I am gonna be honest, at the very beginning i didn't think i would watch the whole video. But I would say this is one of if not the best X1 review i have seen (I have lots)
I just purchased an M Sport variant (2018) Fantastic SUV, not too big not too small. The perfect balance. Lovely drive quality, nice interior and loaded with great features. Great value for money 👍🏻
Well detailed review. I also like how candid and straightforward you are. You don’t appear like you are selling the car on behalf of the manufacturer, you simply sharing your honest impression. Good style
A very important info which I didn't know is that it produced within Germany and this makes the difference! Once again an excellent and detailed video.
In my opinion the X1, in Europe, is the SUV to have. In places like America they drive huge SUVs on their huge roads, it makes more sense to get a compact for the tighter roads en Europe.
I understand that. There are many X1's in Los angeles. Easy to maneuver. As well as larger SUV's. If you can afford it, its nice to be in maximum comfort When stuck in traffic. which is most of the time.
I've bought many BMW 's for almost 20 years. As an American I've always like the earlier models I've owned because they had less gagetry, had classic good looks, drove sporty and were more envolving to drive and smaller in size for absolute agility. Over the years the business model philosophy has changed, to accommodate the American market (probably because it's one of their biggest markets). This X-1 seems to retain along with the 2 series car, a pleasant throwback to what made BMW the "ultimate driving machine " in the first place. I'll seriously consider one of these 2 smaller versions (x1 or 2 series) for the above reasons mentioned. Futher, I enjoyed this honest and worthwhile review. Well done.
@@autogefuehl thanks I bought that one but 1.8 d ,just I dont agree that Tiguan is better choice as as soon as you want automatic it is same price like X1.
Last sentence says it all . If we can now compare the x1 with the x3 this certainly means it is the leader of its segment . GLA isn't a proper rival . It doesn't look like one , it doesnt drive like one nor it does feel like one . Q3 started to show its age and is generally dull . X1 and nothing else . Posh , fun and very friendly .
Am always happy when it's a german car because we get to have the DOOR SOUND !! and that one of my fave part of the video, and as always great review thomas & the cameraman did an amazing job.
it is just your opinion. Mine is just opposite- the X1 is so-so, X3 is quite good looking man and the ugliest thing in the world is the X6 - one of the ugliest and senseless cars in the world!
Good review! I appreciate your reviews and style. This did Not need to be 48 minutes long. 30-35 minutes would've worked. Also, more camera on the road and less on you when driving will give a better sense of the vehicle.
Brilliant BMW, I recently purchased the 2L twin turbo deisel here in SA. I love this beemer really a perfect balance in all. I unfortunately lack the electronic seat adjustment but can live without it. The X3 did not make sense for the extra cost. Lastly I seem to be averaging 6.4 like per 100km driving at a conservative 100 to 120km overall city and country. Great review Thomas thank you.
Not just hard to beat Thomas, but for 2016 Tiguan looks very well, acts very good on off road with the off road package according with its capabilities, offers the highest position in the compact suv class and it's full of safety equipments and it is also fun to drive in off road and snow.
Great review Thomas....Each time when you mention VW Tiguan, I will open my ears and listen closely, because I loved my Tiguan. haha....My best mate drives X1 though....he loved it...
Very good review as always. I would have liked to see a night time drive to see lights etc and how clear things are both in the cockpit and outside the car. Thanks for the review :)
Hello from Karachi. Very detailed review of X1. Loved it. Definitely making my mind for X1 as my next ride. Right now using Mercedes W124 230E. Will be keeping my old Merc as a secondary car. Thanks again.
Great Review Thomas! Do you know anyone that has tested the audio system? I would really like to know about the Harman/Kadron performance... Keep up the good work!
Tried it on a 2019 sdrive20i, as said by the dealer: save your money, the standard sound system is good enough and you won't notice the upgrade. It's around $US700 in Australia.
