Classic Game Room reviews VARKON arcade game pinball machine from Williams released in 1982. One of only 90 Varkon machines ever produced, this amazing model lives at the Professional and Amateur Pinball Association World Headquarters in Pittsburgh. Varkon is a pinball machine crammed into an upright arcade game cabinet and played in a mirror with joysticks for flipper controls. Plays like a pinball machine, tasts like a videogame. Varkon is a rarity and very cool because of it, also the art design, title and gameplay are truly unique and very detailed. It handles in a unique way because the gameplay is basically reversed and the joysticks change the characteristics of ball handling. This CGR review of Williams pinball machine Varkon has gameplay from Varkon arcade game showing Varkon game play footage in HD in this Varkon review. Filmed at Pinburgh 2011.
One thing really interesting about Varkon's artwork: it was all built BACKWARDS. The actual pinball playfield has all the text, numbers, everything... reflected, so that it looks right in the mirrored version. You might've just shown Varkon to more people than ever played the real thing ;)
Varkon is one of the best names for a game ever.
I've had the pleasure of playing Varkon on two separate occasions, and it's very cool. In fact the first time I played it, I had no idea it one of only 90. It makes me wish Williams made more of them but obviously wasn't popular enough.
By the way Mark, you can also pull the joysticks down to use the flippers.
I had the pleasure of playing this game in person yesterday. I didn't even know what it was but it was pretty nice. Williams seems to be the master of making great games that also happen to be really obscure. Still need to play Sinistar in person.
wow this is one of the coolest machines ive ever seen
this is really cool, they should make more games like this.
Varcon looks Var - awesome!!!!!!! Wanna play it. Wish Funspot had one.
I will be on the look out for a Varkon machine for the rest of my life. Thank you CGR!
Just gotta love those Sound & Light F/X. Totally awesome!
Praise the day I subscribed to CGR.
There's one available to play at Galloping Ghost Pinball in Brookfield, Illinois.
I was just about to say that till I discovered your comment.
I looked this up after seeing it located right next to a Polybius arcade machine in a sceeenshot. It looks like a cool novelty, but it also seems kind of ridiculous so I'm not surprised that not a lot were made. If I see one, I'll definitely give it a try.
I love your subtle sarcasm
Very Cool. I have never seen that before.
A friend of mine had a Varkon in his house. I had the privilege of opening up the back and looking inside. It's PACKED in there. Two level playfield at bottom of cabinet (the only Williams game with a "basement"), pinball boards attached to sides and back of cabinet, wires neatly tucked away, barely enough room for the coinbox to fit. Wouldn't want to be the technician who had to service this game in a crowded arcade!
Well, I was not expecting this.
Mark, I was lucky enough to have a father who some reason bought Centipede, Asteroids, Donkey Kong and two Pinball games. I was lucky enough to have these growing up. a) beat the clock and b).. I can't remember what the other pinball game was.
Anyway, I've only played one vertical pinball game but it was actually vertical and not using a mirror. I'm not a pinball freak (I will go out of my way to play it though) but this was one of the best videos in a while.
Oh man! I vaguely remember playing this as a kid. No idea it was this rare. I do remember I wasn't any good at it lol. I perhaps played a couple of games only. Thanks for the review.
Never seen this before.
Note this image of a face in the lower playfield when it is illuminated…
You're lucky to have played Varkon in person, Mark.
ouuuuuuuuuuu, Williams colection nice!
VARKON does indeed rule.
VARKON is an anagram for KARNOV. and that in russian means Carnage.. (Cosmic Carnage reference?) then remove the C and add a K and you have the most awesome lord of spaceship shooters, golf and pinball!
All Hail Lord Karnage/Varkon!
i just downloaded it on visual pinball and its awesome :P
It just occurred to me... some of the sound effects for Varkon are awfully similar to those heard in the arcade game, Joust!
Eugene Jarvis made the sounds for Williams during that era. Fire Power, Space Shuttle, Robotron, Blaster, Joust, Varkon, Defender, Time Fantasy; just to name a few.
