    Nice fly Matt! Thank you for the tip on surveying what is in the creek. I happen to be the world's worst fisherman, but I'm also the world's best fishing lure. I'm that guy who gets skunked on a regular basis, but the guy right next to me, has his best day ever.. This may improve my odds.. Haha!

    Good morning Matt. ☕️time watching you tie a fly. Nice pattern, few materials and a relatively easy tie. Any white Antron I’ve seen around here has been on spools, didn’t know it came otherwise. Neat trick with the bug net. I always have one but seldom wear it. We use a 20 gauge for the mosquitos up here. Just kidding Matt don’t want to scare you more than I already have. Lol. Good tie this morning. Take care Matt.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 года назад

      Ha! The mosquitos in South Carolina were big enough to shoot with a 20 gauge. :-) I've got Antron and Z-lon in both bags and cards (probably from Hareline or Metz) but this spooled stuff is pretty convenient. I think this was generic Flyshack stuff as there is no label on the spool.

    Neat bug. Easy and effective I’ll bet. Years ago we used an old window screen and insulated waders to seine hellgrammites out of the Payette river to catch whitefish (which school up in the winter). We used the same technique that you showed. Occasionally we would get some black stone flies or even a sculpin, but would throw them back as they were not effective for whitefish. Wonderful memories 50 years ago.

    Hi Matt, Great video and fly. We don't use many white flies over here (stillwater rainbow trout lures excluded) but this one will get a swim 😉 caenis dry (anglers curse) or a maggot style nymph are the only white flies I use, a white woolly bugger is a good river streamer though. You get scoop nets for kick sampling now over here and they are good, they are standard trout scoop nets with a fine mesh panel. It's amazing seeing the nymphs that we are trying to imitate and how small they actually are compared to our artificials, all fly tyers should kick sample as it defo opens your eyes and gives you a new perspective.

    Very nice pattern. A good color selection may be PMD colors for an effective late spring/early summer pattern for Eastern streams like the Gunpowder or S.B. Raritan.
    Also, to control spreading of the Antron while wrapping would be to follow the thread up to the tie-in point.
    Always enjoy these videos.

    Cool fly there Matt. Thanks! I didn't know they had single strand untwisted Antron until you showed that spool! Just yesterday I struggled with getting straight individual fibers from cards of multi strand, twisted sparkle yarn. After trying everything, just when I thought I had some usable fibers, it would just twist or clump together again. Frustrating. I wonder if hot water or stretching would help?

      I imagine playing around with it in warm water and just pulling it through your fingers might help, but then again, that's a lot of work! Hareline has it in the spools and it's pretty convenient. I just checked and they actually have lots of colors. I only use the white and cream, and even that I don't use that often. But it's pretty good stuff: www.jsflyfishing.com/hareline-antron-yarn

      Thanks Greg! I like the Hareline Touch Dub wax in the large tubes. It's usually about $6 but a tube lasts me a couple of years. :-)

    Hi Matt & thanks for all your videos, I find them the easiest to follow. Question I see you do not use a rotary vise , any reason? Looking at a couple of Regal vises , just not sure on rotary or not ? Thanks

      Thanks John! I use the Regal Revolution as my main vise. And my second one is a Peak Rotary so I do use a rotary. But I primarily use the rotating function to look at the other side of the fly, or spin it around for trimming materials, etc. But if I was tying a bunch of flies that using the rotary would make it quicker, I'll definitely use it. But I don't very often when I'm making a video because I have a camera about four inches in front of the fly, and a backdrop right behind. Using the rotary like this, and trying to move around the bobbin cradle... it's a bit too cumbersome. As for the Regal vises... I love them! And if you're considering the Revolution, that thing is a champ. After using this for the last few years, I really don't want to go back to anything else.

      Thanks Pat! And oh man, where do I find all my books is a big question. I guess the first search is just Amazon. There are plenty of current books available there. Then what I like doing with certain books, is looking at the index and at all the books that author cited. Then if it sounds like a cool old book, I'll look for it on Ebay or maybe as a used book on Amazon. I've found a lot of treasures that way. But basically, any internet search will be a good place to start. Good luck my friend!

    I like this fly. Simple and cool looking. My question refers to the mosquito netting use in still water. I would like to try this but here in MS. We don't have rocky streams we have muddy rivers and creeks. I love fishing the lakes and ponds in this state. Do you know a good way to collect samples from warm water lakes and streams?

      Oh, that's a tough one Richard. Do you fish these lakes and ponds out of a boat? I imagine you could fasten together some kind of weighted net and drag it along the bottom or through the grassy weeds along the banks. I'm not sure how well that would work though. But it might be interesting to try. I'm going to think some more about this and if I can figure out a better way, I'll mention it in a future video. Thanks for the question!

    Interesting. Never thought about preserving a live nymph like that. I occasionally just noodle with my hand what's down there and take a peek, but never thought about filtering like that.

      I do that too Ryan, but it's not that fun to reach your arm into the water up to your elbow... in January. :-)