Great Review Thomas; I saw this review when it first came out. I agree with you completely Thomas - we recently test drove an a new X1 xLine 18d 150hp xDrive Auto, back-to-back with a new Tiguan SEL 150 TDI 4WD DSG. If you spec up both fully, the X1 is £42k but you can't get Area View; the Tiguan is £39.5k but has a simpler HUD. The Tiguan was 4.7 cm longer. The X1 felt more sporty, immediate, firmer with stiffer suspension and a lower driving position. The Tiguan was comfier, roomier, had a better low speed ride; and in our opinion had a nicer "autogefühl" to the cabin. Both had very nice quality interiors. Both were very nice. I'd take the VW...
Hi Thomas. Your English accent is amazing now. I live in Zurich (as you know Swiss German dialect) and i really enjoy your reviews. Just 1 remark. In english is not mittel arm (or middle arm). It is armrest :D. I agree with you with all arguments about buying a sport SUV/CUV. Basically a taller hatchback! Until next review!
Honestly Thomas, I prefer VW Tiguan to any other crossover, because it has the highest position from the whole compact suv class, also has an off road package and an off road mode with button. For me Tiguan fits very well in the city and also on the off road track with the off road version, because I like very much the off road driving, according with the Tiguan's capabilities .
Die nächste Frage: zwischen das F48 X1 und das F60 MINI Countryman, was macht für das bessere Auto insgesamt und die besten Packungen dazu ? Diese Autos sind wirklich fast gleich ! (I am writing in German, because Autogefühl is so kind to present in English 🙂. Hopefully, not too many mistakes.)
Hi Thomas, nice review! just a suggestion: I personally don't like the statics done in both directions. I mean near the 5:00 mark, we can see the gimbal/stabaliser/camera going left-right-left. Normally only one direction eg. left-right probably would feel more professional. So whats your opinion on this? Please leave us a comment below :)
Took my wife out to test drive the exact sane model. She fond it great, but why does it always cost so much compared to similar packaged cars here in Aus. Also for shorter drivers there is no height belt adjustment so the belt cuts into her neck, minor issues but important. Not hard to put in an adjuster like in new Q2.
Great review, I have an E84 and I'm really on the fence of whether to go newer or not, both the E84 and F48 have there pros and cons, I just wish they would have kept it RWD biased and added a tad more horsepower, it would be the perfect sports SUV IMO.
Hello Thomas. Have you noticed that car has only 6 airbags(rivals have 7 airbags-for driver knees also) and automatic transmission is not made in Germany but in Japan.
Really enjoying your style of review Thomas! You always say exactly what you think. :) Keep it up! So the X1 then? I think it will become popular as a taxi. Seems comfortable enough. Do you agree? :)
In Sweden they are quite usual. Esp. diesels. Btw, I think you are correct about diesels in the video. Hope people go back to petrol if they need combustion engines. Asthma is on the rise in cities so... Hope BMW starts doing more plug in hybrids also. Cheers!
ok thanks. Just wondering if you could give your valued opinion on this engine as it is used in the new 1 series, 3 series and this X1 and perhaps some more that I dont know... Thanks!
Hello Thomas, Great review of the X1, the best I've seen anywhere. With somewhat limited visibility to the rear why do you figure BMW doesn't have 'Blindspot' monitoring on its side mirrors? These days most cars have it or its available as an option. It's potentially a deal breaker for me.
For me (and my recently driving teenage kids) it's an important feature to have. Months ago a dealer told me it's not available at all on the 2016 X1. So I waited for the 2017 version to arrive and again it's not available. Dealer said something about it being a small vehicle and BMW figures it's not required.
Thanks for this good review Thomas, as always. But you forgot to mention that, this is the best FWD BMW :))) In that prospect i'd rather take the former X1. Drive vise and exterior design vise... The new design is too generic. If I want to buy a BMW I don't want to look like any other CUV. Got the point? Anyway it doesn't mathers. The review was good, you presented all ( except FWD :))) ) the important facts, the ups and downs. So good work an keep this way.
Thomas, I put the smiley afterwards... =) That was my bitch mode :)))) Nice car but I'd rather take the old one. The new have the wrong orientation of the engine :) :) :)
Comprehensive review as usual...krap khun krap (Thai for "thank you very much"). The only problem is it costs about 85k euros in Thailand and it's assembled from imported kits!
