- In 1967 this DC-9 was first delivered to Continental Airlines. Today it works as a small freighter under Kalitta Charters II N915CK. An incredible experience to hear once again how much more noise these older aircraft produce compared to the big jets of today.

That is what a real airplane is supposed to sound like!
I love the sound of JT8's in the mornin'.
The best part of waking up is jet sounds in your house (don't forget the " Folgers").
I have flown on DC9s (Continental Airlines) as a kid. Sitting in the near back row looking out the window to see the fan hub from 4 ft away and hearing the shrill scream during take-off was a hoot.
these days cf6 and soloviev d-30 are the ones i hear 2 to 3 mornings a week
The DC-9 took you up to the skies like no other passenger aircraft, ever. like straight out of a sling. The power you felt against your back on takeoff was just incredible. And of course the deafening engine roar, especially in the rear of the cabin. That's what was called flying! Still the most beautiful, graceful, elegant plane that ever flew.
Still flying in 2020, now 52.8 years old!
I remember the last time I rode in a DC-9. When that nose lifts up and it takes off it feels like you are on a rocket going straight up. Exhilarating!
Yes brings a tear to my eye what great memories super loud engines black smoke windows rattling foundation shaking oh yechin shaking oh yes those were great times especially if you live very close to an airport we loved every minute of it people today with their noise reduction programs they don't know what they're missing.
With you every step of the way in that! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The DC9 is the pinnacle of aviation!
This aircraft is still flying g in 2018 at the age of 50 years.
A friend of mine used to fly these for British Midland, he said they would climb like a rocket!
I always wanted to fly them myself along with the B757, never did get to fly the DC9 but am very happy spending my working life taking the good people of Manchester to and from the Mediterranean holiday resorts in B757's. Happy days!
Russell Butler The DC-9 was my first airliner. A very solid and nice machine. I remember it fondly but wouldn't take it over a 757! Cheers!
Until 5th of July 2019 unfortunaley!
The 9 dash 10 is a hot rod. You have to be careful during takeoff without leading edge slats not to walk the spoilers if you lose an engine. It has the same roll rate as F-16's. I still liked the 72 and 75 more.
JT8-D engines!! Yeah! Warrior aircraft still kicking! And well treated and cherished
Nothing looks as good on take off, as that T tail silhouette.
S C exactly. Exactly
Amazing! Baby DC-9 my all time favorite plane! I saw one in SDF during peak and I didn't care about all the heavy metal 747-400's, MD-11F's, 767. 757. etc that 50 year old DC-9 (N112PS) made my day!! Still remember my first DC-9 ride summer 66, good times!
I remember, one after another, DC-9's hooked up to the terminals. I thought they were ugly, and reminded me of dirty old buses.
Oh yes but you can't beat how loud they were it was beautiful.
You just have to love the JT8D!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! To hear the sound of real jet engines that I have not heard in such a long time, brings back so many fond memories. Once, these sounds are all one could hear at the airport. Today, it is boring, bland turbofan sadness. Thanks again for sharing.
DC 8 and 9's were built like a fort. Great camera work.
But not the Death Cruiser 10 though. Blowing cargo doors out, engines falling off and littering the American Midwest with engine parts.
Tom McGlone lol! Yet almost 50 years later their still flying!
@@tommcglone2867 asides from those first problems, the plane was prasied to be a solid and reliable workhorse by many operators.
@@tommcglone2867 the engine falling off wasn't the DC10's fault whatsoever and was 10000% American Airline's fault. Way to get it wrong and look like an ignorant fool .
That engine tone!! Just pure nostalgia!
I love these DC9. I think they are the cutest planes with engines that pack a punch. And look at the age difference between this DC9 and those in the background.
Always liked these shrinked version of the DC-9!
I love the DC9 series. My dream is if I am ever rich enough to buy a DC9 I would buy one intact from the scrap yard and turn it into a house n live in it. I love the airplane.
Me too that's my dream
Or 727 .. bit more sexy with the nose and window cockpit ... both sounds like nothing else compares .. thats how a plane should sound
Your Dream will be Real One Day....
Don't Lose Hope - Work For It 😍😍😍
I miss this old bird. Back in 2004, I was working at Kalita Air and I was the primary Aircraft Dispatcher for all of the operational proving runs that were required for this bird become certified to operate for Kalitta Air and for Kalitta Charters II. My avatar picture is actually me flying in one of Kalitta's B747-100 (N709CK) That old bird has since been retired and scrapped.
