. However, another user also provided me with fairly easy mod to tap video and voltage off the standard camera board and feed that to a seperate fpv transmitter as well. When bound with the 501S controller you will gain altitude hold mode, full telemetry display on screen, follow me mode, and fpv reception on the controller screen, if you add the fpv equipment to the quad. If you use the controller fpv receiver you will of course have to find a common frequency and manually set the receiver in the 501S transmitter to it. Once you set that, unless you rebind, it will stay set.

    Yes, that's what I thought, like the 107+ range, but right stick pushed does nothing, neither does there seem a way to get settings menu (SE) to adjust sensitivity, not that I even want headless, just that it's says it's a feature, I reckon they've removed that capability. Love the video, and thanks for instant reply, cheers from the UK.

    Much better video than 502e, comparing the video you took in similar locations in western PA from your earlier review of the 502e and this 501c. It's sharper, the color is better, the white balance isn't as blown out. The 1080p cam on the 501c is quite a upgrade. Is this the same camera that is on the 501s, the FPV version? I'm asking because it looks better than the video you took with that model (501S) some time back. And thanks for another great review!

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  8 лет назад

      As far as I know, it should be the same camera as the H501S. Unless they had to do something different because of the FPV?

  • @didactylos4diddy474
    @didactylos4diddy474 8 лет назад +1

    With the reduction in onboard tech and the power drain for the FPV is there a noticeable increase in the flight time compared to the 501S?

    I was curious if this quad actually still had a VTX. It would almost make sense for Hubsan to use the same internal parts and software as the 501S. So if you used an FPV receiver with this, are you sure you wont get an FPV signal from it? Even if it didn't have a VTX, you could probably add one and have a pretty awesome package!!

      See the following video of the H502E starting at 1:33 ruclips.net/video/NLj2hqVC4aA/видео.html
      The video shows how to rebind Hubsan quadcopters, along with a quicker way to calibrate the compass. Although it's a different quadcopter, the technique is the same for all Hubsans.
      To rebind (if bind has been lost):
      1) Plug in the quadcopter and place it on a flat and level surface.
      2) Hold down the transmitter camera button, while simultaneously turning on the transmitter.
      You should only need to rebind once, after which you should only need to turn on the transmitter to bind.
      Also consider calibrating the sticks of your transmitter. Here's how ruclips.net/video/HIuSeDmszXg/видео.html

    hi thanks for the video review. can you tell me what the top speed m/s in forward and elevation? and is this info also part of the telemetry info on the remotet? much thanks

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  8 лет назад

      It depends if you fly in GPS or manual mode. I believe in high rate GPS, top speed is limited to 10 m/s (a little over 20 mph). But in manual altitude hold mode, there is no restriction. The following fellow clocked his at 20 m/s (45 mph) before it flipped over ruclips.net/video/ZsL4Xnw1aSQ/видео.html

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  8 лет назад

      And no, speed is not part of the telemetry. Telemetry info includes directional heading, range, altitude, remaining battery power, and satellites locked on

      Did it complete the compass calibration successfully? Also, you need to be outdoors in an open area for it to receive the satellites. If you're doing such, what specifically is it doing or not doing?

      @Quadcopter101  7 лет назад +1

      You can set them to taste, either full on, blinking, or off by pushing down on the throttle trim button while in flight. My personal preference is blinking as it simulates the blinking lights of a real aircraft in flight.

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  7 лет назад

      Not sure what tried everything means, but you probably need to factory rebind it. It's very simple.
      1. Plug in the battery.
      2. Hold down the upper left video button, while simultaneously turning on the transmitter.
      Wait a few seconds. If it next asks you to start the compass calibration, then you are rebound.
      For follow on startups, it should remember the bind (no need to hold the video button every startup).Not sure what

    I have just finished up watching and reading a whole bunch of reviews for various Hubsan X4 Models.
    If you would be so kind as to answer a question for me I would be very grateful.
    Basically I'm turning around and around in circles trying to decide which model to get. The Desire Toy grade model looks to do all I want, however I have heard that brushless motors are a really big plus. Would you consider that at twice the price where I am in the world that the H501C still represents value compared to the H502E ?
    Thanks for your time if you get this.

    +Quadcopter101 is this quad worth the extra money over the 502e? I really like the thought of brushless motors. Do you know of any brushless upgrades for the 502? And would that mean I'd have to upgrade ESCs?

    I have flown it 194 meters high and over 214 meters distance on my 9th flight. At that distance you need a binocular as this is a small quad. I found it was taking time to response on my left and right. RTH pressed and came back home. Pictures were not that good from above 70 meters. But it was a great experience with the $200 machine.

    hey I was wondering, would you be able to recommend a good quadcopter that has atleast a 720p (a 1080p would be nice) camera with fpv capabilities, a "gps position hold" feature and a reasonable battery for $200 or under?

  • @GadgetInspector

    What you think of the h502s I have seen your video but wanted to know what you think, I like the h501 but it’s just a little big for my needs but I do like the 1080p the only real thing I am debating is the 720p on the h502 if this had the same camera I would get the h502! do you know any alternatives for something that has the size and gps features but good camera ?

    I recalibrated my transmitter as you showed in your video and now my 501c will not bind I've tried everything and no luck at all and for the person asking about no headless mode the newest 501c don't have it even though it's advertised

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  7 лет назад +4

      When you recalibrated, did you do it as follows?
      1) hold both sticks up and to the left, while simultaneously turning the transmitter on.
      2) Move both sticks around in a large circles, making sure to hit all extreme edges including corners.
      3) Let go of the sticks and press any trim button until you hear a beep.
      4) Turn off the transmitter.
      Now to bind the quadcopter (if it lost bind), first verify that your quadcopter battery is fully charged, then do as follows.
      1) Plug in the quadcopter and place it on a flat and level surface.
      2) While keeping the transmitter close to the quadcopter, hold the camera button (upper left trigger button) down while simultaneously turning on the transmitter. Wait a few seconds to see if it binds. Try a couple more times if it doesn't bind the first try.
      If 1) and 2) still doesn't work, repeat but start with Step 2) then proceed to 1).
      Finally, once you get it to bind, it should automatically bind for future flights. Only need to redo the binding procedure if it loses bind.

