- Classic Game Room reviews the JOUST 2: SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST arcade machine at PAPA World Headquarters (Professional and Amateur Pinball Association) from Williams released in 1986. Joust 2 is a one or two player game that costs 1 token (or quarter) and allows you to choose which level of the game you would like to start at. Starting earlier gets more points early on to increase the odds of getting extra birds. Flap your wings with the arcade button and transform into a pegasus for some of those ground battles in tight spaces, Joust 2 mixes up the traditional Joust videogame formula with cool level designs and awesome artwork.
I visit this game often on my PS2. It’s on Midway’s Arcade Treasures. The first release. Also has great bonus content with video interviews from the game developers.
There actually was a console release of this game on the Arcade's Greatest Hits, The Midway Collection 2 for the Playstation released in 1997.
Also on Midway Arcade Treasures Volume 1 released a console generation later.
@@Bloodreign1 And on Midway Arcade Origins for the XBox 360 (compatible with XBox One!) I never really got into this one, always preferred the original Joust, but am now tempted to give it a try.
I was amazed the first time I saw this thing. Joust is one of my favourite games and I didn't even know it had a sequel until years and years later.

I didn't even know there was a sequel... The original is one of my old school favorites so I'll have to check it out.
This machine was at a pizza place down the street from me, back in the day, and I always assumed the difficulty was cranked up so they could get more quarters, because you'd be swarmed by enemies right off the bat and pretty much die immediately, every time, but after hearing this review, it's possible it was just the game, itself.
There's a pinball expo happening in my town this weekend - they'll have arcade games too, so I hope to see this machine there!

The arcades machines IMO is the best part of gaming. they have themes, button layout for the game. all original arcades machines are better than any actual controller.
wish where i live (brazil) had more arcades.
Joust and Joust 2 are on the SNES via the Williams Arcade's Greatest Hits game.
Joust 2 is not on that, it is on a PS1 Midway collection though.

I just bought this actual game from PAPA/Replay Foundation recently.
I vaguely remember playing this game back in the day at my favorite arcade center, which is still there and doing very well. You are a lucky man finding this awesome machine.

this arcade game was pretty rare for me, there was only one place that i ever saw this game at and it was at a really sleazy and dingy kinda place that was mostly known for billiards, i never went there unless it was with friends and even then it was kinda awkward so unfortunately i wasnt able to spend much time with the game.

There are a few reasons why this game wasn't popular. First was that it came out WAY after the original Joust. The four years in between J1 and J2 not only saw the great video game crash of 1984, but the launch of significantly more advanced 16bit games like Space Harrier and Outrun. Second, J2 was vertical. This creates a "funnel" like effect that is almost always advantageous for the computer, so it was f'ing tough to play. If J2 would have been released before 1984, it might have had a chance, but ultimately, it just wasn't as fun as the original and it was hella hard.
@KingDavid73 I have midway arcade treasures 1 &2 and you are correct Joust 1&2 is on MAT 1. BTW i didn't know there was a third one made, thanks for the info.
I didn't know there was a Joust 2 until I went on vacation back east circa summer 1993. Found a copy at either Hershey Park or Cedar Point (I'm not sure which). Didn't play it though.
I knew he was going to review it one day when I saw this machine in one of the pinball competition videos :D
He did in the older Centipede review. He specifically says he's using an X-Arcade controller on a PC.
@4real0316 yeah, the 3rd one is a bunch of Midway racing games, like Hydro Thunder, San Francisco Rush 2049, and Race Drivin' (and several others).
This was another game I saw in the arcade as a kid, praying it would come out for the Atari 7800 lol

True, true. Joust 3 for 360/PS3! Budget download. On-line multi-player. Probably be in 3-D, like that Top Gun title. Just you and other players, flying around an ostrich or other winged creatures, battling it out in skies, filled with floating cliffs. One thumb stick to observe your 360 world in. Pounce others out of the sky. Only to look up and see a massive beast butt black out the world, entombing your player and mount into an egg...some things just shouldn't be in 3-D.
This machine...is a MENACE.
I think Joust 2 is on one of the Midway Arcade Treasures collections, I know it's not the 3rd one since that's all racing games, but I'm fairly sure it's on one of the first 2.

Mark's reviews are very laid back and humorous. Most of the time he doesn't break the entire game down for the viewer, and you're not going to see a score or a grade given to the game at the end. Everyone else does that type of review, which is what makes them extremely boring in most cases. If you're looking for that type of review, you're not gonna find it on this channel.
It would be awesome if physical Mark talks to narrating Mark.

@TronPachioftheDynamo If you weren't around for the era these games came from (and you aren't) no they won't look good and fun to you. But if you grew up in the time these games came out, you enjoyed them for they were cutting edge at that time. I myself played Joust 1 in the arcade a good bit, but sadly didn't get to play Joust 2 till many many years later, I rather enjoyed it, and now own Joust 2 on a PS 2 and PS 1 collection, along with the original Joust. Also have it on NES, not as good.

Hey! if the bird changing mode is a option there is only in Joust 2 , well in this case Ive seen this game on a NES console on one of those 400 in 1 games ! And i haven't seen those games since the 80e ...

@tuxedomex One reason I liked Ms. Pac-Man. 30 minutes per quarter over 30 seconds. Then again, all day passes with card keys work well for life swallowing titles. I swear most light gun games have nearly unbeatable foes, just to drink your money up.