That's what you call "jetting outta there." Dear Mr. Douglas and his unsurpassable flying machines.
Now that is some nice tail i love the dc9s especially the noise and fast climb
Fantastic noise, love it. Nice aggressive rotation, too.
What a clean and great looking plane!
I believe this airplane went from Continental to Airwest to Republic to Northwest and then to Kalitta. JT-8D-7 engines. Good, solid airplane.
+Hank Fuddle It would have originally had the -7, but those are definitely not -7s on it now.
My first time flying was in a DC-9. It was Northwest Airlines to DCA and then on to MCO. we were in the back right up against the engine so it was loud. It was a flight to remember as we bounced on landing into Washington National.
A chart, or paper on the eyebrow window, lol. I used to do that. That morning sun! Nice video.
This plane is still flying today. Unbelievable
S C amazing!!!!!!!!!!
Love the Kalitta airlines! Good work and long live the DC-9 :)
Don't get to see them too often anymore :( Thanks for watching!
***** Yes, Connie Kalitta owns Kalitta Air and was also a drag racer.
Yes Conie Kalitta does own Kalitta Air, However, Kalitta Charters is owned by Doug Kalitta who is Connie's nephew.

Kalitta Air also owned American International Freight, which I was a ramp loader among other jobs there when they had a hub in Terre Haute,IN So I've been in and around tons of 727, DC-8 Stretch, Corsair, L1011, 747. Loved them all.
awesome take off. it was a short take off too. the dc9 was really a great plane in its days
...and back in the day these were called "whisperjets" by Eastern Airlines. They actually were a bit quieter than the non fanjet 720s and DC-8s Eastern also operated.
Flew on various dc9 variants
Loved the turbine whine sitting back by the tail
Love the old rotating beacon lights
Very good video, fantastic music (engine sound)
You hear that? Those are JT8D turbofans. I love the sound of JT8D turbofans in the morning son.
I hear that they re-engined this DC9 with the uprated JT8D-17s from the JT8D-7s...
Gary Orlando Which is a huge shame.
@ killsterrorists- I love the sound too, but these are turbojets. Some would say low bypass fans, but there is no fan. The, "fan" is the low pressure compressor. Bona fide turbojets.
No, they are NOT turbojets. They are 1st generation low bypass turbofans. Please look up Pratt and Whitney JT8D engines.
The sound of the JT8D-"9" specifically. JT8D-200 series, as those mounted on the MD80, are more quiet and efficient, but not so lovable to hear.
love that engine sound!
the last bastion of old school turbines along with older md80s
Great angle! Clearly shows elevator deflection at rotation. Love the control tabbed aircraft!
Mr. Douglas built a remarkable aircraft.
First time flying was on a DC-9 back in 84 or 85. I was 5 maybe.
Awesome! I just love seeing those old birds still flying :)
Love how small it looks compared to all the MASSIVE jets in the background xD
I use to refuel this aircraft a lot , when i worked night shift line service at Little Rock National Airport
now those were aircraft and that was flying !!!....was a thrilling experience as a youngster....the quiet , boring and generic looking airbuses of today leave me unmoved
theSaint 1964 You nailed that one !! Amen.
+theSaint 1964 Isn't it so? Planes today are so dull. The 380 excepted (maybe) but even that looks like it had a lobotomy at birth. No character.
I agree 100%
Oh yes... And once upon a time was a continous entering and staying in the cockpit, pilots had no noise abatement procs, were much more free to interpret flying... It was really a wonderful era for us, flying children...
Nines are all right but my Dad the Braniff A&P introduced me to L188 Electra and BAC 1-Eleven at an early age - and then 7-Twenty Seven.
Never had any room in my heart for Nines after that...
That's a fine Aircraft!!
Absolutely beautiful!!!!
love that Jetstar paint scheme on the 787
The McDonnell-Douglas DC-9 was an under-rated and under-remembered airplane.
One of my favourite plane ever. DC-9-10. I wish I could fly one day in this legendary plane
I remember back in about 1988 or so seeing one of these DC9's in the old Continental scheme parked next to my Delta 737-200 in Bozeman, Montana.
and it is STILL flying at 51 years old.
Those JT's sounded awesome, thnx.
The little sparrow!
back then, jet engines were called "Fuel-to-Noise Converters" for a good reason. Add the smoke to that, and be happy they are gone today.
Fantastic!! Very very Beautiful!!
Beautiful...just beautiful...
