I don't really play punk, but your tips are spot on for most any genre. Thank you.
Thanks, I appreciate that!
The problem with rhythm guitar Is that people just learn the typical root 5th Power cord form and think the rhythm guitarist just along doing pluncks along doing those. So they think they can call themselves a rhythm guitarist and they come to audition for your band and you have to tell them "You can't play! You still need to learn to play the instrument!"
I love when a track drops to just bass and drums for the guitar solo it helps break up the song a bit and sounds fresh to the ears
For sure! They can start to sound like white noise after awhile, haha.
I prefer a rhythm guitar track playing during the guitar solo
@@CsRj2854it makes the rythym track come to life as much as it supports the solo.
Ah yes, the old Pantera trick!
Listen to tornado of soul solo. That solo was majestic right, but not without dave mustaine rhythm playing.
This is why so many three piece bands sound so good, like Nirvana, The Police, Rush, etc. Or even some four piece bands where the singer is only doing vocals and not any instrument maybe like the red hot chili peppers
A four piece with a dedicated singer is instrumentally a trio.
That riff at the end with the bassliterally sounds like something me and my friends made a while ago, hope we never run out of riffs in our life time.
He speaks! Cool video. I agree man. That’s why I love it when bands record as if they are a 3 piece (or 4piece) and resist the urge to add a bunch of rhythm guitar tracks.
If you want a great example from old skool classic rock, listen to some '70s Bad Company, especially live. Lead singer Paul Rodgers is a very able guitar player but he often dropped out for large parts of songs. Partly that was so he could focus on singing lead but partly it was because when he came back in the song got a whole lot bigger and meaner, basically for Free (pun intended). He usually played a chimey, cleaner guitar like a Strat or Les Paul Junior so that the frequencies didn't compete with the crunchier humbucker Les Paul. Super effective use of musical space!
Great video, love this “longform” model for you and really appreciate all this knowledge you keep dropping 🤘🏼 thank you!!
Thanks, I'm happy to hear you're enjoying things so far!
the way i like to write pop punk is to use the bass as the lead, "informing" the melody. then the lead guitar is more of "cool stuff on top"
Shake with me is such a banger! Love that you referenced that huge chorus!
Definitely a favourite of mine from the new record!
Strummed chords can work depending on how they’re played.
When I play chords in my band our bass player plays higher on the neck and more melodically. by chords I do not mean power chords more so triads
We try to avoid that though because it does take up a lot of frequency space
There's nothing wrong with strumming sometimes. The problem is that a lot of guitar players seem to strum all the time.
@@crimfan yeah it’s not really an original approach lol
@@dorianford6227 It's not but people seem to need to relearn it over and over. Keyboard players are even worse than guitarists. They spend so much time learning how to play big two hand lines and then have to play way, way less in a band.
@@crimfan everyone overplays it’s apart maturing as a player however guitarists, singers and synth players are more prone to it though because we got the coloring roles
Was thinking this as well. Sometimes its better to have a one-guitar lineup so the bass and drums can shine through.
I think two is great, but it's nice when things are arranged in a way for the focal points to really be highlighted.
Good tips. The automatic thing people always do is just fill up the space. It’s tiring and boring. There needs to be more relaxed areas to contrast the harder areas to be effective.
Love this! One band I love though that basically has the rhythm guitar playing power chords constantly underneath the lead guitar is Iron Chic. Other than them, I can't think of many other bands that pull it off.
Thanks for watching!
Exact reason I'm starting a punk trio right now.
The one riff, one chord style of dual guitar playing has been done an awful lot. It's great and there alot of awesome bands who do that, but I've always found it interesting when a band sounds awesome and full with only one guitar player.
A very simple way to mix guitar is to have more of a noise wall with rhythm guitar or just have breaks for them
Great thoughts!
Much appreciated! 🙏
I don't play punk but your tips are really useful. I play in a roots rock trio and need to sing a lot. I love singing over just drums and bass, letting the guitar dropping out or just play some fills. Another is to play rootless voicings. For instance, don't play x54555 for D9, play xx455x instead. It carries the info you need, leaving the root for the bassist, and it cuts down on how much you need. Or you can play the lower notes x54xxx and answer with xxx555. Rootless voicings are way, way underappreciated by most guitar players.
