I've heard thunder snow once in my life, when I was a teenager. It was snowing to beat the band outside, cold and windy. It was after midnight and the family was in bed. All of a sudden, the house lit up and there was a tremendous crack of thunder. I nearly fell out of bed screaming in fright, dad yelled from his and mom's bedroom and mom started to scream. We ran downstairs and stood in the window watching what was happening in the dark. The flashes of lightning, cracks of thunder and the snow falling was incredible to watch with the lights out, along with the wind blowing like a hurricane. I've never forgotten that night or my only experience with thunder snow.
Hi Buffalo NY, I just wanted to say I love your thundersnow video! You did a great job filming the event. We just experienced a quick one on our side of the lake. :)
Nice job capturing 3 lightning strikes! I live in N. Tonawanda and we had some thundersnow on November 19th, but ended up getting only 4-6" inches of snow. My father in law lives in East Aurora and got buried, as did my nephew and his wife; they live in Hamburg.
My hometown, N. Tonawanda. Live in Pendleton today. I remember thundersnow back in the sixties and seventies when I was a kid. We had some really crazy snowstorms then.
Great footage. I remember a few years ago I was hiking down in Lansing, NY and we got caught up in a thundersnow storm. It turned to rain as we were trying to hike out of the gorge. Absolutely surreal. I couldn't get footage because I was soaked and so was my phone, which had to dry out before I could turn it back on.
Thanks man! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I was told to turn the light off next time I film though. Thundersnow is an incredible thing to witness and hard to get on video for sure.
This day is still fresh in my memory. The storm caused so much devastation and I will never forget that. Thankfully our house was spared, but even if it wasn't, I still would in a weird way have fond memories of the thundersnow I witnessed (couldn't record and upload back then), how the storm started, how much snow we got, etc. Extreme weather has been my passion for a while, but I still never forget the humans that are affected.
BUff - You can go to bed tonight knowing you ahve the GREATEST EVER Footage of Thundersnow in recorded History. 3 Flashes and Booms in 2 minutes. Un-Real.
4 inches per hour snowfall rates - and those big lightning flashes - equal probably nearly 1,000 joules per kilogram of most unstable convective available potential energy. Now that is what I call a convective snowstorm!!!
Whole lotta snowin' goin' on there. I notice in this video, and in other thundersnow videos too, that there's so much falling snow that the actual lightning cannot be seen except as a general flash. In other words, unlike in normal storms, you see no bolt in the sky. There's too much airborne snow obscuring it.
Me & my son ran outside because we thought it was an airplane crash at first. But all we saw was snowing nothing else, very weird. Mainstream media has been down playing alot of the weather in my opinion.
I think it's gonna hit the Midwest, because 1 week ago we received our 1st snow day & I heard horrible earthquake sounds of Thunder (no lightning tho ) as It was snowing. I've never seen this my entire life! Hang in there Buffalo..!
Yes, things are changing. However Thundersnow in Buffalo NY is nothing new. It has been happening all through my 50 years. Usually it happens during or at the beginning of a good lake snow. It occassssionnnally sommmmetimes happens during flurries. I don't remember it ever happening with blizzards. It does sound neat! :)
First of all, great footage! Second, if you see that happen again, I would shoot it from indoors. The type of lightning that event produces, positive flash lightning, is more dangerous than typical lightning and you can be thankful you folks weren't struck since lightning actually originates on the ground and can stretch for miles.
+Alex H. (Pluto) You don't expect thundersnow during a snow storm so when it happens it takes you completely by surprise. As someone else mentioned, it's a rare event. Also, I think most people associate a thunderstorm with summer so it's weird hearing thunder and seeing a white out of snow.
I feel so bad for you but I'm glad it's not in my area. I unlike most others would HAVE to go to work being a nurse...I'd be walking my butt to work but think of the over time!
Soge King its very rare. only one blizzard a season usually produces a show like this, but 2014-15 had quite a few thunderblizzards. juno, buffalo, etc.

Had 65" or so in Cheektowaga. Live in Hamburg now somewhat near where the collision shop roof collapsed.

We are in England and I've just heard my first ever thundersnow :)
Great footage, made even better because it's shot in widescreen and not portrait.

Craziest week of snow in my life. 88" of snow here in 3 days!
I love thundersnow so much!
I've never seen this before. This is amazing! Beautiful footage

I've been in a couple thundersnows and they are absolutely incredible.
Thundersnow here in Buffalo NY. = MANY trips down the driveway with the snowblower's commin'. Swell.
Great video!! Lake-effect snow with thunder.
DAMN, that's AMAZING!!!!
I'd just gone to bed when I heard it. Regular thunderstorms don't bother me but thundersnow freaks me the hell out.
It's kind of unreal.....When I visited NYC many years ago,I saw snow and (silent) lightning....against a pink sky,LOL!!
It really is, thunder snow is amazing. Very rare for sure.
4 inches per hour snowfall rates - and those big lightning flashes - equal probably nearly 1,000 joules per kilogram of most unstable convective available potential energy. Now that is what I call a convective snowstorm!!!
+Charles Smith In Spring, before major tornado and severe thunderstorm outbreaks, the energy can be more than 4,000 joules per kilogram.
Jim Cantore would love this
You gotta be kidding me!!! 😀
I live in Scotland,never seen this-Wow!
Ooo Goosebumps!!! Very cool!
Holy freaking sh*t that's so damn cool.
thanks! Hopefully we get some this year!
@@BuffaloWeather1 We might! The caterpillars where very puffy, and the chickadees are early.

+hebneh It usually happens during very heavy snowfall
I grew up in Chicago and lived there til I was 24. I never heard, or saw thundersnow.
Pause the video @ 1:02. Holy crap!

Stlsurvivor That has to be wrong. No lightning no thunder.
This is one crazy extreme event. Things are changing FAST.

You are very very very lucky, thundersnow is extremely rare and not that many people get to witness it
...Riders on the...snowstorm... lol
We had thundersnow in NYC today.

There's something really creepy about thunder and lightning in snow.
Its like an alien planet,
I dont understand whats so great about it? i've never experienced it before. why is it so amazing?
The thunder/ lightning lights up the snow, and while the snow is white reflects the light and makes it seem like a blinding flash when in person.
+Alex H. (Pluto) Because thundersnow is rare. You don't see lightning and thunder during a snowstorm.

That’s crazy but fun
Heavy Snow and Thunderstorm in Hamburg New York.
This happened last night in England woke everyone in my town up !!
have fun
how in the hell does that happen?
It does this in Minecraft quite a bit also
Thundersnow is so rare....and not to be trusted! A true sign that you have a bad snow storm in your area
It is very rare!
@@BuffaloWeather1 WE HAVE THE RAREST THUNDERSTORM
Close your light when filming such ... Your cam is always trying to focus on the closest flake instead of focus at large.
Will do, Thanks for the advice!
BABABOOEY BABABOOEY
I feel so bad for you but I'm glad it's not in my area. I unlike most others would HAVE to go to work being a nurse...I'd be walking my butt to work but think of the over time!
I pushed two nurses out of the road that were stuck earlier today. Thank your for your service.
whats so special? just thunder while its snowing
The thunder hit the snow and all the snow lightens up, it's like the world is exploding around you.