    Thank you thank you thank you !!!!! Just got my Hubsan 501C today, read the manual 400 times, calibrated the tx, took it outside to calibrate the compass but no joy ... oh yes it beeped !!! nice lights .. looks good but still no joy. Then noticed on the transmitter tx ,,,,,,, good rx nothing! tried a dozen more times, no joy. Decided to check out Quadcopter 101 ... yeah .. had it on the work bench frustrated as heck but ok will try the video/pic button hold turn on the tx as you said.... beeeeeep !!! and yeah !! I had a proper bind!! So will now take it outside and do it in a proper invironment for the first time. Your cheque is in the mail... no just kidding..t wanted you to know you are a great help and wealth of knowledge on here, and the reason I purchased this Hubsan in the first place was because of your great demo. thanks again. oh and i wish i could find out what happens when you press down the left hand throttle stick... a little symbol comes on .. not shown in the manual.. not going to touch that until i find out LOLOL ps: check out my youtube some time if you want, am starting to post some video on it .ruclips.net/channel/UCjCc-Z66m8xbdoDgJ3BdQrw Happy Flying GrampaKenCanada

    Hey QC101 - can you do a short video (Or maybe you already have) about BATTERY CARE and tips and tricks? I have a lot of the Tarantula X6 / JJRC X1 batteries that ALL died about the same time (about 10 batteries all at the same time) -- that's $100 down the toilet to me -- Am I only supposed to get so many flights out of them? Am I over charging them? Should I not store them charged? Should I leave them uncharged until right before flight day? Should I not wash them in the dishwasher? (Kidding) -- anyway - let me know! -- The batteries simply wont hold a charge -- after charging them for a couple of hours - the start out with blinking lights on the Quad and then just stop after a few seconds ---- I would ESPECIALLY like to know about care because of my XK-Detect 380 batteries which are $50 each --- and I am about to buy the H501S as well - and I cannot afford to lose my quad over a lake because I cant depend on the batteries ---
    Thank you!

  • @hawat1
    @hawat1 8 лет назад

    I have the 502E and that's also a lot of bang for the buck ! GPS, RTH the same telemetry information as the 501C. Great remote range and fly time. I have to admit the 501C camera looks a lot nicer, though. And although the GPS position hold works well, the 502 E is fighting any kind of breeze really hard. If you have to go against a head wind it slows down quite a bit. Just a small brushed motor quad after all. But for $ 83 you cant go wrong. I would love to put the Eachine EF01 camera on it, but I am afraid the camera will block / mess with the GPS signal.

    I wanted to buy one of those, but I'm afraid of being held in customs, because here in Brazil ANATEL requires that the drone is hologado. It is common to retain them?

    • @tiagotiagot
      @tiagotiagot 8 лет назад

      You're missing a "mo" there :)
      Also, there is an English word for that: "homologated" :)
      And just to clarify for anyone else reading this; ANATEL is Brazil's version of the FCC, and they require any imported device that transmit radio or whatever to be tested locally to see if the emissions obey the requirements; and if it isn't officially sold here, each unit needs to undergo a costly inspection to receive a seal of approval or else they get to keep it. I got no clue how often they're catching drones nowadays though; but my two X5C's got taxed by customs (one in the middle of last year, and another a few weeks ago, but only the first one came with a transmitter).

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  8 лет назад +1

      If it's stopping, then it's at the edge of reception from your transmitter. But I get close to 300 meters with mine. For example, in the following video I do a circle around my position at about 270 meters radius. ruclips.net/video/XBWZzdKOaKg/видео.html
      Are you flying near WiFi interference, such as near an apartment building? If so, try flying at another location. Also very important, make sure to use new and good quality batteries in the transmitter.

    I bought one a week ago on eBay for $125 shipped from NJ and it's a great quad. I bought it primarily for the gps position hold and RTH which works when you've lost sight of it or it flys out of range. They work. The 1080p video is nice too. One thing I haven't figured out is the purpose of the quad in a circle icon. I'm guessing the "H" on the display is for the compass heading? Quadcopter 101's reviews are tops in this hobby. You're "the professor " of drone reviews. I'm a newbie with drones at 71 but am loving them!

    I couldn't find your last reply
    but also when I'm done with the second calibration, the lights go off for a second then come back on blinking, it won't compass lock. is that a problem with the transmitter or the quadcopter? tia

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  7 лет назад

      Regarding the not arming That should be a simple one to fix. The likely reason that it's not arming is that the transmitter sticks may be out of calibration. Do you know how to do such? The following shows how to do it for an older Hubsan quad, but the procedures are the same for all Hubsans. Watch and repeat what's done from 29 seconds to 1 minutes 6 seconds in this video ruclips.net/video/HIuSeDmszXg/видео.html
      Regarding the lights blinking, you can set them to taste. You can have them on constantly, you can set them to blink, or you can turn them off entirely. Press the trim button under the throttle to cycle through the three LED modes (I like blinking, it looks like an airplane from afar :)
      Regarding compass calibration, try doing it as I demonstrate in the following video. It's done with a H502C, but the procedures are the same. I find this way of compass calibration to be the easiest/quickest/best way. ruclips.net/video/NLj2hqVC4aA/видео.html
