LaMonica Garret was simply outstanding and Sam Elliott is a National Treasure. Loved this show!
Garret’s character was probably my favorite. But Hill’s really did it for me, too.

The delivery of the line with the accent speaks volumes of the actors and realty they bring to the table.

That line about the world not getting any better was chilling. Many years ago my white-haired grandmother made a similar statement. She said that as a young woman she'd had hope that people would change for the better in her lifetime... but they hadn't. But that fact didn't diminish her desire to make the world a better place; she was a light to her family and community.

I just cannot get over Sam Elliot. Along with Clint Eastwood, he IS the Western and everyone knows it. The man's talent simply doesn't stop. And Mr. Garrett is rather impressive. I think I'll keep an eye out for him.
I liked him in Big Lebowski, small but significant role. Like him a lot, great actor.
I can honestly say this has been the best series I have ever seen. I never get that emotional but Sam Elliot's acting was as real as it gets absolutely amazing.
Best show ever. The writing is great it just fits each character and makes them shine. You got to love Sam Elliott's line.

The funny thing is, Noemi is a Gypsy.
She likely would know at least as much if not more about horses then Thomas.
Other then that, great scenes and great performance.
its quite possible that the figure-eight tie was a cowboy technique unknown or not used by romanis due to either differences in horse handling or just general culture

Romani and Gypsy aren't exactly the same. The fact that among these Germans they considered her a Gypsy shows some disrespect. Gypsy is not a great term, it's cool sounding but many Romani take offense though some have embraced it. The root, "gypped" means to steal, and sometimes refers to a roaming nomadic type similar to a hobo. You can also be a Gypsy without being Romani, because gypsy is again, similar to hobo or wanderer as well.
Given how women were treated in society back then, across the board, her skills may be much more limited. These Germans were miners and however they know each other is dubious - but if they were poor miners in Germany, she likely didn't have access. Meanwhile women were taught side saddle at this time, it was considered immodest to ride other ways. She may have been too poor or grew up in an area without horse wrangling. She may have been so sheltered as a wife she was forced to do menial labor - or the other way around. She may have been rich and forced into a caste that spent more time being served. This would make sense given the jewelry and style - many Romani are community orientated, which means her skills may have been in tasks that weren't survival.
A seamstress, jeweler or a nanny would do well in society and poorly out here. She may have had money and been courted into this lifestyle as a means to control her as well - take her away from a rich family and isolate her, or if she was super poor, her skills may be more specific.
She may have been a school teacher or a jewelers assistant. Given her lavish jewelry that's well styled, and outfits, being Romani is possible - but they are heavily communal... and they don't always wander with horses. Many were polish and used mules or tended sheep - and horses are dangerous. Not just the danger of being thrown, but they are valuable... and kids in a society with horses tend to wander. This can incentivize village to only keep working livestock, if they want to keep their children from leaving so easily, and coming back horseless as well as sullied.
Given the hardship in Europe at this time, many fleeing to the US were doing so to escape terms like, "gypsy" and the sentiments that would eventually fuel WW1.
But it may also be that she had an abusive or controlling husband, and the shock she is having is her newfound independence. Skills she may have had may be repressed entirely, this isn't uncommon. Even if she knows how to ride a horse, if she gets flashbacks of beatings or punishments over riding, she may be no longer able to ride.
It's also common in this era to fear horses in general, as they killed many people. Losing a family member may have scarred her - being thrown, kicked or trampled will do that. Being at a battle as a child and being exposed to cavalry charges - all great reasons to never want to ride.
We romanticize horses, but they're dangerous. Look at Christopher Reeves. Even today with all our advances, getting rolled under a horse is normal and they are an expensive luxury.
This wouldn't be commonly universal among Romani. I'm not saying this randomly either, my grandma was Romani and would balk at the use of gypsy. She went from Poland to Ireland to the US but she disapproved of my mother (her daughter in law) for horse riding for leisure. Pressured her into selling her horse too, due to the expense. She had many talks with me about similar talks - you don't take risks, you be frugal and learn skills when you need them and pay attention to other people. She disapproved of guns as well, though she raised boys to use them and girls to hate them - take that as you will. It was no secret she had some hypocrisy over gender roles. The Romani are a decent culture - but the world accepted this specific issue almost everywhere in its own way.
Thomas on the other hand is a military man in a gruesome war where the north had to invade, and these horses are much more prevalent in the US than they were in Germany, due to the mustangs running wild across the US. This abundance was one of the desirable traits of the US, much more free roaming opportunities like that.
Anyway just throwing out some context, it's easy to forget what these people were riding away from. I wish they'd shown more of the convoys past, you can imply a lot of fascinating things but they're almost all backdrop and their details are scarce.
But let's be honest, we all wanted 10 more episodes, great show.
@@BigMac8000 Gypsy actually derives from the old Greek term for, well Gypsies . Though some say it derives from "Egyptian".
Romani is just an adopted name by those Gypsies who settled in the western part of the Byzantine empire (whose people called themselves Romani ie. Romans). Later in the Ottoman Empire this part was called Rumelia, from which among other derives the name Romania of the modern national state. Also Gypsy is more neutral then how they call non- Gypsies: Gaje, which is a slightly derogatory term. But either way, not all Gypsies in Europe histtorically are Romani (basically Eastern European Gypsies) or want to be called Romani.