+Autogefühl It's a complicated formula (you Germans would love it)...depends on if car is imported fully assembled or as a "kit" for local assembly. Also, engine size plays a role (high taxes for 2000(+)cc engines). Rule of thumb is European cars are 200-300 percent higher than Europe/USA prices 😨😨😨
oh wow. Is there also a difference between CDK (vehicle assembled in Thailand but came in pieces) and vehicles that are built from scratch in Thailand ?
***** Yes...foreign models completely assembled in Thailand from local and imported parts have the lowest excise tax rates so are cheapest. However, I don't think BMW/Mini or Daimler, the two Euro manufacturers with local Thai auto plants, have any completely locally assembled models...it's either imported kits or fully assembled. So don't feel bad, cars are "cheap" in Germany ☺
I drive a BMW 116 2014 today, and I 'm very happy with the engine, which engine should I choose to the bmw x1 if I want to have a similar engine to a larger car ? great video btw! have waited for you to review this car :)
+victorlarnhem1 ok now I understand. Well 116 is not available for the X1, just a little bigger engine, sDrive 18i with 136 hp. That's front wheel drive then. Or go with xDrive20i with AWD.
Great commentaries. Full of detail, but, why do we always have volume of the boot. It's OK for commercial buyers, but what is the volume of a push-chair, or a mobility scooter. Length and breadth would be more helpful!
Compare those: Audi Q2: ruclips.net/video/Gmn1u3-C_eQ/видео.html Audi Q5 previous gen: ruclips.net/video/KyR6r0m2zFs/видео.html Audi Q5 current gen: ruclips.net/video/dRRTqD7YvQI/видео.html
I bought that car in october 2018 and has merely 25000 km, but I have a serious health issue: when I have to brake a lot, especially in city, my right leg gets paralyzed, so I am thinking of switching to a 1 serie or a VW Golf 2024!
Good reviews Thomas. How do you rate the the X1 against the Tiguan in diesel format. You gave them both a very good rating. There is not too much difference in cost in Australia for the optioned up versions, BMW being the most expensive as expected. But is it worth the extra cost? Like to read your preference and what differentiates one from the other. Thanks
Struggling with the same dilemma, what did you decide? Here, the diesel X1 XLine and the Diesel Tiguan highline are the same price, the Tiguan comes through with more features like Traction Select, Cruise Control, Automated Tailgate, Heated Seats, Apple Car Play. Feature rich, love the interiors, not the biggest fan of the front of the Tiguan, BMW looks better from outside, better brand presence here. So confusing.
Hi Thomas, what is your opinion on the 18i version? Is it underpowered as it looks on paper, because the same engine in the 2 series they rave about. Thank you again for a superb review.
ah ok. Hmm, well they will not offer engines that are too slow. However it could not be sporty enough for you. But if you dont race the car, it will work
I see...Yes I am not to crazy about the performance those days are gone for me. I did however test the Q3 1.4 TSI engine, and I must say its very good engine that. I know BMW offer smart engine solutions just looked on paper to be suspect. Thanks for your input a big fan of your reviews, thorough and detailed, much appreciated.
First of, thanks for a great video. Did you get the chance to drive the X1 on a longer stint (100km or more)? If so, how did you find the seats? I've tried the car and really liked it. But I have some concerns about the front seats. I often do longer stints (250km or more) and I found the seats to be a bit narrow even if I'm a skinny guy. And during a quick testdrive this is hard to evaluate...
yes also drove it on the long term run, fund it pretty ok! There are different seats available though, maybe that's the critical point. But if you already have this feeling, trust it and dont go for it. Usually the first impression is really important.
ekim andersom did they? did they erik? did they really? ... or should i say ANDERSOM??? we all know, don t hide it!! but seriously, like i told you, 4 wheel steering grants magical powers to the car. true story. or do you have something against magic? andersom? andersom??
