There is a difference in earning a living vs. getting rich. Trying to get rich can ruin the land, but if you treat it right it will allow you to live okay. Looks like you have a sense of balancing things.

One of the problems I see is when do you invest in technology (robots, dryers, etc)? At the speed technology advances, you don’t want a huge investment to be out of date by the time it’s paid off. I don’t have an answer, but just something I’ve thought about myself…

Yeah i was just watching a video on 10th generation dairyfarmer. And their giving up their big trench silos and to three 128 foot concrete uprights because they're going to robotic feeding. So your hesitation on trench silos is well justified. Now they're going to have two huge concrete monoliths.

Thanks for another great video Kip.
It was really informative and interesting.
Appreciate your rundown of 2024. It was most interesting and informative. Your family meetings for planning are most important. Got to look ahead like you are. Agree with you on the milking side of the house. You are at a nice size now. Operating good. As far as your silo goes I do understand your outlook on them. I am not a silo fan mainly due to the hard amount of labor involved. But you are doing good with them so let it be and press on.
I totally agree with you on tiling. I’m from Iowa and we tiled almost all of our land. Tiling really pays you back. Agree with you on that. Machinery is always a high dollar investment. You buy at good prices and you have good machinery. Doing great I think. Grain farming has its ups and downs surely but we all make it work.
I think you and your family are excellent planners and doing great looking ahead. My compliments to all of you. Doing great and good planning.
Thanks for sharing with us Kip.
You all take care and be safe.

I understand your thoughts, but I would really push for a tmr mixer, even if stationary. It’s amazing how much the numbers jump when you switch. I’m sure you do a really good job blending it all in with the way you feed now, but it’s also a good way to make sure each cow is getting adequate feed and their consumption stays up, and you can track how much you feed, and make adjustments as needed.

Here in Connecticut, we have a massive dairy farm about 5 miles away, they milk 3500 head. It's a 24-hour milking operation, they have two of the German made rotary milking systems. They also have an average 2 calves born a day with 5 veterinarians on staff. They just had a new cow barn built and its massive 8 acres under one roof... Really cool to do tours there....Very futuristic..

Lots of tough decisions about the future. When I was in that situation with small children I held off on expanding until they were a little older to help. It's good to spend time with a growing family. Then as they age bring the cows back with older halp combined with a younger herd. You are right on it though, it's cyclical and the market sometimes decides with you. I think sometimes I think people try to change too much too fast best to keep options open. The way you feed your herd now is almost like a TMR without a TMR the way I see it. Best wishes always.

On the dairy side of things there are a few small changes that could make big differences. If you could go to two groups to avoid 2+ hrs in the holding pen for the cows. Ai breeding would be huge too. Especially with prices for angus cross calves being 500+ dollars. Genomic testing and using sexed semen could be huge if you want to keep your numbers down, but increase profitability of each cow. I'm sure you've already thought about these things though. Of course these changes require infrastructure that costs money.

If your staying in dairy your life will be better when everyday equipment is up to date. Field equipment sits idle too much for cost for us. I think a valmetal autoration would work great for you. We have tower silos with a stationary mixer and conveyors for feeding. Works great and save s so much time.

I think that you should all sit down and come up with a rough plan of where you want to be in the future. Business plans usually plan for immediate, mid term and long time. amount of detail in the plans depending on the term of the plan. I’d even consider a draft architecture plan for the work area. Then if you have the funds you can start doing actions towards your immediate goals.
As for expanding the herd (that would have to include a new milking setup, parlour or robotic: the history of dairying worldwide has been the need to constantly expand the herd. Your grandfather had 50 cows or so when he started, your father had 80, you have 150! This is driven y the economics and technological advances . Consider the increase in the number of families the farm has to support now and down the road .
An idea is to decide on putting a certain annual % of gross or net profit into an expansion fund. This would make the future decisions easier
The best of luck and I hope you all keep on dairying

Can’t go wrong putting in tile and make your current ground more productive.
Manure pit to cut down labor of spreading everyday and gain some fertilizer advantage. Feed out of the silos to a mixer will cut down on feed waste and improve cow diet. Robot milkers would be nice but don’t think they pencil out to good on a smaller dairy. Ben site will improve marketing but add labor to maintain and baby sit the grain quality in the Ben.

I’m a huge fan of paying down debt. Allows for increased flexibility. As far as buying land, you can’t farm without it. Buy all you can afford. Idk if you have grain storage but something to look at if you stay in the corn/soybean business. Dryers are big money but allow you to better time the market. One question I’ve been meaning to ask… Any way you could dig a loading dock where you pile the manure so you could scrap straight into the spreader? It would save all that time trying to load liquid with a bucket.
