@@ThisOldTony I love your channel and your builds. This was a great project, made so nice and clean. But just one thing got me triggered a bit. All metal box, 3 bolts connector for power... and NO PE connected to a cover? Shame on you Mister! Just one more weld of 6mm screw and one more cable for this project to be a full masterpiece...
Don't worry, partially joking but i would add just that cable to a cover for safety :) Maybe it's just my proffesional deviation as we call it here :)
Wonderful work, good humour! Keep it up and always have fun with things you create:)
On the other hand, if you put a wire ground on your cover, you would have to separate that gearbox electrically from it, otherwise you will make a wonderful toasting machine... decisions, decisions, decisions...

Hey TOT, Just couldn't resist. Anyways, I used to be a Prototype Welder/Fabricator at my last welding job, was also a Journeyman Boilmaker, and I really knew how to make those drinks! (but I digress), I was always was working on something new. Your turntable reminded me of 2 things. I had to weld multiple hydraulic cylinders with their end caps. All parts were machined in our machine shop (back in 1983). So I grabbed a RIdgid pipe threader, that had the chuck large enough to accommodate the cylinders, and got a foot pedal hooked up for the variable speed welding with MIG using .045 wire. They turned out real nice, and no leaks!
The 2nd thing I did was I just took a big old bearing and a round plate of steel and made a hand spin table. Had to weld these big steel wheels for Hyster Fork Lift Trucks that they lift in/out of the hold of ships to load/unload. The welds were stitch welded opposite on each side with this inner plate as the hub.. The diameter of these babies were 36" inches, and it was 1" flat bar 10" across rolled to make it round. Anyways I got complimented by the machinists as they said they could set their tooling on the lathe to my welds as they were always 1/64" within a 3/8" leg doing 3 passes. Ah those were the days.

He wasn't adding rod because it was a fusion weld. The only thing he had to do is maintain arch length. An 8 year old child could of welded that SS tube.

Consider you called yourself that and it never entered my mind. Maybe don't be so negative with yourself and then you would have understood what I was saying, that he had automated the welding process and that is why it looked awesome. Have a look at Jody Coliers (weldingtipsandtricks) videos of a welding lathe with the torch on pulse and a clamp holding the torch and it looks just like His SS weld. and a person is not even involved in that

It's been years since I welded. But, being, as my oldest grand daughter says, a bit of a goofball, I bought a small welder recently, and have fixed a handrail with it so far, and that's about it. I'm now recovering from open-heart surgery (not related to the welder) but hope to do more welding soon. Being a computer nerd and old now, I don't know how much I'll get. Me getting one, however, inspired one of my sons to pick up a better welder than I got. Now with that background, here's my point (yeah, I'm full of it):
I wasn't going to watch this video. It looked like something I really won't ever need. Ever. But, frankly, this was one of my favorite This Old Tony videos, and I loved it. it was fascinating from start to finish, and I'm talking about more than just Tony's dry wit, which I love. I grew up with a brother with that type of humor. He's a rocket scientist -- one of the best in the world -- now retired from designing external booster motors for the space shuttle. He does stuff now like detect microscopic cracks in rebuilt Apache Helicopter rotors for the military. That's his hobby, but he makes a boatload of money doing it. He invented the machine that does it after buying a ground radar system for fun, then designing better antennas so it sees things in the earth differently. He hires that system out to universities to help with archeological digs....
Thanks for making a great set of videos that my wife even enjoys, though she understands almost nothing of the content.
Long-winded I am. A computer geek I am having used nothing but Linux for the better part of the past 25 years.

I built something like this about 20 years ago, it was primarily for welding hydraulic cylinders. But as I had to use parts available in the "junk" bin, I went with a hydraulic motor and gearing. (yeah hydraulics was our thing back then) and built an electronic box based on pwm with potentiometer to control the dutycycle and a load of mosfets in parallel to control the speed of the electric motor driving the pump.
Surprisingly it worked really well. Very smooth, high torque, slow enough for welding, excellent result overall.

I love the table tony I built mine from 2 gm electric power steering motors from small front wheel drives and a wiper motor from a dodge 1/2 ton , I use a 18 volt dewalt drill speed control and battery to control the speed , it totally makes awesome welds every time , and it's totally portable , , I just did it as a side project because I watched your video , thank you so much for the amazing idea

You are a damn genius. I thought I had seen as good as RUclips could get with Frank Howarth’s stuff, but you blow him out of the water in terms of video quality and production. Your humor is spot on. Plus, you are simply better at metalwork than he is with wood (and that’s saying a lot). Best stuff on the ‘net - thank you!!

Hey Tony, just re-watched this one now that after 10 plus years I was able to get a budget TIG welder. I now understand the need for one of these turn tables since radius work is dam hard with TIG. Just wanted to say that table is awesome! Hope to build one some day!

Oh, i have all your skills. & Tool Envy! I am a kid from a Dairy Farm, in the "Land between two Rivers" I'm currently a fiber artist in the village of 52151 (we think alike) I started cleaning plugs on OLD JD's at 5yr. A shop, choir, band geek in HS. An Industrial Technology major at Northern Iowa. Followed "her" to Hawkeyeville. Eventually was the President of IC Apple UG. I have the world's largest library of 65c02 software. I had a WOZ signed 2gs.
I got into IT Systems & Networking Engineering. Little places like Siemens. The whole world AD Tree. OMG! Even found those missing files from 1930 to 1945. Wheee! Did that for 25+ years. Now a fiber artist, with a 10 node Raspi network. Just ordered a 3d printer. Fully insane, scare girls, uber geek some times. Absolutely love your work! I got my knocks in Historic Preservation, living in an 1854 hand adzed red oak posts & beams, with 14" wide 16" OC Black Walnut edge cut slotted/pocked studs. An analog world with 160 years of un-fxxkng to do. Nice to meet you!

Another gem!! I wouldn't have welded the box, just in case but that's me. As a kid I could never bring myself to glue airfix models together, even now the wallpaper is nailed to the wall, just in case it needs adjusting later. Yes, I do crosswords in pencil too.
Then again I'm only working in three dimensions.

It might be prudent to insulate the ground clamp well, if the paint scratches off, it could cause some weld current to go through the chassis and ruin your gearbox.

Not really... the electrons will follow the path of least resistance, so as long as there's still a good connection through the shaft, no current will travel through the gearbox or bearings.

Hi - I know this was done a long time ago, but...
Could you make a small 3 point pipe clamp with brass wheels for a ground clamp on the shaft. This would leave a lot of room to fit a 90º gas swivel fitting on the end??!!
Oh - you could also plug in an MP3 player so that "Unchained Melody" ('Ghost' Soundtrack) from the Righteous Brothers plays when you turn it on....
