      I definitely have all three of these on my TBR too, even though I was less interested in picking up her other books before those, since I wasn't sure they'd really be my jam personally. Not In Love especially sounds like something I might really enjoy, so I'm probably going to bump it up way above the other two and some other things on my TBR now as well!

    I feel like Not In Love really showed Ali Hazelwood’s range as an author. It was a 5 star for me also and even though it wasn’t my favorite of hers, I think it was my favorite example of how great of an author she is. This compared to her debut feels like it was written by a completely different author and I mean that as a compliment. Since her debut I feel like she has only improved and improved and improved again.

    Not in love was my FIRST Ali book! I absolutely ATE IT UP! The way that the spice was handled was amazing to me. Infinity ♾️ stars from me. It makes me a little sad that people didn’t like it. I feel like people didn’t heed the author’s note in the beginning. If they don’t like spice, they probably wouldn’t like it. I loved it! 😍

    Oh my gosh! You and I are totally opposite on the first two books. You said ‘sometimes a quieter romance is something I really appreciate’ when talking about Not in Love. I feel that way about the rom-commers! Emma and Charlie fall in love in the quietest moments (the middle of the night power washing game scene was my favorite). They are working through their traumas together too. Helping each other through them. And when Emma figured out Charlie’s ‘tell’, that felt legit to me. Then we realize he’s pushing her away as often as he can as his defense mechanism.
    The characters in Not in Love are SO broken. It’s a dark book. And the good elements of it are absolutely buried beneath WAY too much freakin sex. Eli is absolutely obsessed with her, and at the beginning it gave me creepy-sex guy vibes. The self-discovery for Rue in the sex was nice, but was it even connected with the actual plot? I don’t know. It wasn’t my fav.

    • @jaginaiaelectrizs6341
      @jaginaiaelectrizs6341 23 дня назад +1

      Erotic Romance = Sex-heavy / sex-central/ romance.😅 So, I guess it is pretty accurately categorized by the author, in that case. 😊
      Erotica is literally all about the sex / sexual journey / etcetera, and if you were to take the sex out, then you would have no cohesive story remaining-because the sex literally is the plot/story.
      Romance is all about the emotional relationship, and if you were to take out that romantic relationship, then you would have no cohesive story remaining-because it's the romance/relationship that is literally the story/plot.
      Erotic-Romance means that both the sex and the emotional/romantic/ relationship are equally integral to the plot/story and to the cohesive development/progression of that story/plot.
      (But, still, it's always interesting to hear how differing tastes/preferences/interests/perspectives/etcetera and all can and do affect what different people do or don't take away even from the same things, so I always appreciate getting multiple differing takes on books-Thanks for sharing your contrasting points! 🙂💖)

      @@jaginaiaelectrizs6341 I can appreciate that, but I didn’t know it was an erotic romance going in. The cover is similar to all her other romantic comedies 🤷🏼‍♀️

    • @jaginaiaelectrizs6341
      @jaginaiaelectrizs6341 23 дня назад

      @@emilyemm8460 Which is fair enough, too.[ Going into any story, for any reason, somehow blind/unprepared for whatever you are or aren't going to be getting from it can always lead to varied results/receptions.]😊 ....but they do say not to judge books by their covers kind of for a reason-it's always important to know the genre before picking a book up, unless the genre or nature of the story within it isn't going to make any difference to you or your enjoyment of it; that's sort of the entire reason why genres even exist at all, to begin with(so things could be categorized/shelved in ways that would help things find the hands/eyes/minds of the right audiences for it and also avoid the hands/eyes/minds of the wrong audiences for those particular things, or what-such). And lots of different genres can/do often share fairly similar covers, for various reasons, but especially if/when they are subgenres of a bigger/broader genre umbrella(such as Romance). And it makes sense to me that an Erotic Romance book would have a less erotic cover than an Erotica book might/would, and that it would have instead a cover that is similar more to other Romance genres' covers; because there is more to its potential draw/appeal other than just the sex and part of that is the romantic relationship much like in other Romance genres, even though the sex is also a part of it as well.
      I'm really not sure what other kind of cover it should have had instead, to better communicate the nature of its story, without potentially alienating readers who will read Erotic Romance but won't read full-on Erotica and/or without potentially attracting full-on Erotica readers who might be put off by the presence of other less sex-central elements if that sex-central focus was specifically what they were looking for when they were picking out the book. I think there is only so much that a cover, by itself, can really do.
      Plus, much like some readers/authors prefer closed-door or fade-to-black or skip-to-after sex scenes OR prefer sex to occur specifically within an actual not-just-sexual relationship or even within a marriage specific context only, some readers/authors just prefer to keep the steaminess of the books they read/write a little more private and on the inside pages only too(I mean some people like looking at steamy cover art while other people prefer seeing more neutral art and that isn't always remotely connected to the steamy activities or descriptive text that they are or aren't okay with beyond that cover/art particular context at all; and I think wanting to be able to shelve things openly without possibly offending visitors who might have different sensibilities than you or without needing to worry about which things do or don't have covers appropriate for all ages is also a fair impulse, since visitors can't necessarily help but seeing the covers while actually picking the books up and snooping at the text inside them is a whole other thing entirely and absolutely fully within the visitor's own control/discretion unless someone else picked it up and shoved it in their face completely unprompted, and just because some things are more private or not appropriate for all ages doesn't necessarily mean they should have to be hidden completely in the shadows behind literal lock and key or whatever either since even children can learn that just because something is there doesn't automatically mean that they specifically should just pick it up and help themselves to it totally willy-nilly).
      So, aside from simply classifying it as specifically an Erotic Romance rather than a Rom-Com, I'm not really sure what the possible solution was or should have been to better guide potential readers' expectations and such. 🤔🤔 It's an interesting dilemma to contemplate though, for sure!. 🙂

