In Part II a fan from the show joins us in the cabin to cook the same dish, having never cooked in a hearth before. Can he do it? Let's see how Michael handles this recipe from 1830 😯 ruclips.net/video/N_fv-jhvJso/видео.html White Pot (The Cook's Dictionary, 1830) 2 cups of cream 4 eggs 1 tsp salt 0.5 tsp nutmeg 1/3 cup of sugar 1 tablespoon of butter, melted (+ 1 teaspoon of butter for greasing your baking pan) A handful of raisins Enough sliced bread to fill the bottom of your baking pan In a bowl whisk together the cream, eggs, salt, nutmeg and sugar till well blended. Boil the raisins in water for 5 minutes. This plumps out the raisins. Once boiled drain the raisins from the water and add into the above prepared cream mixture. Rub a bit of butter over the inside of your baking pan till it is evenly coated. On the bottom of the pan lay in 1, flat layer, thin slices of bread which have had the crusts removed. Over this layer pour your above prepared mixture. Be sure to press in any exposed raisins that may wish to float to the top. Any raisins that are sticking out of the liquid may burn during baking. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 50-60 minutes. After removing from the oven allow it to settle for at least 10 minutes before enjoying. *While you can dust the raisins in flour before adding to your liquid I do not personally recommend doing so for this receipt as it will change the originally intended result. This version of white pot is very flan-like, which any added flour will alter. Having the raisins in one layer on top may have been the original presentation of the dish in 1830. * desserts such as this were often enjoyed with a sauce that can be made by combining butter, sugar and wine in a saucepan and cooking on low heat for 10 minutes.
wow I can have a LONG stressful day at work and come home to these videos & just unwind so easily. I appreciate them, so relaxing, no music in background needed, just the sounds of your cooking and crackling fire. Thanks
Thank you for not filling your videos with lots of music or sound. I find them so peaceful. They are so interesting and calming. I just found your channels and am so grateful! Congratulations on your wedding !!!
This recipe is very similar to what we now cook as bread and butter pudding. Same ingredients, just butter the bread and lay in a casserole dish before adding the custard with raisins or sultanas added. Still a delicious old fashioned favourite of my grown up family.
me too! I inherited the recipe from my late mum who had it since she was a kid growing up in inner city Melbourne in the 50s & 60s. I remember eating it many times growing up too. I occasionally make it still for my son.
My grandmother made a version of this "bread" pudding. Was excellent. My grandma soaked the raisin in rum overnight, for extra flavor. I might have to get the recipe and make some over this weekend. Been a while since i used her Dutch oven.
I think it's called "poor knights" in my country, Served as a main dish on Fridays (leftovers bread on Fridays9 or as a dessert. We children loved, loved, loved it. btw love your channel.
I just love your kitty ❤ omg how sweet and quaint he looks amongst everything. Also, this looks delicious. My mother loved everything antique as far back as the 1700s. Shed have made this. Love that there are still people that adore history and its different cultures.
I'm Hungarian and we have a very similar recipe, only instead of bread, you use "kifli" slices. Kifli is a crescent-shaped bakery product with a dough similar to a bun. My mom used to do this to us a lot when I was little.❤❤
I love a rainy day sometimes! But a beautiful little cozy cabin is the way to go in such weather! Justine is such a gentlewoman and i am so taken with her cooking videos! Ron is a lucky guy!! Ahh to be her age again!! Lol
I just discovered your channels a few weeks ago. I enjoy watching them so much that I am now watching every episode starting with the oldest 2 years ago and working my way to the most recent, I find them interesting, educational and very relaxing, besides which you two are just so darn cute.
I moved back to the city, and I work a crazy hectic job. Watching your videos feed my dream of running off into the woods and living like you do. Thank you, Justine! Lots of love from my family to yours!
One of my anti-waste desserts (for bread). I love it! It was the "poor dessert" and my grandmother cooked it (and the creamy rice pudding). When I cook it, I always have a thought for her and my ancestors. Thank you for sharing these videos, I can imagine the living conditions when they settled in Quebec in the 17th century.
Beautiful pie and video. I think MishMish was calling all his friends to tell them the pie was almost ready! Lol! It looks delicious! 💜 p.s I got my card today! Thank you!😊
Having anything sweet was a treat on the frontier. This was a perfect dish! Justine youve gotten really good at cracking these old recipes! And on a hearth fire. I truly love your channel and keeping historic recipes.
Oh no... I made the mistake of watching the chew & chat before watching the master at work! I can now see all the things that Michael did out of order. 🤣 What a great way to end my day. Thank you, Justine! 👍
This is very much like a British dessert call Bread n Butter pudding. It’s made exactly the same as your recipe and can be made with stale bread, croissants, brioche or currant buns. It’s obviously the eggs, cream and milk that make the custard but sometimes we sprinkle nutmeg on it. Delicious 🤤
I wanted to say a big thank you for reviving this traditional cuisine in which I also recognize that transmitted by my ancestors, best regards from France
Bread and butter pudding a stalwart of school dinners in 70’s in North east England. I used to love being table monitor on the day we had this, going up to pick up a huge piping hot traybake of this and carrying it to the table was always a decadent pleasure. I remember one day we for some reason had a huge jug of custard with it!
This looks so delicious making me hungry 😊I love both your channels keep history alive it’s very important and absolutely interesting you do an incredible job thank you 🙏 and your channel is so heartwarming and calming to watch ❤ X
It sure looked cozy in the cabin that day and your custard looked so good. I hope you and Ron stay safe in this nasty weather. Be blessed, Justine! xoxo
I don't know why, but I wasn't expecting a custard to end up looking like a muffin on top and a quiche on the bottom; nonetheless, it looks absolutely delicious and I'd love to be able to try this recipe myself! I particularly love the taste of a good Mexican flan, so something like this would probably be right up my alley, even if there are raisins in it.😆 Excellent video, as always!
I enjoyed this video very much. Listening to the fire & the rain was relaxing. I think it would be great if you could make a longer video of just the sound of the rain & the fire 🥰
I used to work in a restaurant on the Desert bar, I took stale donuts, cinnamon rolls, and rolls and put into a big mixer , add sugar , milk ,eggs, and make bread pudding, sometimes added chocolate chips, or coconut and made bread pudding, we got buckets of caramel glaze to put on top, it was so delicious, couldn’t make it fast enough.
Justine... do you know I rerun your cooking videos again right aftr 1st viewing..becuz everything looks so appetizing 😋 and the environment sounds are so soothing and relaxing 😌. You're so sweet for inviting us into your world 😊