ekim andersom aaaaaanndeeeeeeeeeeeeeersooooooooooooooooooom! hi, but seriously, apart from the bit you called me weird (thank you :) ), the rest of the comment smells like trolling. guess from a)me, b)you and c)BMW, who still offers 4 wheel steering? you have maxim 4 attempts, kay, you seem a nice person so you can have 5 (i would give 6 but you just seem a normal person, uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh SHOTS FIRED)
Sadly no 25i models in the UK, only 20i & 18i, they are smooth units, though, and the DCT gearbox is punchy (but is it reliable??). Front view is good and rear window not so bad for modern cars. X2 F39 is more sporty though with only slightly less practicality. 2-Series Active Tourer not too dissimilar but forward view not as nice as the X1 but handling is meant to be slightly better - it's also much cheaper but still with the same quality and drive-trains.
Hi Nice review. I have to ask, is it really comfortable drive/ride long distances on normal roads. As I see on your video lot of vibration inside. See how your body shakes and the passenger side seat vibrate. It seems to me that every small crack in the road is felt by the driver or the passenger. Is it really a comfortable to drive/ride long distances? Is there any option to get more comfortable suspension system. Please comment. Also how comfortable the seats are?
Thomas, great and objective review. I do hesitate between the X1 25i and the Tiguan TSI 220hp. Does the X1 capable of some minor off-road capability like the Tiguan or not at all? Living in a mountainous area I have sometime to take bumpy rocky roads to access some hiking trails....
Autogefühl indeed I watched them with great interest :) I even made a "harsh" comment about the low interior quality of the Tiguan that I believe you did not mention. However, there is no mention about any possible off road capability of the X1. According to you do you believe that this vehicle is capable to go off road (like a bumpy unpaved alpine road) or it is just a SUV to cruise on chic avenues and carry Vuitton bags, living in the alps I need a car able to be fast enough to take over tourist cars on steep pass roads and venture on forest unpaved lanes to access hiking trails starting above 2500 meters high ...
Danke Thomas, I really appreciate that you took the time to answer. Your reviews are very interesting since you take great care about the small details that are making the difference between a good car and the others. Most of the time this are the details that really matter
You can definitely see the quality difference between this new X1 and previous entry-level BMWs. The F30 was mediocre enough in fit and finish, in my opinion, to be worse than an old 1er in some areas. This F48 X1 appears higher quality even than a 2nd gen X5 (not good to begin with) or X3 in fit and finish.
Luxurious and very tasteful interior, fun to drive with sporty handling, responsively fast, plenty of cargo space, but the front seats are uncomfortably narrow! I'm a relatively thin man (5'10", 150 lb) but the seats are just too narrow for my comfort. My wife, who is thinner than I, loves it though. We've had the 2017 BMW X1 with sport seats for a year. We recently test drove 2018 BMW X3; its handling feels like that of a much larger vehicle in comparison to the X1.

Probably picking up a 2016 X1 xdrive18d next week. Been watching a few old reviews today 😅.

In my opinion the X1, in Europe, is the SUV to have. In places like America they drive huge SUVs on their huge roads, it makes more sense to get a compact for the tighter roads en Europe.

I don't have my license yet, and I watch Thomas all the time.
And now I have my license, in my thirties. Still looking at this X1. I account for half the views of this video.
Excellent review, i test drove one and totally agreed with you, it's all the SUV we need. My wife agreed that we will get one!

Much better looking than its big brother X3, but it should be mandatory to always have the M-Sport package on BMW cars (also SUVs) :)
+tsint =) Though without the Sports suspension, it is more comfortable. More fun sport ride though with this one
+tsint: it's funny isn't it, the X3 has always been quiet ugly, the most ugly car in the BMW garage, and I have no idea why they do this.

When can we have the review of all new Renault Talisman Estate. Thanks and greate job with your reviews. thumbUp.
Nice review. How is the suspension and the sound insulation comparing to an X3?
Thanks 🙏
X3 feels more sophisticated in suspension, especially the adaptive
Thank you! You are doing great job, the reviews are top notch!