It takes a certain kind of hateful cynicism to have that mindset. One that has lead to millions of deaths in the past. It isn't reality. It's a lie. Unless you believe the earth should just be void of humans in general. And thats what many mass shooters and murdering dictators believed. I think you might need to think a little deeper on this. Or maybe have your own children. And if you or any of the people who liked this truly believe it and have children. I would ask how you could justify such a position in the face of having to kill your own child. I don't think you can, and if you could, just know the rest of us see you as the monster.

I love the fact that when Sam Elliott was younger, his voice was that deep it had an almost 'Lee Marvin in the 70s and 80s' kinda tone to it. Now he's older and his voice has softened a little....he sounds like Lee Marvin in the 50s and 60s 😂😂😂

Thomas was rather more violent with his fists. Josh Deets in one scene was only violent when wounding an outlaw in the shoulder. Other than that, there is no doubt that they share the same characteristics.

Taylor Sheridan always does a great job showing past and present racism in the Yellowstone series especially with Native Americans. Gypsies have always been treated terribly and I’m glad he showed it with the gypsy woman in 1883. People forget that gypsies were killed along side Jews by Nazi Germany during the holocaust because Hitler hated Gypsies almost as much as Jews.
I haven't watched this show but I thought it was a bit harsh to loose their horses. At least let them be able to set off in a different direction. Basically sentencing them to death.
The time period was harsh. You think that scene was harsh. Try out Billy Bob as Ft. Worth's sherrif.

They will be able to wrangle them back. They'll come back within a day or so, or they'll find them.
It's scary of course, but horses are smarter than people give them credit. It's really common to lose and find a horse again. It just bought them some time. There's a small chance they get intercepted, but it's relatively low.
The horses would’ve been fine, some man would’ve found them and felt lucky to have done so.

I paid for Paramont+ just to see this show, but I was sadly disappointed in the story. Too many things didn't make any sense. However the cast did a good job with what that had to work with and I especially liked the interaction between Thomas and Noemi. I'm glad Taylor Sheridan didn't kill them off like he did so many others. 5 minutes after it ended I canceled Paramont+.

My only complaint about this show is they never explored the inevitable racism that they would have experienced being an interracial couple in the 1880s
They did talk about it, Thomas and Noemi. It was why Thomas resisted becoming a couple for several months, despite obviously feeling love for her. That was as much as they could do within this story line and with only 10 episodes. This is a great show, I have no complaints except that I wanted it to go on a lot longer.
@Rowana Forrest I disagree. They didn't really explore it he literally jusy made 1 statement. The blonde had 2 relationships throughout the course of the show. They could have easily thrown in a scene or two with those two in Texas or Oklahoma and them being confronted by some klan folk. I'm mainly curious how the others he was riding with would react.