Thanks, I'm glad you think so! I was hoping they'd be applicable to multiple genres, and not just one. The rootless voicings is a great idea too. I often play inverted power chords to leave the root note for the bass, and then it also keeps the guitars sounding more consistent as you're playing everything on the same strings. Usually gives you a nice contrast when played together!
Many classic riffs are inverted power chords, most notably “Smoke on the Water.”
Ocean Avenue riff at the end 😩
❤❤❤
The riff underneath the spoken word a song from somewhere?
Just something I wrote for a previous video, so I use it like a little "score" for these newer ones.
How do I spice things up If I only have a bass guitar, all my songs are bass and drums
you could play power chords on your bass and pitch it up an octave, won't sound identical but will be unique and probably pretty cool
@@georgetwine2261 Imma try, thank you!!
I love fuzz on bass
I mean it's probably going to sound a little odd if it's only bass and drums, but if that's all you have, try treating other layers more like guitars. So re-amp them more like you would with actual guitar tracks, experiment with more chord-based tracks, try EQing out some of the lows too so they don't "sound" like bass tracks anymore.
Pitch shifting could be cool too. Maybe have a look into how Royal Blood do things, as they're quite well known for only using bass and drums - and making things sound like there's more going on, through production tricks.
I remember writing a bass and drums only section on a clients song, where I used both a MIDI bass and real bass, plus one fuzz track, which gives you a bit more depth than just a single bass track. Maybe try something like that, if you like that sort of sound ruclips.net/video/fD73a-HdQ30/видео.htmlsi=1tEjfp5QTV1fS2dv&t=122
What guitar is in the thumbnail? I love it 😅
Tim's I would assume, haha. I think they're made by Gretsch.
Can you give tips on melodic hardcore?
Sure! Anything specific you're struggling with?
Ever use flats on bass?
I don't believe so. But I like the sound of them in general!
I’m the rhythm guitarist in my band so I feel personally attacked 😂
I thought I made it pretty clear that it works on a case by case basis, but maybe I didn't 😂
@@SugarpillProd Yeah I know mate just joking I fully agree with you😆
Is this a voice reveal? 👀
Probably not as the last like 5 videos have all had my voice in them 😂
I liked b more, ngl
You should do a post mortem on why the new strung out album is a mixing catastrophe. It physically hurts my ears to listen to and almost everyone on reddit and elsewhere is in agreement the mix is really trash
It does sound a bit rough admittedly 🤣 But I don't like to blame the mixers or anything, as you never know what happens between the initial mix and final revision process. At the end of the day, the sound of a record is down to the artists and/or labels decision, so I guess they wanted it to sound that way, for one reason or another.
I disagree. Gotta have a good rhythm guitar sound, Because so many drummers do not have a clue what to play
I'm saying in specific cases, it can sound better to cut out the rhythm guitar, to make something else shine through. I'm not saying to never have rhythm guitar, that would just be an odd thing to suggest.
@@SugarpillProd ok. I've got drummer blues at the moment. Had a session and the lead guitar and drummer were way the off rhythm!
@@elisecliftonklitz OK?
@@Dil_Moran trolls will troll literally anything and anyone's opinion. You are smart ass
@@elisecliftonklitz I'm sorry mumma, I never meant to hurt you.
I never meant to make you cry
that slotface song is terrible
Hard disagree haha.
Sorry, kid, but A sounds much better. It comes off as full, energetic, and engaging. B sounds like you need to either cheat with a doubling, delay, and hard pan, or get the guitarist back in the studio to track that over and over until it is no longer sounding thin and dead.
I never said one sounded better over the other, it's all subjective.
You make a good point, especially considering adding dynamics to your track to make it more interesting, but it falls a bit flat with the A/B comparison. To me A sounds way better on it’s own, but as part of a song I imagine the break from the rythm guitar would make for an interesting mixup.
It's hard to give a fair comparison because a lot of what will sound "better" in A is just down to the perceived loudness compared to B. Obviously B is going to sound a lot more "empty", especially as a direct comparison. But if you think of it in terms of the focal points during that section - so the main riff I'm playing would really be the highlight - it's totally obscured in A, whereas B it stands out. And much like you said, if you heard that in context with the full song, it would make a lot more sense from an arrangement perspective too.
Part of that is my fault though, as I don't think I explained things as best I could, haha.
