I would recommend getting a 3.7L Inline 5 cert rebuilt that are in those colorado for roughly 3K maybe lil more online. I got a cert rebuilt for around that for my 08 colorado LT. Excellent fuel economy for a truck at up to 26 mpg highway and i typically avg around 18.5-20 mpg with city highway combined while having decent power and torque. It has 242 Hp and 242 ft lb torq which is better than the 4.3L v6 in the blazer which is 190 hp and 250 torque. I have had my colorado for 13 yrs and it has treated me great.
So for me, depending on how good of condition the rest of the truck is, I would either rebuild it, or get a crate motor for it and let it go another 150k miles. Its cheaper to buy a new motor than it is to buy a new/ used truck like that.
Glad to hear about the rain. My wife grew up in Shelby and we used to work at the prison so we were just up there this past weekend for a visit. It is interesting to see how the area has changed since we moved a decade ago. Some of the fields in the area look great and some not so much. We even saw some chick pea fields while we were there. Thanks you for the rain update, I have been wondering and watching the weather from down here in Southern California. Lets hope it get's that crop started good!
Before condemning it I’d pull the valve cover and verify both cams are timed correctly. If your cam timing is off it can make a ton of crankcase pressure. That thing should have nylon chain guide and tensioners. Definitely more than enough years on them to be bad. If you replace everything before pistons contact the valves you might get a couple more years out of it pretty cheap. Good luck!🍀

i would recommend maybe looking into getting some uv dye to have on hand can be used to find any oil/hydraulic leaks you may have just takes a black light, if you have a slow leak in something or big like that it could help make it easy to find. you may want to also look into getting a mechanic ear or chassis ear, basically electronic microphones to make some of these noises your trying to chase easier to locate, or eliminate locations
i have a 95 chevy k2500 with the 6.5 diesel that i just keep fixing along with a 04 chevy trailblazer with a 5.3 that we are doing a transmission swap in right now. cheaper to keep the older stuff going then it is to buy a new truck.
I have a 2005 Colorado. It's been a great truck so far it has 160,000 miles on it. If the motor is truly jock, it would make a great platform for a small block V8.
If you want to diagnose a gas engine to see if it is rings, intake or exhaust valve: Take your engine compression tester and remove the gauge head. Then using that hose that remains, adapt it so it fits your shop air compressor line. Then, thread that into each cylinder you want to check and bring that particular cylinder up to TDC so that both valves are closed. Grab a socket that fits your crankshaft and put a breaker bar on it, then brace the breaker bar so that the crankshaft won't move. Now connect the shop air to that air hose off of the compression tester, so that cylinder now has shop air in it. Now listen at the air intake of the motor for leaking air - that means a leaking intake valve on that particular cylinder. Also listen at the muffler - if you hear leaking air, the exhaust valve is leaking. Finally, listen at the oil fill port. If you hear leaking air, the ring are bad. Do this on all cylinders and it will give you a thorough idea of the health of the motor. You can also do oil analysis on it to tell if the bearings are bad. Actually, you should be doing oil analysis on all of your engines, if you aren't already.
I think you should look for a replacement engine. But it always seems like it's hard to find engines that interchange easily. Great that you got some rain!!

LS V8s fit in Colorados... If he isn't attached to the truck I say cut your losses and replace it. It does "run" similarly to how my one car ran when it jumped time. If you do want to keep using it I say you are about at the point of taking the front cover off and checking the engine timing. I would also pull the oil pan and check the bearings for damage from any possible contaminates.
Good to hear the rain worked. I chuckled when you said turning up that CAT. CAT tunes are the best for engines with the horses the engine is designed for. If you upgrade major components with Bulldozer or Marine grade parts then you can get higher horses without risking blowing the engine up. But I knew you were joking around.
Saw a V8 in half. I had a 62 IH scout that had a slant 4 that looked like a V8 sawed down the middle. It used the same oil filter, pistons as a 345 truck engine. The distributor cap look like every other tower were blanked off. It was an interesting engine.
Honestly, it sounded like timing components on the front of the engine. Like the timing chain, tensioner, guides, etc. If those are off, your timing is going to be off causing running issues along with blowby because you got valves opening when they shouldn't if it's jumped timing or the VVT adjusts oddly because of the lack of tension. These engines with the complex timing systems don't go the distance like the small blocks.
That's the way things go for our family vehicles, everything seems to go out in batches. One year was A/C compressors, the next was transmission issues, and now it seems we are on to odd electrical gremlins that live to be consistent until I try to get a hold of them to fix it.