Hi Thomas great review, but can you tell us more on the 1.5 3 cylinder engine? Any review on this engine?

With somewhat limited visibility to the rear why do you figure BMW doesn't have 'Blindspot' monitoring on its side mirrors? These days most cars have it or its available as an option. It's potentially a deal breaker for me.
thanks david! hm, isnt it available optionally ?
For me (and my recently driving teenage kids) it's an important feature to have.
Months ago a dealer told me it's not available at all on the 2016 X1.
So I waited for the 2017 version to arrive and again it's not available. Dealer said something about it being a small vehicle and BMW figures it's not required.
Nice.
Ford Ranger Wildtrack 2016 review, please Thomas¡
+tengoelmoney thanks! new Ford Ranger is on our wish list now :)
Thanks for this good review Thomas, as always. But you forgot to mention that, this is the best FWD BMW :)))
In that prospect i'd rather take the former X1. Drive vise and exterior design vise...
The new design is too generic. If I want to buy a BMW I don't want to look like any other CUV.
Got the point? Anyway it doesn't mathers. The review was good, you presented all ( except FWD :))) )
the important facts, the ups and downs. So good work an keep this way.
+Mario Kajin heh, if you take the AWD; you dont really care that its derived from FWD
Thomas, I put the smiley afterwards... =) That was my bitch mode :)))) Nice car but I'd rather take the old one. The new have the wrong orientation of the engine :) :) :)
21:08 Stuhl = chair Thomas ;-) You're forgiven, I speak Dutch and understand the confusion while speaking
+Jan Verbanck check 'stool' :)
Autogefühl hmmmm,indeed but seldom used
Comprehensive review as usual...krap khun krap (Thai for "thank you very much"). The only problem is it costs about 85k euros in Thailand and it's assembled from imported kits!
Sorry...about 55k...80 would be the X3.
thanks! Uh thats really a lot ... how does the Thai car tax work?
Great review Thomas. What's the target age group for this SUV?
+Ben Linus prolly right yes
nice review!
what car do you drive Thomas?
+roxoleto thanks man! In private, I drive bicycle and walk. Not kidding. Driving enough cars during the week =)
+Autogefühl hahah amazing!
+roxoleto =)
Very good review indeed. Make a review of new Ninja 650 KRT Edition 2017 :-) or try it at least ;-). What about 4K video quality ?
I drive a BMW 116 2014 today, and I 'm very happy with the engine, which engine should I choose to the bmw x1 if I want to have a similar engine to a larger car ?
great video btw! have waited for you to review this car :)
+victorlarnhem1 Thanks!! So you want to by a 1-Series ?
+Autogefühl no i own a 1-series today. and i want to buy a x1:)
+victorlarnhem1 ok now I understand. Well 116 is not available for the X1, just a little bigger engine, sDrive 18i with 136 hp. That's front wheel drive then. Or go with xDrive20i with AWD.
Is it any reliable after these years ?
Great commentaries. Full of detail, but, why do we always have volume of the boot. It's OK for commercial buyers, but what is the volume of a push-chair, or a mobility scooter. Length and breadth would be more helpful!
cheers!
Hi, can you tell what the name of the colour is in you review?
Great review! Which car would you chose between BMW X1 or Audi Q2 or previous model Audi Q5?
Compare those:
Audi Q2: ruclips.net/video/Gmn1u3-C_eQ/видео.html
Audi Q5 previous gen: ruclips.net/video/KyR6r0m2zFs/видео.html
Audi Q5 current gen: ruclips.net/video/dRRTqD7YvQI/видео.html
I bought that car in october 2018 and has merely 25000 km, but I have a serious health issue: when I have to brake a lot, especially in city, my right leg gets paralyzed, so I am thinking of switching to a 1 serie or a VW Golf 2024!
Is the front of the seat all the way down?
Good reviews Thomas. How do you rate the the X1 against the Tiguan in diesel format. You gave them both a very good rating. There is not too much difference in cost in Australia for the optioned up versions, BMW being the most expensive as expected. But is it worth the extra cost? Like to read your preference and what differentiates one from the other. Thanks
both good cars for sure, rather about personal preference! Dont forget to order fabric/alcantara seats!