I hear haters but don't understand this is cool, this is extremely cool and yes anyone who gets to play inside the face can indeed say they lived a complete life, anybody who thinks otherwise don't know their ass from their brains, imo !
Mark has to go to Vegas and visit the Pinball Hall of Fame, some day. Alas, no Varkon. They do have other rare antiques, though.
All hail Varkon.
Well, time for someone techny-savvy to remake this into a kit then!
Varkon: The Movie. Hollywood, get on that shit!
CGR's so awesome xD
Good luck finding one ;)
i got to play varkon at the ohio pinball show last year ,indeed fun yet strange
I wonder if the guy who did the cabinet art for Varkon also did the cabinet art for Joust..Varkon's artwork is rather reminiscient of that game.
can anyone else see a skull grinning at you in the center :D thats lord karnage
the phisics in this game are..like ..real!
I would not steal a Varkon machine, but I would download one if I could.
I truely wish that Mark has the rest of the Varkons :)
i really need a pinball machine in my house, pinball fx2 just doesn't cut it anymore!
Lord Karnage approves this arcade
My favourite part was when he said Varkon.
hope you did alot of pinball machine reviews
Too freakin cool.
@809Ollie Sorry, but they have yet to create a version of MAME that can download a physical pinball machine. Maybe once we've invented holodecks it will be possible.
this thing is awesome, a lot of the sounds from it remind me of atari games :)
the graphics look so realistic for an old school game... Why did they not continue with this technology?
If you want to dl varkon you can! it's in visual pinball
that's awesome
Aaah nice.
@BC2Recon The meaning of life is CGR :P
Yeah!
awesome vids
Anyone realised that the Williams logo is an upside down Motorola logo (or maybe the motorola logo is an upside down williams logo)?
4:02 VICTORY! YES
Looks really fun. I'm making a pinball machine out of card board.
Have you finished it yet? How did it turn out?
I did not know about the mirror. I thought it was legitimate vertical pinball like Japanese Pachinko machines (but it's clearly not).
@retread01 The reason i said first, was cause of that guy who said that the person above him was going to say first, so i said first on purpose, NOT the let ppl's see i was first.
Thank you.
It sounds like the name of a retro fantasy villain
I named my Empoleon in Pokemon Y as Varkon :)
@MisterCjWallace haha nice prediction!! five stars!
Mark is better at Varkon than us :)
Varcon looks like a space marine from StarCraft
pt. 2: @inecomcompany
I just wanted to say that this was one of the most interesting videos on here in a long time. Your videos are always of consistant quality but this one was just awesome.. mostly because of the machine itself.
I have question about the unit though. The ramp that you were having trouble with.. it looks really cool when the ball goes 'up' it. Can you explain how this worked? Was it a hill? It also seems like it uses magnets.
I can't be the only one who wants to know..
@BC2Recon You know if you say that he's just going to review the Monty Python movie.
@BC2Recon What about the power of love?
nice
varkon on the vectrex
oh my the advertisement this time was a 15minute long religious thing.
@BC2Recon Playing video games, of course! What alse?
What if he reviewed all of the pinball machines in the pinburgh tournament.
400 videos?
lol the williams logo looks like motorola's - just upside down!
Mark you should review "Friday" by Rebecca Black. XD
@rahuldox Been there, done that.
"YESSS!"
why doesn't zen studios remake actual pinball machines and put them in zen pinball 2? there custom made ones are great but it would be awesome to play replicas of pinball machine classics on a video game.
It's called "Pinball Arcade" by Farsight Studios.
there is a game called zen pinball 2 to. are you saying that pinball arcade has replicas of real pinball machines?
George Splanco Yup.
George Splanco Pinball Arcade digitally recreates real Williams/Bally/Gottlieb/Stern/Data East machines. They have 51 machines so far! You should look them up, they're on about every console (but all the newest tables are on PC/moble devices first)
For years later, Zen Studios picked up the Williams pinball license so you might get your wish.
kool, you guys wanna play some VARKON ?
This has only 34k views???
@BC2Recon what the monty python movie