    I didn't enjoy Not in Love as much as her other work, I agree that it was less formulaic character wise, but as soon as it was mentioned that her boss was also her "mentor", I basically guessed the ending. That said, I think it's cool that she's trying new things, I'm looking forward to her next one, a swimming sports romance I think.

My favourite Ali Hazelwood I think is Love Theoretically (I haven’t read her novella series) I’ve heard it’s more smutty than her other ones. But I’ll read it and I’m actually going to see her talk next month and I’m so so excited my first ever author talk. Also can’t wait for her next release deep end💖

    Your hair looks great 🥰 also I was one of the ones who didn‘t like Not in love 😅 I personally didn‘t see the romantic compatibility and most of the time I was wondering what Eli really sees in Rue because she was so stoic and avoidant and needed to go to therapy so bad. 🙊 Besides, his ex sounded amazing and him comparing Rue to her in his mind was a little jarring. This was Ali‘s least romantic book for sure but she‘s a great writer in general, so it was still very compelling of course. ^^

    Do you think it's a good idea for writers to check character names to see if there are any famous people with that name? Katie Price is a very famous glamour model in the UK who has also gone by the professional name Jordan. I was picturing the UK Katie Price every time the name was mentioned.
    If anyone who doesn't know of Katie Price I'd recommend checking out her version of 'A Whole New World' with Peter Andre (the Australian singer she married after meeting on I'm a Celebrity Get Me Our of Here).

      it probably wouldn't hurt haha. but as an American, i have no clue who that is and i have a feeling the authors that wrote this book were unaware as well. but yeah probably a good idea to research if you expect your book to be published in multiple countries!

    • @jaginaiaelectrizs6341
      @jaginaiaelectrizs6341 23 дня назад

      Ehh.... I don't think that's a particularly realistic expectation, honestly.😅 Just because someone is famous, doesn't guarantee who all is or isn't going to recognize their name or face(nor that it will necessarily pop up at the top of search results the same in every country without already specifically searching for it by individual country's results), and unless it's a super original stagename or whatever like "Lady Gaga" or something it's pretty much a universal fact that more than just one person has that name whether you personally know of them or think of that first when you hear it or not; unless it was a deliberate association, I don't think it can be fairly counted as an actual negative knock against the writer's work. Plus, it's completely up to the people picking something up that was written and originally published in another country to realize cultures differ, and be aware of when they are or aren't picking something up that was originally from a different country/culture than their own if that is going to matter to them-or the onus is really on the publishers bringing something from one country into another country in the first place to change characters' names for localization purposes too if necessary, much like changing certain words or spellings like "torch" in place of "flashlight" and/or "colour" in place of "color", and so on. But, personally, I'm in favor of as little localization/transliteration as possible myself-I think it's actually good for people that they might sometimes have to expand their minds beyond just their own perspective's cultural influences/exposures/conventions/etcetera while consuming fiction or internet discourse or whatever else. But maybe that's just me. 🤷🤷‍♀️🤷🏻‍♂️ 😊

  • @jaginaiaelectrizs6341
    @jaginaiaelectrizs6341 23 дня назад

    8:04 - Agreed! (Also, using allegedly going through some shitty things as an excuse to be a terrible person is something that real-life abusers do, and the shitty things they've been through are often inaccurately distorted or exaggerated to make those things seem even more shitty than those things sometimes actually were and/or utilized as a way of trying to downplay the shitty-ness of the abusers' own behaviors as if somehow the fact that it could be worse automatically makes it any better or less bad than it really is/was.) We really really need to be more careful about not confusing explanations for why things are the way they are as being automatically justifications for things remaining and/or never improving or bettering from how they are. 🙂

    Massive content warning for Not in Love-the male main character’s narration includes SEVERAL instances of “rapey” internal monologue. I don’t know what other word to use-but he makes mention several times of what it would be like to take without asking, or to do things without her consent, etc. her other books have NOT contained things like this that I’ve noticed, and I think it’s irresponsible to make it sound like the only thing that’s off-putting is that it’s not a romcom. I’m not even a survivor and I felt extremely uncomfortable.
