These clocks had very thin plates that wore quickly

How do I adjust the chiming in this clock

It's almost complicated. Theres a lever with a spring tail on the back plate, and it attaches to the strike rack. Too little tension, and it will only count even strikes. Too much tension, and it will not work well at all. Very hard to describe without being there to show you.

I figured it out .I'm pretty good with clocks.my mistake was not knowing what navy watch time chiming was .totally different striking sequence

Lol, yeah, it's different. As far as ships clocks go, this is the hardest to adjust the even/odd count.
Sorry for the confusion, but glad you got it!!

@@GulfCoastClock how do you start the process of when to set the tension of the spring tail lever? is it at the 1st strike or the 8th strike or somewhere in between?

A cam on the rear plate rotates once per hour on the hand/center shaft.
Beyond that it's just a matter of placing it just right. Too much in either direction screws up the strike

That is really just worn out. This is one of those times when a replacement new movement (if available) would be probably more cost effective and better than repair. At that point, I'd be looking at buying a used Chelsea and at least have a clock worth repairing.

While this may not be an investment grade piece, it has a tremendous amount of sentiment to the owner. Hermle makes a retrofit kit for this, but it isnt cheap ($600ish, with little profit). I may be able to rebuild it 2x for what that costs, and make some improvement modifications along the process of repair. I've rebuilt a couple of these Schatz "type 3" mechanisms, and all are still going AFAIK.
