That C12 is a worthy engine to rebuild. During my driving career I drove many trucks with the C12. It is quite stout when set at 430HP, it can be run up to 445HP. The engine was great when used in weight sensitive applications.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. I love the welkers because they are doers and not any plug'n'play farmers. Really entertaining to watch 💪🏼💪🏼❤️
As I recall working at Cat, when the engine number got up graded to a new series and adding significant horsepower, some of the internal parts got an upgrade-----such as pistons, rings, bearings, etc. Beware of how much power you are adding without needing internal upgrades.
Hey leg arms. I hate to burst you bubble but that tool you made for Phillip's screws has been around for a long time like over 40 years. I called it a nut buster, I don't really know the correct name. I used it on airplanes, alot. I was actually made for airplanes. You can find it at aircraft tool supplies stores and the apex holders to hold the Phillips bits. Another thing I learned in all my years as an aircraft mechanic is to use valve lap compound in the head of Phillips screws that are worn a bit to get extra grip. It works great. I hope you have a blessed day. Keep those tractors rolling.
I've used the full size one and it should be in the toolbox of every mechanic or shop. Even works great for nuts and bolts, not just screws. Don't remember the name but it works great.
You know Scott. I gotta say that I really admire the relationship you have with your brother. If my brother and I took off on a project like that, in the first five minutes one of us would be going upstate 10 to life. Keep it up and be safe fellas....love,peace, and diesel grease!!! E = MC2= EVERYTHING MUST CONCLUDE SQUARED= MC=E2=solidarity2.
It's good to see you guys working on a truck build again. I found your channel during the IH build and have been watching since. Learned a lot about things I have never been exposed to.
check your rear valve cover, they dont like chains, get a 379 radiator support for the engine, one mount per side of the engine with a flat plate over the valve cover with the taper bushings on each front side, total pain, hated petes when you have to remove them, also check your transmission shift top cover, the set back may force you to get a new top. there are three different tops, rear, middle, and front.
My mum used our 2 post ramp and some old plastic and tin fencing panels to make a spray booth for a small car, with a diesel heater blowing in it worked well!
I used to love the 378 with the set back axle. Other drivers would hit everything because they didn’t remember the set back axle. Great in tight places.
I’m all for electric vehicles for folks in metro areas commuting. But the ability for farmers-or whoever drive semis daily-to swap and repair old stuff is what makes diesel’s relevant still. Edison motors hybrid truck is pretty cool. Also the option to use vegetable oil-yes, it works, better in warm climates, however very labor intensive in gathering fuel-is still an option.
Amazing how many projects you had last winter. Scot’s rig the Big Bud and this truck. Thanks for bringing us along. Keep on farming and I’ll keep on watching.
I’ve done that pulled my 425 b model and ll8sp and put it in where 12.7 Detroit was. Greatest thing I’ve ever done. Only thing I had trouble getting the way I liked it was fuel peddle angle. Had to trim frame rails as the front cover was wider on the cat. Such a good idea.
My dad has a 1990 377 Pete with a b model cat in it. If you guys need a vin number for radiator brackets we would be more than happy to give it to you😊
As you found out, the 3406 is a larger motor than the C12. Pay attention to what your driveline angles will want to be when you want to reposition the rear mounts. Also, this truck is a set-back front axle and you have the oil pan position that's normally used on a set forward axle. You might need to flip the pan to provide clearance to the axle and tie rod....But you've probably already figured that out if it is a problem.
When I switched my B for and E the donor motor came out of an FLD had turn the pan around and get a new sump. I don't envy have to go from a e to b that whole truck is electronic
I worked at Peterbilt motors from 2003 to 2007, I worked in the engine set department during part of that time. Those harnesses were always in the way. We had to twist the engine to work around the lines, also we didn't have the cab or the fuel tanks in the way at that point.
I recommend that you remove frame horns and hood from 379 and move them to the 377. Rough use will cause the hoods to crack vertically up beside inside of headlights on 377.
Why does it sound like poetry, whenever you say "Just got this from Tony Fast at Fast AG" He is the gift that keeps on giving!!! Just remembering the Case Skid loader!
A solid hard five day job working full time to do everything done in just minutes. Glad its you as my day came and now way way gone by. I had armstrong and a couple air tools. No big tools that were powered by a battery or even air. As said, if going to sema and being a trailer queen... might of done different but its a work truck with TWO chrome stacks! More to maintain but driver pride does help as its the new kid on the block. DOT seems to avoid stopping rigs that are nice looking, even with broken frames and fifth wheels falling off. I have drove old mack trucks (yes break your back comes to mind) that would be there every day working their guts out, underpowered and blowing smoke but made good money every day. You could start it in the coldest days and still have some heat in the cab around most of the airholes in the frame and body throwing dirt in your face. If put on the highway, might of made it a half mile before going to the hoose gow for a good year! Nice work gentlemen. Hard to make it entertaining when its a no fun job.
One trick I saw with Phillips, is to take a really fine grinding disk or file and cut across 2 dimples all the way to the outer edge. Then use a large as possible flat blade to get it out. It won't strip 'as' easily.
Nice, liking the mirrors out on the front like that. I am a big fan of true wing mirrors, you get a great field of view with minimal head movement. My old '61 Land Rover had them.
We have a 99 377 that we’ve had since 350k miles. Now has well over 1m. M11 Cummins and super 10 3.77 gears. Recently did a major and a bunch of other odds and ends. Ready to roll again.
I like to use an electric soldering iron pressed against the head of a stuck fastener for a minute or two to apply heat to the fastener and allow it to rotate, but I've only used it on small fasteners. It just puts heat where you need it and isn't as good as those induction heaters, but everyone usually has a soldering iron.
When I worked in a truck dealership and we would repower like you are, we would remove trans and just motor mounts installed new new location so we wouldn't have to work around the trans. Gave us more clearance and visibility at rear of the engine to get frame mounts where we wanted them. I enjoy watching your videos.
Thanks for another great video Welkers!!! It was interesting and informative and entertaining for sure. First of all your new truck is a very nice looking truck !!!!!! Not sure if it will help you but when I have pulled an engine and transmission. I have used a come-a-long to the rear on the transmission and a chain on the front. As you are lifting them out you can raise or lower the transmission.
I'm old enough that I worked on those, a problem I just remembered was the oil cooler leaking. You might want to put a reman. in it. Those were common problems back in the day.
Love the yellow paint job on the engine, good luck with the truck it looks really good. The previous owner will be wanting it back. It is great to be handy on the tools.
That will make a nice rig! Those 379s are getting so high it’s hard to justify for a farm truck. I have a 01 379 I bought 10 yrs. Ago. Should have bought 3 !!!
We have the same setup for frozen screws, been using it for years on aircraft so it was a good idea no doubt, though we use a rivet gun not a air hammer, rivet gun hits harder and slower but either will work
Good Idea using the air hammer. So my hack for you is leaf blower to rid your shop of dust. I use one, it works great. All three of you with three leaf blowers in unison as a team can really clean that shop fast.
Scottie, you might want to think about wearing a respirator when spraying paint so it doesn’t coat your nasal cavity and your lungs! But I know this the last time for spray painting!
@@bobbob-fg5wy Wagner won't pay the bills it's a farm first then fun projects second. But we do want to get that Wagner done just like a lot of other projects we have.

Might be worth rebuilding the engine for a possible upgrade to any projects you might have in the futre bet one of those big buds or stigers

C12 worth fixing maybe. They went up to 450hp