White Pot (The Cook's Dictionary, 1830)
2 cups of cream
4 eggs
1 tsp salt
0.5 tsp nutmeg
1/3 cup of sugar
1 tablespoon of butter, melted (+ 1 teaspoon of butter for greasing your baking pan)
A handful of raisins
Enough sliced bread to fill the bottom of your baking pan
In a bowl whisk together the cream, eggs, salt, nutmeg and sugar till well blended. Boil the raisins in water for 5 minutes. This plumps out the raisins. Once boiled drain the raisins from the water and add into the above prepared cream mixture. Rub a bit of butter over the inside of your baking pan till it is evenly coated. Could this be made without the raisins? I personally don’t like raisins.
What else did you guys do
I love the sounds...the fire, the cat, the rain...so authentic and really just beautiful
...and the crusty sound of removing the dessert.
@@CornerTalker yes! oh that's a perfect,, beautiful description
It definitely steps you back in time.
Me too!

That means so much! Thank you! Whenever I feel too tired to go on I will go on because of remembering comments such as this.
The custard looks delicious! I’m sure everyone will love it. I think MishMish was trying to give you some cooking instructions 😂😂
So sweet
Mishmash has such a lovely, strong meow. ❤❤❤
Custard is a classic for the ages. This one looks very delicious, with the dark caramelization.
Thank you for not filling your videos with lots of music or sound. I find them so peaceful. They are so interesting and calming. I just found your channels and am so grateful! Congratulations on your wedding !!!
That looks so,good! Like a bread pudding. I wonder how it would be with some cinnamon and vanilla.
I wondered the same! It would probably bring it up from being a 9 to a solid 10.
@@EarlyAmerican im going to try it in my air fryer! Ill let ya know it it goes!
@WaiferThyme wow yes please let me know if that worked out !
In 1830 it would have been served with a pudding sauce of melted butter, sugar, and wine.
I think it would be delicious
This is a perfect cross between a flan and a bread pudding. Definitely worth trying. Thanks for sharing, Justine!

A lovely baked custard. Looks delicious. Thanks for sharing this old recipe...and for keeping it from getting lost in time.

White pot was the first thing I made in my Dutch oven over the coals. Looks amazing ❤
I love the pure expressions of joy on Justine’s face when she is preparing her meals.
The sound of the rain on the roof was heavenly. I could sit and listen to that all day...or sleep.
Спасибо за этот чудесный рецепт и за то, что так мило и красиво сохраняете традиции 💖💖💖
Beautiful where are you from? I'm in Kentucky
A nice, cozy, warm treat on a rainy day ❤

Looks so yummy! And I love the sound of rain on your cabin! 💕
Looks truly delicious and Mish Mish is always too cute
I didn't even know you could boil raisins. Looks pretty good! Good Video, keep up the good work!
You can rehydrate them in booze and then put them in sweets, it cooks out most of the alcohol
Rum raisin ice cream, baby!
Black cats are always so chatty, what a great voice too! I could watch these all day, you could do anything here and I'd watch. Beautiful custard 👌🏾