Love those JTD- 8's
JT8D NOT JTD-8
@@mrtuvok5578 Yes I know. Typed it wrong
Thanks for posting!
Aussie pilots called it the Sports Car of the air.
Beautiful machine, the more noise, the better.....
That is a beautiful airplane!
I flew on USAF C-9s many times and always thought they felt overpowered. But to be honest they were Med-Evac missions and probably never close to MTOW. But a 20-second takeoff on a freighter C-9 is impressive.
I still remember flying on a Texas International DC-9 back in 1975 Dallas to Corpus Christi
I believe that they should still be louder then hell"!!!! That's when plane spotting was fun. You couldn't wait for the 727's DC-9's and 737's to take off.
Lovely dc 9!!!!!! Thank you for your good vídeo!!! Of an old and brilliant plane i ❤️ Dc 9 and md’s
A gem of a video....
***** Somewhere under the Kalitta charters ll livery, is the Continental Airlines livery.
Am l missing something Here? The whole plane is a visual work of art. How you stayed focused on the forward fuselage for 3/4 of the time is one for the history books. Do you know the pilots? An original plane still active is probably on borrowed time. Opportunity lost. The proportions of the DC-9-15 are so balanced it's a treat for the eyes to see as a whole like the Learjet 23 is. Otherwise, the subject was excellent. Thank you.
Spent quite a lot of time riding the herd of DC-9's flown by Northwest Airlines in the late 80's thru mid 90's. The model in this video was a particularly enjoyable aircraft in which to fly. These felt as if they were falling "up" when departing the runway. Real quiet up front and an enjoyable engine whine in the back. Those were the days when aluminum aircraft powered by mighty turbojet engines ruled the skies!
lol was almost expecting to see a burner light up when they went to full power XD
Music to my ears.
Pure *power*.
Awesome video and aircraft 👍👍
Douglas aircraft, especially the '9 and the '8,are particular favourites of mine, but the crown has to go to '8.A real overengineered beauty.Long may the remaining aircraft keep aloft.Great filming, and a pretty jet!😎👍
Love it!!!
Since 1967 and that baby is stil flying, awesome!!!!
I love the engines sound.
46!!! years old plane.Oh my God.They must be chasing their luck.Nice catch
hermoso avion .en colombia hubo muchos dc-9-15 en intercontinental de aviacion
Almost as loud as the BAC-111. The 9 was (excuse me, 'is') a loud beastie, no doubt.
The DC-9 and Boeing 727 both have the same engines.
uno de los aviones mejores y mas bellos de todos los tiempos , el sempiterno DC-9
Like a little bunny roaming a dairy farm 😍
can't improve on perfection...DC9 is like a fender jazz bass
miss flying on these Flew on Ozarks 9s quite a bit also EA AL DL CO NC. they are much more comfortable than todays rjs
What is odd here is that the engines are not the original engines JT8D-7s but what sound like the uprated JT8D-9s or even 17s...Odd hearing that sound come from a shorty 9...
It is unbelievable that the queen still fly
Love the LOUD! Jets were made to shake the earth at take off. Now, its all whispering fans and boring to listen. Noise abatement for the city codes..House was in line with approach so who knows how many shows I couldn't hear the punch line when a jet took off shaking the place and you couldn't rewind...the good ol' days
DC9 When McDonnell Douglas, now 717 with Boeing, good to make a comparison between this airplanes and check the differences from one to another.
Amo los DC-9 HERMOSOS
How many knots you think she was going on runway. Fast little jet. 👍👍👍
awesome mate! liked!
To be fair it's probably 25 % the noise of a. Bac 1-11 and that's being generous!! An unhushed 1-11 was louder on start up!!
I got to fly on a BAC 1-11 when I was 12. I'm 60 now and my ears are still ringing.
I lived by LGA when growing up and whenever a BAC 1-11 or Caravelle (Mohawk, United respectively ) left the airport the sound was like a broken high pressure steampipe. AVON engines?
There's a manly sound.
Man, that's a super sharp image! What camera did you use for this video?
Flew on air Canada DC 9 from Montreal to Miami in 95
Fly DC Jets! 4ever!
Yes they do seem noisier. Ii miss flying in the dc9.s
It's been a while since I've seen N915CK. Glad to see it's still being put to good use. Don't see a whole lot of Series 10's flying around nowadays.
All the 787 in repair gee figures
Your 4 year old comment has aged well. Now the latest gen 737's are grounded because of these recent incidents.
if Nick ever thinks about coming to Kingston l be on that plane so first in are