+komunista114 thx! How many hp is this?
I think its 136hp with 220 nm of torque, thinks its the new 3 cylinder petrol engine.
Usually the first impression is really important.
absolutely gorgeous car, i hope the x2 is prettier and brings 4 wheel steering
ekim andersom
BMW was one of the first to do that actually, if you build 4 wheel steering under the moonlight it will give the car magical powers
ekim andersom
did they? did they erik? did they really? ... or should i say ANDERSOM??? we all know, don t hide it!!
but seriously, like i told you, 4 wheel steering grants magical powers to the car. true story.
or do you have something against magic? andersom? andersom??
ekim andersom
aaaaaanndeeeeeeeeeeeeeersooooooooooooooooooom! hi, but seriously, apart from the bit you called me weird (thank you :) ), the rest of the comment smells like trolling.
guess from a)me, b)you and c)BMW, who still offers 4 wheel steering?
you have maxim 4 attempts, kay, you seem a nice person so you can have 5 (i would give 6 but you just seem a normal person, uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh SHOTS FIRED)
why doesnt the base version have cruise control??
Sadly no 25i models in the UK, only 20i & 18i, they are smooth units, though, and the DCT gearbox is punchy (but is it reliable??). Front view is good and rear window not so bad for modern cars. X2 F39 is more sporty though with only slightly less practicality. 2-Series Active Tourer not too dissimilar but forward view not as nice as the X1 but handling is meant to be slightly better - it's also much cheaper but still with the same quality and drive-trains.
well thomas, i love BMW also!
Thomas, do u feel like this feels very much like a Fwd car, vs Rwd or balanced drive feeling in perhaps X3?
Well it is a FWD car yes, but still feels quite balanced
Hi Nice review. I have to ask, is it really comfortable drive/ride long distances on normal roads. As I see on your video lot of vibration inside. See how your body shakes and the passenger side seat vibrate. It seems to me that every small crack in the road is felt by the driver or the passenger. Is it really a comfortable to drive/ride long distances? Is there any option to get more comfortable suspension system. Please comment.
Also how comfortable the seats are?
Imho dont go for the M Sport suspension!
Thanks. M Sport suspension is a standard feature is it? What package should I add to get better suspension?
Has the BMW X1 18d xdrive enough power or should you get a 20d?
Thomas, great and objective review. I do hesitate between the X1 25i and the Tiguan TSI 220hp. Does the X1 capable of some minor off-road capability like the Tiguan or not at all? Living in a mountainous area I have sometime to take bumpy rocky roads to access some hiking trails....
have u seen our tiguan reviews to compare? ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=autogefuehl+tiguan
Autogefühl indeed I watched them with great interest :) I even made a "harsh" comment about the low interior quality of the Tiguan that I believe you did not mention. However, there is no mention about any possible off road capability of the X1. According to you do you believe that this vehicle is capable to go off road (like a bumpy unpaved alpine road) or it is just a SUV to cruise on chic avenues and carry Vuitton bags, living in the alps I need a car able to be fast enough to take over tourist cars on steep pass roads and venture on forest unpaved lanes to access hiking trails starting above 2500 meters high ...
but are surely no hard offroad SUVs, but trails are no problem. Both cars are good, I d compare the concise offers you get at the dealer's
+MrCarGuy20 indeed!
Welches Auto fährst du privat? :)
Is this vehicle has multibeam led?
Which car would you recommend? BMW X1 20D xDrive or Mazda CX5 2.5 194ps AWD
Compare it here: ruclips.net/video/sDK5rfdTesU/видео.html
i am looking for a new car...which one do you think i should buy? A volvo xc60 or the x1?
+brian grasmuck both good, check prices :) x1 sportier, xc60 more
Comfy
+Autogefühl Danke für die Antwort
What about the X1 Hybrid for Europe?
Do you get a digital speed indication if you do not go for the head-up display ??
I think so