You could TDI swap the Colorado. Tons of folks swap them into Rangers, and there's probably someone you could find to help with the wiring harness to make it pretty much plug and play
My 2005 has 247,000 miles. They also could have had timing chain issues, they are known for that. I run them till they drop. If the body is good used or rebuilt. The 4 bangers were a better engine, mine is a 5.
Time for an LS swap on the Colorado! Great to hear about the rain. I hope you haven't been hit with quite the level of heat we have. Always a great video from you guys! Take care and God bless!
Valve seats are the common problem for misfiring on those engines. I had a 2004 for many years. Made it to 130k before rusting out. Junkyard motor might be best option. Go for an 06 if you can. They got better after 04.
Emissions, computers, sensors etc. That is why i keep my 1980 Chevy 4wd running after owning it since 2006 It has nada of most of the pain in butt modern gadgets that todays trucks have . I have done little to it over the years other than change a belt here there, a power steering pump, Some gaskets, heater core , No emissions other than catalytic converter & gas cap. You deal with normal body parts that you have to repair here & there but it has over 300,000 miles on it I have put maybe 150.000 miles on it myself. 350 engine with 350 trans only thing i dont like is the 10 miles to the gallon at top because of low gearing for pulling heavy loads & 6 miles to gallon when snowplow is on it Oh i have plowed with it since 2006 as well. Best 2 trucks i ever owned 1980 chevy4wd & 1978 Chevy 4wd the 78 got 22 miles to gallon on road & 16 in town 350 engine as well had that truck for 16 yrs all time 4wd too.Only bad egg i got was a 1986 chevy that local dealership used as a plowtruck & covered up body rust underneath & the body rotted around the whole truck in 6 yrs i had it. Totally hid all rot by stuffing it with newspaper & then 3time superundercoating it underneath what a nightmare that body was.
So.. power steering fluid is what was leaking but bob said there was only 2 quarts in it when he checked the oil. So either that’s actually engine oil leaking from somewhere or he ran it low on oil. Either way, replace that cam actuator and make sure the pcv isn’t plugged up. That’s really not that much blow by for an engine and even it could be caused by timing being off
I had one of those Colorado's, and the vvt solenoid has a small screen that goes missing in the oil pan, and then will run rough at time's, and eventually goes into limp mode. The rebuilt and used car motors have been really bad on failure rate. I would have someone you know rebuild that engine with good parts. As long as it's not rusted to the point where it's not worth it. The newer stuff is worse, and over priced. Another used vehicle still is a risk, at least you know what you have, and the work you've done on it. G-d bless.
Camshaft/crankshaft correlation codes can mean an issue with the crankshaft sensor or the camshaft sensor, or can indicate that the timing chain has stretched or jumped time. The low compression on 2 cylinders is not good either. But I thinl your spot on, it needs a motor. Would be scared of a used motor as they are all gonna be 20 years old with a lot of miles.
Sounds like valve train issues as they can cause blowby as well if they are not sealing. Too much crank pressure can blow oil out the seals, usually the weakest one. Just thinking out loud pull the valve cover and watch.
Okay Nick, stupid question... Have you guys thought of trying "Source" on some of your crops? Ive seen some interesting results from other farm tubers runnin the stuff mixed into their first spray, post planting mixes. I know they have a product for corn and another for soybeans, id be surprised if they didnt have one for wheat.

Prayers for more rain 🌧️ for your area!!!!!
The Iowa farm boy. Steve.
😊👍🙏🙏🌧️🇺🇸
Thanks Steve. I decided to have a rebuilder have a go with the engine. Very good at what they do
I made one of skid hitches for our toolcat. So i always have it in the bed. I kinda copied one i saw online. From 2x6 channel iron we had laying around.
Glad for the rain. Sorry for Dad's Colorado. Holding out for more rain and a donor engine for Dad.
It's looking like Scottie, Nick and Robert are going to have a fun project this winter. 😊 You guys ain't got much else to do, besides keeping warm and watching the markets go up and down. Mostly down 😢I'm thinking but with a good project to take your mind away is a good thing. 😊
You could TDI swap the Colorado. Tons of folks swap them into Rangers, and there's probably someone you could find to help with the wiring harness to make it pretty much plug and play
Don't feel bad we haven't had rain in 3 1/2 weeks. This is going to be a hard year for us. even my little garden is doing bad.
You should make a short on the homemade door, love stuff like that
We weren't doing vids yet in 2010 but i should do a short vid. Thanks
That engine family is also noted for timing chain tensioner failures.
New 1500 gmc with 3.0 duramax. I love mine 30 mpg. Come on go. Time to sponsor welker farms!
GMC
Timing chains. Notorious for going bad.
Had an 08 4cyl. Do both intake and exhaust. Good luck
My 2005 has 247,000 miles. They also could have had timing chain issues, they are known for that. I run them till they drop. If the body is good used or rebuilt. The 4 bangers were a better engine, mine is a 5.
Good used engines are a lot cheaper than a replacement vehicles
Times like those with the Colorado you boys need to go live and see if someone out there might have a solution
The truck body looks good, if drivetrain and interior are good a rebuilt motor would make for a nice little truck.
First generation Chevrolet Colorado did have factory option of a 5.3 LS based truck engine in the 4 door 2WD Model.
So.. power steering fluid is what was leaking but bob said there was only 2 quarts in it when he checked the oil. So either that’s actually engine oil leaking from somewhere or he ran it low on oil.
Either way, replace that cam actuator and make sure the pcv isn’t plugged up. That’s really not that much blow by for an engine and even it could be caused by timing being off
Cummins 4BT in the Colorado! Call it the Cuvy (pronounced like covey). 😂
Name is kind of dumb. But I like the idea of putting a 4BT in it.
John Deere 4045 sway maybe a Kubota engine. Much more available engines.
Let's put a cozy little 4.3 liter V6 in that little truck then you'll really have a runner.
Those were good motors. That's why GM stopped making them. Not enough work for the dealerships. My '99 Olds Bravada has a good one. Plenty of power.
LS v8 fit no problem, lots of swap kits out there
Lol. Garbage motor. They're stupid easy to ls swap.
John Deere 4045 swap. Tons of torque & great fuel mileage.
I ❤love❤luv❤ that shirt !! "Faith family farming" !!
I can’t wait to see the Pete finished with the new trailer👀
